  • If you or someone you know experiences spasticity or stiffness in the legs, incorporating weightbearing exercises into your routine can be beneficial for increasing muscle strength, improving coordination, and reducing spasticity after a stroke. In this tutorial, we'll demonstrate some effective exercises that you can try at home. These exercises will improve your ability to move your stroke leg and walk better after stroke.
Neuroplasticity: Engaging in weight-bearing exercises stimulates neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new neural connections. This is crucial for stroke recovery as it helps rewiring the brain, promoting motor control and restoring movement abilities. It makes you aware of what muscle needs to be active and relaxed when standing or walking.
    Exercise 1: Squats
"First up, we have squats, which are excellent for strengthening the leg muscles and promoting weightbearing. Here's how you can do them:
    1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
    2. Slowly lower your body by bending your knees, as if you're sitting back into a chair.
    3. Keep your back straight and your heels on the ground.
    4. Rise back up to the starting position.
    5. Repeat this exercise for a set of 10 to 15 repetitions, gradually increasing as you become more comfortable."
    Exercise 2: Lunges
"Lunges are another great weightbearing exercise for reducing leg spasticity. Here's how to perform them correctly:
    1. Start by standing with your feet hip-width apart.
    2. Take a step forward with your right leg, bending your knee to form a 90-degree angle.
    3. Keep your left knee slightly above the ground, without touching it.
    4. Push back up to the starting position and repeat with your left leg.
    5. Aim for 10 to 15 repetitions on each leg, gradually increasing the number as you progress."
    Exercise 3: Side-Lunges
"Lunges are another great weightbearing exercise for reducing leg spasticity. Here's how to perform them correctly:
    1. Start by standing with your feet hip-width apart.
    2. Take a step side with your right leg, bending your knee slightly.
    3. Keep your left knee straight.
    4. Push back up to the starting position and repeat with your left leg.
    5. Aim for 10 to 15 repetitions on each leg, gradually increasing the number as you progress."
    Exercise 4: Step-Ups and Step-Downs
"Step-ups and step-downs are beneficial for strengthening the leg muscles and improving balance. Here's what you need to do:
    1. Find a sturdy step, bench, or elevated surface.
    2. Place one foot on the step and push through the heel to lift your body up.
    3. Keep your core engaged and maintain a controlled movement.
    4. Step down and repeat with the other leg.
    5. Aim for 10 to 15 repetitions per leg, adjusting the height of the step as needed."
6.. Do the opposite with step-downs. Use yir walker if necessary.
    Exercise 5: Chair push-ups
"Chairnpush ups are excellent for engaging the quadriceps and glute muscles while promoting weightbearing. Here's how to do them:
    1. Sit on a sturdy chair
    2. Use both arms if you can but if one side is weak, use your good arm.
    3. Push up like you are about to stand up.
    4. Put equal amount of weight in both legs
    5. Aim for 10 to 15 repetitions.
That concludes our tutorial on weightbearing exercises to reduce leg spasticity. Start slowly and gradually increase intensity as your strength improves. Hello Nathan! Months ago I discovered your channel and started doing your recommended stroke leg / arm exercises. I have been doing nearly daily walking around the neighborhood since the end of May averaging 2 to 3 kms thanks to your exercises. After seeing the exercises in this video, I have decided to incorporate it to my routine because although I can walk and have balance, stepping still feels awkward. Daghang salamat sa makausa pa. 😊
