Global Trade Item Number (GTIN): 50 years of collaboration, innovation and leadership

  • 31 March 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the GTIN. On 31 March 1971, industry leaders agreed to use a ‘universal product code’ for product identification. The identifier is called the Global Trade Item Number, or GTIN today. That historical meeting paved a long path for collaboration, innovation and leadership. Today, with a need for much more information about products, industries are meeting the same challenges that they faced 50 years ago: a need to collaborate, to think big and to innovate. Getting this right is the challenge of a generation. The next 50 years begins today!

    I had no idea how these codes came about and now have a healthy respect for them. Excellent presentation and easily understood. These people were pioneers and I salute them,

    As my Dad was an Engineer at MSI back in 70-71 who helped design UPC and it was in the beginning it was made for inventories(Alpha Beta Supermarkets) and he helped with magnetic stripes development which originally was made for security locks which turned into mag stripes on CC's.....
