    Great repair video. Hey, Samsung....is this what you want your buyers to go through? You can't seal the ice compartment at the factory???

    Can I just say how much I appreciate all the clear (and tricky) shots you guys got covering all the little details, and with ample lighting. You even put a camera *inside* to show what the auger looks like from behind as you're sliding it in. In particular it was extremely helpful to clearly see the coolant/freon line that was referenced in many other similar videos, but only clearly visible in yours.
    So... Thank you!

    Two useful tips if I may, You don t need to turn off the fridge for one entire day, which is costly for people who own only one fridge. You can wait only 3 hours enough. This is because Dow Corning sealant specs sheet says 118 minutes to cure. Say 3 hours for safety. second, make sure to wipe the gaps with cotton and dry them with COLD air hair dryer because, if you apply sealant on wet gaps it will not stick and peel out. great video though, thumbs up.

    Incredible instructional repair video Ryan. I had succumbed to first defrosting the icemaker section with a Harbor Freight Heat Gun every week followed by buying 10 lbs bags of ice from the local Walmart until I saw this video. I was on the verge of buying a separate ice maker since I like the other features of the Samsung Fridge so much. With your very clear and concise video I was able to first defrost the ice maker chamber with a $14.95 steamer from Walmart. I know you said not to do this but I could not let all my food go to waste by leaving the doors open to defrost for 24 hours and Forced Deforst (DF) doesn't work that well. I've used the heat gun for about 8 months with no exploding freon tubes so the steamer was proposed by a couple of other videos of this matter. After removing the frost build up from the Ice Making Chamber with the water steamer, I cleaned and dried out the compartment followed by applying liberal amounts of SIL-BOND RTV 4500 100% Food Safe Silicone Sealant I purchased on Amazon for $6.95. So for $20.00 I solved the major mistake that Samsung made. Now we have plenty of ice to make our Pina Coladas and other cooling drinks as we stay clear of the Coronavirus. Thanks immensely. The most clear and precise video I have seen on this matter. And I will order from your site when i need items such as the Ice Tray Assembly which upon multiple removals and insertions from heat-gun defrosting, has a few cracks from me forcefully pounding it back into its residence.

    This is the only true solution to this issue. For a long time I looked all over the internet for an answer that made sense on how to fix my ice maker, including all over the Samsung website and all i found was nonsense information, until I came across this tutorial. Kudos to the publisher, I hope many Samsung fridge owners can use this to fix their jammed ice-makers and shame on the Samsung online troubleshooting team wich has no knoledge of the product they are dealing with.

    Thanks for video. I did not use Silicone for mine I used white gorilla tape along the seam on the outside of the ice box (left bottom, back, and up the right rear of the ice box). It has been a couple of weeks and I have no frost in the ice box! Reason I chose not to do the silicone is because I didn't have another refrigerator to store my food. The tape method took 10 minutes to do from start to finish.

    • @marksickmiller
      @marksickmiller 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Robert, I was thinking of doing it this way too. What type of Gorilla tape did you use?

    • @MrKlumZ
      @MrKlumZ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used electrical tape. You can buy a white version of the tape online or local hardware store. However, I’m using the black one to “test” if this method works. Taped all around the outside of the ice maker. Top, sides, bottom, etc. If the tape method works, I will be removing the tape and using silicone to finish the outside of the ice maker.

    I am so thankful that I came across this video.
    I completed the ice house fix, and the I've maker had been working flawless for over two weeks now. I haven't had this thing working right for years now, so I am thrilled!
    I did a couple of things differently however. I did not unplug my fridge. I did the force defrost, and then disassembled the ice maker and removed the motor. I also added sealant to every seam I saw, like on the back wall along the bottom, and on the top left and right.
    I let the silicone dry for 40 hours before reassemble, since it was drying at a lower temperature.
    It has worked perfectly! I couldn't be happier. It's worth adding, if you're handy the whole thing, minus the drying time, will take less then an hour.
    Good luck.

    Wow. Just wow. I have been getting quotes of $500 to fix this with no guarantee. Thank you so much. I will definitely buy parts from you if needed. Update Oct 2023. 3 years later I have not had to defrost my freezer once after doing this. Before I was defrosting the freezer every couple of months. This did the trick. The silicon sealing of the gaps worked.
    Update: April 2024. This worked for about 3 years and not the ice maker is icing up again. I suppose I need to do this again. I will give it another try and see how it works again. I suppose the silicon has become detached in some areas maybe? I don't know yet. I had the ice maker freeze up twice in 3 weeks and it has not iced up in over 3 years so something is going on. I am still investigating the cause.

    Extremely helpful and great camera work. It made it easy to go into unexplored territory.
    I would like to add that while you have the fridge away from the wall go around to the back and with the same silicone, seal around the electric wires and tubing that enter at the top area of the fridge directly behind where the ice maker is. Hot air from the back area between the wall and the fridge can leak in through the gaps around the holes where those wires go into the housing. If it happens ahain, I will try sealing along the top right edge as well. Ijust read that from one of the other comments. Also, when orderingvthe silicone from Amazon, be advised to ask for white or clear. Mine was black when it arrived. No matter though. No one will see it.
    Robert

    I did the repair but did it was fast and dirty. Tried the forced defrost but it did very little defrosting. I ended up using hair dryer (which your not supposed to do). I left all food in place and just took apart the ice maker compartment. I sealed it up inside and outside with a standard silicone. I used a flashlight and could see the gaps that had developed. Didn't wait for it to dry, just put it back together. It took about an hour and than I just plugged it back up. I wasn't really expecting it to work but so far it seems fixed. It used to freeze up every 10 days, but its been 7 weeks since the repair and its working great again. Another little tip. If its hard pulling out your frig to unplug it, just find the circuit breaker and turn it off. I waited to do the repair as I've read where it didn't work for a lot of people. In my case it worked great. Also if it makes a difference, mine worked fine for the 1st four years that we had the frig and than all of a sudden it just started freezing up.

    Nicely filmed and explained, and I followed those instructions to the letter some two years ago. Trouble is, it didn't work despite multiple applications of sealant. Nowadays the ice maker freezes up in a matter of a few weeks, requiring the FD and careful manual removal of the built up ice at intervals dictated by the refrigerator, not by me. In truth, it didn't make a lot of sense that a little sealant along the interior edges would be sufficient to keep out moisture--lots more moisture can easily enter the ice maker via the hopper port. Next refrigerator is definitely not a Samsung or any other with that type of ice maker.

    Hi, thank you so much for taking the time and effort to produce such a detailed and well explained video. I had ice buildup after the auger motor and icemaker were replaced under warranty. Both units were replaced a second time under warranty because of same reason. In my case, the auger motor fan's plug was rusted because of the ice. One of its tiny fragile plugs broke off because of rust. I replaced both plugs (male and female) from one of the older auger motors, but leaving enough new cable length to route it upwards, away from the bottom part where the ice starts to build. Together with this easy fix using the adhesive sealant, I have seen no ice buildup in the ice maker. Kudos for the great video!

    • @LordPBR
      @LordPBR ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DadaIorian yes it has. Sad to inform ice started to build up once again. The ice maker drain, which drains through the auger motor, is frozen. A single ice stalactite then formed from the ice maker drain down to the bottom of the chamber, creating a frozen layer of water between the ice cubes compartment and the bottom of the chamber, sealing it in place. Difficult to know at this moment why it started to build ice up again, it's totally sealed with the special sealant. I also replaced the ice chute gasket as well with a new one. Starting to suspect problem might be further away, either at the front (ice chute flapper not sealing properly), or at the back.
      I'm trying to figure out a way to confirm if the fan abkve the auger motor is running or not. Regretfully it automatically stops once you open the door and it's super silent. I know that when this fan isn't working, ice builds up. So getting information whether it's running or not is crucial to determine the cause of this ice build-up.

      @DadaIorian ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LordPBR Thank you for responding! It's quite frustrating as I did a similar fix and I continue to have more ice buildup.

  • @rcinfla9017
    @rcinfla9017 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Looks like there are several band-aid fixes. 1) New auger motor assembly revised with heated drain tube and new muffin fan. 2 ) Y-clips on cooling tube to induce defrosted water on cooling tube to drip at rear side over collection drain. 3) make sure refrig levelling has front slightly higher then back of refrig to encourage defrost water on cooling tube to run to rear where Y-clips help defrosted water to drip over collection drain.
    I also believe that a timed tray water fill is going to be problematic. Greater water pressure will yield possible overfill of tray. I backed down on my incoming water valve to reduce flow rate which fixed ice maker freeze up but slowed the front water dispensing to unacceptable slow rate. Also, minerals in water can build up in tray causing ice chips and frost to stay stuck in tray, resulting in less tray volume for water refill resulting in overflow of tray. Carbon filter may help reduce mineral build up.

    I did it, and while opening I discovered that ice clogged the tunnel under the fan, in the Styrofoam between the fan and the cooling body. My guess is that this caused the fan not to circulate internal air, but to suck more leaking air from the outside, and caused more ice to be generated.

      @PartsDr  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John, putting the sealant on the inside of the ice maker compartment is how the manufacture recommends to do it. From using the adhesive ourselves we found it runnier than a standard silicone adhesive most people are used to. If you tried to apply this silicone on the outside it would probably just run down and not seal very well. We think that this also helps it seal better when used on the inside of the compartment as the sealant will seep into the cracks causing a better seal.

    As many others have said, this is an amazing and helpful video. Thanks! I do have a question.
    Two or three times I've had ice damming on the right side of the ice maker causing the ice maker to stop working. I've used a long kitchen knife to chop out the ice, but after leaning in your video that any damage to the ice maker destroys the fridge that will not be my approach to repair ever again.
    Is the gap that you filled with sealant the only cause of ice build-up? If not, can't you check for the gap with a flashlight as you did after just removing the wire housing cover so you know whether or not to continue with the disassembly?

Is it doable to seal the ice maker box from outside? I'm gonna see first if there are gaps by flashing light. If yes, I will try to seal from outside by squeeze stuff like cloth into the gap. Update July '24: I have a fridge from 2015 that was already in the house, so I don't have any receipts nor was I the original purchaser. Contacted Samsung on their website via customer support chat and requested service. They arranged for a tech to come out and replace everything, including a new motherboard, for no charge. It was done yesterday. We'll see if it actually fixes the problem. I don't want to take business away from Parts Dr., but if you're watching this video, try contacting Samsung. The tech told me their company does 50+ of these repairs a week.
    Did this 1 yr ago, worked for a while, now ice buildup again. I have the older ice maker and no "Y" clips (see his other videos about Samsung ice maker problems), so going to make those 2 upgrades and see if that prevents this problem from recurring. (edit - it can take many hours for the ice to melt enough to remove the auger motor assembly, even with fans and low heat)

    The best way to fix this problem is to not buy one with an ice maker in the fridge. The design on this one is poor, it needs an additional 1-2 inches of space where the ice flips out of the maker and drops, this will help prevent hang-ups. BTW, I just replaced mine today....Real easy after watching the video; And the ONLY reason I own this thing is because my wife loves the drawers and she doesn't use ice, so I'm screwed, however my 26 year old Sears side-by-side in the basement is still working great and have been using it to make the ice that I transfer to the Samsung...

      Tino,
      So you and I are asking same question. What do we do for 24 to 48 hours when spoiling food, crying kids and eating out are not options...
      Note the comment above from Charles Alleyne regarding the Amazon silicone.
      If you don't want to go with the cheaper Amazon one (we all have our prefs), Home Depot has some low VOC (bad vapors), food grade, cold application (like in freezers), and it has high flexibility. I think most silicone would do, but food grade/low VOC are requirements.
      Here's a link (and I don't work for them) www.homedepot.com/p/Everkem-10-1-oz-100-Silicone-Sealant-in-Clear-T100C/304577581
      Free ship to store and if you spend over $45, free ship to home.
      Ironically, this is more expensive on Amazon by a bit.
      I plan to just remove the ice components and carefully use a hair dryer to warm things up, wipe it down with some safe cleaner first (rubbing alcohol I think), then seal it up.

      It’s Samsung’s instructions. I do this for a living and have at least a 100+ of this repair and I seal from the outside in to impregnate the seams. It’s crystal clear so you can’t see it and your blocking the air from the fridge getting in so makes more sense. However there’s a load more to this repair now than just sealing the room. You have clips, a new main control board an updated ice maker and a drain tube for the auger Assy along with fill tube location clearance.But if you go the whole route you should find the information on what kit with what fridge and date it was made or you’ll get the wrong control.

      Hi Alex, putting the sealant on the inside of the ice maker compartment is how the manufacture recommends doing it.

    I can’t seem to get the motor/auger out. I can get the clip to pop up but is it supposed to stay popped up? I don’t know if it’s still frozen in the back but my motor won’t budge even if i can manage to hold the locking clip up with one hand and pull with the other?

      It is most likely frozen in place. Try leaving the doors open with the refrigerator unplugged to let it thaw out before removing it. Make sure to not use any heat sources like a blow dryer as it will warp the plastic and can ruin the refrigerator.

      That was the hardest part for me. That’s what I had to do- while propped up with a screwdriver, used a finger to nudge it forward a bit. It took several tries and a lot of bad language.

    I can not find the force defrost function at all. I've looked all over the interwebs and no combination of buttons brings up the menu.

    Why do not seal gaps outside ice box? I mean, instead of removing the ice maker and motor, just use sealant for gaps visible from the side of the refrigerator.

    • @PartsDr
      @PartsDr  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John, putting the sealant on the inside of the ice maker compartment is how the manufacturer recommends doing it.

    Do you have any suggestions or ideas regarding an ice maker ( bottom ) on our Samsung mdl # RFG298HDRS. It has stopped making ice. Is there a reset button?

    • @PartsDr
      @PartsDr  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a button the on bottom of the freezer ice maker that will usually make the ice maker cycle (dump the ice tray and fill up with water). Most of the time the ice maker itself is usually bad if it's not making ice.

    I have a four door flex and the freezer+lighting combo doesn't work. There is no energy button. Could it be something else?

    • @PartsDr
      @PartsDr  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris, it could be something else. Samsung can use different combinations for each model refrigerator. If you figure it out please reply with a comment letting us know which model refrigerator you have and which button combination worked for you.

    How can you do this if you have a freezer full of food?

      Put your food in some coolers with ice?

      I did the repair but did it was fast and dirty. Tried the forced defrost but it did very little defrosting. I ended up using hair dryer (which your not supposed to do). I left all food in place and just took apart the ice maker compartment. I sealed it up inside and outside with a standard silicone. Didn't wait for it to dry, just put it back togather.

      @@benmironmd Can you provide the path you took to have Samsung to accept and do the replacement? Was it by email or phone? If yes, was was the phone number or email address or online customer support. How did the conversation go that qualified you for the repair? I know it's a lot of questions, but I think a lot of us would like to know and it would be helpful.

    Why not put a seal on the outside?

    • @PartsDr
      @PartsDr  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      From our observations, the sealant seems to be a lower viscosity that uses gravity to pull it down into the seams and help it seal better.
