This scene made me so sad...I really felt Maddy's sadness but Cassie doesn't care or regret any of her actions. She actually got what she wanted: to feel loved. She was already loved by Maddy and didn't even know it. Insecure people mess other people up.
I disagree. I think Cassie does on some level, regret her actions and feel shame, because she knows they’re wrong. But she’s so deep in her own rationalization and cognitive dissonance that she can’t consciously feel it. Getting validation is all she’s ever known. I think she always felt jealous of Maddy (hence why she pursued Nate and tried to be Maddy in the first place) and really wanted her approval, while also wishing she could have her fire. But she was never like Maddy- she’s too submissive and cowardly. That’s partially why she did such a fucked up thing- she is desperately insecure and ashamed of herself. She needs permission from everyone around her to basically exist and not feel unloveable. What she did was so messed up, but she’s a really interesting character to me.

Yep, agreed. You can tell by her look as maddy is banging on the door. She knows that she did something deplorable, but it’s too much for her to face so she’s denying denying denying. Her only way to cope is to get attention, and she’s so deeply insecure that couldn’t even protect her most important friendship. It’s rationalization to a T.
It’s the morals and principles behind it all. Imagine your BEST FRIEND dating the person YOU WITNESSED put them through hell? But even then if you don’t get it you don’t get it, so really me explaining it serves no purpose. I can only hope you never come to understand it from real life experience cus ol boy life has a way of shutting us up!
