    The Predator took Billy's skull be cause it was honoring him. It found Billy a worthy opponent. Billy opted to lose his firearms and stand face to face like a warrior. He may have not lasted long as far as we can tell but The Predator found it to be an honorable death so he took his skull as a trophy.

    To this day I don't know why they all laughed at Bill Duke's character when he killed that boar. Killing a huge wild boar with a knife is one of the toughest things I can imagine.

      I feel like it was an ironic joke they were doing, because they taunted him asking if he could have killed something bigger. And it was a big ass boar he took out with ease. I think it was just they were trying to get that Predator and got something else entirely and that kinda took the awe and glory of what would normally be an amazing kill.

      I'm pretty sure the idea was that they started laughing because they thought it was the alien attacking their camp, so it was kind of a relief and they were laughing at how scared they were a moment ago. The reason it is confusing is because of the editing; that one guy's loud infectious laugh just came in unexpectedly and caught us off guard. I think it was a genuine laugh that was used and the director just had to squeeze it in there in the editing room somehow

    Favorite quote from this movie: "You're one ugly..." It's just so versatile :D
    Incidentally, you're right that body heat would show through mud/clay. But do you know what else is about as hot as a human body? A hot jungle (which was an actual problem they had during filming, so they couldn't actually use infrared film and instead recreated those shots with CG). Did you also notice that the POV vision became all washed out in red after taking off the mask? The infrared vision was the predator's natural mode of sight. The mask filtered out ambient heat to make targets show up more clearly. When Dutch was covered in mud, the mask mistook him for being part of the ambient environment and filtered out his heat from the predator's display.
    Honestly, the fallibility of the predator's technology is a huge part of why it's one of my favorite sci-fi monsters. It doesn't have magically perfect invisibility or magically perfect tracking or magically perfect weapons (if you watch it in slow motion, you can see the shoulder canon's blast hit Dutch's gun before deflecting across his arm, which is why it was just bloodied instead of severed). It can be wounded by basic small arms fire, and it actually needs to treat its wounds instead of relying on magical regeneration. The creature feels so much more believable that way.

      Mud can be pretty cold. I had my whole body covered in mud during college hazing, and it was freezing. Pretty sure it lowers my body temp. But depends on the location too, I guess.

      I'm pretty sure there were interviews talking about them trying both have actors stand next to fires and spraying them down with cold water, and neither did enough to actually make them stand out against the environment on the infrared film

      All good points, the Predator isn't perfect , its race has poor eyesight in general (and it has pretty small beady eyes for its size, pretty lame for an apex predator!) , if one takes the first film as the true cannon it only visits the equator of Earth during heat waves. It's tech is impressive but a bit on the clunky side even for the 80s/90s. The Predator is also a bit of a poor sport , this hunt seems to be about ritual and rules but it sure gets human with its spite and hypocrisy when the tables turn.

      I thought Predator was just another typical Schwarzenegger 80s action movie when it first came out and over time realized what a classic this film actually is. It feels way more like a horror film than an action film and has genuinely good acting and the pacing is perfect. I think along with The Terminator, it's arguably the best film Schwarzenegger has been in.

    A couple fun factoids: Kevin Peter Hall (The Predator) also had a cameo (unmasked) as a copter pilot. It took getting to see the monster's face for Peter Cullen (the voice of Optimus Prime) to come up with the vocal sounds for the Predator that resembled soft 'growling'.

    • @MrTech226
      @MrTech226 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Another fun fact is how Kevin Peter Hall gotten the part of Predator? It is revealed that Jean Claude Van Damme (Timecop and Bloodsport) was considered to be Predator, but he was too short for the role because producers wanted someone taller than Arnold. So, at 7'2", KPH was right choice as Predator.

That would be really tough, I commend the actors that are willing to do the full latex prosthetic work.

It depends on a lot of things: how many downvotes your comment gets, how many insulting words are in it ,how many inpropiate words are in it, what your recent history is with shadowbans (a big trackrecord makes it more likely to get shadowbanned again - even for one single p*ssy-word) , etc etc.. The self-destruct function in the Predator's wrist computer is a key part of their lore. A lot of people compare Predators/Yautja to Ninjas, but their mindset is much more akin to Samurai. Samurai code of honor demands that they do not allow themselves to be captured alive, and Predators are the same way, but for different reasons. Their code of honor demands that they must never allow themselves to be taken alive, lest their technology fall into the wrong hands, so they program their wrist computer to self-destruct, which will destroy all evidence of their presence.

    Billy is one tough hombre for whom honor is everything. He cuts himself with his knife to deny the Predator the honor of drawing first blood. Also, many cultures believe that a knife drawn in combat cannot be sheathed unless it has tasted blood. Since Billy can not be sure that he will get a hit on the Predator, he has his knife taste his own blood.

    Lots going on with the scene where they shoot half the jungle down. 1) It's cool in an adolescent gun nerd way Pew-Pew-PEW-LULZ 2) It;s this big release over all the tension building over the thing stalking them ( in future scenes they sometimes have dumbfounded at glimpses of it and don't "spray and pray" , the scene instructs a snapshot glimpse isn't enough it would evade ) 3) It symbolizes all their firepower and skill that was clearly demonstrated in the siege is ineffective. It's a funny scene , it displays power and fun but it implies weakness. It works on so many levels, not a dumb movie.

    Also, did you see what Arnold did at the end of the hand to hand battle with the Predator? He was in that crevasse that had the root crossing it. He cut those spikes a little long so the Predator would see them and go around to the other end where Arnold set the dead fall. Cool.

    I think the reason why Water and Mud worked against the Yautja (Predator) is because they don't have those on their home planet, so it's alien to the actual Alien.
    You can only work with what you know and all they know is a rather hot, dry, harsh environment. That's one of the main reasons they usually do their hunting during the dry spells or in areas less likely to have Rain or Water.

  • @sharkdentures3247
    @sharkdentures3247 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Absolutely correct! Being covered in cold, wet mud would NOT conceal your thermal signature completely!
    It could, perhaps, partially work at least for a few seconds. But the human body just generates WAY too much heat for that to work for ANY length of time. (body heat WOULD quickly bleed through & heat up the mud)
    Good catch.
    That said, it works "good enough" for "Movie Logic" & "Hollywood Science", in order to give the movie's protagonist a Fighting chance against the antagonist.

      Speaking of quotes, I was let down when there wasn't a reaction to the "Stick around." one lol.
      I love the yautja design as well. The Jungle predator in this movie is probably my favorite design. It's got just the right amount of weaponry and gear to take on a squad of highly trained mercenaries after it probably witnessed them bulldoze through those enemy soldiers earlier in the film. When it shows its face at the end and does the roar and extends the mandibles, I was hooked. Stan Winston's work is legendary.

    There is A LOT of lore about the Predator and it's race the Yautja [Y/ow/cha/] Basically anything they do is
    ritualistic and to prove themselves in combat. They are a highly honourable race and usually don't kill young, sick,
    pregnant creatures, or anyone that would be considered an innocent UNLESS they are attacked by them first.
    They also prefer to fight fair, as in 1 on 1 and if the enemy uses weapons then so will they, and they will take a
    trophy (Usually the skull) of something they killed that was a formidable worthy foe.

    Oh! my favourite small detail about Predator comes up around 19:50 You can tell it actually is Arnold doing the fall into the water in the first shot as apparently whenever he wasn't on camera or required to say lines he would smoke cigars. You can see as he falls that there's smoke coming from his mouth so apparently he decided to do that fall while smoking since he didn't have to say anything during it.
    Then as you noticed the shot after definitely isn't Arnold but I find it really funny that he did that fall while smoking for some reason

    It’s been proven that mud does obscure your heat from Thermal vision. But only for roughly twenty minutes. After that your own body heat starts to warm it that it is then visible.
