    Does the IKEA Jarvjallet solve the biggest problem for the IKEA Markus, with adding seat depth adjustment? Or does the softer seat pad on the Markus make it the better of the two chairs for overall comfort? In this video, I break down the main differences between the two chairs to help you decide if one is better for you than the other.

    Big fan of my Markus (it was £135 when I brought it) but the lumbar was causing back pain. I have removed it entirely and much prefer it. It is really quite simple to remove.
    Remove the back (3 bolts), then unzip the cover (mine needed cleaning - it collects a lot of dust), then undo 4 bolts to remove a bracket. You can then remove 2 screws and you can remove the pillow.
    The pillow case has a zip and the pillow could be replaced with any material I would imagine. There is also definitely room for custom adjustment of the lumbar position if you have a little bit of creativity.

    The (awful) Markus lumbar foam is removable! It takes a little tinkering but it's doable, and actually really easy if you do it while building the chair. You can even replace the foam so you still have lumbar support that doesnt feel rock hard.

      Also, alternatively if you don’t want to remove screws and all to get to the lumbar: just unzip the bottom of the backrest, carefully reach out with your hand to the lumbar in between the mesh and unzip the lumbar itself. The foam in it will expand and you’ll have a flatter lumbar and softer support. Just did this and the backrest already feels way better.

    My brother has a Markus and it's a nice chair, I didn't even realize it had lumbar until you pointed it out in this video but it's not terrible, not great but not terrible. The recline is nice and the chair is fine but you can tell if you used it day to day in an office and long term it would not be that good. I have a Haworth chair and the foam and the material is just so much better, you can really tell the difference between a lower tier chair and a higher end one. The problem with chairs is people sit in them for a few minutes before they make a decision which really is not long enough.

    I had a Markus for a few years but the non-adjustable armrests really killed that chair for me. They were too high up for me and really threw my posture off, and also prevented me from lowering my desk as much as I'd like. I removed them eventually, but then the lack of elbow support became an issue... other than that, the chair was pretty comfortable and had a good run.

    I went to IKEA and after some tests I bought the Markus. It just fit me and it has a fabric option which is better for cat owners - and I think it looks better as well. The chair is really good. The huge con for me are the arms - I'm not using it at the momment. Lumbar support is ok for me, for now. The Järvfjället is more expensive and I think that besides it's more ajustability options, doesnt justify it's price. I prefer the feeling of the Markus in general.

    • @andrephx90

      The cat comment got me! Started my "research" today and I really wish I could mix some aspects of the two IKEA models. Markus really looks like the winner but those arms...I don´t know. I like adjustments! But back to the cat, mine, which is a saint and never ruins anything, has a soft spot for that Jarvjallet seating material... That said seems like I´m gonna spend an hour on the chair section of the nearest IKEA...

    I bought my Markus from Ikea 29th December 2019 and it has been used almost all day and every day and evening since. Today, 21.1.23 over three years on, I still love it, however, although everything still works as new, it has developed an annoying 'clunk' in the seat mechanism whenever I move slightly. As it is located in an upstairs bedroom used as an office, the clunk is a disturbance to anyone trying to get to sleep in the next bedroom and downstairs. I'm hoping that with my receipt and proof of purchase, I can have the seat mechanism part replaced under Ikea's 10-year guarantee. I'll let you know if they do.

    I'm 6"4. I've used the Markus chair for 12 years. I'm on my second chair. The vinyl was worn out on the first one, and one of the armrests had broken clean off at the screw. I sit in this chair on average 5-6 hours a day without issues. When/if this Markus chair breaks, i'm getting another one, they are that good for the money. It just feels super solidly planted on the ground, and it's not flimsy.

    • @TasnuArakun

      I'm the same height and I find the back too low. The headrest digs into my shoulders if I sit straight. My previous IKEA chair sucked in many other ways (I don't remember which model) but at least it had an adjustable back. You could loosen two hex screws, slide it up or down and then tighten them again. It boggles my mind why this chair doesn't include that simple feature.

    • @placeholdername3206

      @@TasnuArakun Maybe you're more torso than legs. Some people are all legs. People are built different. I'm more 50/50. I don't see how the headrest would ever be a problem. Are you sure we talking about the same chair?

      @TasnuArakun 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@placeholdername3206 That might be it. Now that you mention it, I often have problems with ergonomic chairs without adjustable backs when others my height don't. Yes, it's an Ikea Markus that I bought six years ago. My shoulders rest against the lower edge of the headrest making it so that I can't lean back comfortably without slumping. Other than that it's a great chair. Very sturdy and very durable.

  • @WhenIWasAKitten
    @WhenIWasAKitten 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I tried these recently. They're easily the best two chairs IKEA offer of this kind. I settled on Markus.
    Main reasons:
    * Height
    I am short (162cm) small frame woman. Markus I can sit in it without shoes and touch the floor on the lowest height setting. This is important as my old office chair I hate having to rest my feet on the part the caster wheels attach to.
    * Solid feeling throughout
    * Controls easy to use/more ergonomic
    Järvfjället, this chair is definitely for taller person. I could not touch the ground with my feet on lowest setting. I liked the slimmer chair width wise, it felt better for for me than Markus. Firmer chair cushion was also acceptable. Head pad felt too high up even on the lowest setting so redundant.
    * Seat never felt stable/solid. OK you have to pull the left arm to release the lock to slide, and it locks when you let go. However there is a gap between the sliding rail so the seat basically rattles on top if you shift position. We checked another display model and it also had this wobble. I see some suggest putting tape in the rail or returning it for another.
    The adjustable lumbar support was nice to have, but I didn't really need it to be movable. On Markus it is in a good position for me.
    The armrests were also rickety and uncomfortable plastic.
    Tilt control is different, and the same new mechanism is on their gaming chairs. I don't like it, you have to pull to release, then push it in to lock. If you are short it is hard to do this and set the ideal position at the same time. It's tricky to do on Markus but even harder on Järvfjället and similar.

    Edit: My Jarvjallet has become squeaky after just 7 months.
    I've recently returned the Markus for the Jarv. I'm 5'6 and personally much prefer the Jarv, the back support is better, better armrests (especially compared to the new Markus model) and the ability to move the seat forward or back (which I use more than expected) is a plus. However the seat cushion on the Jarv is a lot more firm and depending on the person, it may be uncomfortable after a while.

    The arm rests on my Markus are not padded. They are the worst. I'm considering hacking different armrests onto it.

      They've got more padding than the Jarvfjallet, which is just chunks of plastic.

    LMAO. I just watched your tier ranking video and both those chairs you ranked at F, alongside a kitchen chair, ffs. Here, you recommend it... Title: "is (the chair) still the best...
    Nice consistency, bro.

      I wouldn’t say watching a comparison from two years ago, from one of the three that rank in the tier list is going to match up. It’s a different format of video. Personally, in 2023 I went from D tier to F. As you look at the ever changing market, better stuff has come out from a comfort perspective, especially for the price. Opinions can change over time as well. It wasn’t ranked high in any tier lists so going from D to F isn’t that crazy. It’s not a great chair.

      I personally wouldn't trust a single product from Autonomous, as they're usually overpriced and of a cheap quality.
