  • In this episode of composing for the piano we talk about writing in a baroque style. We take the music matters theme and arrange it into a baroque fugue style, discussing music composition techniques and tips when composing for the piano in a baroque style. The melodic line of the theme is modified rhythmically to form the subject of a fugue and we have written a fugal exposition based on it. In this video you will learn hallmarks of Baroque style, and also how to construct the opening section of a fugue using a subject, an answer, a countersubject, and free material. The score is written on the board, we explain how it works, then play the end result. Useful for performers, composers, students and analysts alike.

    Wonderful presentation sir! Was there not a parallel 5th in the penultimate measure with the bottom voices?

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s most kind. There is often academic discussion about whether or not those somewhat concealed 5ths should be allowed or not. Much depends on the voice leading within the texture, which seems to flow well here.

    This is probably not the place to ask this but does anyone know how to write a gavotte? How does the half measure pickup work? Is the half measure pickup an anacrusis?

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A dance often in 2/2 time. Yes the half measure pickup is an anacrusis.
