All Purpose Home-Brew lubricant...

  • This Grease-Oil mixture was a chain lubricant used on vintage motorcycles. I've used this lube for many years on my Vises, tools and many other high friction surfaces.
    I made this batch a little thicker viscosity for chassis application but can easily be made thinner by adding more oil. A 60/40 or 70/30 mix will increase flow and penetration.

    Most homeowners don't need the variety of lubricants that you have. Could you do a video on top 5 or 10 lubricants home owners should have? This would be extremely helpful for the average handyman homeowner.

    I just read the comments below & like the idea of mixing the Red Lithium Grease and MMO ...What you have done this video is show people how to make different weight oils . Unlike way back before our time (World War II and b4) I don't think there was such a variety of oils or even detergent oil as there is now . So people made thier own concoctions. As for me , if I needed some chain lube , I may just go buy some 40w-60 or some such pre made oil. I am interested in that idea of mixing the Red Lithium Grease and MMO though .

      AmericanCoinHunting Hi Dave! I think anyone from our "era" has a fondness for MMO. 😃 I will try it out and do an update to let you know how it works... I won't make it quite as thick... I'm even going to try Petroleum Jelly and mineral oil for a "non-toxic' lubrication! Thanks!

    I work as a maintenance guy. I carry a small bottle of lock oil with me all the time (made by CRC). It works on 95% of the things I need oil for. It even has some penetrative substances in it, so it helps with loosening rusted bolts etc.
    For rubber i use silicon based grease, for bearings proper bearing grease. Other than that, I haven't had the need for other oils or lubricants. Nevertheless, yours is a nice recipe and I might give it a try. I see that being especially useful in freezing temperatures where grease is too thick and oil still too runny. Thanks for sharing.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kopsu It's funny how we all have our favorite oils and lubes.. I too like CRC products, they are geared more for the professional and not for sale all over.. I know guys who love 3 in 1 oil because the smell "takes them back"! One of my favorites is Marvel Mystery Oil because my Dad always had it on the shelf... I'm going to mix up a batch of Red Lithium Grease and Marvel Mystery Oil next! Thanks much for stopping by! 😃👍

    wow im not the only one who does this? i keep a small jam jar with this, our multi purpose grease in the uk in nowhere near as stiff as yours starts out anyway or as dark. i dont use heat to mix mine, but patience, put about 70/30 in a jar about 3/4 full to allow for adjustment, mix and let set overnight as it absorbs the oil naturally. i use this in some of my ratchets as i find neat grease might make them skip a tooth, and oil of course wouldnt stay in them long. i like mine to 'just' want to flow under its own weight, but no more, not like a thick oil really, like jello that isnt quite set? if that makes sense.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      jusb1066- That is awesome! I have been mixing lubricants for some time too, depending on the application oil might be too light and grease too heavy. You're right about the mix, sometimes if the combination is too thick I thin it down, sometimes it thickens as it gets colder too. The warming of the grease/oil just helps it combine and not separate when cool. One of my favorite batches is that Vaseline and baby oil mix! It works great for wiping down tools and is non toxic! Thanks!!! 😃👍

    Hey Scoutcrafter - love all your terrific tips.
    Have a question - I'm refurbing my uncle's table saw and was goining back and forth as to what lube to use on the pinions and gears etc.
    Do you think your homebrew 50/50 mc chain lube would be good for this? I was thinking this might be easier to maintain that pure grease which would probably get very bunked up with saw dust over time.

    Years ago I worked in a shop we build coilers and we used a really thick grease for the gears. And we had to heat the grease like you did, while it was heating up I moved on to the hydraulic piping and for got about the grease it boiled over and caught the hot plate on fire what a mess. After that I kept a close an eye on it😵

    Informative video. Which of your home brews should we use to lube gears in ratchet wrenches, especially the non- maintenance type like your early Craftsman? Grease in the gear over time turns into hard crud and 3 in 1 machine oil does not cling to the teeth on the gear.

    I’m getting ready to make a batch, but I have a couple questions. What is the purpose of non-detergent vs regular?? Non-detergent oil is actually a little hard to find. As for the grease, what is the theory behind general purpose vs say high pressure? Or is it just based on selecting the least expensive option?

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello John, Great questions! The Non-detergent oil is indeed harder to find! But worth it, here's why. Before 1950 most cars did not have oil filters and used regular non- detergent oil, the oil was just a lubricant and cooler. The dirt in the oil would find it's way to the bottom of the oil pan and sit there for ever! Then in the 50's cars came out with a Oil filter and they started adding detergents to the oil so dirt would be suspended in oil and then the filter would remove it! So for strictly lubrication you don't want detergents suspending dirt! You want non-detergent oil. As for the Grease, The only thing I would change is I would try to get regular Red Grease to mix with the Marvel Mystery Oil, the High temp grease takes longer to melt and blend. Did you see the part 2 to this? all great stuff! Hope you try it! Thanks!!!!!!!!
