Great video. I'm planning to build a custom home with Zip R-6 sheathing, Keene mesh type of rainscreen which I think maybe cheaper to install compared to wood furring strips, and Hardie board and batten. You're house looks amazing!
Thank you, we love the look I cant believe more people don't use it! Do you have an experienced installer to do the work? We used strapping behind ours but it is vertically oriented in all cases possible.
@@BuildLessons Yes. Living in US in the state of Maryland hardie cement siding is very popular and there are many installers. The nice thing about the Keene easy fur strips for the rain screen is they can be installed vertically or horizontally. The large hardie vertical panels I believe can be fastened to the OSB and not necessarily all the way into the studs but not sure about this. Did you use any continuous(exterior) insulation on your home?
@@tamil1001 We did use continuous exterior insulation. It is a more Canadian product called BP Excel. It is an R5 product that is not as solid as the Zip system, and without as many glues so it actually breathes which is interesting. Keeping our wood strapping vertical was very difficult on some sections of the board and batten areas and around windows. We have had no water issues yet. The installer and myself were very meticulous about flashing and caulking details, but if I were to do it again I would plan to incorporate a drainable furring option like you are using! The one nice thing about wood strapping is that it does not compress - I did worry about that with mesh style furring products, that it might create a wavy finish by getting slightly compressed where the hard and trims were fastened to the sheathing.
I would definitely say we would use it again! It produced the exact vision I had for the exterior of our home. We will see what happens when the boys are old enough to start taking slap shots - but hopefully we can point them in another direction instead of at the Hardie Board. 😂
Not sure if I missed it, but did you use smooth or textured for the window and door trim? You mentioned using textured for the batten, which was very helpful. Thanks for a great video!
Great video! We are building in Michigan and I have stacks of the JH prefinished waiting for me to install. My wife was second guessing our decision but this should convince her that we made the right choice.
I love the way it looks. So for a house your size how much more expensive total for the party board versus vinyl? I think that the party board would actually be a cheaper alternative for me because I'm actually thinking about Brick 🧱. But I love that updated farmhouse look that you have but I also love brick 🧱. Let me know what you think and did you consider red brick or different color brick? Curious The price difference. I will probably be building my house summer in Florida on 19 acres. Thank you I enjoyed your video 👍
It was similar to the price of break at the time, but it’s very difficult to find labour for brick installation here these days. To be honest, it’s been quite a while since I looked back at our quotes to know how much more it was then vinyl, but it is a lifetime product, and, after seeing people attempt the white looking vinyl, it is so much brighter, and just does not come off the same!
@@BuildLessons I agree it's definitely worth the money and looks way better than vinyl. I think a combination of vertical siding and brick or stone is the way to go. I think red brick 🧱 and white board and batten would be a great look and eye catcher. Thank you
reminds me of the siding they used to use before vinyl siding, on old houses, that id see as a kid.. i dont know what it was called.. probably asbestos siding or something.. usually green for some reason.. the only reason im watching this vid is because james hardie was moving a company nearby, and i was seeing what they made.. my house had wood siding that was repainted over the decades, and then grandpa got vinyl siding thats still on many years later.. i never liked it much, but its held up for a long time now, and ill probably have it till i die.. i doubt id put much money into this old house.. had to reshingle the roof recently.. cant have it raining in the house.. when that stack under the toilet finally crumbles away, i may have to do something about that.. cant have my poop just falling onto the basement floor.. but other than that, im not going to put the least amount i can into this old house.. you know, all these goons building up around my house, making noise and sucking up money.. i could do without them all.. so, i figure if my house gets hit by a tornado or whatever, ill just move somewhere more peaceful.. but yeah, back to the siding.. when they first installed the vinyl siding, i thought it looked pretty cheapo, but gramps was tired of always painting it, and i cant blame him.. its held up for many decades now.. probably a lot longer than that crap you got will.. but i can understand how a person wants a certain look.. vinyl siding does look a little bleh.. and when you push on it, its all moving around.. but hey, what can you expect in the modern age of tarda progression
You spoke about caulking the battens, is there anywhere you did not caulk (aside from along the bottom edge) for movement of the product before painting?
Had white for 17 years and yeah it can look pretty grungy after the winter and green on the shaded side. My husband bought a pressure washer and cleaned it every spring and I would go behind him, touch up places with a little paint. If you are good at doing a little maintenance every spring it's not too difficult to keep it looking good.
To be honest I cannot remember off hand. I just looked back into my emails to see if I had it but I cannot find that name. If I get into my paper files in the coming months and see it, I can let you know. I believe it was from the Dutch Qaulity Stone company: dutchqualitystone.com. Hopefully this helps!
Yes , I DIY resided my 34 year old midwest house with it. On the bottom ground row I used a textured PVC 1 X 8 with one routed beveled edge that the LP lap siding went on top of. It looked very similar to the LP siding texture and should help moisture/snow from causing an issue with any swelling on the LP, which was the main complaint I heard. It was easy to work with. My neighbor had James Hardi put on by professionals(the weight and cutting dust I couldnt deal with). All my cuts were painted with matching color as I installed. My previous siding was 8"beveled cedar and that had warpped and cracked quite a bit on the south and west sides of the house. So far (3 yrs ) the LP is looking good.
Hi, would you be willing to share what color and brand of paint you used on your exterior? I am building a house and am hoping for this similar look. Thanks.
Awesome, good on you, it will look great. Do you have a page you are chronicling the build on our anything? Let me know if your have any other questions, I spent hours researching this product prior to use and during install!
It’s called Hardie. Look up James Hardie products, it’s all fibrous cement. I can’t speak for all coast but if you go to the gulf coast 95% of all the beach houses use this because it last forever
hi How wide are the battens? We are in the UK and Hardie board do not sell all their products here so we are trying to copy the style! Great house and video by the way?
If I missed any question you have about the product in terms of moisture and warranty issues, hit me up in the comments!
What stone veneer did you use for the wainscoting? GenStone?
What distance is your board and batten
@@Meiszee4k He says 16" about 2 minutes in to the video.
This is my dream home. It’s so perfect, absolutely beautiful
I think it looks great. I'm going to be using Hardi siding, we are in an extreme fire danger area.
This is such a thorough video! Thank you!!!
Great video!! Thanks for taking the time to do it
Thank you, glad you enjoyed! Any questions I didn’t cover?
It looks very beautiful! Good choice!
I did board and batten 50% price increase from horizontal vinyl

You have a be home. The color blends well with the stone.🙂🙂
Wow is this your house congrats man you guys must be hard workers to get to this point at your age.
Thanks Tyler, lots of hard work mixed with some luck with the housing market around here!
Certainteed and Royal Building Products have an insulated board and batten vinyl siding that comes in a wider profile, about a foot between battens

What type of windows did you use- aluminum, composite...?? Trying to find the best bang for the buck on black windows- yours look lovely.
Don’t use aluminium in Canada get pvc if you’re in the gta I can give you the name of a very affordable manufacturer

After you caulked, did you touch up the caulk lines with paint, or did you buy the OSI color matched caulk?
What color /manufacturer is the stone veneer? It looks great with the Hardie.
Thanks for sharing, really helpful video

Until I saw your video, I was thinking of going with the CanExel siding. Yours looks so good! Would you say it was double the cost of vinyl?
Because it is.My house is 90 percent brick but just to do Hqrdie siding on just one room on the only part that is wood was almost 5k.
I am installing Hardie board after Cedar and stucco rotted out
Thanks for this video!
What stone veneer did you use on this? The color is just the amount of perfect grays.
You spoke about caulking the battens, is there anywhere you did not caulk (aside from along the bottom edge) for movement of the product before painting?
Are your battens a Hardie trim? What size are your battens?
No they are actually a Hardie product sold as battens! I believe they are 2" if memory serves me well.
Did you fill the holes on batten ?
Did you have to paint your siding or did it come pre painted? Interested in doing this on our house when we build. Thanks!
What is the spacing of your boards?
The battens you mean? We opted for 16”, hopefully this answers your question!
@@BuildLessons yes thank you
What is the stone veneer product you used?
I'm trying to figure out how you finished the flooring and skirt on the from porch
Not as much as brick but more than siding just flashing draining is important I just built my home in Tennessee farm house
Nice! Are your porch posts wrapped with the Hardie siding as well?
This is the most Canadian-sounding man I've ever heard 😂
Did you say you i stalled ridgit foam insulation under this? How did you attach it? Thanks
but what was the cost of the house?

Beautiful house. We are about to start our home build and love the look and want to do the same. What color white did you end up going with?
It was the Arctic white, mill look (not smooth)!
What is the width of your battens? Are the battens the same material as the trimboard just ripped to whatever width you prefer?
What color was the hardie you used? Was it the Arctic white ? Or light mist?
Arctic White!
how much did it take you to do this? just curious
What size reveal is your hardibacker?
Nail holes!
They used to have hockey rinks for kids to play on….must be old school
What stone veneer did you use on this house? what's the name of the color?

I know this sounds crazy but black gutters my man and some charcoal trim
Do you mind sharing what stone veneer that you used?
Did you look at pre-painted LP siding?

So hail coudl really ding it up then especially if it’s white..
its made from fiber cement, hail will not damage it
Hi, would you be willing to share what color and brand of paint you used on your exterior? I am building a house and am hoping for this similar look. Thanks.

@@park4303 are the battens just ripped 5/4 trimboard?
Vinyl? Seriously? Why would anyone consider using that other than cheap?
I've had Hardi Plank on both my homes over the past 31 years and I would pick it over the Vinyl everytime. The Vinyl is just so ugly.
I believe far overated in my opinion and not maintenance free
69 acres
Vinyl siding is rubbish
House poor 🎉
