  • Have you ever had the frustrating experience of hearing a musical idea you want to work with as a player or as a composer but have struggled with being able to write it down? This lesson is an exercise in hearing a melodic line and being able to notate it. The video explains how to go about the task and how to sharpen your aural ability. The approach will liberate musicians wanting to notate ideas and will also make sight reading skills more assured.

That was a great exercise! I was able to write the opening correctly. For the rest I was a third off. Decades ago I used to have to take long bus trips. I would spend my time writing down melodies I came up with. But I haven't done that in years. I'm spoiled by technology now; when I get a musical idea I just pull out my phone and record myself humming it.

I think this channel isn't "underrated;" those of us who are subscribed rate Gareth highly. The channel is just undersubscribed. If we all do our part and spread the word, we can help solve that problem!

I've been trying to work out how to do this for ages. And what you explained is exactly what I do! I thought I was doing it all wrong.

Thanks for another great video Gareth. The results were a bit disappointing, but the discussion of how one might approach analysing the process was very interesting and encouraging.

I have practiced a little bit of melodic dictation before (maybe 3 or 4 notes, or a bar or two), but I think this is the longest segment that I've worked on thus far. That was a lot of fun! And a great tune too!

Dear Gareth, Thanks for your lessons! I've managed to guess the first two bars. But - in the first bar I've written a D flat instead of C sharp on the third note. Could you explain or navigate one of your videos why and when there's a specific writing of sharps/flats ? It would be very helpful. Thanks and greetings from Lithuania!

Sure. We can do that. If you’re in a key like Ab major use Db because it’s a note in that key; if you’re in a key like D major use C# because it’s a note in that key.

Ear training is a skill that (almost) everyone has but hardly any practice! I think for me the hardest part is always being able to focus on both the pitch and rhythm. A few listens always helps but I’d like to be able to do this kind of thing with one or two listens rather than 4 or 5

I was off. My interval recognition is only OK, but I do think I could write that out using a notation program or a keyboard. You can hear when a note isn't quite the same pitch even if the melody is only in your head. We can't all be Mozart.

I actually had some troubles to remember the correct melody at first, because my brain was always filling in the rest of the notes from "Somewhere over the Rainbow" after hearing the first 3 Notes. 😅
