Word on advice on first reading on Silmarillion. Don't try remembering all characters, all their names, or family connections. You will loose time, and later, you can always go back, and re-read about someone that you want to know more about. Just read it, as it is, without effort of remembering and connecting everything, and most important characters, and events, will pop up anyway. Silmarillion is definitely not a book for single reading.
I'm in absolute awe by the amount of work and cross-referencing that went into this video! As a somewhat casual LOTR reader, I learned a ton of new things in the last 26 minutes. Thank you so much for the great content!!
And yet he cant even get the time right that Frodo left bag end . Frodo had not left the Shire that Morning that the Nazgul was talking to the Old Gaffer. Frodo was still there and overheard the 2 of them talking and it was just after Sunset.
In my opinion, the single greatest achievement of any character in the entire series is Eowyn slaying the Witch King! Of course Master Brandybuck deserves a hearty and well earned assist. Brave little hobbit, well done!
I was watching the extended edition of Return of the King last night. Eomir said that Merry would succumb to fear during the battle. Instead he stabs probably the scariest being in the battle in the back of the knee.
Same here! I was so pumped when the 9 Nazgul came knocking at Saruman's door... I read that part when only PJ's FOTR had came out in theatre, so it was a bit before all the infos on the 3rd age was available everywhere through games, fan websites/forums, and videos like this one were available So it hadn't been spoiled for me yet that there were some cool deleted scenes of what the 9 did during the first book when they weren't seen by the fellowship... so all the additional stuff was so exciting, I loved Bree and the spies, like Bill Ferny or the "goblin-man" who was at the Prancing Pony, who was working for Saruman, who was paid by Sauron, etc... One part of the nazgul travels I wish this video had covered was during the Two Towers, when the 3 groups of orcs have captured Merry and Pippin; Grishnakh had a Nazgul on a fell beast who was following him with a band of 40 orcs (Ugluk had 80 Uruks, so he outnumbered him, and there were also some orcs from the mines of Moria who had followed them to avenge their dead, that Grishnakh tries to rally to him when they declare that they just wanted to try to catch them, but now that they're away they want to go back to the mines. I don't recall these Moria orcs being specifically numbered*** *see end of the post for details on that*, but Boromir killed a bunch of them before the Isengard Uruks killed him with their bow) Ugluk insists that Grishnakh sticks with him until they reach Orthanc, since he suspects him to want to try to bring the hobbits to the Nazgul to bring them to Sauron. Sadly in the movies they fight over eating Merry & Pippin, and Grishnakh looked cool but had little dialogue. Worse, in the extended scenes, it's implied that they were sent by Saruman to meet with the Uruks and come back, so they wouldn't even have the fell beast to fly them away... I was saddened by the simplification, but whatever, they were still pretty damn good movies. ***that part was actually filmed by Peter Jackson but never included in the film; the Mora Goblins following the Fellowship I mean, with the sun setting down and all until the run too far away. the footage was used extensively for promotion photos, and the LOTR collectible card game, aka *LOTR TCG* by Decipher, it was a great game that ran from 2001 to 2007, and was a lot of fun to play on the side for Magic players. Too bad the online servers closed in 2010, but since Decipher lost the licence in 2007 they couldn't release new editions and interet faded. Anyway, I was wondering which Nazgul it was or if there was only one; Ugluk seems to refer to only one while talking about the plan, but he also didn't know about the ring, while it's clear that Grishnakh knows about Gollum and the ring. Dang it, this morning I told myself i'd stop writing essays on youtube >< I tried
Reminds me of side material in works like Halo and Star Wars Legends. You may not have needed checking up on them, but golly, they really spice up the main works via expanding upon them and explaining the occasional plot holes and noodle incidents.
Funny anecdote: in the original drafts of LOTR, Frodo was going to push Gollum with the Ring to his death in the Sammath Naur. Then, the entrance of the Chamber is blocked by the Witch King: either Frodo says he is the Ringmaster and commands him to jump in the fire, or Sa heroically appears and stabs the Witch-King from behind, slaying him. In the oldest version there was even a sketched duel between Sam and a surviving Ringwraith on a rock island floating over the magma. Outstanding 😃
Interesting how the push was put in the movies. Also, the idea of Sam battling a Wraith brings into mind the original filmed plan of Aragorn battling Sauron himself in the Battle of the Black Gate in the movies.
The reason why i love this channel more than the other channels ia that the story telling does not put a side the poetic and great story telling of Tolkien. Instead he incorporates them on every episode. Kudos
Outstanding Video!! The Witch-King and Khamul came very close to getting the ring of power from Frodo. This video does a very good job of explaining the Nazgul, and their purpose as Sauron's most powerful servants and what they are capable of. Worth Watching!!
This story deserves it's own book! The depth of this series is on an entirely different level. I'm thankful that Tolkien left such an amazing gift able to keep giving generations later! Awesome video dude!! Comprehensive and informative. I love the fact that no matter how much I think I know about LOTR, there is always something new to learn from you guys that do the really deep dives!!
I always assumed that since Merry was a halfling, ie not a "Man," that he could have killed or wounded the Witch King.....didn't know the blade he used was enchanted....
Not just a halfling. He's also a halfling who hasn't come of age at 33 yet. Therefore, he's still a kid or perhaps teen in hobbit-years, not yet a man. Meantime, in the 1981 radio drama, he never got the enchanted blade because Bombadil got skipped, which led to him stabbing the Witch-king being likened to the bite of a gnat.
Absolutely fantastic! I love all the dates and extra info you give, it really knits all the loose bits of info in the books together. Very well done, have an upvote (too bad I can't give more upvotes)!
Great video again and I learned a lot about the nazgul that I didn’t know. If only we had seen Gandalf fight all 9 ringwraiths, that would have been good to see.
I recently got into Tolkien's work via a buddy of mine. Your vids are really helping me get up to speed fast and get a grasp on the lore. Big thanks from a LotR newbie!
These videos are pretty excellent. Very well done. I'll quibble in the lead up to the Amon Sul event, that the Witch-King didn't so much let Gandalf slip ahead as that he and the other wraiths fled from Gandalf during the daylight hours. "... the drew away from me, for the felt the coming of my anger, and they dared not face it whilst the sun was in the sky. But at night, they closed round, & I was besieged on the hilltop..."
How the Ringwraiths are described: Terrifying spirits, servants of the dark lord How the Ringwraiths act: Monty Python and the Holy Grail esque adventures asking for directions and getting told off by random farmers.
I never comment and I've read and seen seemingly all things lotr. But I must comment. That was amazing! Great editing and narrating. Also all the artist's beautiful works that are featured really add to the video a whole lot (I love that you credit their artworks in the description). The great map animations were terrific too. Well done!
I know this comment is old, but I hope this helps. The names of the art pieces, and artists are in the description of the video. The Eowen ones come from different artists, but if you were captivated by the same art I was, it is by Matt Stewart: Eowyn and the Nazgul.
Same! It's always sat in my mind that it was confirmed to be the Mouth of Sauron, so I am interested to see how i got that notion if it isn't explicitly said. Im sure the passages that talk about this are at the Council of Elrond but I might be mistaken there
I believe it was the Mouth of Sauron because at that point Sauron wanted the Wraiths to remain hidden, and the Dwarves didn't feel fear like a Nazgúl would have made them feel, rather they were just uneasy
“You glimpsed Glorfindel as he appears on the other side , for he is one of the mighty among the first born , and For those who have dwelt in the blessed realm live at once in both worlds and in both the seen and unseen they wield great power “
You rule! Such great detailed content and the visualizations of travels throughout the map are top notch. Learning a lot that I’ve always wondered. Keep having fun reveling in the wonder of Tolkien’s beautiful beautiful world.
I'm constantly impressed by your lack of supposition. Stating plainly that "we don't know" about a certain topic is paradoxically the smartest thing anyone can say! :D
Frodo hadn't left when the black rider questions the gaffer. Frodo overheard them talking. He considered going and questioning the gaffer but thought better (or worse) of it.
Well, he considered saying hi, because the stranger was asking for him. But yeah. You made me go check, and you're right: the gaffer was under the impression Frodo had left that morning and told the Black Rider so, but the gaffer had incorrect information.
I’d love to see a short film about one of the 9, taking a ring, being enamored with the powers it grants, but the slow descent into madness as the horrors of the unseen become visible

Your voice is so clear and clean that even the autotranslation in my language (italian) is perfect. Thank you man this channel is a little gem.
That’s great to hear! And thank you for watching!
In my opinion, the single greatest achievement of any character in the entire series is Eowyn slaying the Witch King! Of course Master Brandybuck deserves a hearty and well earned assist. Brave little hobbit, well done!
Idk, a hobbit fighting off the daughter of Ungoliant seems like a better one. Even though we really don’t know if Shelob actually dies.
I was watching the extended edition of Return of the King last night. Eomir said that Merry would succumb to fear during the battle. Instead he stabs probably the scariest being in the battle in the back of the knee.
@@1shogunate696The books do state that she survived, albeit permanently scarred and unforgettably tested.
Man, I bet you absolutely DESTROYED any presentation or show-and-tell in school
The Hunt for the Ring was my favourite part of Unfinished Tales. Almost felt essential to fully understanding the first book in the Lord of the Rings.
Same here! I was so pumped when the 9 Nazgul came knocking at Saruman's door...
I read that part when only PJ's FOTR had came out in theatre, so it was a bit before all the infos on the 3rd age was available everywhere through games, fan websites/forums, and videos like this one were available
So it hadn't been spoiled for me yet that there were some cool deleted scenes of what the 9 did during the first book when they weren't seen by the fellowship... so all the additional stuff was so exciting, I loved Bree and the spies, like Bill Ferny or the "goblin-man" who was at the Prancing Pony, who was working for Saruman, who was paid by Sauron, etc...
One part of the nazgul travels I wish this video had covered was during the Two Towers, when the 3 groups of orcs have captured Merry and Pippin; Grishnakh had a Nazgul on a fell beast who was following him with a band of 40 orcs
(Ugluk had 80 Uruks, so he outnumbered him, and there were also some orcs from the mines of Moria who had followed them to avenge their dead, that Grishnakh tries to rally to him when they declare that they just wanted to try to catch them, but now that they're away they want to go back to the mines.
I don't recall these Moria orcs being specifically numbered*** *see end of the post for details on that*, but Boromir killed a bunch of them before the Isengard Uruks killed him with their bow)
Ugluk insists that Grishnakh sticks with him until they reach Orthanc, since he suspects him to want to try to bring the hobbits to the Nazgul to bring them to Sauron.
@@randallflagg3700 haha never stop writing essays on TH-cam!
@@AlbertChalmers - Aww, thanks bro ^^
Reminds me of side material in works like Halo and Star Wars Legends. You may not have needed checking up on them, but golly, they really spice up the main works via expanding upon them and explaining the occasional plot holes and noodle incidents.
The Nazgûl have such a cool backstory and have to be some of the most badass villains in cinematic history
This video is nothing short of amazing. Really clear and easy to follow. The Nazgul truely are fascinating and terrible beings.
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it! Plenty more on the way. 😁
Wait, Its only like 2 weeks between Boromirs death and the battle of minas tirith? Seems like an exhausting month.
The reason why i love this channel more than the other channels ia that the story telling does not put a side the poetic and great story telling of Tolkien. Instead he incorporates them on every episode. Kudos
This is SO FREAKING GOOD! Thank you. Happy Holidays!
Thanks so much! Happy Holidays to you as well!
Outstanding Video!! The Witch-King and Khamul came very close to getting the ring of power from Frodo. This video does a very good job of explaining the Nazgul, and their purpose as Sauron's most powerful servants and what they are capable of. Worth Watching!!
Glad you are feeling better , very nice job on the ring wraiths.
Thanks so much!
Tolkien's notes on who is doing what and what they know when are incredible.
I cannot tell you how much I enjoy these. The background music, the research, the art and images. So much care in these videos.
Thanks so much! So glad you are enjoying the channel! There's a new video dropping in just a couple minutes! :)
This story deserves it's own book! The depth of this series is on an entirely different level. I'm thankful that Tolkien left such an amazing gift able to keep giving generations later! It still amazes me that one man could write this. The retelling from this perspective highlights just how beautiful it really is...Well Done!
Tolkien was a Genious of Literature.
Ralph Baskshi's LOTR Series portrayal of the Wraiths is just Spine Chilling. They appear Weak and Crippled, but are Extremely Violent and Destructive.
My goodness, I love how they're depicted in the 1978 LotR movie
The first time I've came across your channel was a couple months ago. Now I'm consuming all of your videos for pure entertainment. I simply can't understand why your channel hasn't at least 2M subscribers. Your quality is incredible and the value you offer is out of this world. I own a TH-cam channel with 100k and I have to say: one year from now, you'll be huge. Good luck!
WOW... this was spectacular and moving!!!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
After having watched countless of your videos, i wanna say that they are marvellous. Art of story telling, fitting voices and great pictures, paired with perfectly fitting music - its absolutely awesome and brings me into middle earth as fast as the movies do
I can't believe I'm only just now discovering you. Your content is amazing, and I've been in complete awe by your dedication to the entirety of the lore of Middle Earth.
I just want to say thank you for sharing all your knowledge about Tolkien's lore. I have learned so much from watching your videos that now I am completely immersed in Middle-earth. Keep up with the excellent content my fellow nerd.
Last time I was this early, Sauron still had the ring.
Not funny
@@petergianakopoulos4926 yeah that was a tragedy that plagued all of middle earth. Too soon, man....too soon

More like last time I was this late, Fingolfin challenged Morgoth to a duel to death.
If only Tolkien could see how much change he has brought to people's lives. Sometimes I feel like all this is true history stuff. The amount of detail is truly outstanding. Maybe in another universe the LOTR universe is real.
You have such a compelling way to present information through both images and sound. I've only watched a handful of your videos, but I'm hooked. The dedication and thoroughness in your work can't go unnoticed. Definitelly subbed.
I can't believe I'm only now finding this channel, subbed!
1:41 wonderful artwork, very beautiful
This was the first NOTR video I watched, and here we are over 3 years later. Amazing seeing how you and the channel have grown. Keep up the great work!
I'm imagining an alternate history where Saruman finds and claims the One Ring and fights a war with Mordor for it, Orcs against Orcs.
I wish there were more “what if?” It would be awesome and nothing would mess with the canon.
That sorta happens in Battle for Middle-earth II, in the Sauron campaign.
Man I clicked this to listen to while working, but theres just too much information packed in every minute. Love this lore m8!
I really like when you reference and compare the movies! It's nice to put things in context when possible for casuals like me!
I don't know what it is about the Ringwraiths specifically, but I keep coming back to this video more than any other. Even more than any Sauron video.
Amazing work as usual! Always impressed by the amount of research and detail that goes into these! Happy Holidays to you and yours!
Thanks for watching! Happy Holidays to you as well!
I love how Farmer Maggot basically just tells the Nazgul to piss off.
It's very interesting to see the enemy's perspective on this
Almost makes you feel bad for the poor Nazgul lol
Right? im here like yo my mans just want a damn ring and its not like they are stealing it they just want it to go back to the original owner. then hearing one was crying all the way back to mordor after one of his bros was killed by a woman. RIP for real.
@@ueehurstonsecurity8887 Lmaooooooooooooo this your comment is funny asf🤣
"I had friends on that Death Star".
I've only been aware of this site for a few weeks, and have watched a dozen or so of your videos. I believe your scholarship to be excellent and complete. This is the best and most satisfying of your posts I have watched. I look forward to catching up.
Been away for a few days and super pleased to come back to this.
Sorry I missed the release NOTR. Xmas is mad but never as mad as the travels of the middle Earthians.
I love how much is going on behind the scenes while Frodo is leaving the Shire.
Awesome video! I love that you used the map of Minas Tirith from Lord of the Rings Online. I played that game a ton and was really happy to see it in one of your videos^^ Love your content, keep it coming ;)
the artwork here of the fight between Eowyn and the witch king is incredible!
Awesome video dude!!
Comprehensive and informative.
I love the fact that no matter how much I think I know about LOTR, there is always something new to learn from you guys that do the really deep dives!!
Watching your videos is such a treat.
I always assumed that since Merry was a halfling, ie not a "Man," that he could have killed or wounded the Witch King.....didn't know the blade he used was enchanted....
And chosen for him by Tom Bombadil.
“I am no man” is I think the most powerful line in the series
These videos are pretty excellent. Very well done. I'll quibble in the lead up to the Amon Sul event, that the Witch-King didn't so much let Gandalf slip ahead as that he and the other wraiths fled from Gandalf during the daylight hours. "... the drew away from me, for the felt the coming of my anger, and they dared not face it whilst the sun was in the sky. But at night, they closed round, & I was besieged on the hilltop..."
This video is amazing! Really love the details you get into, and all of the wonderful art.
Really superb. You give the movements of the enemy without taking away from the books. Wonderful.
How the Ringwraiths are described: Terrifying spirits, servants of the dark lord
How the Ringwraiths act: Monty Python and the Holy Grail esque adventures asking for directions and getting told off by random farmers.
On second thought, let's not go to the Shire. 'Tis a silly place.
Amusing as that is, aside from Farmer Maggot, their aura of fear would aid in getting people to answer them.
Thanks for such an in depth look at this. Really cool that you took the time to put together such a detailed accounting. Very interesting!
I never comment and I've read and seen seemingly all things lotr. But I must comment. That was amazing! Great editing and narrating. Also all the artist's beautiful works that are featured really add to the video a whole lot (I love that you credit their artworks in the description). The great map animations were terrific too. Well done!
Your channel is my new favorite TH-cam channel. Keep up the good work
That art of Eowen and the witch king is really epic.
Where did you find those?
I know this comment is old, but I hope this helps. The names of the art pieces, and artists are in the description of the video. The Eowen ones come from different artists, but if you were captivated by the same art I was, it is by Matt Stewart: Eowyn and the Nazgul.
I'd love a video going in-depth on the Battle of the Pelennor Fields / the siege and defense of Minas Tirith.
8:00 Looking forward to the discussion about who was the messenger who paid visit to the Dwarfs and the men of Dale in 3017.
Honestly, can't get enough of these vids. Superb work again, my man!
This was fantastic!!! Great job!!! Really enjoyed it
farmer: "go away"
nazgul: "damn ok... just wanted to say hi... how rude ill leave..."
Love these. You pick some really amazing artworks. I think that's a huge part of why these are so captivating.
How have I only just found this channel? Love it. Renew my love for this great story.
Love the hobbit and lord of the rings books. I have never explored deeper into Tolkiens work, these videos are amazing
I'm constantly impressed by your lack of supposition. Stating plainly that "we don't know" about a certain topic is paradoxically the smartest thing anyone can say! :D
again new lore, another amazing explanation video, congratz man! :D
hope youre better, to the next one :D
The part about Eowyn and Merry killing the Witch king always makes me teary. Thank you!
Honestly, I think Mr. Tolkien would have loved your videos.
Imagine if Tolkien had a youtube channel.
Though Frodo really was away in the 1981 radio drama.
Hell yeah my favorite TH-camr uploaded again!
You honor me with such high praise as to be your favorite!!
This was a truly epic video. Very well done sir!
I’d love to see a short film about one of the 9, taking a ring, being enamored with the powers it grants, but the slow descent into madness as the horrors of the unseen become visible
Play shadow of war then
I seriously owe it to myself to buy the books and read them because WOW! the movie’s seriously don’t begin to scratch the surface of the books.
The quality of these videos is superb! Thank you so much, discovering your channel has been one of my great pleasures in 2020. Happy holidays, and hope to see more excellent videos next year.
this video and gandalf's complete jounrey were the first of 2021.. fantastic, thanks a lot
