I was 15 when I saw James Hetfield on a photo with this guitar. Kirk had the black/white version. I totally felt in love with these guitars. Perhaps the most exciting guitars I’ve ever seen
My man is an artist. Watching you play Metallica at the end, it's like James overtook your body. You had his posture, looked like his picking hand. Damn.
The picking hand is actually a little different. James is a little unorthodox because he holds the pick with an extra finger for support. Still this guy is a virtuoso no doubt

It cracks me up how they used James Hetfield actual voice from the Kill ‘Em All record, obviously James Hetfield is one of those main guitarists in heavy-metal history that use the Flying V for a little while of his career before switching over to the 1984 Gibson Explorer where his iconic look took shape, but thank you for actually telling the world that he actually played a flying V in his early years of Metallica especially through the Kill ‘Em All to the Ride The Lightning years of Metallica, even though he didn’t exactly have the Gibson Flying V, Electra guitars created an exact replica with their specs
A really cool build, and a LOT of work but.... Sure would love to see this guitar with it's original pickups. Hetfield never put EMG's into his Electra V until probably '86 or '87 at the earliest. It was left at home for the Puppets tour where he switched to EMG's.

This guitar is my no. 1!! In the eighties I bought a white Tokai V and changed I to be like James's! I bashed it up and put on the black pickup rings and gold tone and volume knobs. I even got hold of a Gibson trussrod plate. When I broke the neck I had it repaired but it didn't feel the same anymore. I still regret giving it to a friend of mine. He hung it on the wall in his living room. I now own another white Tokai V and it plays great. I don't know what I would give for a copy like this but damn this is so cool! Greetings from Holland.

Well, not counting paint, hardware and body is pretty cheap. Emgs are can be $100 brand new, tuners, bridges, etc aren’t very expensive. I would say to build it yourself, $400-$500

I genuinely can't believe that the slab of mahogany I had sitting in my room back when this project was underway would turn into something so incredible. I'm eagerly looking forward to doing more. Yes James still uses the original Flying V. That and the EET FUK Explorer were used on Death Magnetic & Hardwired.
The original was a fake Gibson some one sold to him when he was young. I believe Gibson made him a real Gibson replica and thats the one he uses.

That guitar may have EMGs these days but no way it had them back in the day. EMGs came later for Hetfield.

The EMG 85 was released in 1979. So that pickup would have been available at the time Kill 'Em All was released
Pretty sure EMG’s we’re around in 79-80. I remember when they came out. They weren’t quick connect back in the day though.
James did put the EMG pickups in it so he is replicating the guitar as it is now.
