  • It's finally time to install the vinyl siding on the garage. There are so many 'How to install vinyl siding' videos out there, I didn't see the point in making another one. Nor did I see the point in filming myself hand nailing over 1200 square feet of vinyl siding. Therefore, I focus on a few tips to make your vinyl siding installation easier and look more professional.

    It might be time to invest in a titanium hammer...that was A LOT of hand nailing 😂

    • @syntaxlies82
      @syntaxlies82 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Next time use siding screws. Better for high winds that can rip the roofing nails out

    • @hsdesignstudio

      @@syntaxlies82 I can see that being an issue in some places, very unlikely here. If we get winds that strong, I am more worried about shingles than the siding.

    Wondering what your thoughts are on installing B&B horizontally? I'm redoing an 8x8 shed and bought left-over B&B (at a very good price) but it could leave me with a lot of waste pieces if I install it vertically. Any cons of going against the grain so to speak as I'm thinking of doing?

  • @tamil1001

    I'm planning to build a custom home with 1" of polyiso exterior insulation. Would I just use longer nails to attach to the OSB underneath? If I did strapping or rainscreen it would have to be horizontal to attach board and batten and I don't think horizontal rainscreen is recommended? Do you have any suggestions?

    Looking to put up something similar on my cabin, I didn't quite see how you did the corners. Is there a special corner piece? Great video BTW, don't assume people are not interested 😉

    • @hsdesignstudio
      @hsdesignstudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I did my corners a little differently, in that I used PVC trim instead of vinyl siding specific corners. You can see exactly how I did this in the previous episode here: th-cam.com/video/4DZCn-TBllw/w-d-xo.html

    • @hsdesignstudio
      @hsdesignstudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are into 1/2" OSB. Siding screws are another option with more bite. However this garage is in a very sheltered location and high winds ripping the siding off are not a concern of mine.

      @@hsdesignstudio Thanks man! Nice. I"m trying to find information on the width of each piece? Certainteed has most colors in 7" and some colors in 8". Mastic doesn't say what their widths are on board and batten vinyl. I guess I'll call these places up and email them, etc. thanks!! Plus some board and batten vinyl looks a little cheesy imo but not yours.

    • @hsdesignstudio
      @hsdesignstudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Todd K No worries at all 👍 I believe each piece had a 7" exposure, plus roughly 1 inch for the tongue and nailing strip. I've installed a fair amount of vinyl siding, and I was really satisfied with this one. I've even had a few people walking by ask if it was metal siding because it doesn't have the "cheaper look" some vinyl can have. Good luck!

    At 5min32sec where you finished the back wall of the garage, was there a j-channel along the top of that siding? Is j-channel needed there before you can start the peak section of siding?

    • @hsdesignstudio
      @hsdesignstudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes- There is one on top of the bottom board and batten, then a drip ledge, then the bottom j channel for the peak area. I use j channel anytime the siding ends. It hides the unfinished end.

  • @shug2795
    @shug2795 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Where is the critical info? Where did you start from? Did you use a starter strip? Why did you install a J channel adjacent to your corner mold when it has an inherent indent to start your first strip?
    How did you butt J channel corners? How would you seam vertical to horizontal vinyl?

    • @hsdesignstudio
      @hsdesignstudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. It isn't meant to be a how-to video. It's part of our Garage series building a garage from start to finish. But to answer some of your questions: I used J-channel at the corners because in the last episode you would have seen that my corners aren't using vinyl siding corners, but instead a PVC trim (I prefer the aesthetics of this). As for starter strips, every manufacturer has slightly different instructions. Some suggest an actual purchased starter strip, others suggest just cutting off the 'groove' from a piece of siding and using that. I don't think there is an inherently wrong place to start an install. As long as you move in a continuous direction, the install should go smoothly. I discussed my transition from vertical to horizontal in another comment, but I just used side-by-side J-channels.
