As someone born in the UK I feel a lot of people think like this bloke that the UK is the greatest place on the planet and everyone in the world wishes they lived there. Having moved to Australia 18 months ago I can see a massive difference in living standards and the UK only seems to be getting worse.

    • @chriswatson1698

If you add 500,000 people in the space of a year, living standards will be reduced.
Land is finite. Every extra person makes every square metre of that land more valuable and more expensive: supply and demand. Great for anyone who owns some land. They will scream "racism" at anyone who wants to reduce demand for housing.
But an increase in population means that the younger and poorer members of the community must pay more and more for less and less living space.
500,000 extra people will compete with the indigenous for the time and attention of health care workers and teachers whose training they haven't paid for.

Can someone ask these people who's going to pay your pensions when the baby boomers retire? I'm an ex-pat living in Canada and have no desire to return to live in the UK. I have 2 uncles buried in North Africa fighting with the British Army against the Italians in what is now Libya, yet, while I grew up in the UK I was always reminded that I was a "foreigner". I believed that the issue was generational and when the younger folks grew up this "superiority complex" would end. Clearly I was mistaken and, if anything, Britain is more polarised than it has ever been. I wish all my friends well and pray that you get out of this apparent mess.

I think Nick is wrong in imagining a lot of refugees want to come to the UK as it is now known that the living conditions are poor for most of us AND the social services don’t give away much money contrary to public belief. Masses of Brits move to France and Spain because the the social service support is twice of even three times as much. Per person you would have 90sqm per person and 360sqm for a family of 4.
You should not have Houston housing then. That would not work.
But, suppose you would have ' 2 x Texas' , you would have a density of 5500/km2. That is similar to the Bordeaux municipaloty proper.
That would be more r'realistic'. The city does not have high risers, mainly 3-6 story buildings . A lot of 3 story (semidetachhouses have a swimming pool in the backyard . To give a picture of the space in Bordeaux centre ..
