I'm a 65 year old powerlifter and I broke my left humerus mid shaft while doing squat lock outs with 625 lbs. It was a freak accident when I tried to place the bar back in the rack, I push my elbow forward too hard and my humerus broke. I'm 10 days post surgery and I'm feeling much better except for being hot all the time! I've already had 1 rehab session which really helped get the blood flowing in the arm. Hopefully, I'll be back to light training in 3 months! If you read this, I hope your recovery is speedy and pain free!💯🫡

3 months After my second cervical disc fusion surgery in my neck, i fell of a ladder and broke my humerus bone. The top round part that goes into the shoulder broke off and shattered in 4 pieces. The worst pain in my life! Another surgery with 11 screws and a plate 4 months later im getting better. Not able to stretch and sleep on my side was tough but will get better! Blessings to all!

My humerus fractured into two parts four months ago, necessitating surgery. I was armeressle with a friend when I had a sudden fracture. The doctor corrected it with internal fixation, and I began working out again after two months, quickly regaining my muscles. I broke my right humerus 5 months ago during a friendly arm wrestling match against a friend so to help anyone that may find thenselves in a similar situation a I gonna give some advice about what helped me through this.
    First couple of months:
This is the hardest part, basically you can't use your arm for anything and can't do anything to speed up de recovery but keep calm. This will be the worst and you just need to eat well, rest and lift the arm with a pillow during your sleep to help to reduce the edema.
After a month it will be wise to take extra protein, calcium and vitamin D.
    Casket removal:
Probably aftee the 2-3 months your arm will be free and you will find out that you have lost a lot of muscle mass and movility. Take your time, contact with a physician and begin rehabilitation. Week after week you will improve but don't rush it.
    4 months:
This is the moment in which depending of your age and diet the bone may be ready for some very lite work out. Begin slowly and with biceps motions keeping your arm below your shoulder and a straight wrist. Listen to your body and stop at any pain or significant disconfort (a slight disconfort is normal). Again, don't try to rush it. Keep the weight very light and do slow controled movements. The point is to carefully accostum your arm to aplying force again.
    5-6 months:
At this point, with a good diet (Ca 2+, vitamin C, protein, etc) you will appreciate an good inprovement in strengh. This is the point I'm currently in, so I can't advise you further ahead. I'm just gonna say that total recovery is a long proccess for up to a year so don't stop training, eat well, rest and be patient. At this point your everyday life will be totally normal and you should focus on improving everyday.
Just to clarify, even when you were unable to use your arm, remember that you still have another one and two legs. Train them. The testostero and increased blow flow generated will help you recover faster and even prevent to some extend the atrophy of the injured arm.
Stay safe and keep calm.❤ You will get out of there with a cool scar (although you can erase to some extend if you want) to brag about.

A good way to sleep is to sleep on your back in an elevated position as gravity would help to keep the arm stable and not have the bone bend from the little bit of room the break allows for. You can either sleep in a reclining chair or put a couple bricks or books under the feet of your bed (only at the front). Get your arm stabilized with perhaps a pillow beneath it and then sleep. It'll be tough to stay on your back but whenever you wake up make sure you fall asleep on your back again.

I broke my humerus at the top end of the shaft... a simple break. Dr said no surgery was necessary & to take it out of the sling and move it as much as possible. Ordered 18 weeks of physio. Happened during Covid and it was difficult to get to the physio's office. Neighbor who is a physio gave me a pulley exercise piece of equipment and advised me on progressive exercises to help speed my recovery. I also turned to TH-cam for advice on exercises. Swift recovery, about 6 weeks. Most difficult thing I dealt with during recovery was trying to wash my hair in the shower!

Updating for anyone who might find this helpful in the future.
It has been about a year and a half after breaking my arm. On the first surgery titanium plate with eight screws was inserted. I had radial nerve palsy (i.e. wrist drop) and took eight months to totally recover from it. Week by week, month by month I was seeing slight improvement. My bone was completely healed after four months, started working out after 8-9 months with no more than six or seven kilograms on my injured arm, as heavier would cause pain, probably because plates were still there.
After a year and three months from injury, I did another surgery for plate removal. The rehabilitation process was much easier and faster than the first surgery. I was feeling no pain after about four days. But there was one problem, which was radial nerve palsy (again). To be specific, I had no problems with moving my hand before the second surgery, the issue only occurred right after the operation. I started physiotherapy where I was doing exercises, electrical stimulation, phonophoresis, and massages. One month after all these treatments I had zero results.
I was advised to do an electromyogram for diagnosing an injury. They said that the radial nerve was badly damaged and compressed. The only thing I could do to repair it was neurosurgery. The complete rehabilitation will take another twelve to eighteen months.
This complication was caused by the mistake and carelessness of a surgeon. So, if you are in the same situation, pick a doctor who more is responsible and experienced.

@@ethancollier4875 The wrist drop almost never lasts for just a day. Even in the minor injury of the nerve, it can take 1-3 months before full mobility of the wrist and fingers are returned. One month ago I had surgery of nerve reconstruction for radial nerve. The surgeon had to cut the nerve and sew it back together so recover would be possible. I've already started physiotherapy and full rehabilitation takes up to year and a half. So I am not sure why you think that there is nothing I can do about it.

I had a mid shaft fracture in December, no surgery needed as it aligned well with a brace. The brace was taken off after 8 weeks. The bone did not heal until 5 months. I am still working on mobilising the shoulder and progress is slow but sure. At 4 months I had a callus at the top part of the fracture but not at the bottom. I became very strict with my diet at that point, no alcohol, caffeine, increased my calcium and protein intake, vitamin C, E, D, K2. This made a big difference as the bone finally healed. Pain was minimal as long as the advise was followed. I had to be patient with use and progress but it paid of as my arm feels a lot stronger after 5 and a half months and I am back at work which is manual. One thing I learned is that there are no short cuts with recovery!

I fell off my horse and broke my humerus mid-shaft. They sent me home from the ER with just a small cloth sling and it took 4 days to get in to the fracture clinic. They put a weighted cast on it for a couple weeks which killed my shoulder. After that it was a clamshell which was way better. Tried to treat it conservatively and waited 6 months until finally the referral to a surgeon came. Another month of waiting for surgery. I was so excited to finally be done with it I wasn’t even nervous about surgery, which was my first time ever even being admitted to a hospital. Recovery from surgery was more painful than I expected but worst was my shoulder pain from not being able to lift my arm for 7 months! I’m still dealing with that pain long after my arm healed! I wish they would’ve operated MUCH sooner. Had a wonderful surgeon 👨‍⚕️. I was so thankful to get it done before COVID hit. I don’t think I could’ve managed much longer with that arm 🥴

2 years now after the surgery, if someone has doubts ask me. 40 days without felling my arm and hand after the surgery, not able to move, started slowly. However I was playing with my joints slowly to not be so stiff, nowadays my elbow and shoulder have some stiffness, my elbow 95% of the extension, the muscles on my this arm grow faster idk why, my shoulder joints make a noise depending the way I move and I would say that I have 95% of the range of motion back. I can't fully stretch my elbow because I feel a certain pain in the end of the motion if I force. But I can lift weights normally, do exercises with no problem.

For younger people the recovery is faster. I was 31 at that time, my arm still hurts at different angles even after 4 years. I started going back to the gym after 1 year of the accident. Can do reps at 60ks (including the bar) but need a spotter cause some angles still feel uncomfortable. My aim is to bring my bench to 100kg by the end of 2022.

I still haven't gotten full mobility of my shoulder at extreme angles, even though I went to a physio therapist for some time. I quit going because my main focus was the wrist. New sub here. I have a three-part proximal humerus fracture. I appreciate hearing you say the amount of pain involved in this fracture is quite painful. The road to recovery can be stiff, painful and long. Radial nerve damage etc. Dr’s, that sugar coat this fracture or don’t say anything at all are not helping us manage our pain and our mobility issues. We need to hear what our expectations realistically should be moving forward, so thank you for your straightforward, upfront advice. I appreciated it. I'm going conservative with X-rays every two weeks. Dr showed me how to take my sling off at two weeks to stretch my elbow gently. It is so fragile yet so inflamed. Now that I know how long the healing process will be, I'm throwing myself into PT in 13 days which is also my four week mark. (1 doc wanted me to wait 6 weeks for PT) The pain does lessen, guys. But other things will start to happen. The pooling of blood, for instance, at the elbow, I won't lie, hurts A LOT. Focus on what you can do for relief and healing. I got a stress ball to keep flection going. I rented a recliner works wonders sitting upright. Got a memory foam travel pillow to helps alleviate neck pain while sleeping in the chair. Sleeping is, without a doubt, the absolute most challenging thing to do. Lots of advise on here on this. Pain keeps me awake. For pain, I warm up my elbow with heat then massage the front and back of the massive bruises around the elbow with GlymedPlus Arnica Healing Cream, keeping my shoulder stable. I can even open my arm slightly enough to rub arnica on the part of the arm that presses against my body while in the sling. This hurts too. I stopped the heavy pain meds. Tylenol, Aleve and a small dose of Tramadol get me through. I feel hopeful I won’t need all three much longer. Good luck to all of you. 🙌

I got lucky with my mid shaft fracture because it happened at work so I didn't have to pay for anything but I'm having some issues with my arm now that I haven't had before. I broke my arm in what I would call a freak accident, this happened on dec 21st, 2021. I was just doing my job which involves heavy lifting constantly (50 lbs) and it broke in half like that. Keep in mind that I don't have cancer or a tumor (they tested for this) anyways about a month ago I started having a new pain right below the elbow, my left arm (the one I broke) is significantly bigger than my right arm (right arm is dominant) my physical therapist thinks that my muscles shifted. I see my surgeon again next week and I'm hoping it's not something serious.

I broke my left humerus back in December of last year at work (spiral mid shaft fracture) and had surgery on it a week later, fast forward to August of this year and I had to get another surgery because I had a very serious life threatening bone infection, the bacteria was called pseudomonas aeruginosa. I had surgery on August the 26th to get the 10 screws and plate removed. There is no more pain in my arm now. After surgery I was on a PICC line for about 3 weeks taking cefepime every 8 hrs. He had surgery and 2 pins put in
He didn't scream or cry and he can't cross his fingers or do a thumbs up yet he's got nerve damage hopefully it heals,
it's been 2 weeks still nothing.
The ER left his arm hanging for 2 hours before giving his arm any stability.
I took him to children's which said they shouldn't of allowed his arm to hang that way his elbow was in the front of the arm.
He flipped over his handle bars that's how the injury happened, the Drs said it's a very severe injury.
He's been so positive throughout this entire ordeal, I'm in aww of him.
The fact he didn't cry or scream ever, and I kept waiting for it and it never came, they said he was in shock.

Doc said that I should undergo surgery since my bone union rate without surgery was 20% lol. I undergone surgery at night the same day I broke my arm, fixed a titanium plate with 8 screws. My recovery experience: Broke my humorous and needed ORIF surgery. After surgery I was in a good amount of pain for about 10 days. For two weeks I could only sleep in a reclining chair. Not sure what it is about a chair but nothing else came close. Started PT about a month after surgery 3x a week. My range of motion was terrible! I could only lift my arm about 20 degrees in any direction from my side. Event the PT guy was amazed at how little range I had. Equally remarkable was how much muscle I lost in my deltoid. It was about a quarter of the size as my good arm. Also they reattached my bicep in a different spot (maybe the doc can explain why) so that felt a bit weird and my bicep was very sore. The PT person thought I might have ruptured it (turns out I didn’t). After about 5 month of pt I regained a little strength and about 150 deg range ( 180 would be my arm directly over my head :)). I also found that doing PT in a pool on my own was awesome! The cold water helped with the pain and the buoyancy of water and its slight resistance was perfect. About 8 months after surgery was the first time I had moments I didn’t notice my arm was sore. I did t do much physical therapy after my five months on my own…..I just needed a break. About a yr post surgery I have 95% range back and definitely not as much soreness. 1yr and 2 months I finally felt like I could start lifting a good amount of weight to start to get the muscle back I had before. I think once I do everything will end up being 95-100% normal. I’m sharing my experience because this injury is super slow to recover from and at times i got a little depressed thinking I may never be able to do certain things again or that my arm would never feel the same. Believe me it gets better but u need to do the work! This surgery definitely takes a year to recover from I’d think. I’m 51 so likely a younger person might fair better but I was in really good shape at the time of my injury. For me I’m thinking 1.5 yrs and for some it might be two yrs…..but it does get better!

@@billybob-lu5jp sorry to hear. I’m definitely not a pain meds guy but definitely had to use them for a couple of weeks. If u don’t have a reclining chair I’d def get one, it helps a lot with the pain and is the only way u can sleep. Also highly recommend starting PT sooner or later but your doc should let u know when u are ready. Some PT places are better than others and some therapists as well so don’t be afraid to switch if you’re not satisfied. Also early on doing your own PT is great. The buoyancy of water let’s u do a lot of range of motion without so much pain and the coldness of the water also helps the pain. It’s a slow recovery but it will get better. Good luck!

I had to go through 2 surgery's with my broken humerus, 1st surgery last yr dec 29th with plate & 10 screws, fast forward to august and had to get another one because I had a serious bone infection called osteomyelitis with the bacteria pseudomonas aeruginosa which has a mortality rate of %18- %62. It took months to notice I had something wrong with my arm, noticed one part of the insion was red, swollen, and tender. I had to get the metal taken out on aug 26th, stayed for 6 days and was discharged with a PICC line in my arm taking cefepime every 8 hrs for a few weeks, then got switched to oral antibotics after that was over with. Now I am pain free but still have those 10 screw holes which are considered weak points so still have to be careful. The bacteria I had is mostly found in hospitals. The scary part is that the infectious disease person told me that it could come back, hopefully not. The bacteria was never in my bloodstream, just in my bone. I was never sick from the infection either, I am 29 and healthy too so that might be why. I hope noone else has to go through all that.

I'm four weeks into my fracture with conservative treatment (a brace), still in pain, and using a Vicodin & ice pack regimen to rein in the soreness. My hand and arm are loosening up -- no more rash or discoloration, and less stiffness. My fear is that I will never again full mobility in my left arm. Fortunately, I'm right-side dominant, but I still hope beyond hope for a full recovery. I still can't lift my arm up more than a few inches, which has me dispirited. I'm pushing 50 and is the first time I've broken a bone (in my body or anybody else's).

I fell October 6 down two flights of stairs and broke my humerus bone in five places. I had to have ORIF surgery the ninth a plate the full length of the bone 13 screws and donor bone tissue. I also injured my radial nerve. It stretched and then got caught up in my breaks . I really don’t understand what this doctor is talking about with plastic casts.

Doctors cannot be bothered with adding to these conversations, these YT posts are placed here for a portfolio and somewhere to send clients to see that they are somebody. Ive read through some serious comments and the people want advice and peace of mind however doctors simply cannot offer you that, they want money. so if you have money forget this shit and go to a good doctor with a good reputation and pay him or her the vast sums of money they require, and youll get the answers you need. you wont get help here i can assure you of that.

For people, who are facing difficulty lying down to sleep after plaster....
Fractured my left humerus.. First two weeks was the worst... I couldnt sleep at the first night because of pain... The next day I consulted with the doctor only to know how i could lie down to sleep... So, he told me to gently lie down on my right shoulder from sitting position.... And then ease into my back keeping the hand on a pillow for support... The pain while laying in this fashion somewhat reduced to a good extent...

All the horror stories id heard of these prescription pain meds. For 3+ weeks was in excruciating pain because no doctors would re-prescribe the meds. My arm is a lot better than it was but not 100%. Still cant move as well as my good arm and 1-2 times a week it is sensitive/hurts to move. Atleast i can lay on it now and sleeping ok.

You don't need prescriptions for most pain killers. They're available OTC.
When this happened to me 7 years ago, the first nights were nearly sleepless. What eased the pain at night was keeping the arm in elevated position, but still horizontal, parallel to the body. So roll up a blanket or additional pillow, put it under your arm, and see if it helps.
You'll have another X-Ray in a few weeks and once the bone is healed you can start a long lasting physio. The physio can take months so be prepared for that.
      Be brave! You'll be fine.
P.S. The support for your arm may be like that:
