Frank Miller is the master. Frank Miller wrote the book that this movie is based on. He also wrote Batman The Dark Knight Returns. In the span of two years Frank Miller brought back the dark & brooding Batman. Batman The Dark Knight Returns came in 1986 & Batman Year One came out in 1987.

And then an alien parasite got in his brain and made him the worst writer on earth. That's the only explanation for Dark Knight Strikes Again, All Star Batman and Robin, and the emmense racism of Holy Terror.

The comic this is based on Batman: Year One (1987) pretty much re-invented Batman's origin while also exploring James Gordon deeply as a character. DC rebooted their continuity with the Crisis on infinite Earth (1985 to 1986) storyline that streamlined the DC Multiverse into a single Earth. Earth-2's Justice Society of America for example was written into the history of this new mainline universe fighting during WW2 and then being disbanded. These old hero's would then inspire characters like Superman, The Flash who named himself after Jay Garrick Flash, Batman etc.
This reboot also allowed DC to change certain characters origin stories or simply add depth to existing lore. Frank Miller wrote Year One a comic that for the most part stayed true to Batman's iconic origin story as it was already really solid. Miller simply added more depth releasing a comic that followed Bruce throughout his first year as Batman. The comic introduced ideas like Bruce Wayne leaving Gotham to travel the world and train only to return as a masked vigilante figure who over time develops the Batman imagine as an reaction to thugs not being scared of him. The Bat flying through the window is also pulled from this comic along with the Joker card reveal at the end. Pretty much all modern Batman media post 1987 has pulled heavily from Batman Year One so naturally you'll be reminded of certain scenes right away if you've seen the films, animation, and games. Batman Begins (2005) pulled so much from the comic something you picked up throughout.
The film itself is not connected to a certain universe, very much a stand alone. But the comic is apart of Post Crisis DC (1986 to 2011) that ended in 2011 with the Flashpoint reboot that gave birth to the New 52. DC introduced comics like Batman Zero Year which acted as the new origin to Batman but for most people Batman Year One is the definitive origin story.
Frank Miller himself has said that Batman Year One is also canonical to his Dark Knight Returns storyline that featured the older Batman who retired after the death of Robin only to return a decade later. Dark Knight Returns was not set within the mainline DC universe acting as a "What If Story" but Batman Year One can still be seen as the beginning of Dark Knight Returns as well. I guess you could look at it as the beginning of two timelines which branch off from each other.

Barbara Gordon is also the name of his wife. So Barbara got her name from her mom.

Funny thing, helmets or some helmets are supposed to break when coming into contact with immense force. It's so it can disperse the force into the helmet, if it hadn't broken the shock would have gone to their heads. But still, pretty terrifying that Batman can literally clash two guys together with enough force to break 2 helmets when they are meant to take a lot of force.

That 69% Ranking is so disrespectful for one of the most important Batman stories ever.
Batman Begins was obviously based on this.

Probably because it’s a really mid adaptation of the story.
