As many of you have requested, here is our original composition of J.R.R. Tolkien's "Song of Durin" A Cappella Complete Edition! Sorry it took a while, but that is the nature of art.
My brother composed and arranged the song. My family and I sang it. One of my brothers drew the beginning cover art.
We hope you enjoy it!

The Dwarves never lost Faith in Durin.
It is incredible how fleshed out Dwarf religion is in Tolkien’s work, out of the main peoples the dwarves were the only who weren’t Eru’s creation which makes them stand out a lot

@@mysteriousdude6296 The Dwarves were created by Aulë, the smith of the Valar after he got impatient from waiting for the elves to awaken, although Eru Illuvatar didn't allow it he fell pity for Aulë's creation and allowed them to live, but since the elves were supposed to be the first Aulë placed the dwarves asleep under the rocks of middle earth, and the first to awake was Durin

I love that in spite of centuries of tragedy, the dwarves still see an eternal hope in the world. It gives the same feeling as “the sun also rises”
It's an interesting juxtaposition with the general attitude of the elves.
Both elves and dwarves are tied to the world in a much deeper sense than the race of man. Dwarves believe in reincarnation and that a hall is set aside for them in the Halls of Mandos. Elves also reincarnate and for a time stay in the Halls of Mandos.
Man is unique in that his time attached to Arda is limited and eventually all pass beyond somewhere else.
However the elves lost faith in the world over the ages as time passed and the magic of the early ages faded. Dwarves mostly lost faith in everyone else but never really lost their care for the world and creating great works in it. They also believe that all will be restored to glory in the final days. The elven stance is best summed up by Tolkien's words through Galadriel that “. . . together through ages of the world we have fought the long defeat.” Elves see no winning and restoration at the end, the dwarves do.
If I *had* to pick a favorite line, it'd probably be:

It superbly conveys the sheer antiquity of the near-mystical events the song is about.
It also is a good representation of Tolkiens relationship with the fantasy chanra
"no stain jet on the moon was seen" is also great. The idea that the moon used to be unblemished and pure but over the centuries greyed and diminished is magical. It captures the idea of a pure and innocent world that has not jet been exposed to pain and suffering.

I made one a bit customized.

But the world will rise from mountains scarred,
New songs be sung, for Arda unmarred.
I took the first stanza and immediatly followed with the one marking the changing world, for I see Tolkien's works as the evolution of the new to the old, awaiting for a renewal.

Gimli son of Gloin sung this for the Fellowship while they were travelling in Moria. I cried at this part. It was so hearbreaking.

I would love to have seen Gondolin in its original glory, through the eyes of Tolkien's imagination. He described things so perfectly, whether those things were of pure beauty, or depressing ugliness. If he could describe these things so well, just think of what he must have _seen_ in his imagination...

Now I understand what Tolkien meant when he described the singing of the dwarves!
It’s a beauty in its own right.
I’ve always sympathized with Tolkien’s Dwarves...they’re beautiful craftsmen, artisans, explorers, and wonderful musicians and poets. They wander and settle for a time, a diaspora that longs to return their sacred homes.
Tolkien’s Dwarves are a tragic people...worthy of the same deep love they have difficulty showing.
I can't prove it but I am rather convinced that Tolkien himself would have more than approved of this.
from what I've read of his letters, Tolkien appreciated almost any well done work of art, this certainly qualifies
its his son that doesn't like people touching tolkiens work I believe

I can't remember where but i do remember there was a letter where he express a small conceit to a friend hoping that maybe people would take some of his work and make their own works inspired by it.
He certainly appreciated music greatly so it's probably no surprise that the best quality stuff inspired by Tolkein has always been music

Tolkien provided the core of almost all modern ideas of western fantasy. We have a lot to thank him for even if he would not be in favor of everything his work inspired.
Lotr remains the pure unblemished paragon of western fantasy ideals through the ages. I whole heartedly believe it will be the mythology of our generation.
Imagine being Durin when he woke up, all alone in the world, the last thing you remember (maybe) is Illuvatar putting you in the world. The first time you see your own face, you see a crown of stars on your head and you know, you don't believe. You know that you will, must be and are The King of your people. You must feel so much responsibility and you are alone to carry it.

The crown of stars is also symbolic that at the moment when the first stars were set in to the sky after the cataclysm devised by Morgoth ruined the twin lamps that illuminated the world. It was at the moment of the first stars before the sun and the moon were ever created, Dwarves and Elves were first awoken in the world.
Must have been something similar to what Adam felt.
I've listened to this song so many times, and still the part "In Moria, in Khazad-Dum" sends shivers down my spine every single time!

There is a well considered theory that Thorin, had he lived may have been seen (rightly so) as Durin VII, or Durin the Last. If so the War of the Ring may have gone much better for the Free Peoples.

@@Luisyz_ an equally great king in my opinion. Dain defended the Lonely Mountain during the War of the Ring and showed that even at an old age he was an exceptional warrior and leader. I love his quotes in the BFME2 game such as:

Gets me every time, too. It's like listening to those myths about Great Kings and Kingdoms. Tolkien worked 50 years to create a whole mythological landscape. I know it's stupid to think this, but I sometimes wonder what if he really just translated some ancient myths from some obscure texts, and he's merely passing this discovery on to us, in the form of literature?... What if this isn't fiction at all, but long-forgotten history?...

What amazes me most is how deep that one guy can go :O

The final light of the crown of stars will shine across the pool of Mirrormere...and Durin the Last will arise.
The painful part is that he will be "the Last"...Durin's Folk will rise to their greatest height...a glorious flame that is doomed to a short life. From this on, Durin's Folk will retreat into the mighty halls of Khazad-dum and with the passing of time fade into memory and in time be forgotten. Only in the ending of the world will they come forth one final time...and their ultimate fate will be to build the world that is forged anew. Then they shall die.

Well that’s who Tolkien based them on.
Tolkien also based the clearing of Fangorn on the time of Industrialisation and the aftermath he himself experienced. There are also many metaphors to WW1 in his books. For me there is no doubt there is a connection between the dwarves and the jews.
All of us find tragedy. It seems as though history perhaps seems to extends before our time and include conflicts from before our understanding.

I don't know why, but everytime I listen this song, I have chills and feel sadness and nostalgia, like if I had lost something important to me. Even knowing that dwarves and their kingdoms only exist in my heart.

It's a very small thing but the fact that "power" is given one syllable instead of two is characteristic of the 19th-century hymns that Tolkien would've grown up on, and I think that would've pleased him too.
The line "who now beyond - the western seas have passed away" is another example of this.

I often sing “Misty Mountains” to my toddler when he’s in bed. 13/13 Dwarves would recommend.
The lyrics in this song are so powerful. Even though you know it's a story but when you hear it you can imagine the whole world at that point of time. And when the lyrics change towards the future

That is when i get chills somehow imagining the giant underground halls dark and dead without any living being and forgotten in time.
This is a spot on description of what I imagine too. It also gets me thinking about our world in a bigger picture and timescale. For example, about how old the mountains we see really are, and the fact that they have seen it all.

This stuff is exactly why I didn't get into the LotR books when I first tried to read it when I was 14, and now three years later on a second go I am loving it. Tolkien made a fantastical world seeped in magic and lore. A truly ancient world where every hill, forest and valley has a story and beings of legend walk the earth. The books have a sense of mystic wonder as it gives the impression that magic is fading, and what remains are shadows of their former power, but the legends and histories that are told in the books give glimpses as to the world when the elves were at their strongest, men were young and the Dwarves lived in their ancient dwellings in all their glory and wonder. Songs like this are why I'm really getting into the world and history of LotR when I might have instead just read and forgotten it.
and you'll find if you reread them, in a few years, they'll have grown. Always new stuff to find. Ive been reading and slowly rereading them for 50+ years, and never weary of them.

@@Himhimhimhimhimhimhim The books of The Lord of the Rings are: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King (although it is possible to find them in a single volume as they were meant). Also to read (probably before LOTR) is the Hobbit. The Silmarillion is also worth a read, though not necessary. There are others, but these are the big 5. You can find them at most bookstores and libraries and I'm sure you could easily order them online. I definitely reccomend.
He was probably the greatest fantasy writer ever but he was a bit grim.
Just the juxtaposition given by the verses "The world was young, the mountains green" and then "The world is grey, the mountains old", the way it alternates the 'type' of adjectives...I have no words to describe how much I love it, and it's such a minute thing. Thanks for making this amazing cover!
You've missed the middle section: "The world was fair, the mountains tall", it lies at the centre of the symmetry portrayed by the other two, indicating an apex of their civilization. :) It avoids breaking the symmetry by not using either an age or colour type, but instead making a call to grandeur.

Just got thinking about what an alternative line could be.
My cousin showed me this song a year ago this month the last time I travelled across country to visit him. He recently died in an accident. I never told him how much I enjoyed this song, but now whenever I listen to it I think of him.

Sometimes I like to think that Tolkien is(was) a Maia and that upon his death he returned to middle earth.I just love the idea that middle earth actually exists.I mean Tolkien has such vivid imagination that it makes you question the existence of a parallel world.

This is probably the single-best piece of Tolkienart I've ever come across. I'd love an entire album dedicated to the dwarves and another one to Numenor.

@MinecraftPro15 i think that Tolkien wanted to imply that the Numenorien have achieved a similar level of technology as our civilization at that time. For example with the palantir. It does the same thing as our walkie talkie but they invented it using magic.

As disappointing as the Hobbit films were, I'll never ever forget that first trailer with the "Misty Mountains cold" song and the anticipation for this proud and mournful race of Middle Earth. This song has perfectly recaptured that feeling, imagine if the films had all been able to capture this raw emotion?

I have far more respect for the Dwarves than the Elves. They carve their halls out of the very rock and stone of the Earth. A hardy folk of iron will.
I agree that the dwarves are hardy folk, and should be respected. For whatever reason, I'm really not sure why, I just seem to resonate better with the elves. I respect them, but I like the elves more.
I think the fact that it was one family who sang this gives it an extra edge. Of course the talent is fantastic, but voices of family do work together like nothing else

Man, those lines hit hard despite knowing that this is a fictional universe. The Dwarves are perhaps the most tragic race in Tolkien's world. Long-lived, but not immortal like Elves. Neither the first or second children of Eru Illuvatar (Elves and Men). Were almost destroyed by their creator (the Valar Aule), but saved at the last moment by Eru. Most of their realms were destroyed by Dragons or ancient evils they dug up.
This is absolutely beautiful and a perfect interpretation of J.R.R.'s writing. Keep doing what your doing and thank you for giving a little more life to the this wonderful world.

Clamavi De Profundis I enjoy every piece you put out.
This song really captures the essence of the Dwarves themselves. Full of justified pride in their people, a deep respect for their ancestors, and such beautiful, deep and powerful voices which perfectly fit the greatest craftsmen in middle earth.
There is nothing like listening to this while reading Durin's song.
After hearing Eurielle's version, I thought to myself for years that there couldn't be two versions....
Until I revisited both songs in 2021
I came to a compromise with the idea that, Eurielle's version was sung by an Elf trader who frequented the Dwarven halls as an elf friend to the dwarves, and who have for the longest time heard the Dwarven songs in their tongue and recounted it's melody by mere memory and had his/her own rendition of the song.
While the Clamavi De Profundis version was the actual melody of the song sung by the dwarves themselves.

This is one of the songs I sing to my sons before bed. My middle son likes this one the most because it “Tells a story and is about dwarves ” ❤️😊
Am I the only one who really liked it when they said, "In Khazad-Dum"? I love how they sang it, and for me, it's one of those words/names that you just want to repeat over and over again.
I love it too. The first time I heard it I realized it was the song Gimli sings in Moria because Sam repeats that part and says he likes it.
In Khazalid (the warhammer dwarven language that as far as i can tell really just seems to be an offshoot of the Tolkien dwarven) Khazad-Dum could be roughly translated as 'old dark underground hall' or if you want to keep more of the spirit of what it is 'ancient dead/doomed hall'. With hall meaning more of what you see in the image of this video, than of what we humans normally refer to as 'halls'.
This one always make me cry. Beautiful voices, lyrics, feelings. From beginning to end, melancholy and beauty.

@Rald-Romeo Magallanes all of this was part of Erus plan. Caos and entropy are an essential part of creation. It was melkors influence that created rain as he made temperature disbalance in the atmosphere,
In the silmarillon is said that Eru allowed most of Melkors acts because of that reason, without chaos and only order, the world stagnates

This is wondrously powerful and evocative. It somehow manages to bring their rich heritage, with all of its glories, ancient longing, flaws, and reverence, to life.
Hearing this, as a dungeon master, I may have this play at a dwarven funeral

When listening to this song, I always come back to the lost world of my childhood, when every rock covered a mystery, when forests in the mountains seemed unconquerable and vast, when every smell and sound was sharp and crisp.
The world seemed like a magical place, full of adventures and discoveries waiting to happen. I felt the magic around me, and I was waiting impatiently for adulthood to be able to experience it all on my own.
First the river, which used to be full of trout got straightened and demolished to make the water flow faster and not spill out onto meadows.
Then flood few years later destroyed large part of the little town I spent my every holiday in, then my grandfather died after a year of suffering, before he even reached 68 yo, and I was still so young back then, so I never talked to him as a man. The town rebuilt, but its spirit and all my childhood hideouts, make-believe castles and dungeons in the park and garden were gone. The mountains did not seem so unattainable any more. There were no more derelict sawmills in the forests that smelled of machine oil and wood shavings that used to have that forbidden aura about them.
And I grew older and more mature, world moved on, trying to obliterate as many physical objects my memories were connected with.
Now it's just some mildly familiar sights, but the smell is different, the people I remember fondly are gone...
This song brings it all back. The sadness of realisation that it's not coming back during this life. But also brings back the happiness and love I used to feel.

So much more then that...there is an argument to be made the Durin I was the very first to Awake...long before the Eldar, but it was the intercession of Eru that forced Aule to put them to sleep until Eru's own Eldar and Edain Awoke.

my mind is blown away. Tolkien is a great man who brought the best story's. The songs and texsts alone are so good. I love the lore of the dwarfs as a strong kin bound to eatchouter. this is how the world should be.

To put Tolkien's poetry to music and make it sound this good is a thing I wouldn't have thought possible, until I heard this. Now, this is one of my favourite songs ever. Excellent composers, excellent performers.
I love how this is a story of a better time, and shows that as time progressed, things became more and more sad and grey, almost like the very earth was depressed and void of any true life due to the wars waged, the only bit of color left in the world belonging to that of fire, reminding those who use it to build weapons of a time when it was used to simply make meals for their kin and naught a thing more

Genghis Temüjin Khan Mahal is the Dwarves' name for the Vala called Aulë. He created the Dwarves in Tolkien's "The Silmarillion".

I think dwarven name of Aule was put by Tolkien in one of hes letters.

Wonderful evocation of the tragic sense of lost grace and glory that runs throughout the Silmarillion and underpins The Lord of the Rings! This sent shivers running up and down my spine. I'm sure that Tolkein himself would have loved this.
