    Believe it or not, purchasing barcodes isn’t as difficult as it may sound. The easiest way
    to get yourself up to speed on the barcode landscape is to understand a brief history
    of the conception of barcodes and how purchasing them went from “Buy only” to
    “Buy vs. Rent”.

    Hi Jonathan, excellent video, thank you. I am putting together a product for Amazon and hope to get your advice. I am manufacturing a new toy and designing the box myself in Photoshop. I formed an LLC and I am in the process of setting up a bank account and credit card at the bank near me. Next, I have to get my Bar code. Do you recommend I have it printed right onto the box? It will be easier than having to apply the printed labels. Appreciate your time. Thank you. Matt

    • @barcodestalk3975
      @barcodestalk3975  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Matthew, this one boils down to personal preference. Printing adhesive labels can be rather cost-effective, however very labor-intensive. Having the barcode printed directly on the product is the exact opposite, virtually no labor (on your end) but can get pricey. If you're a new seller and don't mind the work, adhesive labels may be your best option. Before any of this, check with Amazon to make sure you need a barcode label on your product, in some cases, this is not a requirement. Good luck!

    Hi Jonathan,
    (1) Is there any difference between GS1-USA and GS1-India barcodes?. Whether the barcode purchased from any one of the country can be used any whereelse?
    (2) Do you provide certifcate of ownership after purchasing the barcode from BarCodesTalk?.

    • @barcodestalk3975
      @barcodestalk3975  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, great questions! (1) Technically there is a difference between GS1-US and GS1-India, as they each offer different country codes. Is the difference necessary? Not really, country codes are no longer necessary as barcode numbers in both UPC/EAN formats can be accepted worldwide without the need for a country code. (2) Yes, we do provide a GTIN Certificate of Assignment with each purchase. Thank you,

How can I be sure they will scan at the retail stores where they will be sold ? After seeing the video I realize I should’ve bought them from a third party 🙈 will definitely do so as soon as my subscription expires .

      Yes, you should be able to use the image files GS1 provided to print your labels. If they do no provide image files you can find a free online generator to do so. We create each image and guarantee scannability for barcode numbers purchased from BarCodes Talk. If you're printing on your own you will want to test scan before mass printing. Hope this helps!

If we decide to buy your codes, is it still the rule ? Has the rule allowing reusability of any code not changed on the 1st of January, 2019 ? thks (sorry for my bad english)

      Barcodes (GTINs) work globally.
      The UPC (GTIN-12) is for the USA & Canada
      The EAN (GTIN-13) is for the rest of the world
      Note: We include both formats with every barcode purchase.
      The barcode numbers (GTINs) are global ID numbers created by GS1 in the 1970's, and as the decades have gone on they now work world-wide in every country. The barcodes we sell (GTINs, aka: UPCs and EANs) are from GS1-USA, specifically from before 2002 when all UPC/EANs were grandfathered in, under GS1-US's class-action lawsuit settlement. This is how you can legally own a barcode instead of renting it for a very large sum + annual fees.
      If you would like to read the differences in us vs GS1, you can review our FAQ on this topic (HERE)

      Note 2: Choosing a GTIN based on the incorrect premise of having a desired "country code" is not technically beneficial as all POS systems globally use any EAN/UPC equally. Or put another way, any GTIN (whether UPC or EAN) can work in just about any POS system on Earth. This is why the standard was created in the '70s, to bring everyone under one umbrella to make international trade and interchangeability possible.

      I hope that helps, let me know if you have any questions.

    • @malibu828
      @malibu828 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      GTIN non reuse is still the rule. The internet and the circular economy has meant there is the need for this. The structure of the number does in fact represent the different elements as you say, you are correct. Numbers bought from anywhere other than GS1 will reflect the original licensee of that number in Amazons database, not the person who has just bought it.

    Thanks for the video. I had a couple of questions please:
    1- I understood that GTINs are assigned specifically to an entity from GS1. If they are sold to another party, wouldn’t that mean that the original owner’s name would remain attached?
    2- secondly, I think that Amazon are stating that GTINs will only accept GTINs rented from Amazon. Doesn’t that mean that it could be problematic to buy?
    Thanks

    • @barcodestalk3975
      @barcodestalk3975  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1. There are only two ways to legally acquire a GTIN (UPC/EAN barcode number):
      1: You can rent from GS1 for a hefty upfront fee + annual fees, forever.
      Note: If you stop paying the fees they take the codes back and recycle/reissue them.
      2: You can own outright, for life, from a legitimate barcode broker like ourselves. This is due to GS1/UCC's class-action lawsuit & their settlement in 2002. More on this here: (GS1/UCC Settlement)

    • @googleuser3097

      Bar Codes Talk thanks. That’s what I understood from your video but the questions I’m asking are a bit different. They are: 1- as barcodes are associate with a particular organisation, how do they get reassigned to another entity on the GS1 database if they are bought without GS1
      The second question is about Amazon’s advice to only get codes from GS1- does this mean that codes purchased from a broker will not be valid on Amazon or vendors could have problems in future?
      Thanks in advance for answers on these two specific questions

    • @barcodestalk3975
      @barcodestalk3975  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@googleuser3097 Bar code numbers only associate with organizations through GS1's outdated GEPIR system. The numbers we sell are legacy numbers, purchased before GS1's lawsuit, due to this fact GS1 refuses to update any information involving the numbers. However, this will not affect the use of the numbers in retails stores worldwide.
      Yes, the GTIN’s (UPC’s/EAN’s) that we provide will work with their systems, as well as just about every other store on Earth. All retail P.O.S. systems globally use GS1's UPC & EAN formats for retail product identification. This is the known global standard, these standards were created in the 70's by the UCC, now known as GS1.
      All of our GTIN's are from GS1-USA and specifically from before 2002, which is how you can legally own them and use them as you desire. Some stores may have arbitrary "invented" rules and you would need to check with the store first to make sure they follow the standards that GS1 operates on.
      A note on Amazon:
      We, as well as many thousands of Amazon sellers have clarified with Amazon’s seller support that their GTIN requirements have not changed and that sellers (you) are allowed to own your own GTIN's as long as they are legal.
      We believe their recent communications have been to threaten those less-than-honest sellers who try to defraud Amazon’s open (trust-based) system by guessing or stealing other’s GTIN’s on purpose. *Using a company's GTIN without express permission is illegal. This does not apply if a seller is trying to create a listing based on an item that already exists in the market, aka "piggy backing" which was created & promoted by Amazon.
      We provide more information on special barcode circumstances that only Amazon requires or limits within their private ecosystem, here: barcodestalk.freshdesk.com/solution/articles/16000080208-exceptions-to-gtin-usage-on-amazon

      This is the statement on Amazon seller central: We verify the authenticity of product identifiers by checking the GS1 database. EANs/UPCs that do not match the information provided by GS1 will be considered invalid. We recommend obtaining your product identifier directly from GS1 (and not from other third parties selling EAN/UPC licences) to ensure that the appropriate information is reflected in the GS1 database.
      So yes they do have to reflect your company in the database. This is to try and help with counterfeiting. Numbers purchased from anywhere other than GS1 will not do this for you. You may be able to list today but are likely to have issues down the line. Its not illegal, there is no law against it (apart from in Brazil and China). It is Amazon terms of service. I am working daily with Amazon sellers who are experiencing issues with this and trying to change their numbers over, obviously not wanting to lose their reviews etc. Videos like this make me so angry as they do not see the issues they cause their customers down the line.
      The numbers need to be managed centrally by one party so they do not clash, if they are not unique they dont work. Simple. Until we are at the point that blockchain or similar is mainstream in retail GS1 are that system. Given the barcode and the scanning tech is 50 years old already as retailers havent moved on still! I dont think things will change anytime soon. We have been trying to migrate US retailers from a 12 to a 13 digit number since the 'sunset' date over a decade ago.
      You have a choice as a seller to get them from any GS1 office (there are 115 to choose from) who all have a local offering. Equally, GS1 US have recently started offering single numbers perfect for start ups. my.gs1us.org/product/1367/gs1-us-gtin - no renewal fee and registered to you as a business!

      Yes, each unique product will need its own barcode number. For example: If you have one red shirt size small, you will need one barcode number and it can be used on that shirt as many times as you'd like. If you have any different sizes or colors you will need a new barcode for each variance. Hope this helps!

      Barcodes themselves are universal, but there are things that UPC/EAN barcodes are not used for, like Books, or pharmaceuticals. Further, stores may have their own internal requirements that you may need to adhere to, so be sure to review their onboarding agreement first.

    Hello Jonathan,
    So I sell shoes, and each of them comes in a different style, a different name, a different leather, a different color of that leather, and a different size.
    If I buy from you 200 UPCs, you'll give me the first six digits the same and then 200 different ways to finish those first six digits.
    So if, for example, you give me the first six digit code 101010 and then I will choose number 1 for the style of shoes, "ballet flats," then number 17 for the name of the shoes, "LOLA," then 19 for the leather type "Arabic python," and then number 01 for "Red," and then 35 for size 35.
    In this scenario, it will already be 15 digits, and that's too many.
    But then, let's say we get the number of digits right to 12 digits. Do we then upload into your website the information that each of the 200 UPCs I bought from you represents so that any shop in the world scans it and reads that this is a "ballet flat called Lola made in red Arabic python leather in size 35"?
    My main question is how this information gets updated in the GS1 database when not purchased through GS1.
    My second question is if we can only use six digits after the first six digits that don't change, how can we do it for shoes? I understand the max number is 12.

    • @barcodestalk3975
      @barcodestalk3975  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you were to purchase 200 barcode numbers you would receive 200 unique 13 digit EAN's and 12 digit UPC numbers. These would come from the same prefix (first 6 digits the same) and be in numerical order. The 200 numbers would be available for use on 200 different products. You would not need to add any digits.
      We're glad to explain GS1's outdated GEPIR database.
      GEPIR is an acronym: Global-Electronic-Party-Information-Registry. A fancy way of saying: GS1's private database.
      If you visit GS1's GEPIR site and search any legal GTIN (UPC/EAN) number on earth you will see 1 of 3 things:
      1: Up to date, GS1 owned: Any current barcode renter (This applies if you are currently licensing your barcodes annually).
      2: Not up to date, privately owned: A historical database for all owned GTIN's dating from GS1's class-action lawsuit (settled on August 28th of 2002) going all the way back to the early 1970's when barcodes first came about.
      3: No data, GS1 owned: If nothing appears, that is a sign that GS1 has yet to issue that barcode number out and that GS1 owns and controls that specific GTIN number.
      If you search for a GTIN that is ownable (barcode under GS1's lawsuit/settlement) you'll find a different company name than your own, this is the original company who purchased the entire block of barcodes from the UCC (Now GS1-US) before 2002 and has since sold their full barcode rights to us, Bar Codes Talk.
      Note: GS1 refuses to update their database with the current legal owner of the prefix/GTIN, which means that the name displayed will not match your own. They are able to do this because the absence of up to date information is not a falsehood, it is omission. This is business-as-usual for a monopoly like GS1, which is protecting it's interests and does not want to recount the class-action suit they had to settle.
      First, let’s dispel two misconceptions:
      Barcode numbers/images do not contain any product data/price information.
      There is not a single, global database for retail barcode/product information.
      To Assign/Register your barcode, do the following:
      Step 1: First thing you would do is personally assign the bar codes to your products (Yes, it is as simple as it sounds), this is done by you/your company and you would have to keep your own records of these associations. Many use spreadsheets or their own Point of Sale system, either way we recommend having your records backed up in case your computer crashes.
      Step 2: Provide this data to the store or online retailer where your product will be sold at. Each store has their own internal, private database (aka: POS / Point-Of-Sales System) that stores your data. This means that every new store/website you approach won't know anything about your product until you provide the data for them to put into their private system.
      Step 3: Repeat for all new stores/websites/distributors you partner with to sell your barcoded products.
      Note: A barcode scanning app is NOT the same thing as a retail store/scanner. When scanning a barcode using a smartphone app, these apps aggregate multiple publicly available product databases such as Google Shopping, Amazon, Shopify, as well as other ecommerce databases. To get your product to show up on these private apps, you would need to reach out to these private app "companies" and directly upload your product data to them.
      Please reach out to our support team if you have any other questions.

      They're essentially one and the same. GTIN is a blanket term similar to "barcode". A GTIN-12 is a UPC, a GTIN-13 is an EAN. When you take a deep dive into barcodes you'll realize there are a lot of unnecessary acronyms which can be confusing, once you're past that it's all pretty simple.
