      I've logged hundreds if not thousands of hours on each Disgaea game, and 4 is by far my personal favorite in the series. The storyline is a bit more challenging than most of the other games, but the postgame is the most streamlined of them all due to things like not having weapon skills. I've platinum chievo'd it on both PS3 and Vita versions, and whenever I feel like playing a Disgaea game while exercising or studying, 4 is my game of choice.
      tl;dr - Get around to playing it, it's a damned good game.

    The original is still my favorite. I liked the characters and story best (2nd place probably Disgaea 4). Also, I really liked that you could clear a level (esp item world) by clearing the geo panels. That was fun and rewarding for me, and allowed me to go way past my level into item world and get some kick-ass items. In later Disgaeas they greatly nerf the damage from geo panels - it will still do significant damage to the enemies, but it's unlikely to kill them. I also liked being able to throw an enemy onto a geo symbol to start the chain. As for not being able to complete item world levels, I found that to be pretty rare, and that's what Mr. Gency Exits are for.

    • @ThomB1031

    the first one is literally the only answer to this question. Laharl, Flonne, Etna are core characters to know. That and the games get more and more stuff added in over time and will be far too overwhelming for a newer player. After the 1st one, then you could pretty easily go to any other one.

      millgiass the dlc disproves that it is a prequel with Sicily and flonne being in the dlc. Not sure if that’s cannon or not but the dlc is the only thing that even can tie them together

    • @millgiass
      @millgiass 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      DLC is scarcely canon, unless it's a whole new storyline related to the main canon they are usually just cameo events. Disgaea 3 & 4's post-game COULD be considered canon, perhaps, but most isn't. On top of that we don't know how much time passes between the end of the game and the start of the event in post. It could have been millennia. The only FOR SURE time-passage we can know of is that Disgaea 1 ---> Disgaea 2 = 6 years because they used to make the character ages known. Ever since 3 they have been more secretive about it. Plus it's really hard to know with how much time-warping the series does. Like Lord Zetta going back in time and beating up his associates. Or Fuuka and Desco going back in time helping with past events.
      The way the universe works is LOOSE at best. It's hard to decide what is and isn't canon because things are fairly random. The reason I believe Disgaea 3's post game/DLC is mainly canon is the fact that Flonne is an Archangel in Disgaea 4. However Rasberyl never appears as a teacher again so that calls it all into question. There are always contradictions like that. Like how in D4 Flonne is aged up but Laharl & Etna are not. So, I think that it's PROBABLE that Disgaea 5 is a prequel. Not FOR SURE, but it's a safe bet with all the winking the creators did.

    Not being able to reach the portal in D1 was generally solved with 1.) bring a geomancer to reroll the geostones.
    2.) bring mr gency exits. always bring gency exits.
    its from an era of gaming when if you fuck up (i.e. Not bring gency exits) you lose hours of gameplay.
    I understand with the new mario's not even having mario death and having an instant win hat that instantly wins losing hours of gameplay for making mistakes is not a thing the new gamers want.
    but its not a bug, its just a feature of not having them hold your hand and have everything be alright because everyone makes mistakes and you don't need to lose anything significant to learn from your mistakes.

    I started with 4, was actually kinda confused, then I went to 2 and beat it. Then I moved on to 5 which is now my all time favorite.
    If you ever think you might want to try to the earlier ones, you should probably start there then work your way up. Ever since putting 100+ hrs into 5, going back to 2 kinda hurt. It feels so sluggish, there's much less systems to play with, it's harder to grind up new characters, you can't see how much damage an attack will do, etc etc.
    If you're looking to play just one Disgaea game, 5 is the absolute pinnacle of Disgaea (disregarding the story). So many systems to play with, so much grind, SO many different characters, the art is gorgeous. 5 was absolute peak Disgaea and sadly it seems they haven't been able to match it since. Plus I think it was the most popular one, so you can find a lot more content about it online if you need to.

    Until the Disgaea HoD remake comes, I have to agree and say Disgaea 5 and 4. Mostly 5 since it is the most easiest of the series and beginner friendly in my opinion but Disgaea 4 I say has the best story. Yes, people say the first game has the best story but I think that Disgaea 4 was more exciting and probably a good game to get into after playing 5 after knowing the how the series works.

    I put 300 hours into Disgaea 5 on the Nintendo Switch. I've also played the DS version of Desgaea one. I loved it being portable, like the Switch version I had so I didn't mind.
    I also watched my brother play 3 and I played it a little too. He followed a guide and got super high stats faster then I could.
    I beat only 2 Baal fights, the 1st on the DS that was easy thanks to a lot of high level recruits and 5 where I got over 4 units with Max 40 mil base stats and the Marjoly resurrection exploit.

    Thanks for making this video, it's super helpful! I've only played the demo for D5 and LOVED it, but I figure I may as well start the franchise from the beginning, so now my copy of D1 is on its way! As for the grinding, I tend to grind harder than average anyway (for example, for FFXIII, I grinded on pulse for about two weeks straight before the last levels and final boss).

    My favorite is still Disgaea 3 (the first one I played), as I simply love the story, the Netherworld Academy setting, and the characters. It is a bit on the grind-heavy side, getting Statisticians is a slow process initially, and having to pass a bill every time you want to change the enemy levels is tedious. The Piracy and Reverse-Piracy mechanics were rather fun though! I wish they would remake D3 in a slightly newer and more accessible way, maybe making it easier to get Statisticians (like in Disgaea 4 or Disgaea D2) and maybe bring the Cheat Shop in, instead of having to go through the assembly every time...

  • @videogameslueth7744
    @videogameslueth7744 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like to add one thing to the video.
    If people want to play the best versions of disgaea one through four then they should get a PlayStation TV. With that console it can play the main line disgaea games on the big screen. The system is cheap and the memory cards are getting cheaper so you can get an 4GB memory card to play the games.
    Overall, I think you did a great job giving an overview of the series and helping people get into the series. I personally think disgaea 2 is a great entry point. The mechanics are more main stream which makes them more accessible and understandable to a newbie. Also the game doesn’t require a lot of grinding compared to the first game. The first game is a bit slow and no way to speed up battles which can make grinding a pain for some. Disgaea one does have a great story don’t get me wrong, but I feel gameplay is super important as well to getting into the series. This is what I think anyways.

  • @QMulative

    Got into Disgaea with the DS game; it had a feature that NIS hasn't been able to replicate on single screen systems: an overhead map. Because they insist on using an orthographic view for that tactics-RPG feel, you're not going to be able to judge distances by the size of things, so something that looks like it could a short distance away might actually just be far away and far downward. having the overhead map available on the 2nd screen really helps with that.
    Prinny Commentary was pretty great, too, a fantastic way to add replay value to the story mode with just a tiny bit of extra effort on their part.
    Enjoying 5 Complete and 6 on the Switch, looking forward to 7, might get 4 Complete Plus, and I guess I'll play 2 and 3 when they get remakes or "Complete Plus" editions on the next Nintendo system (hopefully with the features that 6 brought to the table to speed up the tedium of repeating the same stages over and over again).
    I can say without a doubt that 6 is the best entry for the series. It fixes the two biggest problems with the series:
    1. Having to complete the game before it'll let you start power-gaming (despite advertising that power-gaming as a core part of the series).
    2. Having to sink 10000 hours grinding the same stages over and over to get into the power-gaming aspect.
    Now getting to Lv.9999 and reincarnating is part of the main story, rather than the afterparty! D.I. and Auto-repeats mean instead of sitting there and numbing your mind to play the same stages over and over to level up, you can do some strategic battle programming just ONCE, set the game and forget about it for an hour and the grinding happens by itself at up to 32x speed!

    My vote on where to seriously start the post game side of the Disgaea series is Disgaea 2 Dark Hero Days (Disgaea One for the story only first, as you recommended) as it has a fully realized item world with the least amount of feature creep that was added as the series went on. Once a newer player grasps the core mechanics in Disgaea 2, all the features added in 3 4 D2 and 5 will be more easily digested. While Disgaea 5 is the newest, it is really confusing to new players with all the new features clamoring for their attention.

    • @thelegacyofgaming2928
      @thelegacyofgaming2928 ปีที่แล้ว

      Disgaea 5 is a terrible starting point tbh. There's like 50 different mechanics that will scare away the average SRPG player who might be used to 3 or 4 core mechanics with the level capping at 99.

  • @luckyowl10
    @luckyowl10 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    As a big fan of Disgaea 1 (from PSP and PC), It's great. Even the item world is ok as long as you have the level skip book (which you should always have) or just characters that throw very very far (those are lifesavers).
    If you play smart and watch a few guides on grinding and tricks, it's not hard to finish the main storyline. But it's incredible hard to finish the hardest bosses possible without some tricks like stealing max level monsters.
    What you grind for 100 hours (which some say it isn't even that much) others speed run in 2-4h. What you can also do, as most speedrun ideas are strategy more than skill.

Disgaea 1, Final Fantasy 7 and the Neptunia Hyperdimension dlc has been removed, perhaps other stuff has as well.
