Keep smiling buddy that you got the truck you got I just retired it's going to be a year ago drove for 45 years to pass 67 years was the most horrible in my life driving the newer trucks nowadays got more sensors bells and whistles will drive you crazy and you go to the shop nobody can figure out what it is it's absolutely ridiculous keep that cab over as long as you can it's saving you a lot of aggravation Keep it Between the Lines buddy piece
And saving a lot of money. And no DEF!
@davidturk6170
Don't forget, it's ELD exempt also.
Hi Steve, at least get a pan of cleaner or a ultrasound washer and a clean piece of cardboard. You need a proper bench heavy enough for a vice.Wheres the wrench you hired ?
Orwell has been kinda needing to be pampered lately. He's a great truck. 😊
We normally keep a spare diaphragm in truck you never know when they gonna rip..🤣
Another good resource for you would be Adept Ape... He has a TH-cam channel, and is (or was, until recently) a CAT mechanic. He's based somewhere in Idaho.
Adept Ape is good, but remember, this is before his time, I grew up on these.
Get a radiator psi pump and adapt it to a number four line. Take the tube off the FRC and pump up the FRC and check for leaks. Naturally if the diaphragm is blown, will not pump up. Could have a small leak on the fitting, gasket or internal leak on the valve, it will slowly leak down.
You wasted money by buying the aluminum housing. If I was going to replace that part, I would have gotten the later design with no holes and the outer cover that uses an o-ring. On the outer cover you see a screw and nut (big Nut). That was used on CARB engines. Since you don't run in California, I take them out and throw them away. It can cause the valve to stick. You stuck it back in and it is an adjustment.
The valve that you did not remove has an internal oring that can leak. Parts show a 7J0204, which is a bad seal. Cat replaced it with a 3E6760. So Cat has not updated the books or SIS. On your 7FB engine this is true on a lot of orings. They have been updated but when you buy parts from Cat. The parts guy and new tech's aren't aware of this and you purchase
You don't have to take the snap ring off. Just remove the brown seal and install a new one. You only have to remove it, if your replacing the stem valve.
Hope you got all the paper out, I have never used paper to put the stem valve in.
The aluminum housing that the diaphragm slides over contacts the spring retainer. It cause a sharp edge on it. If you don't remove it your diaphragm can touch it and tear the new diaphragm.
Also in your governor housing is a filter, 6N6680 and 2D6392 seal. I like to replace it as it is plastic.
Your mounting seals for your FRC, has to be serial number specific. Few changes over the years.
Steve like all you videos keep them coming
Hope this makes Orwell reliable for sometime! Glad he made the trip! Even with the trouble
Like how you said that even it being broke it still drove all the way to Maine and back 1300 miles try that with a new truck it'll derate so much you won't be able to break 25 or even at all lol trucks pre emission are way more reliable even if they are broke
Sorry Steve good luck buddy
Great video Steve really enjoy watching you work on Orwell's fuel control diaphragm. Looking forward to your next video stay safe Steve.
You get it done just like me on your truck a plus brother hard working men
Thanks for sharing! Two suggestions from a backyard mechanic. First, I would have cleaned (sprayed with brake cleaner) the outside of the parts you removed before disassembling. Two, I would have blown out the initial oil line you removed (with cleaner). But that’s me.
Anxious to see the working results!
Add some paper towels to keep hands and parts clean, and gloves , lay down some pig Mats, lay new parts in order and lay the old parts out so you can check that everything is there
The first hardline he removed was an air line, not an oil line, it is the line for the boost pressure to open up the diaphragm.
Love the fact that you have so much going on with your channel. Always great to watch.
Jayus Steve it's very entertaining and edu mactional watching you service and repair your beautiful Peterbilt and 3906B, great content , Fair play to you digging in, I'm from the same era , do it yourself don't pay someone else, watch and learn and do your best.
Well at least you were able to deduce the problem and get it fixed. Sounds like CAT parts counter is as good as Oriellys parts counter!
Steve I love the way you explain everything. Love you channel.
Steve, you had a front strobe light out.
Glad it was an easy fix Steve
It's amazing how a little part can cause a issue. Stay safe
My OCD kicking in. Love to see back rims painted. Lol. Love the videos
He has aluminum wheels for it
Good job diagnosing this behind the wheel and on the road. I was hoping to see a victory ride at the end but I'm like you with new rubber when I work on a cylinder assembly.
thank you for detail video
your a trooper for sure.i used to drive them cabovers my first one was a transtar2 79 model that thing was powerful but heater sucked in the winter feet froze.always had blanket by feet then i got a 1980 352 pete that had a better heater and power steering and air ride god that was a treat from heaven 400 cummings 13 speed loved that truck then it got retired and i got the 362 like orwell my company ordered 11 of them ill never forget it.they where kinda cool but we all wherent sure they where plain jane white colored ones brown vinyl interior.gott remember the old ones had real leather .ugg none of us where on board and they had 10 speeds we where used to 13s and 18s.times change for sure
I hope by now you bought a vise
Whoever priced that shirt added too many zeros...
My company used Redcap shirts as part of our PPE and uniform. The ones we got were flash/flame retardant treated and wore like iron. I bought 5 for myself for $60 but that was 20 years ago. They were black with fine silver pinstripes and looked really nice for a uniform.
Just ordered the new shop shirt and Godfather t-shirt, love both of those designs, hope you keep them around
Hey Steve how are you doing today my friend I love watching your TH-cam videos they are very educational videos and keep up the good I'm very happy that you are working on the thurck and I love old school trucks
Got a B model in my 359, this channels been a big help 💯🤙
Glad to hear. Keep that old iron rollin.
Lots of people put their AFRC on an air switch so you can override it. Would’ve been handy in this situation. I completely deleted mine on my A block.
Why would you want an override for that?
@@danielseelye6005 full fuel at all times regardless of boost. Little more power off the line but the trade off is more smoke. In this case, Steve could’ve flipped a switch and defeated the AFRC allowing him to finish his trip under full power.
If you had a 425 B model you kept a diaphragm in the glove compartment
I always make sure i have all the gasket's and seal's before i tear something down. I figured Matt and Wife already had the Suburban already. Hope u got Orwell running and i bet u was happy pulling in the shop.
Hey Steve i seen on Spencer lawn cares channel. Magnet light bar blew off and went thru the back window on his new truck.
Good evening Steve glad ok Orwell's better
ouch them rear tired (prolly been replaced by now) look a little bald... or are they like that? glad to see you made it home safe :)
The screw is the adjustment for the afc to control fuel delivery at low boost,to actually increase fuel to the engine you have to go a little further and adjust the rack. I had one of those b models the afc is a common problem in a pinch you can turn that screw all the way and get the full engine power back but it will overfuel the engine at low rpm.
Some of us do know Cat engines ,and some of us have been modifying them to make big power so the EPA can chase us.
And some just want to keep them running.
What a complex little device. It kept you on your toes all the way through.
Good to see it wasn't thousands more. Also Orwell sounds great in Lonestar's video when you met up with him at that truck stop.
Time lines all over the olace
Hey, Steve on that air fuel ratio valve on the end of valve that nut and screw if you adjust that screw in to where about 2 threads are showing it will take fuel faster and will perform better on take off...
You weren't loosing/leaking boost. You weren't feeding enough fuel to make power to spin the turbo to create boost.
Had my truck slip the throttle arm on the governor and it suddenly wouldn't pull a hill(in PA also). It would run okay on flat ground. Once I got home I realized the arm slipped just a bit(not moving the rack to full fuel). Once I moved it back it made boost and ran fine again.
If it was me, I would’ve bought two diaphragms and associated gaskets or seals.
You need a vise like diesel creek lmao.
Get one of these: Fireball Hardtail made by Fireball Tool. Look that bad boy up!
Diesel Creek is in my area. He has a good channel as well.
Find you a vise and mount it to a steele post then weld it to a truck wheel or rear brake drum.
Steve your frame rate on your camera is out of sync with your lights and it's causing black banding that is very annoying and distracting!
Mark Galicic on his channel had the same problem with his new GoPro and had to adjust the frame rate to correct the banding!
Also the fuel and tourqe screws are below that valve behind a little plate...👍
Arrrgh going to send you a case of break cleaner to clean small parts
I'll take it. That crap is expensive.
Love your channel, But you have to get a different Microphone. It dosent sound good!!
You should have washed the part in the beginning with some brake cleaner so you don’t have to hold onto a slippery part.
Handling it especially with your dirty hands might get some of that oily dirt into the bore and you want to keep that extremely clean and free from any foreign debris so it seals properly or you will have a premature failure.
It also helps to hold onto it when it is clean and not an oily mess.
Keep those wheels turning!
My dad never cleaned parts before removing them on our machinery, drove me crazy lol
Audio don’t sound too healthy
Hi FSC
To to easy and tempting to turn it up a hair lol but if it's not broken don't fix it meaning the 450 to 500 horse lol
i was running that 79 transtar2 i was hauling malt o meal cereal it was 3am coming through Iowa and all of sudden i was fully loaded and it just dyed then it caught and dyed i coasted off onto a rural road surrounded by 2 cornfields i got surrounded by coyotes that night jacking my cab up had cab up all way up and they wanted to eat me.i slept that night facing ground over steering wheel no cell phones then i had to wait for a farmer to come down road and wave them down that was 7 hours later.it ended up being fuel pump dyed after 600 thousand miles perfevtly good motor i jacked cab up cause i thought maybe a fuel line broke or something it was all a waste of time looking back i needed a mechanic lol.farmer very nice guy hauled me to truck stop called company transtar2 was towed
Big trouble? Timmy is teaching him how to do it lol
Hope Orwell is getting some TLC
Since that truck over 25 years old you might as well remove the governor as it restricts. Any vehicle over 25 years is exempt from emissions & such. I could be wrong but herd many truckers remove them on old trucks. -Cheers!
Owner operator doing well steve keeping Orwell on the road best regards mate 2..5..24 uk good morning steve
Hey Steve, Just a thought, when video stuff like this it's a good reference if you need to check how it goes back together or any other reason. You can create your own reference library.
imo i think giving a once over on every possible failure point would be a good idea just incase another part fails after all Orwell is about 40 years old and parts will eventually give out
I have a bunch of digital cat manuals and I believe my 3406b manual was updated in 2006 or 2011 but I can't remember.
There is not that many cabover engines (COE) unless you go to Europe. I like the old school COE Semi’s; however, I couldn’t drive one because they are all manual transmission also known as a standard shift or stick shift. I have driven nothing but, an automatic transmission since my dad owned a 1979 Chevrolet Malibu and a 1974 Ford Maverick back when Maverick’s were a car long before the new school Ford Maverick pickup truck 🛻. 🙂
Big boost coming soon to a Cat near you. 👍
Yes sir that's were ya adjust for more power lol it would be tempting tho
Part, part, and parts 😊
Orwell is certainly acting up!
I was just thinkin. You buy the parts but you save a crap ton of money by swing the work yourself. Do you think that one loose part is a float maybe
ETC llc has a TH-cam video on a air/fuel diaphragm replacement in a 3406B. He includes the kit part number. $15 kit.
Ahhh I maight buy me one of those fancy work shirts....
Must. Make. Trip. Longer. When. Your. Not. Sure. Good. Luck❤❤❤
that's the way i learned do it yourself never had the money to pay someone else.
I do hope your next video is sometime in the future, but by that time it will also be in the past.
What's wrong with the sound
Does the fuel gauge work on the truck
I want to hang out with steve. Never been to winsconsin
Now we gotta see if orwell still rolls coal.
You were given the wrong housing for the update. The housing they gave you is the same, the part you are supposed to get it 4p-7274 which uses 5p-8210 to seal. The housing you have is prone to warping. This is the housing the that the air fitting threads into.
Air/fuel control diaphragm. I’m going to check that on my Cummins N14.
Doesn't have one.
@@jimhrstka5616 good to know
I was thinking it was your AFC may have been related to the aftercooler
I wouldn't pay that price for a stupid shirt
💪🔥
Wish the work shirt came in 4xl 5xl, but understand probably harder to get. Probably pick up a godfather shirt, cool design. Orwell will never die, just keep being rebuilt and repaired.
Keep watching. I need to verify if they can get them bigger. If so, I'll get them done.
@@fsctrucking Ordered a godfather 4xl for now. I'll shoehorn my way into it if needed, too cool a shirt not to. 😎
I just verified the sizes available from Red Kap. I can get up to 6XL in the Work Shirt. I updated the website. You can pre-order your 5XL now. I just shipped A 4XL "Godfather" out just now. I guess that was you. Enjoy.
@@fsctrucking Thanks, just put an order in for a Red Kap as well.
Woah. Steve, you deadheaded 1300 miles to fix this?
Nobody had the part where you were at?
You got to find out what it’s like to drive a 290 Cummins in the hills, now back to big power
Maybe it’s time to retire Orwell get a Cabover Mack F model from the 1970s Purebread Maxidyne motor Maxitorque triple counter shaft transmission & Camelback suspension Dynatard engine brake
I've got cat books that u need
Get those dash lights fixed?
Those sausage fingers are pretty nimble my man. Good job, definitely not a job I’d try
Trying to order Workshirt XL $60 +8 shipping.. Message says paypal having payment issue. Next, credit card attempt says same thing. Pls fix and let me know.
Where is your mechanic? Maybe not there yet?
Instead of paper, i use plastic bag material
That dumb little part will absolutely make your engine a dog!
Sand down the drive tire rims on that Peterbilt and paint them please ! That’s such an awesome truck and it deserves it plus it won’t drive name crazy anymore . 😎
He has aluminum wheels for it.
All you had to do is cut nail head off plunger in afrc i deleted mine no more problems
Didn't realize this happened so long ago
Yeah, end of February!
these videos are filmed way way long ago?
Before MATS and the boat escort with Finis Gentry.
I hate snap rings
Its Lancer from deltarune
O come on give it more juice
I hope they have what you need.
Why does it say operated by and not leased to on your doors
Because that is how it is required by the DOT. We were ticketed years ago for "leased to" wording. Some Nik Nak garbage revenue ticket DOT stickler with no life.
Aneroid valve or “ puff limiter”
don’t trust a diaphragm
He had 2 people tell him what was wrong what is with this guy I could have fixed it in the rest area
