    A company called Intercity bought Istanbul Park in 2012, closed it down and turned it into a carpark. Intercity’s contract lasts until 2023, i think. We could probably see a return of the Turkish GP soon!

    istanbul was both expensive and far away from central area. the original idea was to build the circuid in Antalya, which is a tourism city and would’ve been at a much better location, closer to urban areas. istanbul park is just so far away.

    Used to love watching the cars screaming down the back straight on the pre-guardrail Watkins Glen Grand Prix. Was so disappointed the first year they had that double guardrail right alongside the track which completely blocked the view which had been so great up on that long rise.

    Turkish GP - the track had to pay a yearly hosting fee, each year that hosting fee went up. The locals weren't big f1 fans. Promoters had to put ticket prices up each year so attendance fell down to 36000 despite a maximum capacity of 125,000. The place was like a ghost track with very little atmosphere. Bernie found the images of empty grandstands to be embarrassing and often made digs towards the circuit. A combination of lack of local interest and also higher ticket prices were being charged due to the escalating cost of hosting. Track asked Bernie to stop the yearly increases and Bernie refused so the track was dropped and released from the contract.

    There are SO MANY more GP tracks to look at. Let's start in the north. Anderstorp in Sweden. When was the last race at the Hungaroring in Hungary? How about Zandvoort in Netherlands near the sea? Or, Zolder in Belgium? France race tracks at Magny-Cours and Circuit Paul Ricard (still use, but not for GP 'though teams will test there - southern coast of France anyone?). Portugal has the Algarve circuit near Portimao and Estoril near Lisbon. Quite lovely. Spain truly is filled with motorsport fans and for years made good use of Jarama and Jerez. Good job, but there's still more work to do.(He said cheekily.)
    Good stuff! Thank you!

    I wonder which current tracks you would prefer to take OFF the calendar. I live near Monaco and it is exciting to have the event here, but the racing is not so awesome. (I would however recommend visiting the bi-annual Historic Grand Prix as it is awesome to be able to access the parc fermeé and stand next to Lauda and Hunt's cars).

    You should mention Phillip Island, before the GP circuit was built here in the 50’s (The one that hosts the MotoGP and SBK) there was a road circuit that was the original host of the Australian Grand Prix back in 1928 (Precursor to the Albert Park F1 we have today), it was a crazy track that was run on gravel roads, it often got so dusty that drivers would focus on the tree-line instead of the road ahead in order to see where they were going. The route of the circuit still exists to this day and there are signposts on the island marking the corners.

      none of these are abandoned

  • @ivaneurope
    @ivaneurope 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What makes an race track abandoned? Well IMO for a track or portion of it to be abandoned needs to follow the following criterias:
    - The track is rarely used in the past few years for major racing events (Istanbul Park)
    - The race track is redeveloped, leaving part of the original layout behind (i.e. the Original Hockenheim and Österreichring)
    - The track is not maintained very often, left to decay beyond repair or completly demolished
    Magny-Cours, Estoril, Adelaide, Jerez or even the original Nordschleife may be "forgotten" by F1, but are by no means abandoned. They are still used in many national and international events. Just because it's not used by F1 DOESN'T mean that this track or that track is abandoned - it's forgotten.
    Make difference between FORGOTTEN and ABANDONED

    Where’s the Indianapolis GP? We need that circuit back or a new and improved circuit somewhere in the US. Maybe like Colorado or Something idk. I’d prefer the Indianapolis GP because it’s a legendary track. It has the potential to be a championship deciding circuit. Maybe a few changes here and there to a few turns but other than that it’s perfect for F1.

    My favourite former track is the one in my city: Adelaide.
    Obviously being a street circuit it's still there and is still used for V8 Supercars. I drive on the roads regularly. For years they left the curbs on the corners in place with the colours painted on. They've been removed now. Nothing else has changed though.

    The Triangle was never used for F1 since 1925. The first year of F1 was 1946.
    They raced GRAND PRIX there, but it is impossible for ANY of these old tracks, Brooklands included too, to have raced F1 before 1946 (and Brooklands never did).
    Just worth making sure you hit that one. I know you know you meant GP racing, and assume everyone else will know, but the fact you are young, and mentioning young tracks... and Tilke garbage.... (aka totally unworthy of mentioning as far as I am concerned :P )... says there's a lot of people under 30 here, probably a lot of 20 somethings.... and it might well be they do not know WHEN F1 began precisely, so you should try to be clear.
    Pure suggestion... but felt compelled to mention it.
    Great video.

    Bernie being an extortionate bastard is why Korea, India, and Turkey no longer run Grand Prix at those circuits. In Korea's case, they wanted FOM to pay THEM the fee as the organisers were the tenants. Makes sense if you're like me whose parents are both landlords, not to Bastard Bernard apparently. So Istanbul Park, Greater Noida, and Yeongnam were dropped in 2011-13. (EDIT) Istanbul Park was used for a time in the WSBK Championship in place of Formula 1 during much of the 2010s. But it has seen better days.

    Where is the Adelaide circuit? Was a favourite among all drivers, teams and fans. Many want it back as well. In its era it was on par with Monaco and is still actually being used today. The track now is nearing 30 years old. was used as part of a 24 hour race back imln 2000, which was meant to run until 2006 but was dropped for some unknown reason. The track provided some of the beat racing ever in F1 with many overtaking opportunities most new street circuits just dont provide nowadays. Many street circuits were based off this track but failed to provide decent racing.

    • @T_Eighteen

      Jack Barrett Its technically is an abandoned F1 track. Yes it still in use today, but there has been several tracks mentioned in this series that are still actually in use today but was previously used in F1. Just because ita being used by other categories does not mean its nit abandoned by F1. The Australian GP race was abandoned in Adelaide due to the track not being sufficient to race on due to safety concerns with the faster F1 cars back in the day.

    • @MyUrbanExplorationOnline
      @MyUrbanExplorationOnline 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Although the Australian Supercars use it, but there is an argument that it can be added to this list due to there are two version of this street circuit. The F1 version, and the shorten Touring Car version.

    Montjuich Park, a 1970's parkland circuit long gone as well
    Finally I would say Clermont-Ferrand - the dizzying stone-thrower of a circuit
    Only here to help...

    Another track for a "lost tracks of F1" must be Donington Park considering it brief F1 use (particularly the 1992 Senna master class in the very wet UK day out driving all with a under powered & under class McLaren car). Also of course the ill fated amount by a very misguided business man to regain F1 ripping up parts of the track to badly try to reformat it & in process bring to very very brink of collapse financially. Sad passing of long standing owner recently too.
