The Circle of Fifths Explained

  • I wish someone would have demystified the circle of fifths earlier for me. For two years I’ve been planning to animate this video and I finally decided that 2021 was the year that to tackle it. You do not have to memorize the circle of fifths to understand it. You do not have to know the circle of fifths to be a good musician. As many others will attest to - the circle of fifths is a tool that makes making musical decisions easier. If you have ay follow p questions please let me know in the comments. I don’t think that the main takeaway here should be: “Now I know music theory”. The goal here is to show you how this jargon filled concept is actually pretty simple and attainable.
The circle of fifths is kind of at the center of music theory and chord progressions in general. As a follow up we will be going over the practical applications of the circle!
In my next video I am going to go over how to use this knowledge in order to find the key of any song. I hope to expand the other practical uses of the circle of fifths from from there.

Honestly accurate! I had this in mind when I made the video. My issue with a lot of youtube content is that it spreads out very little information into a a 14+ min long video. Personally I would rather condense the info into a smaller amount of time and encourage the viewer to watch it again

@@pierceporterfield6327 Pierce, I can't find a place in the video where it would be clarified that two adjacent notes on the circle of fifths are a fifth apart--which is why it is called a circle of fifths.
I understand you don't want to spend long saying little, but consider how much you are really conveying: the intervals between every two consecutive notes in a major scale, a shift along the same note pattern to form the relative minor of that scale, why the "circle of fifths" is called that (did you actually explain this?), and the fact that our reference point on the circle is not the top note (which is what everybody is used to, since you use the clock analogy) but the one corresponding to 11 o'clock. And all this in 6 minutes. The segments that were too fast cognitively the first time around remain so however many times you watch them again. Besides, I didn't even understand the transition to the flats and the left part of the clock. You acknowledge that "the business with flats is confusing," but the subsequent information (e.g., F# = Gb), instead of clarifying, only adds more to be processed and integrated into the preceding material.
Thanks for making the video, of course.

Hey Pierce, I know I’m a year late but I’ve just gotta express my thanks to you.
I’ve been playing guitar for 6 years and in the back of my mind always wanted to get a better grasp of theory.
Back when I was first introduced to the circle of fifths, I was COMPLETELY confused and it sort of drew me out of music for a bit.
About a year ago I’ve come back more enthusiastic than ever, but theory has still been a thorn in my side. Until now!
Man, your videos about chord progressions and tonality have been so incredibly helpful and inspiring to me as an aspiring musician, and I just want to express my thanks to you.
    You’re doing great, man.

Every time I come back looking for magic info on the circle of fifths I finally remember what the magic in it is and I've only seen one video point this out, which I can't find anymore. The closer keys are in the circle of fifths, the easier you can use them in relation to the preceding key without it sounding weird or off. It's basically a useful guide for making interesting music. If you play a C M7 and then a G M7, you'll see what I mean. The 7th note in G major isn't in the same key, but it still sounds good. C is right next to G in the circle. The single note is enough to be interesting without sounding like a fly in your soup. Then try C M7 and D M7, sounds great, 2 note difference and those two notes are in the D M7 chord. You can also play the D M7 with the G M7 and even make them minor for interesting variations. The possibilities are massive. Experimenting with this gives me the feeling I'm playing real music.

The best video on the circle of fifths yet. One accompanying video that would be really truly valuable would be how to relate these major and minor keys to each other, in order to make chord progressions, and even melodies. I'm just messing around looking at the circle and finding that playing a major chord, and then a relative minor chord of the adjacent quadrant, and then a major chord of the next adjacent quadrant sounds pleasing. For example, Eb, Gm, F. Will certainly mess around and experiment, but a follow up video on how to actually use this information to create progressions and melodies would be absolutely invaluable. Thanks so much for this video! Rock on.

I feel like so many other "total beginner" explanations gloss over why it's actually called "5ths" what the relative note means, and it's relation to the scale, where you should count sharps and flats etc. Kudos.

Thanks for the video! I've played by ear my whole life but over the years I keep dipping my toes into music theory... trying to understand the basics first.
This is so cool how you expounded on the major scale pattern and showed the 5ths relation to #'s as you move through... And representing that on the Circle of 5ths. I get it but I don't. I'm still wrapping my head around it. Your explanation is perfect for someone like myself. It will take time to sink in, but I already have a better understanding after watching a few of your vids. SUBSCRIBED!
I guess my biggest blind spot regarding this information, is how it can help me in the bigger picture. I have used the circle of 5ths and deciphered to my own understanding and have found moments where it offered me an interesting path when writing a song, but I'm not sure how it could help or hinder my creative process. I suppose that writing and playing by ear my whole life has been a free and open way for me to explore without feeling boxed in by rules... yet not understanding these patterns and how they all relate has also hindered me in knowing my fretboard better and from being able to explain in musical terms with other musicians just exactly what the hell I'm doing on a song. I digress... thank you for putting this together!

I've noticed when I start a song on a particular note. There are only certain notes that sound 'right' in my progression and melodies. I'll try to stay on the "whole" notes but sometimes sharps or flats work better.

Omg I finally understand this. I wish i could say it was all down to this video but I have watched so many things last couple days. My main point I was stuck was just understanding the whole point of it. I understood the circle of 5ths but I could not wrap my head around the thing as a whole when it comes to actual playing and music.

Hey! This video is amazing. I think there are WAY to few concise (animated) videos which explain a topic nicely. Im allways happy when someone fills this niche a little more and even more if someone does as gracefully as you. I think there could have been one or two things to get even the last few percents out of this visualisation. When comparing scales you could choose different colors (or shapes) and maybe even visually lay them ontop each other. Also at a few places it would have made sense if the scale would have been visually continued. Though I also get that the "main" part of the scale should somewhat differ to show which notes make up the scale. This could have been done two ways, one, you could have highlighted th first note, two, you could have made the note continueing the initial scale a little more pale. And lastly its a little hard to see a pattern when each step sound similar. So I would not say "skip a note" and "don't skip a note" I would say "skip" and "take (the next note)" or something like that. Please let me know if I was unclear.

It's called "The Circle of Fifths" because clearly, anyone trying to understand it and put it into use will...
    1. Watch every video on TH-cam about how to learn and understand it.
    2. Scratch their head in complete confusion.
    3. Watch all the videos again.
    4. Struggle to understand yet again but still REALLY want to learn it.
And finally reach the "Fifth" step...
    5. Buy a "5th" of alcohol and drink the whole thing in hopes that a drunken stupor will help ease the confusion and pain.
Only to start the process all over again (Hence the name the "Circle of Fifth" [Which actually refer to the alcohol])
No wonder most rock stars are alcoholics! It all finally makes sense!!! (Except the circle of fifths part... still)
