i remember when this video came out, i’ll never forget it. i was going through my “metallica phase” and was just “enjoying playing covers” and i was getting really good; i thought i was just going to keep it a hobby, until i saw this. everything James says is so well thought out and comes straight from the heart, and it’s so inspirational and honest. THIS ALONE, made me want to be a professional guitar player. watching this as a 12 year old kid made me so excited and so inspired and so hopeful; i’d had never felt so inspired in my life by anybody before. i attended Berklee for a bit, and now i play lots of gigs, make money playing guitar, and get to do my own stuff on the side. james and GC can’t even fathom how many guitarists and musicians they’ve inspired with this. i had no friends growing up, music was all i had, and all i did growing up was sit in my room with my $50 yamaha junior size acoustic playing until my fingers were actually bleeding. this video alone did so much for me back then, and even still that holds true now. there will never be another band like metallica. and there will never be anyone like james.
I bet he's rocking out to them loving every minute! I'm sorry for your loss, I can't imagine what it would feel like to lose a child but you are celebrating his life and his memories. I have no clue who you are but you love your kid no matter where he is and that's special. 😊

austin cutty I am not trying to insult the band your fan of, but there is obsolutely nothing Metallica revolutionized as far as sound goes apart from Cliff Burton's way of approaching the bass, the main thing is that they made thrash metal popular, seeing how many thrash metal bands were around in the eighties if they had not done it someone would have, the sixties and seventies were the real revolutionairy days.
It doesn't mean that they would necessarily become a huge metal band. The chemistry wouldn't have been there. Maybe they sucked at songwriting or didn't have ideas. James was destined to meet lars and kirk
One of the if not *the* most humble, kind and genuine heavy metal guitarist/frontmen in the world. I don't care what anyone says about Metallica or Hetfield. James is a stand up guy and Metallica is one of the most influential, inspirational bands of all time. That's a fact!
I had the pleasure of seeing Metallica in May of '86 when they opened for Ozzy, and I was blown away! I got to meet James Hetfield that night, too! Super humble guy. He loves the fans and always makes time for them. Even 37 years later..Metallica still engages with their fans. Great guys, and so well deserving of their success.
i don't know about that. i was a die hard fan right up to the release of their 6th album that I waited forever for. I can remember saying it doesn't matter what metallica releases I will eat it up.. i never even listed to that 6th album to this day. it is so unbelievably bad it is insulting to their fans. and james is ok and I still like him even if he can't write any good music any more. Lars is a piece of trash and I don't understand how anyone can tolerate him. I guess he is better than a drug addict but jesus. I can't think of a bigger pussy i have ever heard of.
Where'd you see that show? I saw that tour. Master. In San Diego. We saw Cliff. Insane huh? I saw em 3 more times by '90. Once with gnr and body count. Was a stadium tour. In the grass. My favorite show out of maybe 35- 40
I was forced to listen to kill em all when it came out. My brother would lock me in his room and play it outside his door until the album was over. I thank him to this day for it. R.i.p. brother.
Not sure who talked abt the timeline shit but while they were doing crap to me under mind control it was mentioned that in othet timelines there was no Metallica. I've been a fan of Metallica since I was 12 (I'm now 47) and even now when I listen to James speak I still think wow, he is just the coolest dude ever.
im 54 listened to kill em all when i was 15 saw them in bradford uk with Anthrax 6 weeks before Cliff died... James had a skateboard accident so they had James Marshall play guitar and James singing.. how the hell did they come up with Maste Of Puppets!
Right?? He is like dave mustaine now (or vice versa if it really matters to you that much). I bet they could both chill over some tea together now as reformed men. despite their previous differences.
Scott M I was never a huge fan of metallica but their personalities crack me up and their good story tellers at that.😂 now I'm slowly getting into them and figuring out their past etc. definitely cliff was a badass and it showed. their blessed to do what they do.
Despite their issues at times, they were always good guys. I went to a live concert shortly after he got burned. They had another guitarist but he was out in his compression bandages doing a show. At the beginning he said he would need a few breaks but we would get a full show. He took a few breaks backstage & a few breaks where he just sat down & told a story but we got a full, long show. That's where he got my respect as a human, you could tell he wasn't going to do just enough show to keep the tour going. He wanted to fans to get 100%.
he was my #1 hero all through school, and i was fortunate enough to meet him and others in '95. he was awesome naturally, but he was still drinking hard - because of cliff, i guess, and he was hard work to communicate with. seeing him now, some 20 plus years later, he seems so the man i wanted him to be back then. MAHOOOOSIVE respect, james. you da man. \m/ x
Love how passionate he is about playing guitar, the way he talks about it is so genuine, such belief in what he feels about music, probably the reason he is so inspirational.
So much more respect for him after watching this. he seems like such a genuine and down to earth guy. Not just some mental metal head that some people imagine him as
+Robbie Wason I absolutely love Metallica, and as such always loved Hetfield the Musician and frontman. I always liked Hetfield the man and individual. UNTIL, I saw the Joe Rogan Podcast with him, now I love him on and off stage. Such a real genuine guy. That podcast gave me the same respect I had for him on stage, off stage as well. I know people who assume he is probably arrogant and a nutjob, and I always point them in the direction of that podcast.
I hate the typical image of metal itself or metal artists, like only crazy assholes who always do drugs and whatever, Metal is just powerful music, and you can use it to speak about whatever the hell you want to use it, and to be a "metalhead" is a bit childish as well as long as the definition of "metalhead" is having metal control your life or just adopt it as a lifestyle.
He actually seems like a regular guy who just happens to enjoy playing very loud metal type music. I’m 76 and I enjoy listening to these guys play.👍👍🇨🇦
Lmao I can imagine James and his old cover bands friends like this, James: here’s this riff I wrote, I call it master of puppets His friends: that’s not really that good, let’s stick to covers.
Same man. It sucks that we lost Eddie, and I'm not even a huge VH fan but I'm mostly grateful for his existence because how many other great musicians wouldn't be here if he hadn't revived rock n roll.
idk if anyone here knows tomoyasu hotei, japanese guitarist, when he was a kid (japan really strict) he was expelled from school for his long hair and replied "Jesus had long hair!"
It was cool to hear the guy I picture when I think of metal type of music (I'm into hard rock and classic rock and can't do the screaming type of metal) mention he wanted to be like EVH. I have loved VH since I was a kid (born in 1980), although my favorite musician is Sammy Hagar (He is still performing damn well for being 73 years old, unlike DLR, but I am a huge fan of the VH albums with Dave) who grew up where I did and still live. To me, it seemed more like VH and Metallica were both at the front of their game, and I assumed similar in age, but that they just were different styles. I didn't think of Metallica as the new guys, but then again I grew up listening to both without knowing much about the bands until the late 90's. They are all iconic guys and bands.
James Hetfield told me how to play guitar 28 years ago through his music. When he is talking about playing guitar he talks right from my heart. When he riffs in this video even more. I watched this video for the 20th time now. I think you need to get older to understand who your inspirations in life was. For me at age 38 one of my biggest influences was him. I dont like everything he did in his career. But i can undestand it. Today i am playing everything from metal to jazz to blues and pop and more. But in my heart i will always play james hetfield rhythm guitar. I never understood soloing. When he says he always was into rhythm guitar i totally agreed and finally i understood. What a great video. I will watch it again and again. I know it
Playing drums on guitar. That’s basically how James sees it. The best rhythm players are very percussive. Soloing only makes sense to me in a short and subtle way, in certain parts of a song where adding a simple embellishment will add to the song and make it better. Too many soloists make it all about themselves instead of actually trying to make the song better. Yes, rhythm is where it’s at for me too.
James seems to be in such a good place in life at the moment. Compared to his younger self he comes through as remarkably humble, warm and genuinely happy about what he's doing. Plus, he looks and sounds like he's been sober for a long time. The earlier self-destructive streak might have produced some really interesting and dark music, but for James as a human being this surely is much healthier.
@@amunra4256 Yeah. I mean the whole rock'n'roll shebang of living fast and dying young has become such a staple, that people tend to forget how it's the byproduct (and a destructive one), not the source of inspiration for highly creative people.

Mature grounded James Hetfield is by far the best version of James Hetfield. There's something very comforting and soothing about listening to him talk about his experiences; sort of like the way listening to a Morgan Freeman narration makes you feel all comfortable and safe.
Turn off his microphone and see how grounded he is.. lol I think James is pretty complicated to be honest.. Has a lot of demons inside he's trying to hold at bay.. Hes an old school type of man "back when men were supposed to be tough." living in a new school type of world where men especially ones in the public eye are meant to be more like Kirk.. In some ways he is embracing that way of being.. Hes a lot calmer than he used to be.. But fire is still burning inside him.

i remember when this video came out, i’ll never forget it. i was going through my “metallica phase” and was just “enjoying playing covers” and i was getting really good; i thought i was just going to keep it a hobby, until i saw this. everything James says is so well thought out and comes straight from the heart, and it’s so inspirational and honest. THIS ALONE, made me want to be a professional guitar player. watching this as a 12 year old kid made me so excited and so inspired and so hopeful; i’d had never felt so inspired in my life by anybody before. i attended Berklee for a bit, and now i play lots of gigs, make money playing guitar, and get to do my own stuff on the side. james and GC can’t even fathom how many guitarists and musicians they’ve inspired with this. i had no friends growing up, music was all i had, and all i did growing up was sit in my room with my $50 yamaha junior size acoustic playing until my fingers were actually bleeding. this video alone did so much for me back then, and even still that holds true now. there will never be another band like metallica. and there will never be anyone like james.

austin cutty I am not trying to insult the band your fan of, but there is obsolutely nothing Metallica revolutionized as far as sound goes apart from Cliff Burton's way of approaching the bass, the main thing is that they made thrash metal popular, seeing how many thrash metal bands were around in the eighties if they had not done it someone would have, the sixties and seventies were the real revolutionairy days.

@@larrywexner4163 My brother said the same thing to our Asst. Principal in High School. The guy laughed his ass off.

@@fendertremolo9793 If that's the path you want to take, 'Y' should be capitalized, and 'Moron' needs its own punctuation.
James downpicking is faster than your alternate picking
nice pic
That’s not much in my case 😂
Hey bro how are things going in hell? Is the Covid-19 there yet ?
Sure
james can beat his meat in one minutes with that downpicking speed
Was devastated when i found out James is going through his relapse, I'm from Australia and couldn't wait to see Metallica play again, he is my inspiration to play guitar too, i haven't seen them since 2008 :( Ill be waiting
Sad to say u won't see metallica playing together anytime soon James left the band couldn't come to. Terms with lars
Yeah man, I had tickets to the Sydney show, I was fllying up from Melbourne. Devastated. But health is more important
mike ford Metallica still has a setlist ready for the next few shows.
@@mikeford6702 shut the fuck up. James is in rehab, has nothing to do with the band or Lars. What are you a 12 year old girl just making shit up to gossip? Grow up
mike ford he’s in rehab. Has nothing to do with Lars lol
When you see the Russian footage of them playing live to over a million people at one time, a crowd so large that multiple military helicopters flew just above them but you couldnt hear them over the cheering, then you get a glimpse of the insanity this man has directed with his music!!!
Absolutely. Not even just Russia, the Soviet Union while it was destabilizing & experiencing violent revolution. Incredible. One of my absolutey favorite pieces of Music history.
"When you're in the zone, the world disappears around you" nothing more true.
Nativgod i had an opposite experience once. i was running through a crowd and i got in the zone and the only way to explain it i was omniscient. like my body moved on its own and i was just watching everything around me in slow motion.
This is how you do an interview, just let the guy talk. Someone as interesting as James doesn't need prompting or interruptions.
Things (prompting and interrupting) that bug the SNOT outta me about American interviewers. XP
@@dropkickmurphy4114 yeah name a country that doesn't have annoying interviews. Tf does America have to do with that? Not a damn thing it was a rhetorical question
Eminem is actually more popular, because he had bigger hit songs than Metallica ever did.
@@matthewhawking4318 not sure the relevance, but you are 100% correct. Eminem also had producers making his songs hits. Hatfield produced his own songs for the first 4 albums, invented a genre of music, and didn't make a video until the 4th album, and even then it was about 9 minutes long. I have a sneaky suspicion Hatfield wasn't going for hit songs, not even as an after thought
@@davidwagstaff47 Sorry I think Cliff wrote the first 4. Yes back was a good album might have been some of his lyrics. After that went to shit. I don't think James had shit to do with lyrics

Make a Jimmy Page at Guitar Center and tell him to stop playing Stairway.
No Stairway? DENIED!
I thought this...imagine an employee strolling up to tell some noob that its not cool to play Enter Sandman in the...Oh.
legoredninja YES YES YES YES
@aw yah Really, no hate on either players but Jimmy was the music of a whole generation. I will take it to my grave.
What a genuinely nice guy.
I almost cried watching this and remembering, really remembering, how much their music helped me as a kid. Luckily, time doesn't have the power to wash it all away. It never will.
Fire up some Metallica and throw the meds away!
Felt the same man...thought my emotions are gone since a long time but this video showed me otherwise.
They peaked at Puppets.
@@JS-yl4pq I've been following them from the time they used to play at the stone as kids
Can relate
James, you’ve been a helping hand in my life with your lyrics and hearing you speak your truth. God bless you man ❤ very proud of you
Imagine being those high school kids in “Obsession” and telling James Hetfield his original songs sucked lol.
James got the last laugh....🤣
I would be that headass fan
Well he probably did suck back then.
@@somefuckindude4236 He never sucked!
@@scottboomer5908 get off his jock dude. Some of their shit still sucks. Alot of its cool tho.
His picking technique is insane. So aggressive and yet he has so much control and the form is compact and clean.
probably because he uses thumb, index finger and middle finger altogether. Combined with monsterous levels of downpicking
He seems very clear-headed, bright-eyed, and well-spoken. Not at all burnt out like you might expect a rocker to be after thousands of shows and countless wild nights!
Agreed and it makes me happy for some reason, I’m not a huge Metallica fan but he seems like a very nice guy
@@Automobiliana Me too. I don't know a lot about Metallica. I'm more into Sepultura, Pantera, Megadeth, Meshuggah.
I text you for a purpose , I have been busy with shows and many more, traveling, thank you for the support and love, I appreciate. I'm looking for someone i can definitely trust
Because he's a virgin, like Dave Grohl, the only 2 that never touched drugs.
His music gave him the only high he needed.
I enjoy a broad range of music, from pop to classical to the dark, heavy stuff. But every so often I come back to Metallica, and I think wow, this is where the music is. And I can't help but be pulled into a multi-day Metallica binge. This man is an absolute gift to the world, as is the rest of the band.
i would like to watch a movie about his life starting from childhood till now...
dgoz33 Play all the albums, close your eyes and ”read between the lines” 😉
I love Metallica, I love James's singing, and I love to hear him talking too. I could listen to him talking for hours. He's such a good person.
Yes , he is very intelligent as well.
James is just effortlessly cool.. thats a big part of his appeal. He's not TRYING to be cool.. he just .. IS.
He should have a podcast
I've never heard him in interviews before. Sounds really nice. Not sure why I'm surprised, though. Glad I listened.
I respect James even more after this, never new he was so straight down to earth and chill.
He has a healthy outlook on life.
It took a lot of emotional pain, desire to change and effort put into it to get to where he is now.
It took some growing up. He explains that in the Black album era they were pretty shit people having let things go to their heads.
I love James's playing style, so emotive. So damn talented
And a solid dude too
