Has anyone else ever thought that maybe the people on the other side of the phone are actually unaware that they are scamming people? Like, maybe they truly believe the things they tell people and are as computer-illiterate as the people these companies target. It's entirely possible that they have been tricked into believing this stuff by the 'higher-ups' that they work for and believe they are offering a real service. This would explain why they always seem genuinely confused when you tell them they are scamming people instead of just instantly hanging up. I'm not trying to justify anything. I just think it's interesting how valid the explanation is.
I thought about this, but if they did indeed think that they were helping people: Wouldn't they have to be a technician to be hired? And if they were, don't you think they would know that pinging "protection.com" doesn't tell you if your files are "aligned" or whatever jazz he said? And don't you think that some angry people will call back, and they might catch onto something fast? I know this is an oldish comment, but I just re watched all of the scam videos and I thought you had an interesting point.
Yeah but to be supervisor and still fall under the same knowledge as their employees I am pretty sure they know its a scam. How can you say you are good with computers and get a job to help people with their computers and not realize they are scamming those people and still call yourself tech savy
Vito Purpura Who mentioned supervisors? These people on the phones are literally bottom of the chain. If they're desperate for work and some guy comes to them saying "call people all day, use this script, I'll give you money", they'll probably take it. They don't get a job "helping with computers" they get a job "cold calling with a script". It's their own lack of knowledge that makes them think they have knowledge. Understand?
Thanks for making this video, hope more people share this. I get calls from these guys all the time and I never type in what they ask me to, I never let them login to my computer, instead I just waste their time saying the computers still loading or I pretend to type what they tell me and when they ask "What do I see on on your screen?" I say Google search. When they tell me to type it again and I keep playing dumb saying the same thing. Next time I think I'll just read some articles form Yahoo News too them. My question is how are they able to me in business so long and even have an ad on Google search engine. Wonder if anyone has contacted Google to inform them.
+Rinnegan Sasuke id absolutely advice against this (on a computer that has any use to you). Get a Virtual machine and let them into that sure, but i would not let them in a computer you want to use or that has sensitive data. These guys have been known to (at least in windows) setting a new admin password, steal files and i wouldn't put it past them to put something nasty in there as well. "keep an eye on what they are doing" well you might not be fast enough to react if they do something, and you might not be able to see it either
i just wanted to clarify a bit. if someone only reads the first sentense... Also "its best to do it..." could be interpreted as "...but its still ok to let them do it to another computer."
I can tell you why they have a US address, first it's for trust of people, but second, I work for a payment processing company, we don't accept merchants with tech support companies based in India, they have to be incorporated in USA (at least) and have a business presence there, the support companies based in india, not because they are all scammers, are not well seen as they represent a high risk of chargeback. (customer disputing the charge) They simply, unfortunately don't have a high rate of honnesty, same thing would happen if someone wants to accept payments through a company based in Nigeria.
Are those guys making money if you call them? Phone money? If not, we could simply call them the whole day to waste their time, which prevents them from attacking actual victims. Basically scamming the scammers.
There's a TH-cam channel called "the hoax hotel" where the guy wastes the time of all different scammers all the time. Well worth the watch & loads of vids.
They only make money when one of their victims pays them. So while you waste their time they can't scam someone else. But they change their number every couple of days so it's hard to waste their time.
Mostly the old people who cannot adapt to the computer well at their age...poke fun at the scammers as much you want...not the people scammed...maybe ur grand parents might have fallen for this....just saying
Many people are not as tech savvy as us Nerds and geeks. It's so unfortunate. Was of my most favorite moments ever was when I get this call and of course the person had a foreign accent. I was told that he was a "Representative" of Microsoft and that my computer had showed on "Their" networks as being infected! :-) I asked him in an astonished voice which one? I have many? LOL! He Jibber Jabbered, stumbled all over his words and then I calmly told him that he really messed up when he called me. He asked why and I told him what I did and that he was an idiot and that I do computers for a living and I knew they were all secure. Oh Lord! I feel so sorry for people that fall prey to thieves like this.
I like this guy rather than the others guys who do the same kinda thing... This malwarebytes guy has a real 007 style about him... He kills them at gunpoint, but he's absolutely a gentleman and a professional. It's like he understands that is real people he is dealing with. Who, if they had a choice, would really like to work at a place that scam people?. It's like he know that his real mission isn't to destroy these people manning these phones. Though it is put on YT to show that scam exist. I support that mission sir! go on and do even more great work mate ;)
I strung one of those Indian tech support scammers along for about 10 minutes, then asked him if his mother was proud that he was working for a criminal organization. Any scammer worth his salt would have simply hung up, but that one got mad and started swearing at me. I just laughed at him and let him rage on. Eventually he hung up.
I am curious what most of these scam companies do if they called or got called by someone who has Linux? I assume they would use the same BS ping command in the terminal, since like mac linux has virtually 0 viruses and no registry for any of their fake programs to "scan" and report "problems" with.
Something similar to this happened to me last year when i got my macbook, i didnt know any better. He went through my system to "check if I'm affected" and then "removed the virus", but i told him i didnt want to pay for the protection and he disconnected. Is there any way my mac was infected without me noticing. Would i have noticed if something was wrong by now? I don't pay for any type of antivirus
MalwareBytes Employee: Uh yeah, I'm a security worker for a security company. Scammer: (Oh crap...) Uh... Ok cool.... MalwareBytes Employee: So you do realize this is a scam, right? Scammer: No sir. (Oh crap, he's gonna tell the police) Scammer then hangs up, then... Scammer: GUYS OMG WERE SCREWED!!!! Scammer Employee: Who was it? Scammer: IT WAS A MALWAREBYTES SECURITY WORKER!!!! Scammer Employee: Yup, your right.
Omg this happened to me yesterday ! It gave me the number and sure enough I called it. The guy answered and he had a Indian accent so I just hung up. I remember that I was having problems with my iPhone before so I called the actual Apple support and when you called it was a process. Now on my macbook this popped up and I was scared. After I hung up the dude called me back again. I was affraid but hung up again. I got my computer to work again by myself and I was like never again will I call a random number
I got a call today from Apple tech support claiming my bank accounts were hacked. Yet they wanted me to allow them to remote control my computer. But after I told them I was recording the conversation, the male Indian tech scammer hung up.
I wonder if any expert hacker or technician ever destroyed these scammers computers via a virus filled packet they were encouraged to download, that would be awesome.
Macs DO have a registry, actually! It's just not well known and can only be edited with a 3rd party program... I have it on my hackintosh... (Edit: Oh, and the "Aligning the registry" is complete bullsh*t! Macs do have one, similar to windows, but it 100% doesn't need managed, *unless you are on a hackintosh to get certain features, etc?* which is why Apple don't put regedit- type software on Macs).
Can anybody help me. my younger brother couldn't get his iPod working and phoned up this number thinking it was Apple. the guy took control of his computer and he instantly closed the window. he is on Windows 10. Will the system be alright or do we have to do something to clean it. I'm not too good with computers so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
This happened to me today. I said no to the part where they asked for credit card details. Has he done anything to my computer by logging on and what do I do? I'm scared they will access my details
+Natalie Renda He might have installed a virus on your computer, although this is unlikely. I'd also uninstall the program he used to gain access to your computer, but he probably did not do much else.
If you're interested, I'd love to help you over the phone. My name is John Smith and I am a tech support representative from Apple. For the price of 300$ I am willing to help you. You can pay via PayPal or by visa gift cards.
+Coach Nick hi coach, I'd like you to fix my PC for me but I will be at work most of the day so if you could logon to my PC before I go to work and you can fix it whilst I'm gone it'd be appreciated, as I won't be able to give you my credit card details I will just leave them in a file located on my desktop & I trust that you will only take what is required.
I've never laughed so hard at the amount of crap that "tech" is coming out with. Trouble is, if you don't know about theses things then it would sound reasonable to some people.
You should also throw in an annotation to say you should only ever download Teamviewer from their website, and this use (non-personal) is against their eula. Also it might be funny to throw a mac skin on a linux variant.

+Markus Anton I was thinking of making the scammer think I am using a mac when I am in fact using gentoo, since a lot of the tools are the same, and I can set up my KDE desktop to look like mac if I wish.
Here you see a scammer not knowing what to say and what he does. He does not even know what he is doing. Ping!! That is pinging a website and checking a website for protection. That is not true. I cannot believe it. I would not believe in scammers. Why would you pay $200 or $300 Dollars for something that does not need to be fixed.
this Malwarebytes dude has such an awesome job.
ping apparently has magical qualities.
Who noticed the scammer changed the quantity to 200 to get 200 dollars lol
"1 minute and 70 seconds" ...
If you visit the payment page now, they've actually removed the company information box claiming their from New Jersey.
Registry Speed... Does even the technician use Mac?
They're probably using Windows.
Yes, I thought that too.
They're like, if I can us Windows, I can use Mac.
Is it just me or does the guy who hosts these counter attacks sound like he would be very attractive?
It's just you
That was probably the most polite scammer. Usually they get super pissed when they are exposed
i love malwarebytes for posting these

the reason your Mac is slow is that you don't have protection.
+theunderdog102 lol
+theunderdog102 hire a bouncer, instant hardbody-er hardware upgrade
Love the "Biggest Lock" annotation, spat my coffee out!!
These guys were actually pretty well mannered compared other videos I've seen.
I like how the supervisor was all calm and collected even after he was called out.
oh gosh... pinging = computer performance? Seriously? Gosh...

At least the pay website was using SSL...
***** anyone can put images saying SSL.. looool bet it was just a basic website using .htm
Safari reported a certificate. So it was secure.
***** yes, let's make secure payments to scammers!
"Thank you for this evidence" "Yep, sure thing!" haha
they would tell you anything and sell you anything.
Can you make a video on what to do if you fell for the scam and how to clean it and fix it
3:58 ping protection.com
"there is no protection installed on your computer" wtf hahahaha

SystemHatVersagt I don't think they get many phone calls lol
Pretty shady computer techs
When will MBAM be available for Mac? I'm excited already.
pretty slick there, running a ping test for protection, then saying ping timeout is bad. Using the shady detection tool against the caller.
Haha, the "ms" at the end of the ping output stands for multi sequence!
aw the fact that he calls you sir make me feel sorry for him
these support people seem to all sound the same
Shaibah I'm Indian and I utterly agree with you. The place is huge and mostly filled with scum.
Cosfour Eckzeven Lol yeah, there are a lot of good indians im proud of, but those scammers deserve to die
Untitled Name Thank God. I thought every comment was gonna say Indians were trash which was incredibly offensive.

"It depends on the Operating System Speed." Actually, no. It depends on your internet speed, and the OS speed almost has nothing to do with it.
He says random shit lol
Or on the server's speed
6:39 "ms is for multi-sequence?", "yeah that is for the multi-sequence you see for the uggh internet browsing and computer speed" LOL
You need to tell them that before you can pay, you need to aligned the money in sequence. :)

Malwarebytes team. What have you done to stop such scammers? I have seen many such videos and investigation but they are still operating
Once again, nice talk, polite and even nice ending.
I love how these guys try to pull stuff out of their ass when they are found out. Fucking hilarious. Great video.
Calling them "technician" gives them far too much credit. Even calling them "agents" gives them too much credit. They are just scam artists.
"Mac is a good operating system."
They are using the PING command and telling you that it is slow based on THAT???
Omg this happened to me yesterday ! It gave me the number and sure enough I called it. The guy answered and he had a Indian accent so I just hung up. Again, using TeamViewer's free version for commercial use? They don't now their ID can be banned?
Team Viewer isn't a bad application Its actually used to connect your ios device to you mac
Team viewer is used by actual technicians so it's reliable, it's the people behind the screen

how does the victim make sure that these scammers do not keep control of his computer once hanging up the phone?
Close the teamviewer connection, you can also disable them from moving your mouse or allowing keyboard input from them
Thank you!

How is that possible that those webites are still on, it should be shut down forever since it is prooven as a scam!
did that company disappear or are did they scam under a new name?
Dude you're good at baiting these hacks!
when will they shut down this website?
Packets lost 100% Whoa!

I am suprised he didn't end up deleting any of your personal files like that other scammer did claming to be from "microsoft corporation"
They called today and it sounds like the same guy.

I didn't know there was a city called 'thank you :)'

they did this to me
"thank you :)" is a valid city? Where at?
That was a valid city because it wasnt on a valid website

shell prompt says "JeromeFusion" so am guessing he's running OSX on VMWare, so no.
There you have it, folks. Pinging protection.com will tell you if you have antivirus or not.
hey ... the website is still around... how come??
he wasn't actually a security researcher. at least i don't think (correct me if im wrong!)
