if it where a bit low i would turn the volume a bit up, but this so very low that i turned the volume all the way up, but i still cannot hear any thing...
I work in the only plant in the world that is currently doing critical CO2 decaffeination (in Texas). This process is remarkable but very expensive/complex to design and implement. Great video and drink on!
That's super cool! Do you know if the Texas plant is still the only one in the world 3 years later? Do you know what brands get your CO2 processed beans?
@ Joost TL, Try a dark roasted coffee, the dark roast means the bean is roasted longer and in the roasting process a certain amount of caffeine is lost, the longer you roast the bean the more caffeine is lost, most people think dark roast means more caffeine but it actually the opposite, darker the roast less caffeine
Love the vid! If you guys could turn up the audio I would appreciate it. With it all the way up It was still a little quiet from by little Bluetooth speaker
For the solvent methods, just evaporate the used solvent and caffeine crystals will be left, and similarly with expanding the supercritical CO2 to a gas.
Interesting Video, thanks :) I switched to decaf 15+ years ago (probably the crazy benzine stuff!) Giving my age away 50+ now I had vivid dreams every night and although I slept, my sleep was very exciting! with many things for my brain to process (Speilberg could not match some of my dreams!) and I never slept properly for 20+ years until someone said: "Have you tried having decaf?" I slept like a log after about 3 to 4 days :) A full caff is still welcome occasionally (driving long distance), but it's not worth drinking it all the time. :)
007Chakochi not many packets do sadly. Hipster coffee places can tell you and big chains should be able to too. Let me know if you discover who uses what!
Another great video.... But another video with sound levels far too low. They always seem to be around half the volume of most other videos. I watch on my phone in a noisy enviroment and have a lot of trouble hearing
I've been noticing this for a while now. How do you not notice the absurdly low volume in your video? I can't hear a thing on my phone speaker with just a fan in the room. Please rectify this. Viewer can reduce the volume if it high, but there is nothing he can do if it is low.
Apparently some or maybe all of these decaffeination methods, not only remove caffeine, but also, a compound responsible for SURFACE TENSION of the coffee which allows the creamer crema to float on the surface. Which of these methods ALLOWS for that?
Some errors in here, small ones. Liquid Co2 is not Super Critical. Liquid co2 acts like a solvent. Co2 as a triple point and a critical point. The triple point is a specific temp and pressure where Co2 could be gas, liquid or solid. Depending on how it is controlled you can easily switch between the phases to manipulate each phases advantages. The critical point is where Gas/Liquid Co2 at the right temp and pressure exists at a state where it inherits the properties of both liquid and gas. At this Supercritical state it flows like gas but has the carrying capacity of a solvent like in its liquid state.
It's strange if dopamine indicates addiction, people also get a dopamine release when they, for example, visit the dentist worried they might get a filling. Are people addicted to going ot the dentist? No, dopamine is more complicated than simply the "addiction neurotransmitter" it's the "remember this" transmitter. It's what marks things as important, whether it's something you love and covet, or something you hate or dread.
Early in the video you ask "who can resist that alluring..." Well, I can, and it's actually not that difficult. The first step is that you have to find coffee disgusting, after that it takes care of itself. :)
I agree. I note that you didn't mention adjusting the volume in the operating system. In Windows, you should pop open the little speaker icon in the taskbar (or "hidden icons" not on the taskbar); and you can make adjustments in Control Panel / Sound. I'm not saying that you should be required to go to that trouble, but if you can't hear, those are additional things you can do.
Some people are sensitive to the effects of coffee and some are not. I can have well over a litre of the stuff on a normal day and sleep fine afterwards and not even really feel a buzz ever.
Non-chemist civilian here. #3 sounded like the most straightforward possible process, in that it just filtered the caffeine away. Why not Game, Set, Match then? You have all the components of coffee except the caffeine, which was filtered. Why not just recombine the rest (old beans with GCE), and you end up with (starting coffee) = (filtered caffeine, off to the side) plus (everything else). Isn't "everything else", umm, "decaffeinated coffee?" Instead, there's this introduction of new beans and osmosis step - why? Even worse, why "over and over?" when it would seem that victory is already achieved, the filtering away of caffeine? Is is that difficult to recombine the GCE and the "old" beans? And if so, then why not just sell the GCE as decaffeinated coffee? Come to think of it, it seems that would be perfect. GCE is not only decaffeinated; it's also liberated from the flavorless, useless "old bean." It's like "extract of coffee." What do you need beans for anyway? Actually this filtering is what I and I suspect most other people thought was done: that somehow the caffeine is filtered, and the remainder is the sold product. Another problem, and which might expose a contradiction above: sprudge.com/green-coffee-extract-is-it-safe-we-have-answers-that-might-shock-you-28915.html says that GCE *contains* caffeine, possibly a lot. That is at odds with the video explanation. Moreover, one would think that a weight loss product (more typically stimulants) would be _caffeinated_ rather than _decaffeinated,_ right?
You really need to mute the click track in the left ear. Some odd noise on that channel in the music is like a wood block click over and over all video long.
Joost TL So sorry your brother had to go through that. That mist have been very difficult for your family. My grandmother has a severe caffeine sensitivity as well, so I do understand why people drink it. I just personally dislike decaf and like to make jokes to that effect. :)
Please increase your volume levels. My iPad volume is all the way up, and you only sound like a normal listening level. Edit: I see this has already been addressed.
So...water isn't a solvent? I mean, perhaps it isn't a selective caffeine solvent, but it sure seems to be acting as a solvent (something which dissolves other substances). Same question for CO2...
Tea has cafeen, too... Some of us cannot tolerate caffeine. I get migranes from ingesting caffeine. Having decaf coffee is the only way I can enjoy it.
these videos are getting quieter and quieter, in 2 weeks we won't be able to hear anything
oreskec they're decaf videos
mkostrub bravo 👏
And yer, sorry about this, #exportfail
Gotta check that 'normalize' box.
They probably used the usual -23 LUFS normalisation usual in TV productions while TH-cam is aiming for ~13 LUFS.
Audio on this was a bit low, Greg.
a bit? i wouldn't be surprised if it was 20db or more from baseline
if it where a bit low i would turn the volume a bit up, but this so very low that i turned the volume all the way up, but i still cannot hear any thing...
Yer sorry I need to go clean out the editor’s ears / sort out the export glitch
I work in the only plant in the world that is currently doing critical CO2 decaffeination (in Texas). This process is remarkable but very expensive/complex to design and implement. Great video and drink on!
Great, using complex and expensive scientific processes to make something useless: decaf coffee >_
fenrirgg if there’s money and demand, there’s supply
That's super cool! Do you know if the Texas plant is still the only one in the world 3 years later? Do you know what brands get your CO2 processed beans?
@@irisgo6448 illy
Brilliant video and presentation, very likeable character and easy to understand explanation. Thank you!
Why aren't we using the leftover caffeine to make extracaffeinated coffee? I would buy that.
You can get it in instant form. I once had Rocket Fuel when I was in the UK. That stuff is savage.
I would like to find 'less' caffeinated coffee. for just the right high.
Probably being used for energy drinks and caffeine pills.
Firmus
Get a pre-workout supplement. Whooosh 😁

someone needs to boost the audio on these videos, i can't hear a thing at the start?
I think the real question is how do we get the coffee out of the caffine.
now we're asking the real questions
that last method probably leaves lots of pure caffeine as a biproduct
For the solvent methods, just evaporate the used solvent and caffeine crystals will be left, and similarly with expanding the supercritical CO2 to a gas.
@@TheCoulman The question the government doesn't want us to ask!
Doesn't anyone watch the videos before posting? Audio is way low.
very good -without background noise !!!
clear and detail excellent explanation,
Coffee only drags me to the world of explosive diarrhea
hahaha just build a toilet seat Next to your bed and the problem solved😉😂😂😂

Niceee I think the same everybody on my work is dependent on their caffeine shot lol
So the question is how do a consumer know which way the beans were decaffeinated?
Does the packet contain that information?
007Chakochi not many packets do sadly. Hipster coffee places can tell you and big chains should be able to too. Let me know if you discover who uses what!
Any particular reason why you haven't drunk caffeine for the last year's Greg?
Well said chap!
Great vid Greg - what's your favourite Nespresso compatible decaf pod? The various makers don't seem to make apparent which methodology they use ....
You have had caffeinated coffee. Decaf still has caffeine in it dufus.
Nespresso cups has 2 mg per cup lol its almost nothing

This was genuinely interesting. Great work.
fez Cheers! (Do you cheers a coffee??)
audio is way too quiet compared to most other videos.
7:20 wasn't all that before using Science?
Love your presentation! I actually learned a lot

Interesting video, however dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) is a different substance to ethylene chloride (C2H4Cl2).
This videos are amazing, love them.
What kind of sacrilege is this?! Why not also strip out alcohol out of alcohol and cocaine out of coke while we're at it?
As useless as non alcoholic beer.
Life without this lovely brown bean water wouldn’t be the same. I’m glad decaf doesn’t give us cancer
Audio levels are all over the place and mostly way too low.
Great one this one, like the slightly longer ones
JackPott554 cheers Jack, great to hear. I like the longer ones too as I can get my teeth stuck into the topic a bit more
You need to sort out the audio.....
WHICH BRANDS of decaf use the CO2 method of decaffeination?
I always love the videos with Greg. Such a good presenter.
By the way, who is responsible for the "comments" within the videos? :)
blocki that’ll be our editor. The cheeky [redacted]. I love him really. And thanks for the nice words! 😊
I have several decafs a day with sweetener. It's my placebo for a dessert:)
Do u get addicted to it??
Why the added clock tick sound effect?

*In my country we add Cardamom to Coffee for eliminate caffeine .We have been doing this for centuries*

Please adjust your mic gain on your future videos. I had my volume maxed out in youtube, PC, and speakers and I could still barely hear your audio.

Very enlightening, thank you for sharing!
Oh shietttt, FINALLY, THE RO... THE GREG HAS COME BACK... home.
When he said I'll take you through the 4 methods I couldn't help but check how long the video is.
Some people are sensitive to the effects of coffee and some are not. I can have well over a litre of the stuff on a normal day and sleep fine afterwards and not even really feel a buzz ever.
audio too soft
Too me, decaf tastes nothing like regular coffee. To me it has a sour taste

I was only aware of the carbon dioxide method. And from the way all sorts of solvents used , I think CO2 method is the cleanest
It is a fine question indeed, to ask yourself how decaff-coffee is made.
But a far more puzzling one is, Why?!
I'm a tea drinker myself. I only drink coffee when I want/need the stimulation. Decaff is utterly perverse to me.
most teas are caffeinated too
For next episode try explaning how they make the cherry on a cake. Ill promise you never eat them again.
Really nice video, but at 4:06 you have a small mistake - Dichloromethane is Methylene Chloride, not Ethylene Chloride.
Peleg Bar Sapir well spotted! 10 points 😉
Greg Foot I blame my MSc in Chemistry 😋
Get whole bean decaf where ever you can no matter the process.
Nice👍👍
Coffee gives me headaches
You really need to mute the click track in the left ear. Some odd noise on that channel in the music is like a wood block click over and over all video long.
I can’t have anything with caffeine in it, it makes me so anxious and I feel wired and after that I have a massive comedown
But the real question is WHY. WHY get the caffeine out of coffee? #deathbeforedecaf
USApatriot30 my brother couldn't drink caffeine anymore after his cancer. he got much more sensitive to the drug sadly.
i think that counts as a #decafbeforedeath
Joost TL So sorry your brother had to go through that. That mist have been very difficult for your family. My grandmother has a severe caffeine sensitivity as well, so I do understand why people drink it. I just personally dislike decaf and like to make jokes to that effect. :)
To be able to sleep and not become addicted.
Arc Kocsog Sleep is for the weak!
Just what we need: yet more processed food.
Caffeine gives coffee its characteristic taste!
Who is he wearing his watch
If the flavor is in that brown water why put it back in the beans? Why not just sell it as a decaf coffee concentrate and people can add it to water.
Mildly carcinogenic, sounds pleasant.
1:58 Caffeine is less than 10 angstroms long. Many other biological molecules are larger.
So who else is a decaffer like me?
Btw “decaffer” isn’t an official term. What is the collective noun for a bunch of decaf drinkers?
Normies
Dorupero lol
Not even "normies" are that boring.
I am sadly, I used to drink 4-5 cups a day, until I developed an intolerance after a course of antibiotics. 😑
Greg do you use organic decaf? What's the best tasting, least expensive brand to go with?
caffeine a big molecule. not compared to oils and tanins, it more the size of small sugars
Dont drink coffee if you are sensitive to caffine...
Time to fire the sound guy and hire one who can hear.
I'm addicted to tea
I drink decaf coffee and green tea
John James you know green tea has caffeine in it right? 🤔
Greg Foot mine is decaf tea
John James oh nice yer I have decaf green tea too 🍵
Huh. I always assumed it was just GMO beans that didn't produce caffeine to begin with. The more you know, I guess.
That would probably be cheaper, but not allowed in the EU and Britain.
Please increase your volume levels. My iPad volume is all the way up, and you only sound like a normal listening level.
Edit: I see this has already been addressed.
Dichloromethane is also called Methylene Chloride not Ethylene Chloride...
thought someone was banging pots together outside, but it was you backgroundmusic
So...water isn't a solvent? I mean, perhaps it isn't a selective caffeine solvent, but it sure seems to be acting as a solvent (something which dissolves other substances).
Same question for CO2...
The question should be "WHY"
R CLN I love caffeine but I get palpitations so I’ve had to go down that decaf road. That’s why.
I’ll miss that caffeine zing !
whats the point ?
Say coffee one more time, I dare you, I do let dare you.
Thanks for the informational video, was interesting.
👍
5:01- 5:05 😂
But sir, DCM isn't "ethylene chloride", it's "Methylene chloride" actually...
If you're sensitive to caffeine just drink the damn tea
Tea has cafeen, too... Some of us cannot tolerate caffeine. I get migranes from ingesting caffeine. Having decaf coffee is the only way I can enjoy it.
More to the point what is the penalty for taking caffeine out of coffee
Ralph Reagan i guess the lack of caffeine could be seen as a penalty in some uses cases :p
The question isn’t “how?”. It’s “why?!”
ShitAbysss lol a few people are distraught over the concept of decaf 😝
*Caffeine =stress, anxiety,insomnia*
avoided Decaf for ages because i thought it tasted shit... its not great but surprisingly better or same than most of the instant ones.
How about breeding and growing caffeine free coffee beans
After watching this I realized that decaf isn’t worth it
The better question is why would you take the caffeine out of coffee.
Becuase some of us cannot tolerate caffeine. I get migranes from ingesting caffeine. Having decaf coffee is the only way I can enjoy it.
Then why not bottle and sell this drinkable flavour, oil rich GCE solution as a replacement to coffee? Isnt this a brilliant shortcut?
I stopped drinking coffee in the 90's, didn't like how it treated my body
drinking decaf coffee is a sign of weakness, and weakness disgusts me
Some of us cannot tolerate caffeine. I get migranes from ingesting caffeine. Having decaf coffee is the only way I can enjoy it.
“Instead of benzene, they used an organic solvent...” sigh
What the hell is that tapping noise in the background, it's driving me bonkers.
The Varzoth it’s music
BBC. USDA. I don’t get it.
You need to consume caffeine Greg lad as it has innumerable health benefits unless of course you are a caffeine teddy bear XD
Not "how?", but "WHY?".
