Thank you so much for this video. I have had dachshunds all of my adult life. My current 6 yo , Greta, has had 4 IVDD surgeries at University of Georgia Vet School. These surgeries occurred in less than 2 years.. So she has 8 discs T 10 thru L4 surgically addressed. Greta is a bubble dog, because we have no stairs, ramps only, use strollers, and harnesses.. Our neurology vet is wonderful, but he is finishing his 3rd year residency and wants to return to Texas A&M to pursue teaching. I hope Greta will be okay without her favorite doggy Doctor..

I watched this live yesterday. Very interesting and helpful webinar. My dog had surgery for IVDD almost a year ago at AMC and I still learned more from this presentation. Jelly donuts!
Request: AMC rehab staff and/or neurological vet do a presentation about post op, which was discussed briefly last night. Pain management, acupuncture, laser therapy, hydrotherapy, walking, supplements, expectations for the first week post-op, the first month, 4 months. Risk of Anesthesia worsening IVDD - What to do about future dental cleanings. Future IVDD flares - when to bring the dog in for examination. I could go on and on. Hope you will consider it.

My 16 yr old dachshund has always had a limp/hop in his back limbs. Now, he’s older and he does a drag/hop…he drags his back limbs a few steps, then hops. His front limbs are shaky and his tail twitches constantly.
He has good days and bad days.
A few weeks ago, he got shocked by a electric cord and he ran across the house like he was young again 😢
His problems worsened after dental surgery and anesthesia. He started having problems with his balance-after 4 different vets and me insisting he had an ear infection, they discovered a deep inner ear bacterial infection, that required 3 antibiotics and an ear flush, to remove excess wax and mucus from his inner ear!
He’s better, but he’s not the same since that dental surgery!

I wish our vet told us how strict the REST and treatment was for a slipped disc in a dog i had no idea how bad it could get, had no idea i could loss myDog. had no idea it was a disc in the spine i always thought it was a hip disc when told a human had a slipped disc.
One thing iv noticed about most vets iv taken my animals to here in NZ is they are so la de da and dont give enough information to people about their animals visit, like a human doctor would.
thank you for this video wish i knew this information sooner i couldve done more for myDog. 💚

My last Cardigan Corgi had IVDD diagnosed at 5 years of age, passing away at 9 yrs. My current Cardi, aged five and a half years old, was just diagnosed with IVDD 😢. I have a great vet, from WSU, who is helping us through this process.

Thanks so much for this presentation. It has really helped enlighten me on what I am facing with my dog right now. There was so much useful insight into the cause but more importantly it has answered a lot of unanswered questions in a clear and easy to understand manner. I am so grateful 🙏

Absolutely top notch presentation going through this right now with our 4yo Chinese Crested dog. Possibly having surgery in a few days as this is her second occurrence (the first she recovered with just rest and pain relief) - Thanks so much!

Our 15 year old Dachshund has this. Eliminate stairs for him. No jumping on or off furniture etc. Have a good relationship with your veterinarian because you’ll need meds to keep the dog comfortable when this happens. My dog has had many flares. We don’t crate him but confine him to a small space while he recovers. We go outside with him to encourage his poops because sometimes he hurts too bad to go. Puppy pads work too if they hold it. Gabapentin 100mg is one of the meds that is used along with others when he has back pain. Galliprant I think is another one, 1/4 pill. This has gone on for many years. They can live normally with this if they’re pampered. You learn what to do over time. I’m just throwing out some stuff that helped us. He hasn’t been down in his back for a year or so now. He walks in a leash. He’s old so he does a lot but he’s very happy even at 15.

Did your dog always stayed at the lower grades of IVDD? My beagle had 3 episodes of stage 1 and she is only 7 years old. Wondering if this will progress or there is a chance it will stay at manageable level?

@@irinanikiforova6976 Our dog is 15 now and he’s always been fine after the “flare up”. He walks normally and enjoys his life. He’s really old now and sleeps a lot. My husband walks him around maybe 10 minutes a day..other than that he sleeps or goes outside when we do in our back yard. He’s had a great life and I believe it can be managed with pain meds to keep him comfortable. The only med we give daily is Gabapentin. We have been prescribed others and we have them here, but we feel this is all he needs. If for some reason he gets down in his back and looks to be in pain I’ll give him the other pill which I think is GALLIPRANT. 1/4 because he weighs just 25 lbs. Yes they can live a long time without problems if they don’t get on furniture or stairs etc. We’re so careful with his activities as to not aggravate his back. I am noticing him stumbling now on occasion but he’s very old and his back is probably worn out. He’s still happy though so until he’s in pain and needs surgery we won’t put him to sleep. I won’t do surgery at his age. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much for this video. I have a Rottie/Doberman mix that started having some difficulty walking.
I cannot afford an MRI or surgery, but I now know what steps I can take to help her navigate this.
I've been very concerned about her going up and down the steps so, tomorrow I will move my bed downstairs to the living room floor.
I'll also build her a ramp to get outside to potty and stretch her legs.
Strict rest for the next six weeks!
And I'm ordering her a quad wheelchair that will help support her weight and spine (belly strap) for when we start back walking.
    Thank you again.

Try crate rest for 8 weeks and CBD in larger dose strength first two weeks one foot of leash per week, my miniature dachshund has been running around for 3 years after. He couldn't move his back legs and would drag them for about a week until improvement was seen. CBD treats daily since and no issues.

Depends on the severity. Strict crate rest can allow less severe cases to heal naturally.

Try red light therapy, much cheaper. I get pet light therapy five treatments at $400 and they really get better.

Very informative webinar…my 3 1/2yr old mini doxie is currently on strict forced cage rest. it was extremely confusing when her symptoms were just starting out. Like doc mentions, it is one of those conditions that can be easily misdiagnosed.
My rosita🐶 has been making steady progress she is on her 2nd week of rest. however she is still on meds. I know its still alot of weeks to go but, does anyone know the most “appropriate “ time to start hydrotherapy or physiotherapy? during the end of crate rest or midway through it?
