  • Wondering what to do with a melody you've written? How could you go about turning it into a piece? In this music composition lesson we start with a melody in a minor key, then work out how best to harmonise it, considering various different ways of presenting the texture, in a more homophonic or more contrapuntal way, and how to go about turning it into a piece in multiple styles. If you would like to know how to harmonise a melody in a minor key, then how to work the results into an interesting texture then this music composition lesson is for you. Having worked out the most successful harmony, does it work best in block chords, or in broken chords, or in imitation? So many possibilities and this music composition lesson opens up a good range of options.

Thank you so much for this! You make this topic so clear to me, someone rather insufficiently trained in music. I'm a poet/playwright currently trying my had at writing a musical theater piece. I want to include a musical number in which two characters are singing different melodies in counterpoint. This tutorial really helped me understand how to create the contrapuntal meter in my lyrics so I eventually can explain what I need to a musical composer-if I can find one! In an earlier comment, Neil Walsh said: "We need composers. That's the modern dilemma". I wholeheartedly agree. The 2017 film "Score: A Film Music Documentary" opened my eyes to that world.

      He's only used....natural minor...Harmonic minor...then the Melodic min..
i'll explain it C MAJOR/A minor ( KEYS are just PITCH)
      There's 9-ea diatonic ( 7 notes) scales. With 7 modes each.
Which will give 63-ea MODES ( 7 note intervals variations within the 12 note)
I personally see modes the same thing as CHORDS.
You just have to get used to playing the 9 different scales together.
MODULATE/substitute or Insert...modes/chords in and out.
The scales actaully makes more sense..when you start stacking chords
over melodies...( it'll give you UNLIMITED OPTIONS)...
These are just the DIATONIC ( 7 note scales)
A Minor PUSHING UP towards it's parallel A MAJOR
      NATURAL min
      Harmonic min ( maj7)
      Melodic min ( maj6, maj7)
      Harmonic min #4 ( #4 Maj7)
      Melodic min #4 ( #4, maj6, Maj7)
      Harmonic min b5
      Melodic min b5
      Harmonic min b2
      Melodic min b2
Th trick is also to know learning it ...PUSHING DOWN
      C MAJOR towards C minor....
The modes and chords will INTERSECT in different WAYS...
hence making it EASIER to modulate
      NOTICE b2, b3, b5, b6 b7 are the ( 5 BLACK KEYS)
That;s why it's EASIER for you learn it in C MAJOR/A min
      ONE KEY at first....
      From C MAJOR.....shift to a BLACK KEY....ONE at a time.
      b6 = Harmonic MAJOR
      b3= melodic min
      b3, b6 = Harmonic min
      b3, b6, b7 = Natural minor
      b2, b3
      b2, b3, b6
      b3,b5
      b3,b5, b6
      b3, #4
      b3, #4, b6
      From F minor....
Example....I could had played F dim ( somewhere in the progress or song)
Notice the #4 or b5....in the scales I listed,
I can play C7......E dim or aug into F any time I want
or this....the VI chord of F Melodic min = D dim
I might had stack the Ab below the D dim...
I also would had apply the (N6) the Harmonic min b2 or Melodic min b2
You can make the b2 ( Gb as Maj7, dominant, aug, dimished)
The Melodic min #4 is AKA Lydian b3 or the IV mode of Harmonic MAJOR
I can also easy modulate from F minor to A Harmonic min or C Harmonic MAJOR to.....C MAJOR/Amin
      F lydian #2 F lydian b3...
      hmmmm...E phrygian b4 ( i'd play the E as dominant or min too.lol)
The II, IV, vi, VII ( 2 ,4, b6, 7) are ALL POSSIBLE FULL DIMINSIHED
it'll overlap in C Harmonic MAJOR and C Harmonic min
AND A harmonic MAJOR and A Harmonic min
      D, F.Ab.B or B, D, F, G#
      AUGMETNED chords are also SYMMETRICAL....
      as in C, E, Ab......or G#, C, E...
hmmmmm...notice the F harmonic or melodic min = Ab AUGMENTED too.lol
idk what eles to tell you....if you learn the 9 parallel scales
      ..everything is all OPTIONAL

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

A is a chord in root position ie the bottom note of the triad is the lowest note of the chord. So Ia in C major is CEG with C in the bass. B means first inversion ie the 3rd of the chord is in the bass. So Ib in C major is CEG with E in the bass. C is second inversion ie 5th in the bass. So Ic in C major is CEG with G in the bass.

    • @GreggOliverBass

I disagree, I think we need to explore the music of today, and bring everyone up to a similar page, make sure we at least all understand it. I mean it's fine having favourites but can we acknowledge that there are some artist out there today that are very talented, intelligent and gifted composers? Because I think there are. Let's not get disrespectful, get creative man.

Hi. This is in response to questions from people about what to do with basic melodic ideas and the idea here is simply to demonstrate some of the many possibilities.

It's trying to show different examples of how you might take a melody and turn it into a piece.
