  • Here's a nice although incomplete Frank Mossberg Socket set. Almost 100 years old this set has stood the test of time and still works great.

    Scoutcrafter thanks for making this video. I picked up a whole snapon tool box full of tools from a coworker of mine and it was full of Walden tools. It included 2 sets of sockets like yours made by Walden in leather cases! The cases need to be fixed but these tools or any tool from Massachusetts are wonderful to me since I grew up in Boston. Thanks again.

    That is absolutely beautiful. Great history right there. I love the pass though technology that's 100 years old. Nice display for the video. Pretty cool.

    Using an online inflation calculator, $13.00 in 1920 equates to $168.76 in 2018 dollars. Wow.

    Greetings from the Uk ... just found your channel this weekend,great stuff ....
    That socket set is just excellent.
    Just goes to show that just because we are ‘modern’ we’re not necessarily making better stuff.
    ( now thinking about all those “old rusty tools” i’ve thrown out over the years!) ......

      Hello Ookami! Yes I agree 100 percent! I recently bought a vintage screwdriver set because the distributer of the set was in the next town to me. It must have been nice when we had so many manufacturing facilities right here, before globalization went too far. Thanks very much!!

      Hello Nicolas! They aren't as good as the stuff they make today but they sure were cool looking! Lot's of tools today just don't look "cool"... I remember as a kid going into my Great Grandfathers Barn, everything in there I wanted to touch! I wanted to try it out and play with it... Stuff today just doesn't draw you to it like that! Thanks very much!!!!

    Nice set. I think that universal socket works better than today's universal sockets.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      berzerkzero- I think your right- those universal sockets fit multiple nuts, but not correctly! Universal tools usually always have more short comings then merits. Thanks much for commenting! 😃👍

    My chrome Proto 3/4" ratchet wrench is square pass through with a selector switch. I bought a 3/4" anvil for it. But, now I suspect that the Proto may have come with square drive sockets. You have an elegant tool set. Fine video.

    Cool old set. Was it from the same company as Mossberg firearms. I know I've seen some Winchester tools and such. That set was ahead of it's time in a way with being able to have a long bolt go through the socket. I know they make or made a more modern set that did that but I can't remember the name. I wanted a set of them back when I did sheet metal work. When we hung larger duct work we used the threaded rod to help hang it so it would have been handy.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello Ben! Those old sets were really well made for the time! That swivel U joint is awesome! They had some crazy sizes too! I used to own a Mossberg 500 until Governor Cuomo made it illegal overnight... Thanks very much!!!!!

    27/32" socket may have had applications in the old days, but it would probably fit on plumbing fixtures today, as well. They often seem to do that on plumbing parts to keep the homeowner from doing his own work. That U-joint looks smooth, but it's kinda large and may prevent it's use in some situations. They made tools clunkier back in the day, as working space in an engine compartment was free and open. It might be difficult using that set in one of today's cars.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Steve! It's obvious you know your tools! These older sets are really fun to look at but nothing beats today's technology... I too got a kick out of that U-Joint! looks strong enough to power a small machine! lol Can you imagine working on your car today and yelling over to a friend "Hand me a 27/32"!" =D Thanks very much!!!!!!

      Hi Mike, I bought an old tractor and they had quite a few square nuts and plugs so I figured I could use these. You know your working on old stuff when you encounter square nuts! 😃👍

    Hell, Ive been going to the wrong flea markets - nice stuff. Tell the youngin's not to be laughing at those stamped sockets. Those sockets are made of something they might have never seen, high quality steel and they can really pull the load.

      @ScoutCrafter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello James, it’s funny but when I first saw these sockets I used a regular modern ratchet not knowing about the original style. I doubt these sockets can compare strength wise to modern sockets but they sure are cool! 😃👍. Thanks!

  • @jusb1066
    @jusb1066 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Its a genius idea to mske it 1/2 sq inside drive and 3/4 outside and pass through. Pass through has seen a resuregence lately but no standard has caught on, i guess snap on must have stolen the 1/2,size when they invented the 1/2 3/8 1/4 we see now. Ine the uk we had hexagon drive and thus you had large hex keys to drive the tools, ratchets came way later and used the ratchets that came on car jacks initially

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hello Jusb1066! I know you know tools so you must also find it funny when current manufacturers advertise "New Technology" that was invented many years ago!
      Every new generation are potential customers for rehashed ideas! Thanks! 😃👍

    • @jusb1066
      @jusb1066 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i have only one 'odd' set of tools, a set of britool 5/16 sq drive sockets and a ratchet, a set of BA 0-10 sockets , which i picked up one at a time over several years of boot sales in the uk for about 5 pence each, just for the challenge of finding something so weird

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jusb1066 - 5/16 drive? That's unusual! I'm sure the fractional sizing of USA tooling must be a pain in the butt compared to metric. Didn't you guys have Wentworth or something years back? 😃

    • @jusb1066
      @jusb1066 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes we had whitworth, my bsa bantam was a combination of: whitworth, national fine, national coarse, BA, cycle threads, a couple of BSPT taper pipe threads, and modern part replacements were metric...... i have since gone all metric and sold off my older tools!

    Is the L-handle the original one ? I would have expected it to be square bar as was the T-handle.? Hope you find the missing sockets,maybe the "Alloy Artifacts" fellow could help you there..would be nice if you could clean the box up a bit and make a reproduction lid for it,based on pictures from that old advert you showed..
