    Some people are willing to spend that much money because it’s difficult to get at retail. NOT because of the complications or the material it’s made out of.

      @Dorian Phoenix That's like saying $200 worth of paint and canvas for an art piece. The value comes from craftmanship, history, and design, most of all, appreciation.

    • @franciscolee3890
      @franciscolee3890 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Dorian Phoenix You are very mistaken. Most of the components are hand finished. A single watch can take 9months to sometimes years to finish. That is why it is always low on stock, and the resale price is like 5times the retail price on certain models.

      @Dorian Phoenix The Royal Oak design is a solid design. It looked futuristic/modern in 1973, and it looks ahead of it's time for 2022. I'll give AP that much credit for crating something that's classic and timeless. It's bad enough perpetual calendar movements are very delicate and easy to damage. However, AP movements (basic although highly decorated) are crap, too delicate. The framework and DNA of AP movements are JLC. The modification AP does ruins the reliability of the movement. They ought to let JLC modify the movements as well as decorate them. That way you will get your moneys worth. Service cost $1500 just to get it regulated or demagnetized. Over $2k for a full service and not just any watch maker can get AP parts. You need to take it in to a local AP AD. Any knocks or bumps you will throw off it's poor accuracy. AP is a one trick pony. They do not deserve to be part of this so called holy trinity of watch making when they put all their eggs into Royal Oaks. F**K AP! For the same money a mid level A Lange or Patek makes AP look like cheap Invicta shitters. I owned a Royal Oak before the hype and never again. Sold it, should of held on to it a few more years just to flip for a nice profit. It looks nice in a collection but too weak for casual use.

    Gorgeous photography and elegant dialogue as always, Jenni. A big thank you to Kurt Klaus who was commissioned by IWC in 1985 to simplify the extremely complicated watch setting you showed us here to a single pusher, so that some modern perpetual calendars including my Jaeger Grande Reveil perpetual calendar, which is also accurate to 2100, can be set without the possibility of showing day, date, month and year combinations that don't actually exist.

    Absolute stunning watch. I think that AP has the nicest rose gold. This perpetual calendar in such a thin watch is very impressive. Each case and bracelet go through the longest detailed finishing of all the luxury watches. There just aren't enough of these to go around. Tho I would prefer a titanium version, a watch I could wear every day. Gold is a bit over the top for me, but it seems like everyone is being more comfortable in wearing gold. Probably because a lot of stainless steel watches are worth as much if not more.

But.. really.. let's face it and repeat along with me: absolutely no watch is worth 300k. We pay it because we're stupid. Looks good feels bad, for me at least. And gold is even heavier. The bracelets r very nice. I could buy one, but I would never spent that amount of money. I only buy steel. Now I can’t buy any watch new, because my source died at the age of 83 and as „new“ buyer I won’t get a Rolex or ap anyway.

      a single troy oz of gold is worth $1930. That's just over 30g of gold. This watch weighs in at 254g, at 18kt gold. Even at a basic estimate, there could be up to 5oz of gold, which would make the raw materials of nearly $10k. The amount of time to hand build this watch, takes over 20x more than a Rolex day-date. AP does not sell this watch at $300k. It's that they can't make enough of them to go around that people don't mind paying more for one. A daytona in steel with almost NO finishing at all in the movement, is trading at nearly 60k. The raw materials in that certainly don't come up to $200.

    Neat watch and entertaining review, but I gots questions about that 'smaller apartment' business. $300,000 USD buys a HUGE house here in town and/or a nice place out in horse (cattle) country here in the Ozarks. Can. not. quite. wrap. my. head. around. it.

      I think a couple of people have misunderstood...I'm not saying it's worth 3k, I'm saying that even if it was priced at 3k (which would be significantly under its true value I agree) I still wouldn't be interested in it. I don't like the design, I don't like the modern connotations of the brand, it's just not for me. I can think of plenty of watches which I'd prefer to have on my wrist, and they just so happen to be considerably cheaper.
