I drove in Guernsey about 15 years ago and it was very pleasant. I really liked the fact that when the locals see your "mainland" number plates, (or the "H" plates on a Hire Car,) they give you priority and are very courteous!

Coming from France, I’ve never had problems to drive on Guernsey with my car (as in UK). I like the courtesy of English people on road. Now, I move with the bus.

    Hello again!
As you know I have lived for a long time in Saint Brieuc, just 60 miles south, and went from 1997, as often as I could to Guernsey.
And in 2002 I came with my 206cc, peugeot and after having seen a site I " took the road" again and I tried to follow a mgf driven by a young lady... But I couldn't cope with her pace...!!

I was 30 when we left Guernsey and I had never driven, mainly because we didn't own a car. All familiar roads. Mount Arrive - went to Girl's Grammar from St Sampsons so up and down there a lot on my bike. You passed where both my maternal and paternal grandparents lived so I enjoyed that drive - lots of memories. Thank you Ross.

People driving in Guernsey are very polite. British drivers on the whole are but it is really nice how calm islanders are behind the wheel. The roads are tiny though😂. The top 35mph limit makes sense once you see them.

I learnt to drive in Guernsey and used to whizz around the narrow roads with no problem. I am not so sure I’d be confident now though. Mind you I was young then and saw no danger. I live in Essex and the driving is fast and aggressive, which I have found difficult to get used to in the 20 years I’ve been here. I should have done it the other way round! Also roads in Essex and many other parts of the UK, by all accounts, are in a horrendous state. Very little is done to maintain them now.

6:47 That view of Herm and Sark is absolutely stunning! There's a spot in Jersey called the Ronez Loop, where you get an amazing view right the way from Normandy round to Guernsey (and Alderney on a very clear day). But, yours is much better! Perhaps the best view from a retail park in the British Isles? 😆Can you see Jersey from any point in Guernsey?
I'd also say because we have a dual carriageway in Jersey, the change to the UK isn't as much of a shock, but we obviously still don't have motorways miles long. But the Jersey dual carriageway is 40mph (traffic goes 40-50 normally), then when you drive on a UK motorway and everyone is going up to 80mph, but it still doesn't feel any faster while you're doing it. I suppose it's all relative.

On the MOT thing, both Channel Islands have to introduce them now as part of the Brexit agreement, if Jersey- and Guernsey-registered cars are still to be legal to drive on EU roads.

How do Guernsey people find driving on motorways around St. Malo ?? The step up is even higher than going to the UK (80mph !!)

Hi most of the roads in London are 20mph zones so I may be a good thing to have the slower speeds apart from the problem s with the car engine but I like the looks of the layouts of the roads wear you are keep up with the good work 😊

  • @grahamjones5947

HI Ross in the U.K.our speed limit within towns have been reduced to 20 mph eco friendly or so they tell us of course the national speed limit of 60 mph still applies and 70 mph on motorways so for the most we are slower than you.

I have driven in both Guernsey and Jersey and have no problems. Mined you I used to drive double decker buses round small villages in East Anglia. I would imagine it's harder for some one from the channel Islands to drive in the UK. Were as we have experience in driving on all types and sizes of roads. You don't.

It is decidedly different than driving in America because the steering wheel is on the opposite side of the car, and traffic flows in the opposite direction based on the side of the road then in the US. I do have a question about right-hand side steering wheel drive cars though. In a left hand side steering wheel drive cars the accelerator pedal is on the right, in an automatic transmission vehicle the brake pedal is on the left, and in a manual transmission vehicle it is in the center while in a manual transmission vehicle the clutch pedal is on the left. Is the pedal layout the same in a right hand drive vehicle, or is the layout also the opposite with the accelerator on the left, the brake on the right or in the middle as the transmission may dictate and the clutch on the right.
I don't think changing steering wheel position or driving on the opposite side of the road would cause serious muscle memory issues, but I do believe if the foot pedal layout were different that would be a disaster.

    • @ectopudding
      @ectopudding ปีที่แล้ว +1

The pedals are exactly the same layout so it is easy to adapt. Clutch on left, brake in middle and accelerate/gas on right.

Driving in the Channel Islands, is very different to driving on the UK mainland.
One the distance between places, you may drive between on either the Jersey or Gurney islands, the two biggest Islands.
Are very much shorter, so your annual mileage will be great deal lower too.
On the UK mainland average mileage, could be anywhere between 10,000 to 15,000 miles a year!
Where it must be a third of this, on the Channel Islands, so the cost of motoring on the Islands, must be lower too I expect.
I don't know what the price of petrol, or diesel, or LPG per litre, is presently on the Channel Islands?
Or the cost of public electric charging, is on the Channel Islands, compared to UK mainland too?
Or the difference in vehicle insurance rates, on the Channel Islands, compared to the UK mainland?
Is road fund tax in the Channel Islands, the same as the UK mainland?
How many registered private vehicles and commercial vehicles, or registered drivers are there on Gurney, or in the Channel Islands?
I would say the Channel Islands and Gurney, the roads are more friendly towards small cars.
Not large European, let alone American large car friendly, from your video even commercial van seem on the small size too.
Do you have large or 12m long articulated lorries, or heavy goods ridged 9m lorries, on the islan?
Or are just small Non-HGV's 7.5 ton and HGV-3 10 ton lorries, used on the island only?
Or equally large or 12m long buses, are found on the island too?

@@gallantvoyager the number of people carrying boxes!... Nobody carries a box 24/7
Kids can make there own way home.
The number of people that drive every day under a mile in the UK is ridiculously high, which has resulted in charges.
But still its very different, the UK is big by comparison with towns and cities bigger than Guernsey. Car ownership in Guernsey is pointless selfish and lazy.
