Totally feel the same way every summer. I spent just laying around watching TV, going outside and hanging out. My daughter just entered college and her summer is spent working as an EMT 12 to 14 hour shifts plus exams. She literally doesn't have time to sleep... I think kids in the '70s, '80s and '90s were much happier than they are today.

Agreed. Grew up in the 90's and things were a lot more chill. I'm all for expanding your mind and skillset, but what kids are going through today is the same hustle culture that's led to the abusive work culture we have in the U.S.

Count the smiles. Any time anyone claims to have a better way of doing things, just count the smiles. If there ain't no smiles, it's not a better way. We spent a lot of time smiling back in the dinosaur days before the turn of the century.

Secrets from an admissions counselor at a top college: none of those things (except for scores + AP classes) really matter much. The extra activities speak more to involved parents and financial resources than they do the student. I’d take a kid with a real passion and interests over one who’s overly-involved any day.

    • @corrindickerson7368

Yes! Always trying to tell teens 3 AP classes should be the max. Why would you want so many college credits ? To graduate early to…start working earlier? For what?

@@loridurand400I disagree with your advice a bit. Just want to share another perspective.
I took every AP class that was offered. I also went to community college. Then, at university, I really only had to take like three hard classes and everything else was fun electives. I was also able to get a BS and a masters in four years of university.
I saved a lot of money and had a great time.
AP classes are really helpful if you are using them as a money and time saving tool.
They’re not helpful if they’re stressing you out , your family is rich anyway, or you have no interest in grad school.

It's sad that kids can't be kids anymore. I was a teenager in the 70's. My kids were teenagers in the 90's. My husband and I made certain they could simply be kids. We limited planned activities. I was working full time at 16 and paying rent and helping with bills. I did NOT want my kids to be adults before they were actually adults.
My daughter got into HVAC without having to pay for school.
My non-bio son decided to go into the Air National Guard to get funding for education.
And my youngest, nearly 15 year old son is doing things for neighbors to make money so he can buy himself an Xbox series X. And then save for a car. He wants to be a cop and work his way up to detective. So, the only thing he’s got going on is the cadet program with our local PD. It’ll help him get money and credits for the academy. Totally agree Kim. My teen is taking it easy this summer, the year before 12th grade. I already approved her taking a gap year just to work and volunteer. We already told her don't bother with AP courses. She will go to college once she knows exactly what she wants to study. She may take longer to catch up early in her career but I have no doubt it will even out a few years into working life. As all those kids who went at things too hard drop out of the workforce to take time to "find themselves." The way to stop the rat race is to get off the track.

Taking AP classes wasn't harder than regular classes in my opinion. All you had to do was take a test and you got college credits. It made things easier once you got to college. He thought school was boring so this kept him engaged.

Surprised you didn't mention how short Summer break has gotten for kids currently. The county where I reside in Indiana has several school districts and depending on which one you live in summer break is 8 weeks or 10 weeks. We have two school districts starting July 31 this year and the rest start August 7. For most of the '80's my wife and I got out of school the Friday before Memorial Day and didn't go back until the Tuesday or Wednesday after Labor Day, 12 or 13 weeks for summer. In the '90's for high school and college it did start to vary but summer break never dipped below 11 weeks off.

I kick my kids out of the house every day at 10 am. That's when I get back from the gym and shut off the TV. They ride their bikes 2 1/2 miles to the pool which opens at 11 am. If they forgot to pack a lunch, I might drop off a PB&J while I'm out running errands. The lifeguards take a break from 2-2:30, so the kids play at the park or lay out on the grass for a bit. Pool closes at 5 and everyone bikes home, or if I'm in the area, I'll pick them up. My two teens work part time at the local diner and use their tips to buy ice cream cones from the coffee shop that's next to the park, for themselves and sometimes for a little sibling. While they are gone, I clean the house, catch up on laundry and dishes, and think blissful, uninterrupted thoughts. It's a good life here in the summer and we all love it 😁

We don’t need to do any of this in Australia aside from good grades. The better the grades/marks in final tests, the better course and uni. No extra curriculars or applications no internships needed. You just put in your top choices and wait for the offers. Short of if you wanted a scholarship, don’t need any of it. But we have an automatic govt loan for uni that you only have to pay back once you start earning a certain about after graduation.

I was a teenager in the 90s (born in 80) but my dad was super strict and had a hard work ethic which he inflicted on me so I never had an empty summer as a teen. The summer right before middle school I was a full blown nanny to a toddler and small child dawn to sometimes 10pm ( illegal now I know). In summer when I was about 18 I had 3 jobs simultaneously and while moving (one was an internship)…he also never accepted anything less than an A+ from me and often volunteered me community projects alongside whatever else I had going on…long story short…I can relate to what kids today are going through…it’s rough though. ❤
