EVO 16 & SP8 could be the perfect pairing to record a drumkit - but how would a producer get the best out of a drummer?
Pro Session Drummer Gareth Grover is in the studio at Tileyard London with Al, showing us what it takes to be a working session player and working with a producer in a situation with limited time - whilst still getting world class results.
Al Lawson also takes us through all the microphones he uses on Gareth's kit to get the best flexibility and power - and how the EVO16 and EVO SP8 in the EVO Expanded System give him the scope to capture extra sources such as room microphones to get a full sound for use in the mixing session.
We also see Gareth and Al using Smartgain to cut down on setup time and make the most of the session. The EVO Expanded system allows for them to set the perfect levels across all 16 channels (or even 24 if required) in under 20 seconds. This professional studio solution is truly in a league of its own - copied, never equalled.

Sweet recording system! I wonder if it would be possible to have the Evo 16 and the SP8 in separate rooms, linked by the optical cables, to do simultaneous recording of say the drummer in one room and the rest of the band in the next room. What would be the cable length limits and latency with that?

The technical maximum of TOSlink cables is 10 Meters although, we'd typically say to keep them below 5 meters unless you're buying really high-quality cables to avoid dropouts and clocking issues. There would be no latency caused by this as the data transmission on the ADAT port is done via light, which is a pretty speedy way to send data!
It may be easier/more reliable to have the EVO 16 and SP8 in the same room and just use longer XLR cables or a stage box to feed audio from the drum room to the SP8.

@@weareevoaudio thanks so much for the helpful reply. The next thing I wonder is how it would be if I have the Evo 16 in my master control room hooked up to my computer running Logic and the SP8 less than 10 meters away in my bigger studio, recording the band with 8 inputs.

In such a use case, I would only need to run the optical cables between the two rooms, and the master control room’s evo 16 inputs could also be used to do vocal overdubs and other recording tasks when needed, while the outputs could feed my monitors.

That should in theory work, just make sure you have high-quality TOSlink cables to minimise the risk of data loss over such a long optical connection.

@@weareevoaudio thanks! I look forward to trying it out!
