When patients realize what degenerative disc disease actually is, they are often surprised because frequently, the word "disease" in their diagnosis is misleading and drives them to think it is something they've caught somewhere or a systemic disease that requires medication to be resolved.
However, degenerative disc disease is not something you catch and systemically affects your body. It is something that affects the disc of your spine, causing these to degenerate.
Discs are simply put, the cushioning between each vertebra. They allow spacing so the nerves can come out and help facilitate spinal flexibility. Since the spine is a continuous bone structure that extends from your neck to your pelvis, its main function is to allow movement, which will depend on how healthy your discs are. Discs act as shock absorbers as well, helping distribute mechanical stress along the body.
Degenerative disc disease happens when the spine loses its normal alignment. Scoliosis, injuries, or something else that might have occurred can cause the spine to lose alignment; also, the effect on the spine of gravity over time causes the spine to degenerate faster in the area of the misalignment.
The older the patient, the more likely they are to have degenerative disc disease because of the effects of gravity over time.
If the terminology "disease" was taken to heart, then every single disc of the spine would be affected the same, but that is not what happens. With degenerative disc disease, it is only one or two areas and some of the adjacent discs that are affected, not the entire spine. So, the area of the spine most affected by the misalignment will go through a more rapid degeneration, which is what we call degenerative disc disease.
The correct terminology for what happens should be a misalignment of the spine, and the degeneration that happens is only a symptom of said misalignment.
Many repetitive processes can cause spinal misalignment:
    Carrying weights wrong
    Sedentary lifestyles
    Chronic poor posture
    Incorrectly lifting objects
    Incorrect sitting position
The first sign of disc deterioration is the loss of flexibility in the spine. The most common one is often the spine's low back or lumbar area. As the degeneration grows, it leads to generalized back pain or localized pain in the area of the disc deterioration. And it can extend even further and start to cause radicular issues, and the pain will radiate and extend to the neck, head, arms, and legs. It can even cause sciatica.
To help your disc disease, the first thing to do is to restore the normal alignment of the spine and allow the discs to have the flexibility to heal on their own.
As patients get older, the discs no longer have a blood supply, and it is difficult to see a regeneration of discs. A proactive approach to treatment is the most important thing to do for disc degeneration in adults.
If you have been diagnosed with this, by improving the alignment of your spine, you can improve the flexibility and motion of the spine, and you can stop the symptoms of degenerative disc disease.
Treating the cause of your disc degeneration is the most important, and that is what we focus on at the Scoliosis Reduction Center, restoring alignment to improve flexibility on the spine and allow the body to heal as it was meant to.

I was diagnosed 10 years ago and I asked my doctor if it would get better. She said no. But she did say PT does help. I recently started going to a chiro and she has helped me IMMENSELY. I also do at home (myself) PT for DDD and that has helped IMMENSELY. I do have to take gabapentin for my RLS, and that does help along with proper sleeping positions. I now sleep on a very cushiony pillow that helps with my neck, two pillows to rest my arms and a larger queen pillow positioned at the knees. Sometimes when I'm in pain, I get angry because I exercised all my life and took great care of my health and this happened. I wish every one to fine relief that works for you as an individual because there is no one fix that fits all. God bless!🙏

I totally reversed my DDD accidentally after a year of estrogen replacement at menopause. One year on conjugated equine estrogen did regenerate my discs. I shout it from the rooftops to all menopausal women I know. I am on a tiny dose. My bone scan was amazing after 1 year and I have no pain. ZERO.

I listened to John Bergman speak on this a few years back. As a massage therapist, I've told many clients this info becausek, with the name " disease ", people think it is something they have to live with instead of correcting it. Thank you for a very good video.

There is so many ways and suggestions regarding degenerative disc disease. With a little deductive reasoning and concluded my back was not designed for lugging around a heavy head all my life. I squenched my weeney ass spine! I bought a inversion table from Walmart web site, and la la it has allowed me to live my life with little or no pain most of the time at least for now!

when I was 20 years old I got diagnosed with DDD, bulging disks, scoliosis, sciatic nerve, stenosis something and like 5 other things. My back hurts me so bad that I can't even wipe my ass without it causing me immense pain. I am now 23 next month and 3 days ago something popped and It hurts so bad that I just want to cry. I have never considered surgery even for half a second, but ever since it popped I'm going to the doctors office on the 19 to talk to him about surgery. I can't live with this kind of pain.

Hi can you please help me understand my situation…
I’ve had DDD for years due to the silliest lower back injury. Since then, over the years I gradually I had more frequent back spasms L5 S6?..
From my most recent painful spasm I looked in the mirror and freaked out to see what looked like scoliosis!… I was sent to do an X Ray and found out that I have mild scoliosis. But I don’t understand why my ‘scoliosis’ can only be seen when I have these spasms due to the inflammation?? So I have scoliosis from having back spasms? Do I have scoliosis in general when I don’t have the spasms? Please clarify I am so confused.
I don’t know what my next steps are.. I’ve been dealing with DDD since 17 and I am now 27 and hoping to grow a family soon, but always worried about pregnancy due to my spine.
Also would you describe my issue as Chronic pain? It’s been going on for 10 years on and off..

2 things: nutrition & activity level.
Eating foods that cause temporary hyperglycemia cause damage to discs, just as they do to knees & his & brain & kidneys & nerves. Cut way back on the sweetened beverages & processed "manmade food" products, especially Fructose. A handful of berries daily is one thing, juices sweet teas, Starbucks, cereals, bagels, bread, chips etc WILL CONTINUE DAMAGE TO YOUR TISSUE. You need lots of water, not diet sodas or dehydration.
Your daily body mechanics make the other half. How you bend over, how long you sit/if you walk over 10k steps a day, getting proper sleep IN A NEUTRAL SPINE POSITION. Your discs cannot heal if you are lax on these 2.

I wish that there were people specialised in Scoliosis in Scotland. I watch these very informative videos and I get disheartened because I do not get any treatment for my 3 lumbar and one cervical bulging discs , cannot do anything about all my discs getting thinner and my " very significant" Scoliosis is not treated due to risks outweighing the benefits of surgery. I am willing to save up money to access a chiropractor but these videos and everything I've read says go to someone who specialises in Scoliosis. Can I damage my spine even more going to a general chiropractor? Would they wven treat me?
I live in the North East of Scotland and the nearest Scoliosis clinic is in London England. Could some one please advise me if a normal chiropractor could help in anyway. ? So as it stands I take copious amounts of painkillers daily and that's it!

For patients who are not local, we have developed an intensive care treatment plan. This condenses the duration and increases the intensity of the treatment. This intensive formula is what provides the ability to overcome the progressive nature of scoliosis. Intensive does not mean painful; it simply means lots of treatment in a short period of time. After the office treatment is received, patient’s receive an individualized home program to sustain the results achieved. That being said I trip to are office in Celebration, Florida or the start of your treatment.

I heard years ago, but do not know if it is true, that when a person sits on an exercise ball and bounces up and down, it causes a pumping action to occur in the disc which pulls in nutrients into the discs from surrounding the body fluids. This pumping action was said to help preserve the discs by slowing the natural aging process of disc degeneration. Will bouncing on an exercise ball help slow the onset and progression of degenerative disc disease? Would rebounding have the same effect?

I was told I have adjacent degenerative disc disease. I had a spinal fusion seven years ago, and thus because of the fusion, the degeneration. I was told surgery would help, but that is what actually caused it. So if I was to have surgery again, in several years I would have the problem further up my spine, correct?
