I absolutely love your reviews! In my book you are #1 on TH-cam for delivery and making me just LISTEN! Thank you! Just swapped out a stock G12E-60 for a G12 Vintage 30. The Vintage 30 is twice as loud and has lots of bite!
Man im on the verge of getting a harley benton 4x12 with 2 V30s and 2 Greenbacks in it. I think this video made it final that im getting that mix, i loved how it sounded when blended
The vintage 30 and greenback used to be my favorite speakers for years, until I got an alnico cream Celestion, and now I rarely use anything else. Very different than the ceramic creamback ones. I will occasionally mix it with a vintage 30, but I agree with your opinion on the greenback. It always sounds like it has more fizz in it to me, whereas the vintage 30 has a more balanced growl. But the Alnico Cream just has the widest dynamic range and pleasing tone to me.
Awesome shootout. Both is right, though if it had to be only one: V30. The Plexi with Greenback is a great example of what I like them for, that snotty, almost punk-attitude. Creambacks are great for this too. For my Orange Rocker Head, and maybe later a Plexi head, I'd like to try an Orange closed back 4x12 with a pair Vintage V30s, with Creamback H75s or Creamback EVOs. Like Zilla had a build of recently. Creambacks tighten up the bass nicely, and are a bit smoother than Greenbacks on the highs. And the V30s bring the midrange forwardness and vocal quality.
Both are awesome in their own flavor. Nolly did a massive comparison of V30s of all kinds. It’s such a unique speaker. I have a pair of Mesa V30s (UK made) with UK GB’s in a Germino cab and it’s my favorite 4x12 right now. I’d love for you to add some UK Mesa V30s and 80/90s UK V30s to this comparison mixture.
Bruh!! Your English is GREAT!! My opinion; the V30 (especially when driven hard) has this upper mid sizzle nasal sound that I just can’t seem to dial out. I like the mix tho. I really like the EVH12 Celestion (which is like the heritage GB). I find it more organic and pushes into distortion nicely. I like mixing the SM57 and Cascade Fathead ribbon too! Do you have a favourite mic combination? Thank you for your wonderful content!🇨🇦
Euge, I guess it depends on what sound you are going for with these two different speakers because they both sound great, although quite a bit different. If I had to pick a cabinet loaded with only one of these, it would be the Vintage for my taste. One thing that caught my ear in the instrumental you wrote was the fantastic bass line - it's a killer!
Awesome comparison... old video I know but my 2cents though, don't mic the greenback the same way you mic a typical V30. I find it has a completely different sweet spot almost always. In the room it never sounds harsh to me compared to a smooth V30 like it does in this video.
Excellent Video Euge!, I recently switch out the stock speakers in my EVH 5150 III 50 watt 2x12 cabinet with a EVH ( G12M ) and Celestion Mesa V-30, Big difference and one of my favorite cabinets now! Very cool video and nice comparison, Thanks!
This is a very interesting comparison.. both speakers are awesome .. they sounded great blended .. probably the vintage for me by itself but it's a tough choice as they are both very useful.. I have two Marshall 4x12 cabs .. one with g12t 75s and the other with the vintage.. I've never actually compared them separately .. lol .. thanks Euge .. great playing by you .. 🤙.. regards from New Zealand
Dude, thank you! This is a great comparison! I've always been curious about the sound of the Marshall Vintage speaker, as it's supposedly much different sounding than the modern V30. Thanks for all the time you put into these videos! Always interesting and informative.
Another great comparison by Euge. Love the tone you get from the greenback. I agree that the tone you get from them is not smooth, it's rather aggressive and, imo, the good kind of nasty. Such a good alternative for the v30. I really like tone you got with the Marshall vintage speaker too, I like that way more than I do the normal v30. Again, great stuff dude.
Blended is the perfect tone. I know a lot gonna disagree. But that tone has a wide range. You can go from the blues and classic rock to eighties evh al the way to modern metal. I love that thump from the greenbacks when you lower the mids and the scream from the vintage when you raise the mids.
Great comparison, you can clearly hear the differences listening on T7V's. Both are quite different but sound fantastic. The V30 clearly is much more mid focussed, and the Greenback is more rounded but still with a clear mid and top end. I was surprised that the GB had a more defined bottom end, the V30 seems to attenuate those frequencies. The V30 cuts better for the solo in the mix. Listening to the V30 by itself, if you are not in a band or recording with it, would get pretty tiring, and even in a band situation you could EQ the mids on a Greenback to make them pop a bit more. That being said, I still like the EVH / Heritage better than the 25w GB personally. The mix you did was awesome - sounds brilliant.
I am 😎. My main work in the last few years has been mixing but lately I’ve been also recording & producing. Just a few weeks ago I had a Finnish metal band in my studio which I produced & recorded and will start to mix the album soon 🤟.
I own a stock 1960BV. I'm thinking of modding it by swapping one of the speakers with a T-75, and another with a Greenback. I wanna use the V+T75 side for rhythm, and the V+G side for clean & lead. The speakers that I remove will be going into isocabs. The tough part is I can't really test it before buying the speakers. Best I can do is watch videos like these, then try the Two Notes Wall of Sound simulations. Hopefully I don't throw money away 😂
Wish you would do a comparison between the celestion G12 C and your favorite V30, the G12C is a greenback with a celestion blue cone came factory in the vintage modern series as well as the reissue Hendricks stack the G12C is an astonishing High gain bloom start with a Marshall Lead 20 through a pair of G12C These are low watt paper voice coils but definitely the sweetest high gain bloom!
Ciao Euge, love your channel man! I have 2 Greenback 20w G12M Heritage series, was thinking of putting in a 2 x 12 cabinet, or would you recommend maybe put in a 4 x12 in cross config with V30's? They are very different wattages obviously. I have 4 x 12 Randall cabinet with Seventy 80's and Peavey 6505 4 x 12 with shitty sheffield 1200's. Appreciate your advice/expertise.
I'm assuming the EQ remained the same. Almost seems as if the EQ on the amp was favoring the V30s. I bet the GB could have been dialed in separately with different settings for a better tone. Thank you as always.
The Vintage sounds better for that scoped middle eq sound, particularly for your style. The greenbacks are best for less compression in the distortion. Think ACDC with boosted midrange for that rock growl.
thanks for your advice long time ago, I've taken the 4x12 1960vintage Marshall cab and could not be more satisfied, it pairs so well with all my amps (EVH5150III, DSL20 and PRS MT15)
The celestion is much more brighter than the compressed marshall one. Have you ever try out the G12K 85 watts 16 ohm? For getting a Malcolm Mitchell Young sound I swear by it. Greetings from lower saxony, Germany.
Yeah and that’s the beauty of different speakers. I don’t think any amp has. Speakers part of the overall sound (if we take out the player) is around 70-80% and I see people changing amps and spending lots of money whereas the solution is usually just a different speaker. And the miking affects the sound a lot too; the sound is drastically different if you use for example dynamic SM57 or a ribbon mic. But in general speaker & cabinet affects the tone much more than an amplifier.
Direct quote from Celestion: ”There was a period during the early 1970s when occasionally we’d run out of green to make the rear cans for the G12M and G12H speakers. Those are really cool, and sound great in many situations/applications. I love mixing them with V30s, like people do the Greenback/V30 cabs. But they are very different voiced speakers.
Great video Euge! I might have missed it in the video. But do you think that due to their low wattage the Greenbacks are more suitable for playing at low volumes? I'm thinking of getting a Marshall 1x12 or maybe 2x12 cab and slapping Greenbacks in the cab for my JVM410H that I attenuate with St.Rock at home. Cheers! PS. Nice Dimebag inspired runs!
Thanks! Yeah it does. I’ve recorded several albums with many different cabs and Mesa is really tight whereas Marshalls have a bit more ”woodier” tone which I like a lot too. They’re classics for a reason 😎.
The 20 watt heritage Greenback is a much smoother sounding speaker than the standard issue 25 watt Greenback . The 20 watter has more lower mids and less upper mids with a smoother top end compared to the 25 watt greeny . The vintage Greenback was a smoother and warmer speaker with woody low mids . The Herrtage Greeny is based on the origianl design the mid 60s. The modern Greenback G12M25 is voiced differently from a vintage Greenback. Its voiced to be a bit more aggressive and modern with more bite and cut .
Goddamn I love me some greebacks. I got a Friendman Cab with Greebacks a couple years ago and I havent looked back. The greeback with the plexi sounded sick. These two blended sound great, but the Greebacks are king shit - like a bulldozer ;-)
Amps have usually ohm switch in the back. 16 ohm speakers sound a bit different than 8 ohms but not much. The important thing is that all speakers must have the same ohm in the cab. If you use a 16 ohm cab you set the ohm switch on the amp to 16 etc.
Thanks a lot. Would you say that the Greenback would be a better fit in a 1x12 cab ? Maybe it would bring more bottom end and "fullness" than the V30 on its own ?
Greenback’s power handling is only 25 watts so I wouldn’t necessarily use it in 1x12 but something more powerfull just in case 😎. The Vintage is rated for 70 watts.
Both speakers sounded great, and very different. I generally like the sound of Greenbacks, but compared to the Vintage, they sounded a bit muffled and indistinct. If I had to choose between the two, I'd probably pick the Vintage on Friday, and the Greenback on Saturday. You're right to choose both, and they combined beautifully with each other with the Bad Boy. Thanks
I like them both but i think the GB is a hair better and has the classic midrange tone that is known for. V30s are better for modern high gain while GBs are more versatile to me Sick playing ftw
All Creambacks are made in England . Their production never shifted to China . Their production is and always has been in the UK. There are no Chinese made Creambacks . I see people getting ripped off all the time paying a premium for used Creambacks because they think they are made in China and were only made in the U.K for a short time before prodcution shifted to China or that Uk made creambacks are only produced at special request for Amp builders . I have seen guys selling Creambacks on Reverb for more money than they cost brand new anf justify it by saying this is a rare made in England Creamback and claiming they were only made in the UK for the first year or so then production shifted to China . Some people dont understand that not every model sifted Production to China . Some people thought the whole company moved there and there was no more UK made celestions . Some people were just ripping people off preying on newbies and the less informed .. Guys were charging several hundred dollars for a used Creamback . One guy had his listed at 300 dollars U.S and acted like it was a steal because other sellers were charging more .
I kept rewinding and listening to you chug on the greenback at 7:31. The sound is killer.
Can’t believe I slept on this for the past year. What a great video well done amazing playing.
Man, I love your channel , it's exactly up my alley
Glad to hear it! Thanks!
my 2 cents : the greenbacks sounds more rock'n'roll, the vintage sounds more metal.
Great comparison and stellar playing !
Indeed. Thanks!
19:28 I normally much prefer a well broken in greenback to a v30 but your vintage marshal is nice! Not fizzy like many of the new Chinese v30s

Very good comparison. I enjoy the way you show the tone examples in a hard rock/ metal context.
Thanks!

Love that ADA preamp!
Pfffuuuu juicy thick riffs! Very awesome video again! Would love to see a comparison between Marshall G12 Vintage and a Celestion Creamback M65.
Learned a lot on this one
Glad to hear!
I love greenbacks for rhythm work and always use v30s for lead... I play a few marshalls been thinking about pulling the trigger on a sv20h
🤟
excellent comparison, thanks for doing this
Glad to hear! Thanks!
Just recorded a track with Recto/6505 into Mesa v30 and Greenback mixed. It was glorious.
Cool!

I have 2 greenbacks and 2 Vin 30's in my cab its tight and focused and can handle a lot of dirt thrown at it !!!!
💪🤟

Own the Slash Signatur Cab with 4x12 Marshall Vintage. All original. With my Jvm410 Head or Amp1 Iridium and Les Paul Axcess it is a dream.
I have an old 1275T made in UK, I would like greenbacks that are older and V30 as well just to get variation as well.
👌
Both sound great , the Green seem to smooth the rough edges of the notes ( not like a wet blanket thing , but smooths it ) nice
Euge, you would make kick ass producer of your self

Hi! Nice comparison! Is the Vintage speaker from after 2020?
Thanks! Yes.
Get celestion BLACKbacks from the 70s ac/dc, kiss, evh used them. Also Master effects made a dimebag randall preamp pedal called VULGAR , get one soon

Can you compare the amp with the Silver Jubilee or, as I said, with the JCM 800, I ordered it.
Cheers, David
I have had the combo 900. Sounds really good.
It’s a Marshall so can’t go wrong with one 😎. Quite different than a good ol’ 800 but does the job just fine. I like the primal roar of 800 more.
Did you try g12h30 speaker before? I use those and I love them!

Yeah they break up a bit earlier 👌. Thanks!
It's hard to tell with all that heavy distortion
Great speaker videos. Do you think the cab itself has much to say the differance...vs say a mesa oversized cab? I guess you have tried that before :)
Thanks! Yeah it does. I’ve recorded several albums with many different cabs and Mesa is really tight whereas Marshalls have a bit more ”woodier” tone which I like a lot too. They’re classics for a reason 😎.

@Euge Valovirta please, are you using a pedal to obtain that saturated valve tone or your amp tolerates that amount of gain and still sounds great ?
SD-1 usually
Glad the bad boy is back from the scratch list and on the 1st line center ice and ready to ground n pound!!!🤟🤟😝😝🤟🤟

Amps have usually ohm switch in the back. 16 ohm speakers sound a bit different than 8 ohms but not much. The important thing is that all speakers must have the same ohm in the cab. If you use a 16 ohm cab you set the ohm switch on the amp to 16 etc.

Def oldies - wider softer sound - the new ones are more clinical / tight / thin. Vintage is 1 dimensional.

V30s are better for modern high gain while GBs are more versatile to me

The greenback has a kind of hollow sound to it. I'm not really into it. The V30 is lurrrrvleyyyy.
