The thing is Jesse Ventura basically became a military consultant during the filming of Predator, seeing Jesse was a Vietnam veteran and was one of the original frogmen in the Navy Seals, so he was able to pass on a lot of knowledge to make things like the maneuvers in the jungle and patrol formations of the team look more realistic. Not to mention Ventura basically ad libbed all of his lines through the movie seeing he was a charismatic sh!t talker from his pro wrestling days. Also a few of the other cast members were also military servicemen.

The most amazing thing about this movie is the contrast between the first and second half.
The first half is straight 70s/80s-action-movie perfection to build up how insane and well-trained these dudes are.
Then, the minute the second half kicks up, you understand *REAL* quick how irrelevant it all is compared to the true baddie of the film: the Predator.
The directing style and choice is a thing of beauty and I’m always so impressed by how dedicated they were to making this movie exactly what it was meant to be.

Another inside movie knowledge brought to you by me: The helicopter pilot at the end of the movie is the one and only Kevin Peter Hall, the actor who plays the Predator. John McTiernan gave him the brief on-screen role, because his "work as Predator was so exhausting." At 7’2” he had to endure wearing the costume weighing around 200lbs and had to wear a custom made "cool suit" which circulated cold water to keep him cool while wearing the Predator suit in the Jungle. Even with the cool suit he could only wear the Predator suit for about 2 hours before overheating and having to be quickly but carefully extricated from the suit. While working on Harry and the Hendersons, Hall announced that he had contracted HIV from a contaminated blood transfusion, given to him following injuries sustained in a car accident. He died from AIDS-related pneumonia on April 10, 1991 at the age of 35. As always, you’ve made a movie that I’ve watched, more times than I care to admit, so much more enjoyable with your commentary over it. Never thought about getting killed by the nervous fart but your damn right about that now that I think of it. Love it man!!

It’s kinda hard to see, but when the Predator shoots at Arnold, he hits his gun & blows it apart. That’s why Arnold isn’t killed from the blast. It’s like those lucky guys in WWIII that had a bullet hit their weapon, right at the chamber & all the extra metal & wood helps deflect, or stop the round.

    "You're hit, man. You're bleedin'."
"I ain't got time to bleed."
    "Oh... okay."
Fun Fact: Jesse Ventura was delighted to find out from the wardrobe department that his arms were one inch bigger than Arnold Schwarzenegger's. He suggested to Schwarzenegger that they measure arms, with the winner getting a bottle of champagne. Ventura lost, because Schwarzenegger had told the wardrobe department to tell Ventura that his arms were bigger. You're going to have to get up much earlier in the day to get one over a professional practical joker.
Don't Drink It Fact: The Predator's blood - a goopy substance with the color of Mountain Dew - was made on-set using a mixture of the liquid from inside glow sticks and KY Jelly.
Practical Effect Fact: The invisibility cloaking effect was achieved with a bright red suit (because it was the farthest opposite of the green of the jungle and the blue of the sky) the size of the Predator. The red was removed with chroma key techniques, leaving an empty area. The take was then repeated without the actors using a 30% wider lens on the camera. When the two takes were combined optically, the jungle from the second take filled in the empty area. Because the second take was filmed with a wider lens, a vague outline of the alien could be seen with the background scenery bending around its shape.

A+ reaction! My favorite bit of trivia about this movie is something that leads to the end being so damn good: in the original script, Arnold was supposed to beat the Predator in the hand-to-hand fight, but Arnold himself told the director that there's no way any human could win in a situation like that and requested a re-write. That's why Dutch ends up relying on his smarts and adaptability to win instead of just being able to brute force things.

    FYI
At the start of filming the actor who portrayed the PREDATOR was the at the time unknown JEAN CLAUDE VAN DAMME.
JCVD and the director came to terms that their vision of what the predator should be, fast and agile, wasnt working because the suit was far to stiff to move around in as they wanted.
What also contributed to the change was JCVD kept passing out from the suit and the hot climate where they were filming as well as the director felt with the majority of the main cast being at least 6'1 and JCVD being 5'10 the Predator wasnt as intimidating as they wanted it to be. JCVD was then replaced by 7'2 actor Kevin Peter Hall.

Not to protect him, but to protect other people FROM him. I've never heard of shit like that. Or Arnold had some people tell Jessie Ventura that his arms are bigger then bet the man a bottle of champagne on who's arms are bigger. The fact that the Predator is cheating with his "space technology" is spot-on... I've always seen the Predator as a rough allegory for human hunters, who like to pretend they're "sporting" even though they use high-tech shit no prey animal could *ever* understand - the Predator is the same way: even with all its bravado, it is basically a punk out on a weekend safari

    • @CadenceWallace

Cougars use their superior strength and teeth to kill deer, humans use our superior intelligence and tools. The prey needn't understand or deserve a "fair" chance, as such ideas are foreign in the natural world.

    • @xellestar

But when he find someone worthy he ditches all the tech and fights them straight up. Can't imagine any circumstance where a human would do that when hunting!

    • @mckenzie.latham91
      @mckenzie.latham91 ปีที่แล้ว

@@xellestar Yeah but as shown the Predator can do that because it’s bigger, stronger and tougher than most humans
so it still has the advantage
it was essentially playing with Dutch at the end there, if not for Dutch relying on his ingenious traps, he would have been beaten to death.
there is also an intentional irony that for all the fancy high tech stuff on both sides
what defeats the predator in the end is textbook low tech
the Predators are so used to high tech they never suspected or see a deadfall tree being used as a weapon

Aside from playing Hawkins, Shane served as a punch-up writer backing up Jim & John Thomas, the main writers for Predator.
