In addition to being a great reformer who would bring law and order in a scenario of cultural decay after the War of Wrath, I think Sauron saw himself as a Promethean figure who would lift Humanity out of cultural prehistory and technological ignorance: The Silmarillion says that the men of the East and South built cities of stone and had access to metallurgical knowledge.
And bringing economic benefits: he proved himself a good economist in Númenor by multiplying the Island's wealth.
Furthermore, he had to see himself as a deity of a great world unification: a single theocratic government, a technocratic political-economic system and a religious reformer to bring true belief through dogmatic ideas.
This religious engineering reminds me (in some ways) of Gnosticism: a liberating god (Melkor) to rid rational beings of "Archons" (Valar) from a "Demiurgic monster" (Eru) who imprisoned everyone in a world of war and death. Interesting that Sauron spoke this of Melkor in the Second Age, but later he claimed to be Melkor in the Third Age.

Morgoth may have been the original, and indeed he was more powerful
Sauron, however, learned from all Melkor's mistakes. Indeed, he was only bested due to the intervention of Iluvatar, both in Numenor and with Gollum's fall into the fires.
He is evil at its most dangerous shape, the shape which hides itself as good, and that which does not allow its hatred and malice to overcome its cunning, and what a cunning Suaron has
Edit: Regardless of what anyone things about Shadow of War, it has by far the best design for Sauron's armored form

Though he learned from his masters mistakes he also did exactly what Morgoth did. He put all his power into one thing and it caused his downfall. Morgoth put himself into middle earth itself but he did it so completely that he was so weak by the end of the war of wrath that he just couldn’t fight. Sauron had the one ring but was so sure of its power that he never thought to protect mount doom or just have someone watching it to make sure no one was there. He thought a head but was also very narrow minded in that sense.

@@the_king_of_kings_3413 Morgoth's power, like the rest of the Valar, was bound the world, but his power went into many things. Instead of restraining himself and maintaining his power to govern the heats and colds, his put his power out into the world through corrupting the physical world, other spirits like Balrogs, and, of course, the living: Elves and Men. Sauron didn't lose because Mount Doom was taken. He lost because he took the field. His hubris defeated him. It may have been mere chance that Isildur cut the ring from his hand, but he underestimated the alliance of Elves and remnants of Numenor.

I first read The Hobbit when I was in the fifth grade in the mid-90s. Being a fan before the movies did create somewhat of a different perspective then those I know whose first exposure to Tolkien was the movies. Still, this channel, and Tolkien Untangled's channel, have really rekindled my love for the legendarium. Thank you. Truly.

That is a GREAT cover of the entire story of Sauron. There's a lot readers of the side books by Christopher Tolkien could follow along with, but the nuances of the stories and how and when they all tie together is a great refresher. Wonder if you ever thought about doing a WHOLE STORY coverage over many videos based solely on timeline? where you do not skip ahead to other parts but keep everything in concise order, from start to finish? it would be a lot of videos and a lot of planning, but I've always wondered if it could be done. And who better to ask than you.

If the writers of rings of power had simply watched this video and considered the massive amount of material they had to work with, it would have actually been good. Idk who they had interpret the source material but whoever it was did an abysmal job. They completely fumbled such a massive opportunity for something great. Such a bummer.
Never looked into this stuff before, such a rich world that Tolkien constructed. Lovin the vids!
Does anyone know if there is anywhere in the lore that references the line from Anatar in the latest ROP episode where he says he was tortured by Morgoth? I'm curious about that story in particular, or if they just made it up. Lol

I always wondered what Sauron and Finrods duel would look like from outside and how he became Morgoths right hand despite the fact that Melkor is the one who brought all this imperfection to world. Something he hated beyond all things. It makes you wonder how his relation with Melkor actually worked.

@@oguzhanenescetin5702 Arda did not start out in a finished state. The original thought was for Melkor to start implementing the designs for Arda and then Manwë and the other Valar would bring those ideas to completion. But Melkor basically wanted everything his way and attempted to take complete control of Arda. I think that is what attracted Sauron; having one being at the top rather than something resembling a committee so to speak.

    • @BN13-h9c
      @BN13-h9c ปีที่แล้ว +13

Maybe Sauron didn't see Melkor as bringing imperfection. Maybe he saw Illuvatar's plan as chaotic due to allowing everything free will, and saw Melkor's dominance as forcing order. Under Melkor, everything would be subservient to a single will. Without Melkor, freedom would mean that everything would have its own will and direction, constantly conflicting with one another. Therefore maybe he saw freedom as chaos.

Hot take: Silmarillion is better than LotR. While LotR was the OG quest fantasy, it really can't be set apart from the many similar works that have been made since. The Silmarillion, however, is a different matter altogether. It gives a lot more meaning to LotR and also gives some characters more depth.

Even Bard-dûr shows Sauron’s intricate personality. A physically impossible, grotesque but at the same time genial mountain-sized fortress, which fuses darkness and black metals with ‘adamant’. Sometimes Barad-dûr is mentioned in place of Sauron himself, and seems to embody the Dark Lord. Sometimes he is incarnated by metaphors, such as the Eye. Sauron as immensely more depth than one could think, but it derives from subtle details and other works such as The Silmarillion.

As someone that knew nothing more than the story from the films, this made me realise how Amazon's show completely deviates from the original story. Although it's entertaining, it's also terrible that someone has given the writers green light to butcher such a great story.
I could understand if they had no source material (GOT example), and I could even understand if they had to omit parts that could be less relevant, but they've completely changed it. It seems to have nothing to do with LOTR except character and places names. Buuuuuu Amazon!!!
