Yup. Angron never wanted to be followed or obeyed. He did everything he could to force his sons to finally stand up to the monster he was, the weapon of oppression and high riders he knew he had become, and prove they had the same drive of rebellion in them that he had when he did his uprising. Angron wanted to be the villain his sons could overcome and defeat, and instead they fell in line and followed his monstrous actions. This is why I like the world eaters. They are a monstrous mirror to the imperium, moreso than any of the other traitor legions. Butchers who barely think of their actions, and simply kill and conquer to please their god. Arguably, exactly what the Imperium always wanted a space marine to be, but turned against the imperium who made them how they are.
I think him actively making the choice to go through with it is worse. Angron never had to be the villain. Every second he breathed he could have chosen to be better than the High Riders, better than the Emperor. I think that's the saddest part about failure as a human. Most of the time, it's because of our own choices.
@@alastor8091 I agree, but I also find it difficult to imagine doing anything while my brain is being repeatedly turned to paste within my skull. Angron knew the emperor was a tyrant, but he was also too broken to do anything about it but to obey for the time.
fulgrim fell the farthest because angron never got to rise. If not for that then angron would be the most fallen because at least fulgrim enjoys being what he is
Fulgrim's fall always felt the most bullshit because it was literally because he picked up an evil demon sword. Unlike the other Traitor Primarchs he didn't make the conscious choice to join Chaos uncorrupted. We literally have a scene where it's made clear that he would have outright killed Horus if not for the mind control sword.
Perterabo for all the BS he inherited and soul cancer. Imagine guilliman after 12k years in his current grueling spot while the ghost is literally leaving him, but only the most stupid brothers wake up to "help."
"Except for the heartbreaking backstory, crushing emotional trauma, entirely justified and accurate opinion of the emperor, and desperate desire to die to escape his cursed fate, he's really not that interesting" Saying Angron is boring because the demon that used to be him is boring is like digging up Robin William's corpse and saying he isn't funny because his skeleton isn't telling any jokes.
The most recent story where he smashed a mini Golden Throne for Khorne had a sad element to it because thanks to events in the setting Angron is more immortal than ever and respawns every 8 days, 8 hours and 8 minutes. His anger only vanishes as he feels the embrace of death and feels unimaginable peace only for his anger to increase on his respawn because he’s back to being in complete torment. He wants death and can’t have it and that fact only fuels his anger. Looking for the next fight that might finally bring an end to him
What pains me is that Angron had the power to take away any type of pain. He could have taken away a lot of his brother's pain, especially Konrad Kurze, who, although, was never in physical pain but had a broken mind. I believe Angron could have helped Kurze with his powers.
The more you think about it, I don't recall any of the other Primarchs having healing powers, meaning Angron was designed to be the White Mage of his Brothers.
@@reptowolfe8322I’ve seen some people say that everything Vulkan is Angron was meant to be. The kind and supportive Giant that looked out for his fellow man. His rebellion even took this aspect of him into consideration because he hated everything The Emperor had done and made him do.
The tragedy of Angron is that he isn't a character because... He was ROBBED of the opportunity to grow as a person by the nails. The moment the Nails were implanted, Angron died, and all that remained were the scattered remains of broken memories and emotions, all roaring to the skies, wishing only for the pain of remaining incomplete to end.
Angron is a character I absolutely love. I feel he's a grossly misunderstood, TRAGIC character. He's kind of a victim of a shitty circumstance that was a mere shadow of his former self by the time his absent father decided to show up and rip him from his home world.
@@PERSONII3331PERSONIIEVER Didn't offer him and his family any help against overwhelming odds. Tore Angron away from that family when they needed him most. Never told him why he did what he did. Never trained or set anyone up to help Angron understand the imperium. Just dumped him with his legion and basically said here you deal with him. Not sure why the emperor was written this way for Angron's situation but it's almost baffling how much he dropped the ball.
Don’t forget the first thing Angron did when he got out of the capsule was to kill the Eldar party that was there to kill him and prevent his future. In hindsight, that may have been merciful.
I always thought the Eldar created a self fulfilling prophecy. As if he hadn’t have been injured from their attack then Angron may have been able to defeat the first group of slavers that found him and from there done the normal primarch world conquest route.
@@dalorasinum386yes, the Eldar saw this son of the emperor being the bane of the asuryani (like their worst enemy) and by doing what they did it all but hammered the nail on that coffin.
This says just so much about the Eldar that they were murdered by a baby when they had sci-fi future guns that can use black holes as ammo. Primarch or not, it's still a week old baby
Angron is a cautionary tale. Had the Emperor taken five minutes to assess the situation. Had he taken the time to see Angron as a person in need of help, rather than a tool for the Crusade, much of the tragedy that he was could have been avoided. Angron, to me, isn't just about the cycle of abuse. It's a lesson for those outside of that cycle. The Emperor, and even Angron's brothers, had every opportunity to recognize what was happening. Recognize Angron's wounds. Instead he became nothing but a Berserker when he was a victim. Any one of them could have, and should have, taken that time to help him when he couldn't help himself. ...It is also, unfortunately, a lesson that one's own trauma and pain is no excuse for inflicting it on others. Angron was a Berserker, because his choices, even influenced by the Nails, led him to make those choices. He let his own traumas impact the galaxy in a disastrous way. His reputation, and his damnation, were his own fault.
I think the big E saw Angron and Kurze as either lost causes or just too much to deal with before shit got really cooked. Like yeah he could've given him as many pep talks and therapy sessions as he could fit in but all that would do is make the emperor sad and maybe he wouldn't have traitored but Khorne would still have massive influence on the guy who literally is always fueling the blood God regardless of if he wants to or not.
He could have you know... Not given the suicidal madman a legion and instead kept him in cryo. But the Emperor doesn't actually give a shit about mass causalities (remember Russ tried to stop Angron without the Emperor's permission) so he shrugged and let an entire legion turn into psychopaths.
I don't think so, how he dealt with Vulcan and Guilliman show he did think of his son's as people and his sons but he was no fool. Looking at where Kurze and Angron ended up they had no hope of becoming anything more than what they already were sadly. Which is true of a lot of people in real life, once you grow past the age of 7 years old who you are is pretty much set with the only thing able to really change that being trauma which very rarely causes good changes. No I hate to say it but those two were on a path with just one route and one end no matter what the Emperor would have tried to do for his sons. Remember all of the Primarchs were fully grown when he found them so the time to raise them and instill in them what they needed to meet their potential had long since past. All the jokes about Big E being a bad father is funny but it's just not true as he didn't get to raise any of his sons really. We do get to see that the ones who had parents and positive connections with others turned out to be loyalists as well as being more positive in nature than negative while those abused or left to raise themselves ended up on a dark cruel path.
@@TSInfiMa-r6z Would the War Hounds really rebel if the Emperor said "yeah this guy just murdered half of your commanders in a blind rage. you don't need him."
What interests me about Angron is how he was (to my knowledge. I'm kinda new at this) the only Primarch who thought the way the Emperor was going about everything wasn't a good thing to do. I'm pretty sure it's in the HH novel "Betrayer" there's a flashback where he's talking to Russ. And Angron has a speech about how the Emperor is having them enslave the galaxy just like any tyrant. The only difference is the Emperor has everyone doing it convinced its for some greater good.
There might be some contrarian details, but It does seem like Mortarian didn't care for the imperium as a system in general. Having a distain for tyranny and often just being suspicious of the emperors secrets in general. Of course his was all fueled by his resentment of the humiliation of their first meeting, but they seemed like genuine gripes on his part. I do think angron was more open about it regardless
@@GreaterGrievobeast55 Khan was very cynical about it, he never believed in a massive eternal empire for the betterment of Mankind, he never was along for that ride. He saw it all as a moment in history that will eventually pass on as time flowed on, that it would all end in some way at some time as another fallen tyrants dream and something else would take its place. He just saw it as the best option at that time, also he honoured his oaths of loyalty even as events during the Heresy increased his doubts. He is a good example of someone with the same doubts as some of the traitors but dealt with them in a less destructive way and maintained his loyalty.
I may be wrong, but I think Corvus Corax also thought the imperium was horrid, but just kept convincing himself he could make things right when the crusade ended
well, the Emperor does it for a greater good (you can argue that he was right or wrong on that). He does not care about ruling, he wants the best for humanity (this is, defeat the xenos that can destroy it and shut out Chaos)
I mourn Angron and the XII Legion for what they could have been. And while I do love the positive aspects of their nature, hell and even the negative ones that make them complicated and engaging, one of the reasons they aren’t my favorite legion is that (as of now) there doesn’t seem to be any hope of redemption. Truly grim and dark
What I like about Angron is how right he is. He calls out the Emperor and the nature of the Imperium and Guiliman's arrogance. He saw the truth and never denied it until the nails and demonhood shut him up
I wanted to let you that this one touched me. Angron is probably the primarch I'd want to be least like but probably are most like. The comment section of a TH-cam video isn't a great place to reveal why, but "an allegory for the cycle of physical abuse" really hit me in the heart.
I don't know you, but I want you to know I share a similar struggle. Angron is an excellent comfort character for a man who was supposed to be a healer, but forced to be a monster.
Goddamn. Yeah, the way he summed up how Angron became exactly what he feared, and never wanted to be when he was younger. Yeah, couldn't help but think about my own situation... Sux. Never thought I'd see anyone openly saying such a thing in the comments doe...
Angron is a character that I find sympathetic when I hear his backstory, but once he is forced to join the Imperium, all the sympathy and nuance goes out the door as he just becomes The Butcher's Nails and gives Perturabo a run for his money when it comes to abusing his sons. And I never really liked Angron before for how one note he and his legion was. The retcons were probably the best thing to happen to him since I no longer think he's the worst Primarch, overall. It's just interesting how a retcon adds this detail that completely recontextualizes him and made his chapter more than blood crazy berserkers.
@@jasonhemphill8525 somewhere between Lorgar and Ferrus Manus. The latter mainly because I got sick of how much the other Primarchs kept gassing him up, and his Legion being complete idiots.
It is honestly depressing how close Nuceria is to Ultramar. If Angron had avoided the nails for a few decades longer, Gulliman could very well have found him, and we would have a very different Imperium.
I was gonna point this out! On the Galactic scale the very edge of Gulliman's Empire was Nuceria right next to it. If the nails had simply come just a tad bit later then we could of had a moment where Gulliman was the one to find Angron pre nails not Big E. Hell iirc when looking at the time line Gulliman is found pretty early out of all the sons while Angron isn't found till multiple decades later like Big E had just happened to miss Nuceria the first time and went "Oh Shit I missed one over here!" when it was too late.
You bring up a fascinating point, @aidan-h3p! The proximity of Nuceria to Ultramar definitely adds a layer of "what if" to Angron's story. If he had avoided the Butcher's Nails for just a bit longer, it’s intriguing to think about how Roboute Guilliman might have found him and potentially changed the course of history for the Imperium. The timeline really highlights how close these two Primarchs were, and it’s a shame that circumstances led them down such different paths. Imagine if Angron had been raised in Ultramar instead of Nuceria-he could have been a completely different leader! What do you think would have been the biggest impact on the Imperium if they had united instead?
@Whispers-of-the-Warp just to piggy back off it, I would say from my little knowledge it would've prevented more traitor legions as it's theorized Angron would be have psycker ability to take away others pain. people like Curz come to mind. Not to mention, he'd likely be more diplomatic seeking to do things similar to Guilliman but choosing to do things through honor duels more often than not. Angron not having the nails to me would be a far more peaceful leader similar to the salamanders but less scorched earth tactics and more Roman Phalanx style. They would take after the death guard favoring more durability in an attempt to lessen bloodshed, but once they reach you, you'll get torn apart.
@@LordNeltharion There is a lot of "What ifs" with him I read some cool fan fiction (they were obviously a WE fan) about Loyalist Angron holding the gate just by himself. (I can't remember what it was but it was a long time ago) But with his ability to heal never realised or developed its clear the Emperor had other plans for his role its just strange that the legion before finding him did not share a similar trait.
@@Whispers-of-the-Warp Yeah that's probably the most odd thing about him and his Legion since just looking at Ksons their negative trait was related to the positive of their primarch being Warp Attunement with so many of them being psyckers while what little I know of pre-Angron WE's (Or War Hounds in this case) is that the only notable thing about them is they were big on honorable combat and Martial prowess which while fitting for Angron isn't exactly unique among the Legions let alone done to the point it's detrimental
You’ve hit the nail on the head, @pedropierre9594! Angron's story is one of the most tragic in all of Warhammer 40K. He was shaped by his brutal upbringing and the Butcher's Nails, which turned him into a berserker, robbing him of the chance to be the leader he could have been. It's heartbreaking to think about what he might have achieved without that torment. He had the potential for empathy and camaraderie, but instead, he became a weapon of rage and destruction. His journey really highlights the themes of lost potential and the consequences of trauma in the lore. What do you think could have changed if Angron had found a way to overcome the Nails? I’m curious to know your perspective!
@@Whispers-of-the-Warp There was a righteous spirit deep inside Angron, something honorable i think he would have been a great Primmarch but someone had to get completely turned over
Angron is probably the most mishandled character in the 40k universe. His pre-demon form had so much depth but he's literally just written as this drooling, growling, barely coherent character thats just used for whichever fight scenes GW is looking to develop. Angron also falls victim to being an apostle of Khorne, which in general is a shallowly written Chaos God. Khorne can be so much more than blood and guts and skulls.
I hope Khorne starts tempting Angron with more bits and pieces of individuality and agency. It'd let James Workshop flesh out Khorne as more than just The Fight God, and start adding dimensions to Demon Prince Angron too. ...and by saying that I've ensured James Workshop will never do it, haven't I?
Idk, reading Betrayer absolutely made me like Angron and he went from bottom of the list to the highest positions, only to be overtaken by Sanguinius, Magnus and Guilliman
There was a video by a youtuber named RufusJuice where he voiced Angron basically spilling his emotions out to Lorgar on how he should've stayed on Nuceria and it was the rare moments I teared up and cried. Probably because of the performance of Angron in that, but thats what made me realize; "Angron's life really does suck and I feel bad for him".
I do love what Angron said on after Desh'ea, that he died on Nuceria. Angron Thalk'r should've been a warrior, true and proud. A brother to be relied on. But now he's a near unkillable beast. And I love that. It makes me sad, that something so beautiful, designed to perfection, can be brought so low by human cruelty. And he's not a monster, he's a man. A man, a child, made to be all he hates, by men who knew nothing BUT hate. Its beautiful, poetic.
Angron is the most "what could have been" character in the setting. And theorizing what would have happend if he never got enslaved is my favorite part about his character.
Or if they had removed just one nail. I hear on another channel that it would kill him to get them all removed. Hearing his brain regenerates makes me wonder if they could remove one nail safely. Then, after healing and some more time, remove another.
Absolutely, @DylanGosseye! Angron is indeed the epitome of "what could have been." His tragic arc is filled with missed opportunities, especially during the Siege of Terra. Imagine if Angron had never been subjected to the Butcher's Nails. Instead of being a blood-crazed warrior, he could have been a noble leader rallying his brothers. What if, during the Siege, he had confronted Sanguinius not in rage but with a desire to reconcile? They might have forged an alliance that could have changed the outcome of the Heresy. Furthermore, if Angron had retained his free will and sought to unite with his brothers against Horus, he could have been a pivotal force in defending Terra. Picture him leading the World Eaters alongside the Blood Angels, combining their strengths and strategies to repel the traitor forces. Instead of succumbing to chaos, he could have become a beacon of hope for the Imperium, showcasing the potential for redemption even in the darkest times. The possibilities are endless and truly highlight how deeply tragic his fall was. What do you think would have been the most significant change in the Imperium if Angron had embraced that path?
I love this video so much, Angron is my favorite Primarch and you really did him justice. Thank you. My favorite Angron moments are the night before The Emperor arrives when his brothers and sisters are starving and he's feeding them his own blood and then during The Night of the Wolf where he pretty much explicitly tells Leman that they are the villains of this world and what the Emperor is doing is wrong and if he gave more of a shit and hadn't fallen into despair, he would openly rebel against him. P.S. Don't you love when you see me comment it's like oh wait i know that guy that's the mentally ill one
can't remember the other loretuber who mentioned how big E had two siege legions, at least 2 stealth legions etc. always some crossover/redundancy, which in context of Angron's secret ability to bring people peace placed him maybe as intended to be as human/humane as Vulkan or Sanguinius with practical empathy. it just makes bite even harder as a tradegy. add to it the self forfilling prophesy fuck up of the Eldar trying to wipe him out before he grew into what he became, that without their meddling he would've been less likely to be taken by the High Riders. the man got sandpaper instead of toilet roll his whole life and almost at no fault of his own.
Born to be a healer, forced to be a murderer Then bound to a god that will not let him have peace, only war Probably the most tragic and depressing primarch hands down
Angron, a man who sought freedom from cruel masters is now eternally enslaved to an infinitely more horrid being with all of his free will destroyed and is nothing but a beast who begs for an end that won’t come.
You’ve captured Angron’s tragic story perfectly, @ladeandix7451. It’s heartbreaking to see how he sought freedom from his cruel masters only to become a slave to the Butcher's Nails and Khorne. His journey from a gladiator fighting for survival to a Daemon Primarch is a powerful commentary on the loss of autonomy and the perversion of his original intent. The irony of his situation is striking-he yearned for liberation but ended up in a far worse fate. The Butcher's Nails not only stripped him of his free will but also twisted his very essence into something monstrous. It’s a testament to how the Imperium and Chaos can warp even the noblest of intentions into something horrific. Do you think there’s any chance for redemption left in Angron, or is he too far gone? Would love to hear your thoughts!
@@Whispers-of-the-Warp the only thing Antron wants now is release. Death is the only escape for him. From both Khorne and the Imperium. He just wants to be with his gladiator family back on Nuceria and die in glorious battle. Or you can say the Eldar fucked over the galaxy again in a long list of fuck ups.
You're absolutely right, @ladeandix7451. Angron's only desire now is to find the release of death, to escape the torment of serving both Khorne and the Imperium. All he wants is to be reunited with his gladiator family on Nuceria and die a glorious death in battle. You raise an interesting point about the Eldar's role in this tragedy. Could their actions, whether intentional or not, have set in motion the events that led to Angron's downfall? It's a thought-provoking angle that speaks to the complex web of causality in the Warhammer universe. Ultimately, Angron's tale is a cautionary one about the consequences of trauma, the corrosive nature of hatred, and the futility of vengeance. He is a tragic hero undone by forces beyond his control. The only solace is that perhaps, in death, he may finally find the peace that eluded him in life.
Angron didn’t fall. He never had the chance to stand up. Even his demonification wasn’t by his choice. If any Primarchs death is called for, it’s Angrons. Because he’d finally be free. Of all the plans and schemes of others. Of all the pain he’s had to endure. Of all the misery he's been bathed in since he opened his eyes. Maybe in his last moments, clarity would form and Angronius would let himself be seen by all for once. The Son that could have been.
After looking over all of his interactions with his sons. I think his goal was to make them hate him as much as he hates his own slavers because, as far as he was concerned, that is what he has been forced to become. So he wanted his sons to rebel against him and kill him, but instead ended up falling down his path, which passes him off even more! And now he has given up and given in...
It took me a long time before I decided I liked Angron. I can't remember who, but I watched someone cover his new lore from the horus heresy series and he instantly went from "Oh yea, Angron. His entire story is big and angry" to "HOLY SHIT THIS IS THE MOST TRAGIC STORY IN 40K" and he rose to be one of my favorite primarchs. I have a thing I do where I homebrew chapters like crazy, and just make small killteams so I have excuses to paint and write lore (and also have plenty of Kill teams to loan out to friends). My new love for Angron led me to create The Sin Eaters otherwise known as "The Black Butchers". Originally a group of loyalist blackshields that didn't take the butchers nails and left during the heresy and were able to covertly reenter the imperium later on posing as Ultramarines successors. They are a stoic, depressed, and grim chapter, who are aware of the nobility Angron was supposed to have, but have made a name for themselves as efficient killers. Need a planet exterminatused with minimal damage to the environment, resources, or infrastructure? Call the Black Butchers. They will roll in at full or near full chapter strength and methodically go through an entire hive world until every living thing is killed. They'll hate every minute of it, but they will follow orders and get it done. They took the name the Sin Eaters because their greatest desire is to atone for the sins of their father, but they'll never be able to. The name Angron will never be redeemed in the Imperium. They're one of my favorite homebrews.
@@zaneaustin3021 Pre-heresy World Eaters, but change the white to black. The black symbolizes their mourning. Chapter emblem is a fanged mouth biting a chain.

I completely agree, @barlotardy! A glimpse into the alternate timeline of Calmgron would be an incredible addition to the lore. Just imagine if Angron had avoided the Butcher's Nails and embraced his potential as a leader during the Siege of Terra. What if he had stood alongside his brothers, fighting for the Imperium instead of against it? The dynamics of the Siege could have shifted dramatically. Angron, with his unmatched combat prowess and strategic mind intact, might have rallied the other Primarchs to mount a more unified defense against Horus. This could have led to a scenario where not only was Terra saved, but Angron could have become a symbol of hope rather than a harbinger of chaos. It’s fascinating to think about how such a pivotal moment could have altered the fate of the Imperium forever. What specific changes do you think would have emerged from that timeline?
Let it be noted that Angron wasn't beyond saving when future chair vegetable found him. If Emperor had a very basic bit of patience (And let's be real, it wasn't really all that urgent to drop just one more primarch into the crusade, it was going fine as it is), he could restore Angron's brain.
@@andresperedo1275 cap. Emperor could reassemble Angron atom by atom if he wanted to. He just didn't want to waste any time on him. Even in worst case scenario, there was absolutely no need to rush Angron into crusade. Imperium had enough resources to send him off to Mars or someshit and keep him there for as long as it takes to safely remove butcher's nails. By all metrics, this is a better option than giving an entire legion to lobotomised demigod who's only capable of processing violent thoughts.
As a person with depression, Angron’s constant mental pain (and physical pain) and that need to constantly trudge and sometimes force yourself into a rage to get something done is relatable.
Angron just makes me sad. Out of all the lost potential in the traitor Primarchs, Angron leaves the most hollow feeling, because he isn't even a person anymore. Lorgar still holds great influence over his sons, Perturabo much the same. Fulgrim at least spends his days pleasuring himself. Mortarion (at least before the Nurgle Jar) had sons he loved and still had his own mind. Angron has nothing. All his pain and suffering, and he doesn't have a thing to show for it. He got kicked down, kept getting kicked down, kicked himself down, then was brought even lower as the mindless beast of Khorne. He is 40k's biggest loser.
Probably one of my favorite characters in 40k simply based on how perfectly tragic he is, a young empathetic and caring child twisted by circumstance into a raging vengeful monster forever doomed to repeat an ongoing cycle of violence in search for the freedom that he never had and probably won’t ever have
Okay but it would be really cool if Angron the Demon Prince had an obsession with the Tyranids. He wanted to find the biggest monster, one that could kill him and put him out of his missery. Why wouldn't he then, fixate on the biggest monsters in the galaxy.
The tragic thing is as a Demon he now can no longer truly die, I think only the emperor himself has the power to completely erase a demon from the warp like he did with Horus.
@Aceshot-uu7yx no psyker is that powerful besides Big E. To erase a Daemon Prince you need an Alpha+ psyker. Only Alpha+ psykers are Big E and other Daemon Patriarchs.
You know i kinda feel even without chaos fucking him up, I think that Angron was doomed from the start.

I really enjoy your videos where you take more of a video essay approach to Warhammer topics. I think this video could also have been connected to the topic of learned helplessness, which is very much in line with the depression angle, and, like you stated, is the perception that a person learns to perceive the way things are as the only way things can be and that is just tragic.
Thank you, this was fantastic! I've been telling my warhammer buddies for ages about just how tragic Angron's story really is and this was a perfect summation of that
Angron's story is kind of the perfect grimdark. His character isn't really there these days, but the spiral from noble warrior to blood crazed butcher, almost entirely due to circumstances beyond his control, is a perfect tragedy. But even then, if he had his way, even with the nails, even with his loss and tragedy, he didn't want to be the monster he is. He only ever wanted to die free, but he has simply gone from one slave master to another.
Angron’s story before the full explosive outbreak of the Heresy always breaks my heart. Hearing his sorrow and loss, mourning those who were taken from him. That. Knowing he will never again be the same. Or feel that sense of belonging. A tragedy of a character that never got to grow into what he could’ve been.
One of my favorite parts of Angron's final battle with Sanguinius is when he is in so much pain from the Butcher's Nails that he breaks through the Khornate haze and has the lucid thought of: "I remember now! I am Angron, my name is Angron!"
Angron is my favorite primarch, probably my favorite character in all of 30/40k because of how tragic and depressing his story is. He is so much like his brothers, but at the same time is nothing like them. I've currently got a custom successor chapter in the works that are more representative of the War Hounds were and what Angron was supposed to be.
This was probably one of the best videos you've done. Totally wasn't expecting the intro bit but damn I was sucked in like it was some audiobook. Just an incredibly well done video and gave some better insight on the Angriest Man Ever. Thanks Mr.Bones
Something about angron makes me love him so much. Idk if its the tragedy or the understanding of the cycle of abuse but i really just love the character.
I totally get that feeling, @npc1172! Angron's character is incredibly compelling, especially when you consider the layers of tragedy and the cycle of abuse he endured. His journey from a gladiator fighting for freedom to a Daemon Primarch is heartbreaking. The potential for Angron to be more than just a weapon of chaos adds depth to his character and makes his story all the more poignant. It’s fascinating to think about how different the Warhammer universe could be if he had found a path toward healing and understanding. What aspects of his character resonate with you the most?
Few words about "brain in pain" -- brain as an organ doesnt have nerves that can signal a pain. It's a metaphor about unberable, all-consuming, psychicly burning need to sublime tough something, that gives temproary relief.
"A good story, not a good character" what a great way of describing any literary creation, especially this one! Angron's is a tragic and thought provoking tale, though it is the origin story of a monster whose present form leaves just about no room for further depth or development.
There are 2 parts in the book betrayer that I find really interesting for Angron. First is the conversation between Kharn and Argel'Tal where they state they feel a natural reverence towards the primarchs, but not to Angron, like he is missing something the others have. The second is on their way to Nuceria, Angron briefly changes, he spends time with his legion, watches their duels in the fighting pit and drinks with them. A tiny glimpse of what Angron could have been. There's not much I can think to analyse this, they're just 2 moments I really enjoy about the character.
This video was great. One of your best. When viewed as a story Angron truly feels as though he blossoms into art in a way the moment to moment can never Really capture.
The first Warhammer book that I ever listened to was Betrayer and the way it portrayed the World Eaters and Angron as a broken Demi-god was amazing to me, I’d never heard of a more broken character at the time. I love Angron as a character because of what he was and how he came to be what he is.
Something I've seen brought up before that really does make one of my favorite "What If?" Paths for Angron is that... Apparently, Nuceria is/was within the chunk of space that was Macragge's territory under Guilliman. Imagine Roboute finding Angron first. Finding him before the Emperor found either of them, knowing instinctively that this broken man was his "brother" and understanding that someone terrible and irreversible has been done to him.
Angron has to be one of if not the saddest characters in all of warhammer for me. As he started off as a very compassionate being who was just at the wrong place or world at the wrong time as unlike his brothers who were send to world with people who cared about them his world only saw him as a tool, as a pet, as something to used over and over again for there amusement and as a result forced to kill the only person on the planet who cared for him by take a part of his brain out and putting a literal torture device in instead then to have his real father the emperor take him away form his only friend which he try to save just shows angrons life and inevitable it was these this stuff to happen to him. Say what you want about the other primarks and there lives but at least they still had something mortarion had typhus, perturabo had his adopted father and his sister before killing her. And even lorgar with his abusive father and all that he still had a world and legion that praised him. But I ask you what did Angron truly have a legion that reminds him of his old life and fail to save it. The fear and discussed of his brother who mostly saw him as a monster then a man the nails the dug into his brain reminding him of what newsyria and the rulers of that planet turned him into. Overall Angron in my personal opinion has to be the saddest of all the traitor primarks especially after watch this video that saying something as the thousand son and alpha legion are some of my most favourite traitor legions out there and even can admit that angrons life was more sadder than Magnus fall and at the end of day the only for Angron to feel true happiness is if he never existed at all. Sorry I got so philosophical I just love these kinds of videos keep up the good work Mr bones 40K. 👍
I always see Angron as a walking tragedy, everything just went wrong with him, the best he could be is already long gone, even the Emperor tried to help after taking him out of the planet, but there was nothing he could do. I hope you do something similar to Perturabo, Hammer of Olympia made me cry.
I wanna write a short story about Angron finding a moments peace, essentially a short story about that one comic with him on a paradise world, where he feels joy at peace and even loved. People don’t see him as a monster, a weapon, a slave. Just an odd looking stranger.
Before watching this video I felt a kind of relation to Angron in that I get return to monkee mad sometimes. After watching this, it really opened my eyes to a piece of me in a different light. RIP Angron, you will live on in all of us.
This is all why Angron is and always will be my favorite Primarch. It's just an extremely tragic story and it's wild to say, but I'm genuinely happy for him everytime he dies because it's the only time he gets a brief moment of peace.
Ive never been a fan of Angron, well I am a big fan of his new model that thing is dope, but this video really does have me thinking about him differently.
Betrayer was hands down top book of the horus heresy series. Angron's words to Guilliman hit harder than any others in the Heresy. Great video covering a well-milked tragedy.
His primarch novel was the one that gives angron so much needed character development. Alongside showing us his ability to take the pain of others as said, there was a segment where world eater librarians try to help angron during one of his "episodes"(they liken his nails as radiating a black spidery looking aura in the warp, possibly hinting at nails having a connection to the warp that prevented librarians from being compatible with the damned things in the first place). And there was a world eater captain(forgot the name, damnit) who, if he didn't die at the hands of angron and nails-equipped marines at ghenna, would be a great loyalist character. Novel also covered the attempts at replicating the nails, with kharn himself volounteering and surviving the nails implantation. Speaking of pre-nails world eaters(and pre-heresy legions too), I've been reading alot on that for my "wrath hounds" homebrew, they're coming along nicely, black and bronze with a bit of red(a la their red hand destroyers) and some tank tread-looking decorative chains. Now, regarding angron's hair and eye colors, depictions vary, one artwork shows him with red hair and yellow/amber eyes, which I find works for him(and said wrath hounds) pretty well.
reading angron's story really hit me at some points, his ability to be able to absord the mental anguish of others and his care for his fellow gladiators really shows what he could've been, and in some sense him to be emotionally broken twice helps with the world-building, plus it has one of my favourite quotes in 40k: “That he will give his brothers and sisters their liberty, even if he has to spill an ocean of to do so. Tonight he gives them all that he has the power to give. If only for a short time, he grants them a reprieve from the torture that consumes their lives. Morning will come, and bring the hot dust, but until then, Angron suffers so that he might give his family some measure of peace."
One part that struck me about Angron was when reading Angron the red angel It's only like one short paragraph about halfway through the book but it says that one of the ways nails torment him is by never letting him sleep. He will on very rare occassions become so exhausted he collapses and passes out at which point he'll get a few seconds of rest before the nails kick in and start torturing him again.
When the warhounds were slow-walking over their foes, im always reminded of the scene in iRobot where you see the crowd of rioters being slowly marched over by the waves of NS5's and I cant help but love that image for the warhounds. Sucks we lost the warhounds and Angron
I know you've used this music for a lot of videos, but I appreciate how fitting your background music is. The Caretakers "Its Just a Burning Memory" is a fitting song for Angron. His mental decline is a much more violent parallel to the Alzheimer's/dementia that the album is about: slowly losing the little bits of yourself until you are just scared and alone. "Angron died after Dish'ea, it's just his body didn't know."
Since I have started getting into 40K lore no character has blindsided me more than Angron. I feel like part of that is that while nowhere near 1-1, I can see one of the paths I could go down if I am not careful is quite similar to what happened to him. My head has been in constant pain for like 9 years now, and sometimes it gets bad and I lash out at everyone around me so I cut myself off socially as much as possible to minimize the damage. Sadly this has been happening more and more recently - my mood is just incredibly volitile. There is also the matter of how Angron didn't really seek getting the nails removed once he was a part of the great crusade - but at that point I wouldn't be surprised if he developed "learned helplessness" from having them in his head for so long. You just get to the point where everything you have ever tried to make things better has failed for so long that you just never look at anything people tell you to have hope about with anything more than complete disintrest at best and another garunteed failure that might just make things worse at worst.
The way you describe the War Hounds style of fighting makes me think about the World Eater Skraal from the book the Battle for the Abyss. I remember thinking it was weird seeing a World Eater be both calm and calculated and brutally vicious. He definitely changed how I viewed loyalist WEs and I think he needs more attention being one of the best parts of book he appears in
One could say that Angron - or whomever he was supposed to be - died his first death under those carving knives. His first death but it his last. Fitting that in the current setting among his chaos daemon “gifts” is the respawn - but really, the ability to continually die and die again
Angron is a character who's every possibility and hope was stripped from him from beginning to end. All of his poor decisions and cruelty can easily be pointed out by the nails, made specifically to incentivise violent behavior through the worst physical and psychological pain imaginable. His encounter with Guilliman and dialogue with Lorgar made me realize just how far he was, and the path back to redemption was burned beyond repair. Perhaps it's because of this that the Roboutian Heresy is still one of my favorite pieces of WH fanfiction.
I hate how much i personally relate to him and his story and his development. I long to stop feeling every I do, and I just want to enjoy things and be happy. I’m tired of the anger, I’m tired of the hatred, I’m tired of the pain… I just want to smile and feel anything but THIS just once before I go…
I miss the boy I once was… but that boy isn’t here anymore… I miss the joy of just having my eyes open as I looked at the world around me… now I just wish I never saw anything ever again… because I’m tired of always watching it all die.
Angry Ron and Lore Loving Gar's excellent adventure really is a great book for the three Primarchs that feature in it. The tragedy of Angron, Lorgar's love for his brother and faith in his new, horrible gods, and Gulliman going "Get off my planet!" What's not to love?
Angron is easily my second favorite Primarch, only barely beaten out by Vulkan. I was initially drawn to Angron because - in a universe where you grant warriors firearms I'm going to be the guy who chooses a sword. However, when I listened Betrayer - when I heard the pain, sadness and the rage everytime Angron spoke, especially on the mountain where his true brothers and sisters made their last stand - it literally brought me to tears. Angron is the most justified character in 40k to do what he did and its because of Angron that I am on team Chaos.
I never knew the deeper lore of Angron and his own attempt. I can kinda relate to him in some ways even on the self attempt part, but instead I chose the hard path in life. As for the empathy part, he may have been an empathic being, but now we are the ones that feel empathy towards him. Amazing video, like always my other favorite is over my favorite legion is the Space Wolves because I kinda also relate to Leman.
I personally think Angron shows the horrors of the lobotomy and human cruelty really well. It’s sickening and I hate that people like that existed/exist who’d do that to someone for their own disgusting whims. ^^
Angron is my favorite character in the setting but man is his story depressing. The eldar attack, getting enslaved, the butcher's nails , he was delt such a bad hand in life. And then when he and his fellow gladiators were about to face there final battle BIG E came. BIG E didn't save Angron's life he ruined his death by taking him away from his gladiators and letting them die. I still don't know why the BIG E didn't save Angron's gladiators or just put him out of his misery
Argon is the epitome of “A good male role-model goes a long way”. Truly could have been so much more if he didn’t feel like he had to turn away from his father.
I get where you're coming from, @elitefish2239. Angron's brutal decision to kill World Eaters who refused the Butcher's Nails is definitely a turning point that makes it hard to sympathize with him. It highlights the tragic irony of his character-he sought to free his brothers from oppression but ended up enforcing a different kind of tyranny. Imagine if he had chosen a different path during the Siege of Terra. What if, instead of executing those who resisted the Nails, he had fought alongside them to find a way to overcome their limitations? This could have led to a more unified force against the Imperium, showcasing the potential for redemption and brotherhood among the World Eaters. The "what if" scenarios surrounding Angron are endless. If he had embraced his role as a leader rather than a tyrant, he might have forged a legacy that inspired loyalty instead of fear. What do you think would have happened if Angron had sought to unite his Legion rather than divide it?
@@Whispers-of-the-Warp yea but he didn’t kill them during the siege of Terra it was a long time before then, and it was brutal and merciless, they wanted what was best for the legion to the point of begging him to stop. To me it’s like the whole “magnus did nothing wrong” no magnus did a lot wrong he could have done a lot to change the situation he put himself into, angron is the same, it’s hard to feel sympathy for someone who continues to make terrible decisions. Also angron is just kinda a retard, like dude killed 1/10th of his legion every time they failed to take a world in 31 hours then expects the less amount of marines to now take a different world in 31 hours🤦
What could’ve been the greatest primarch reduced to nothing more than a slave unable to escape his four masters the high riders, the Emperor, Khorne, and the Nails. There’s almost nothing left to be a character with a personality outside of slaughter but the echo of what he could’ve been makes a him great anyways
Wow… that was really good. I did enjoy Angron’s story, but it was with that pretty surface take of “cycles of abuse.” This gave so much more insight. Thank you. Also the Omori music at the end gave me a jumpscare. Good pick.
Love the opening story bit. You narrated it really well. :3 Already made me think of Angron a bit differently - like oh no, this is gonna be fucking tragic. (Also, used your code, got my resupply of Bo'Hole Blast, Good and tried the Brand Risk flavor at your recommendation last time. Agree that the Creamsicle flavor is dang good, especially as a caffeine-free soda substitute. :3) Edit: Oh yeah, that was a new perspective on Angron. Man. What a tragedy. His story eroded away his character. Man. (Also shoutouts to you crediting your editor. I don't see a lot of youtubers like, doing that, appreciate it.)
The fact that he thought his true sons were the ones he killed on Istvaan III is depressing
@@alastor8091the nails........
@@alastor8091 so the nails, not his choice and not removable, had nothing to do with it?
@@alastor8091 I agree, but I also find it difficult to imagine doing anything while my brain is being repeatedly turned to paste within my skull. Angron knew the emperor was a tyrant, but he was also too broken to do anything about it but to obey for the time.
Fulgrum may have fallen the farthest and hardest, but Angron is (in my opinion) the most tragic of the Traitor Primarchs
fulgrim fell the farthest because angron never got to rise. If not for that then angron would be the most fallen because at least fulgrim enjoys being what he is
Ya like the depth
The idea all he wanted to do is ease people's pain.
For me I’ve always thought Konrad was really tragic
"Except for the heartbreaking backstory, crushing emotional trauma, entirely justified and accurate opinion of the emperor, and desperate desire to die to escape his cursed fate, he's really not that interesting" Saying Angron is boring because the demon that used to be him is boring is like digging up Robin William's corpse and saying he isn't funny because his skeleton isn't telling any jokes.
What a way to put emphasis on your point. Damn.
God damn Deadpool digging up corpses again
The most recent story where he smashed a mini Golden Throne for Khorne had a sad element to it because thanks to events in the setting Angron is more immortal than ever and respawns every 8 days, 8 hours and 8 minutes. His anger only vanishes as he feels the embrace of death and feels unimaginable peace only for his anger to increase on his respawn because he’s back to being in complete torment. He wants death and can’t have it and that fact only fuels his anger. Looking for the next fight that might finally bring an end to him
Damn, well said
Best way to describe it honestly
What pains me is that Angron had the power to take away any type of pain. He could have taken away a lot of his brother's pain, especially Konrad Kurze, who, although, was never in physical pain but had a broken mind. I believe Angron could have helped Kurze with his powers.
The more you think about it, I don't recall any of the other Primarchs having healing powers, meaning Angron was designed to be the White Mage of his Brothers.

Bare in mind that Emperor was only absent due to the treachery of a woman! And chaos, tbf, but I'd rather blame the woman 😂

@@elyrienvalkyr8167 says a lot about gw poor writing of factions without power armor lmfao
@@SuperPal-tr3go You want a legion to rebel early?
He just saw it as the best option at that time, also he honoured his oaths of loyalty even as events during the Heresy increased his doubts.
He is a good example of someone with the same doubts as some of the traitors but dealt with them in a less destructive way and maintained his loyalty.

well, the Emperor does it for a greater good (you can argue that he was right or wrong on that).
Who do you reckon the worst primarch is now?

Grimdark stories have a really bad habit of hurting their own stories to show off exactly how bad the universe is
Well Khorne was also supposed to embody honour and martial discipline but that was pushed to the wayside for some reason.

Probably the most tragic and depressing primarch hands down
Angron, a man who sought freedom from cruel masters is now eternally enslaved to an infinitely more horrid being with all of his free will destroyed and is nothing but a beast who begs for an end that won’t come.
At least he gets 8 days 8 hours 8 minutes and 8 seconds of peace
"yeah there's no end title joke, I thought it would fuck up the tone" I laughed so hard JSJDHS
The depth of Angrons character is in the fact that the depth of his character was cut out
Angron didn’t fall.
Angron didn't fall. He was pushed - and he's still falling to this day.
Yo what’s the color scheme for the Sin Eaters?
@@zaneaustin3021 Pre-heresy World Eaters, but change the white to black. The black symbolizes their mourning. Chapter emblem is a fanged mouth biting a chain.

@@zaneaustin3021 Hell yea, I appreciate that! I did see your other comment, but I just wasn't able to reply yesterday. If you or anyone else wants to use my lore, color scheme, or chapter symbol either for inspiration or outright I'm totally cool with that.
Even if it's only a short story in some what if alternate timeline, I wish GW would give us a glimpse of the Calmgron that never was.
He tried to do it, and he couldn't
@@andresperedo1275 cap. Emperor could reassemble Angron atom by atom if he wanted to. He just didn't want to waste any time on him.
Even in worst case scenario, there was absolutely no need to rush Angron into crusade. Imperium had enough resources to send him off to Mars or someshit and keep him there for as long as it takes to safely remove butcher's nails. By all metrics, this is a better option than giving an entire legion to lobotomised demigod who's only capable of processing violent thoughts.
@@endlessnoodle3056 no, he cannot. I recommend you to read Master of Mankind, specifically Chapter 7.
As a person with depression, Angron’s constant mental pain (and physical pain) and that need to constantly trudge and sometimes force yourself into a rage to get something done is relatable.
The Caretaker music will never not be triggering. The paranoia of my memories buring away with no way to stop it is just terrifying.
Please, can you tell me where it's from because it's an earworm by now but I have zero context...!
No worries, found it. Jesus. I need to give it a listen one day but I know I'll cry. I used to study nursing. I was too weak for that profession.
@marsgap other psykers can do it, I just don't know about a demon primarch though.
@Aceshot-uu7yx no psyker is that powerful besides Big E. To erase a Daemon Prince you need an Alpha+ psyker. Only Alpha+ psykers are Big E and other Daemon Patriarchs.
I would love to see a conversation between Angron (before he became a Daemon) and Kratos during the Norse story
Poor bastard never had a chance, did he?
Post Script: Appropriate paraphrased line from a book I read. "Some men fall. Some are pushed."
Yes. The big sad Worldeater man. Angron is my favorite Primarch for his symbolism.
Oh fuck 2 videos in same day? Sound gorgeous.
the benefits of having an editor right?
multitasking haha
That bit about the War Hound legion's tactic sounds a lot like the Alpha Legion's "harrowing"
7:00 more TF2 references. Nice!
I liked how you started the video the same way Angron started his life, becomes clear just how confusing and tragic his life was
Something about angron makes me love him so much.
I hope you do something similar to Perturabo, Hammer of Olympia made me cry.
hello
I wanna write a short story about Angron finding a moments peace, essentially a short story about that one comic with him on a paradise world, where he feels joy at peace and even loved. People don’t see him as a monster, a weapon, a slave. Just an odd looking stranger.
Arthur’s editor really did just hard carry my will to go through this video without bawling by showing the kitties at the end
Before watching this video I felt a kind of relation to Angron in that I get return to monkee mad sometimes. After watching this, it really opened my eyes to a piece of me in a different light. RIP Angron, you will live on in all of us.
This is all why Angron is and always will be my favorite Primarch. It's just an extremely tragic story and it's wild to say, but I'm genuinely happy for him everytime he dies because it's the only time he gets a brief moment of peace.
if the emperor had shown compassion and saved his friends angron while still in uncontrollable rages would of shown true loyalty to the emperor
This was fucking tragic. Appreciate you waiting to do it right by yourself, I really dig the 25 minute time, this is really good.
I can’t wait to watch this after work, been wanting this ever since you talked about how he can just respawn like 40 minutes later
Now, regarding angron's hair and eye colors, depictions vary, one artwork shows him with red hair and yellow/amber eyes, which I find works for him(and said wrath hounds) pretty well.
reading angron's story really hit me at some points, his ability to be able to absord the mental anguish of others and his care for his fellow gladiators really shows what he could've been, and in some sense him to be emotionally broken twice helps with the world-building, plus it has one of my favourite quotes in 40k:
“That he will give his brothers and sisters their liberty, even if he has to spill an ocean of to do so.
Tonight he gives them all that he has the power to give. If only for a short time, he grants them a reprieve from the torture that consumes their lives. Morning will come, and bring the hot dust, but until then, Angron suffers so that he might give his family some measure of peace."
I’m brand new to Warhammer and these lore videos are my new manic obsession
Honestly this kinda “cold open” of the video was incredible. Completely stopped me at my desk to listen.
That intro was so SO 🔥, good job dude. I wouldn't mind more narrations like that
Angron is a character who's every possibility and hope was stripped from him from beginning to end.
I wish I had a choice back then… to have had control of my life before everything started going…. That way…. I wish I had a choice…. Ever.
Angry Ron and Lore Loving Gar's excellent adventure really is a great book for the three Primarchs that feature in it. The tragedy of Angron, Lorgar's love for his brother and faith in his new, horrible gods, and Gulliman going "Get off my planet!"
What's not to love?
This is one of your best pieces. Really good, brother.
Arthur. This is incredible bro. Im amazed and so proud to watch u grow from 14k subs to here. Cant wait to see what u make next!!!
I do agree. Monsters are not born they are made. Angron, Dexter, dr. Doofensmerz. Your past may form you, but it doesn't define you.
This was absolutely brilliant, Brother. You’ve done an excellent job of capturing my favourite Primarch. Thank you Brother.
Arthur, I think this is one of your best videos yet. The opening monologue is amazing!!!
Also, I REQUIRE Storm Wardens Lore
It's the nature of tragedy that it's already too late to stop the tragic end before the story even began.
I love the intro to this, please continue in that style!
Argon is the epitome of “A good male role-model goes a long way”. Truly could have been so much more if he didn’t feel like he had to turn away from his father.
Angron is a tragic and relatable figure right up to the second he forced the nails on the legion.
I lost all sympathy for angron after I learned that he killed all the world eaters that wouldn’t take the butchers nails.
