Just finished my first read through ever… and this lived up to the hype and more. It was hard to imagine it being able to do that beforehand but wow. Frank Miller wrote beautifully and the art was perfect then and now makes my mind harken to the past
The sheer joy in Tiffany's eyes at the concept of Batman getting stabbed by a hooker is just infectious (kinda like whatever diseases must've been on that knife that Batman was stabbed with). :)
When they talk about how everyone talks in fragments and Ethan says, “I’m reading it in Batman’s voice,” and Sal says, “everyone kinda talks like Batman,” I had a huge laugh thinking “Gotham makes a different breed” but honestly it kind of works with Miller. I don’t think he planned that, but it works with this story
It's funny you should say that because the last time I read it my first thought was "wow, this is basically Batman directed by 1970s Martin Scorcese." The interpretation of Gotham especially feels like it's ripped straight out of Taxi Driver or Mean Streets, and the colouring by Richmond Lewis gives it that perfect neon-noir tone Scorcese utilises. I can't help but feel like they had to have been influences on Year One in some way.

I think you missed the full importance of that first Flass scene. I think this comic has been the only superhero comic I've read to broach the topic of police brutality, especially toward African-Americans, during the war on drugs/crime era.

I get what you're saying about the broken dialogue. I always thought as though you were breaking in on a conversation not meant for you, they we do in everyday life, missing pieces of sentences. There's a realism to that I like.
The bit following 53:40 makes me want you guys to do a Back Issues of one of the Batgirl arcs that includes grown-up serial-killer James Jr. Also, really can't wait for their reaction to Gotham Central if you guys ever get to that run.

Another episode, another home run. I really love when you guys(and gal) do Batman stories. Batman is my favorite superhero, and as a character that is always so serious, and taken so seriously by fans, its really fun to see him picked apart and called on all the nonsensical bullshit.

The ending made me realize that during year one at some point Batman stopped red hood and joker was made. Kinda surprised there is no reference in it throughout the entire book.
I actually really enjoy Batman Forever. It's like if the Adam West show (which I also enjoy in small bursts) had a budget. Obviously there are some super cringe worthy moments but overall I have a lot of fun with it.
I think the moments the characters speak in fragments is to insinuate the main character in the scene isn't paying attention to what they're being told so they only hear fragments of a one sided conversation.
Love this episode and this book. I will say the moment about them speaking in weird fragments hits home for me because I do this all the time when doing something physical while talking to someone. 😂
When I first read Year One, I was confused why he had a son when Batgirl was supposed to be his kid. Plus, the boy is never mentioned. Then I read Batgirl Year One and Black Mirror. As it turns out, Barbara is actually his niece or something, who came to live with him when she was young. As for his son, James Junior, he was sent away for a while and he also just disappeared after a while when he got older. James Junior is a psychopathic murder, who absolutely terrifies his family. He even out-crazies Joker in Death of the Family.
Love the shoutout to Mask of the Phantasm! Such a great little movie, and one of the best Batman themes from Shirley Walker. Would you guys ever consider doing a Back Issues on it, or is that off the table since it's not a printed work? Just curious.

My girlfriend ironically got me the Long Halloween yesterday, I already own Year One. Read it, loved it, and I come home to find this back issues haha... I can't wait to read the Long Halloween and then come back and watch the back issues

Few years ago I got my hands on Long halloween part 1 and 2, but the guys who published it messed up and the final 3 issues of Long Halloween continued in a third book I couldn't find anywehere. I also got dark victory and, once again, part 2 is in another figging book I cant find to this day. Amazing episode, this book is one of my all times Batman favorites and the first hardback i ever bought :)
