IVDD in Dogs: JP's Story - from paralysis to walking

  • JP’s hind legs became paralysed in November 2017 due to intervertebral disc disease. It is very important to start physical rehabilitation/therapy as soon as possible after the onset of paralysis/weakness or spinal surgery. We started to treat JP’s condition conservatively using physical rehabilitation, acupuncture and laser. The first 6 weeks following paralysis or hind leg weakness is the most crucial time to start neurological rehabilitation, as the spinal cord has the ability to regenerate.
    8 weeks later, JP started to take some steps by himself. Check out the video of his progress. Thank you very much to Trevor Rebello for the use of his song, “For Me”.
    Please visit our website for more information about intervertebral disc disease and the different therapies used to treat this condition.

    My long-haired all black dachshund, Toby, had his 2nd back injury 9 days ago. This time it paralyzed him and he couldn't move his hind legs at all. I can't afford surgery so my vet put him on Prednisone. After about five days on that he started to be able to stand and take a few steps! Even now just barely over a week, he's almost walking normal again. Just still a little wobbly. I'm amazed at how quickly he's making progress. I'm hoping after the two week mark he'll gain full control again. I'm very thankful that he is doing this good so soon without surgery or any expensive treatments.

      We are so glad to hear that Toby is doing better and we wish him a good recovery. If you can, it would be helpful to get acupuncture and/or laser therapy and/or physiotherapy started to ensure the best recovery and the long term health of Toby's spine.

      hi I know you wrote this a year ago but how is your dog doing? We have an all black dachscund as well and he was just diagnosed with IVDD this week as well sadly :( he is not even 6 years old yet. He has stage 4 for sure where basically he cannot move his legs anymore but still have some sensation left. It's the third day now, it's been very difficult caring for him, esspecially when it comes to potty. But today a miracle happened as he when he goes to pee he drags himself and pees (his hind legs are paralyzed) but out of no where for 1-2 seconds he stood on his back legs and peed then fell over. Im not embarrassed to admit it made me cry and I hope he can return to a normal life. He is basically a family member of this house and provided so much life and energy to it. We cant afford surgery as the vet said it would cost nearly 10,000 dollars... but we in no way will put him down.

    • @KillSchwill
      @KillSchwill ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RuskiVodkaaaa I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. Mine is actually doing great. It's been over a year and a half and he basically seems like nothing ever happened to him. I still try my best to make sure he doesn't jump on or off anything, which is hard to catch him everytime. And there have been a couple scares when he jumps off the back of the couch to the floor. But so far he's been okay thankfully.
      After his injury, when he stopped hurting, I would massage his back and gently stretch his legs and back. And yeah after like 3-4 weeks doing that while on Prednisone, he was fully healed and back to normal. And since yours is already making some progress, it sounds like he could be on route to making close to a full recovery. I wish him well ❤️‍🩹

      During lockdown my dog was paralyzed and vet in our city first said thick bit is the reason and gave medicine and my dog walked again. After 5 days again my dog paralyzed and another vet said IVDD but because of lockdown we couldn’t take him another city where there is hospital for 1 month. After 1 month immediately we took him and they did surgery and removed the disc.
      Doctor said my dog is grade 4. This is 26 days after operation he is at home. As he lost 1.5 kg out 6.6 now he is 5.1kg. I do rehabilitations for him and we give him all medicine necessary. Newly He can stand by support but one leg is weaker than the other. He gets up but can’t control and fall. I really want do whatever I can. My 11 yo Pekingese-Maltese-poodle mutt lost the strength in his legs 1 week ago. The vet says IVD bulging / herniation. He originally was very weak in the hind legs and was unable to consistently place the left rear paw correctly on the ground, like a human foot drop, so he would place the paw top side down and try to stand like that. The foot was bent under him. I will disagree with your slide stating that if you see this sign it means nerves will not regenerate. You are mistakenly taking hope from people although you obviously have wonderful intentions. As a chiropractic orthopedist I can tell you a sign like this can be temporary. In one week he clearly has more strength in the dorsiflexors of his paw because he is bringing the paw up as he swings the leg forward which he could not do previously. It will be a long recovery. Thank you for your information as this is truly sad when it happens to both the dog and his owners.

    My dog was almost paralyzed in his hind legs 2 weeks ago, took him to the hospital and the neurologist recommended immediate surgery, he was diagnosed with IVDD intervertebral disc disease, surgery took two hours, a day after surgery, the surgeon said there's a 95% chance of him walking, he was peeing by himself, considering he'd lost deep pain sensation before surgery.
    Its 2 weeks post op, he's on a strict crate rest, i take him out for short potty breaks, using a leash with harness, he walks by himself without assisting him with a sling.
    He starts physical therapy this week, my only challenge is that now that he's a bit better, he's very restless in his play pen, i hate to sedate him, he has lots of chewy bones, kings, and a ton of stuffed animals, but he has a lot of energy and wants to come out, any suggestions anybody, thank you

    My sweet 8 year old chihuahua is struggling very much like this sweet baby. We are trying for a conservative approach since surgery is out of our budget. Currently doing lots of rest, anti inflammatory meds, pain meds, and steroids. Is there anything I should specifically ask my vet about? What kind of veterinary offices do acupuncture and physical therapy? We are so in love with our sweet boy 🐕 and are willing to put in the work to help him have the best life possible. Thanks for any advice!

      @almakerr7  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, it is really important to start physio/rehab as soon as possible. The first 6 weeks after any spinal cord injury or trauma is the most crucial time to start neurological rehabilitation, as the spinal cord has the ability to be able to regenerate. This is called neural plasticity.

Please remember that during the cage rest it is very important to be doing physio exercises as often as possible every day. Now, he is still not able to stand himself but whenever we pinch his toes(back), he throws back his legs just like trying to stop us from doing that. Is that a good sign to recovery? Veterinary chiropractic can be used as part of the treatment for IVDD. There is also great benefit from doing physio/rehab exercises at home. The secret to success is doing small amounts as often as possible every day. Try to concentrate on standing exercises and sensory work to the hind legs. It is also important to try to maintain and improve the muscle strength in the hind legs.

There are many physio/rehab exercises that an owner can do at home to help their dog.
