You’d expect a 4060 to be better in every way than a 3060 rather than a little better with occasions where it’s a lot worse.

The sad part is when you realize this uplift was one of the _better_ ones of the generation. Look at the 3060ti>4060ti or 6800xt>7800xt. Many cards gave pathetic uplift or got price hikes that made them an even _worse_ value. Even with price drops there's nothing that stands out and even the best case scenarios can't muster up better than "well I guess it's not _that_ bad."
AMD and Nvidia were perfectly happy for decades making 25-30% margins. Neither them or their shareholders want to go back now after enjoying the 50-60% margins of the crypto boom.

It not shit really, i can confirm the power to performance is insane on the 40xx series cards, it all depends on what you upgrading from. In my case i had a rtx 2060 then upgraded to a rtx 4070 super. Basically was a 130% increase in performance but if you have a 30xx series card i would suggest wating for new cards to come rather. All i can say is the 4070 super is a beast and even though it was not meant for 4k gaming i can play 80% of the AAA titles on 4k med/high settings and still hit +-60fps. The 4060 was basically made for fortnite, and other online shooters, 8GB VRAM won't allow for proper frame generation, you can still use RT on 8GB's but some games will do horrible texture swaps and some others drop significant FPS, DLSS helps a little, unless on performance, and FG doesn't do much cause 8GB won't let it properly
The 3060, isn't much slower, and AMD FG saves the GPU when it struggles, also amazing RT performance, a lot of VRAM headroom over 8GB cards, so a lot safer, Path Tracing ultra with DLSA Balanced on CP2077 gives at least 30 FPS, with FSR3 FG it goes at least +50 FPS, and it doesn't look that bad, unless you are very sensitive to high FPS and notice the littlw ghosting effects, but that ain't going to knock you out or hurt the eye.
Even the 30FPS on Path Tracing look so good and its so smooth that it won't feel like 30 FPS
But the 4060 could give a considerable difference in high FPS shooters
Everything's fine on 4060 unless Nvidia FG
The 4060 Ti 16GB works excellent in terms of Frame Generation

The only thing I got out of this test is that Nv is holding back their middle to high-end cards by not putting 12+GB Vram on them. Nothing new unfortunately, been like this for a looong time. Which is why I saved up money for the 5080 (hopefully) this time around. Games are easily hitting 8GB Vram usage now, even without RT which also uses more VRAM. If I can't afford the 5080 and the 5070 has only 12GB Vram, i'll consider getting a 2nd hand 4080 instead, based on performance.

In the Avatar test, GPU memory usage on the 3060 goes way beyond 8GB, and yet the 4060 doesn't use more system RAM, which suggests to me that the game reduces some quality settings when not having enough RAM, rather than spill into CPU RAM. This might be the reason the 4060 has more of an advantage in this game over the 3060 compared to other games.

I own both a n RTX 3060 12GB and an RTX 4060 8gb in my htpc gaming setups. I don’t use frame generation at 1080p/1440p (with RTX 4060) so I’m fine with using FSR frame generation ‘IF’ needed…… especially with FSR 3.1 coming out now in games and modders, I’m sure, adding tweaks for a drag n drop into older titles etc🤤🤯👍🥳.
Saying that it appears that newer game engines like UE5 uses vram more efficiently than older engines so maybe, just maybe, Nvidias ram skimping (8gb gpus) was known by them from initial engine testing for gpus 🧐😳?
Imo if you’re a gamer who uses a lot of texture mods etc on older games …. I’d go with the RTX 3060 12GB …..otherwise get the RTX 4060 for the added performance….. but that’s me 😁👍
