In Serbia, there are community of people which love to sit in front of markets... They are not panhandlers. He was just trying to bond with you and take some pics. That is Serbia

lately ...when i was there 30 years ago it had like 50 different shops and cafes ...it was live place with people all around..buildings and houses were in good shape .
But when i was there few weeks ago it was totally different picture ...road to there was with holes...it was clearly not fixed for some time..off that 50 shops 80% were completely abandoned for long time ,building are in bad condition ..many abandoned also completely.
My relatives are now old..they are close to 90 years old...but their children and grandchildren are gone to cities and will not return ..their children sell their apartment for like 1/5 off price that is in town for same size but no one want to buy it .
Young people dont want to live in villages ..even with beautiful nature and stuff ..so they are left to die....its just proces that in west already happened long time ago ..when i drive in west europe you dont see villages on road for long time . ...in Serbia villages were everywhere ..you almost always drive try some place ..also Serbia has now lower population then 30 years ago ..more people die then they are born

Dear Gabriel, wellcome to Serbia, town Niš. I can't belive, you was a few hundreds metars near at our house. Thank you for presentation our country and Balkan's State's together. You saw hairraising tower, it building with Serbian's head's from 1809. We paid much expensiv our freedom. Only in one town-Sremska Mitrovica, were born 7 Rome's imperators. @IM southfruit No they weren't. It was the Austrians who started the Illyrian Albanian claim for policital reasons - before that the Albanians (Shqiptars - in their own language) were clueless. The Croats and Serbs - especially in Dalmatia - had an Illyrian movement LONG before the notion was put into Albanians' heads.
Further, the Austrians were calling Serbs Illyrian people in their documents in the 18th century.
Also, the people in this part of Serbia were Thracians.
And Serbs and other South "Slavs' are shown by DNA and haplogroups to have been there much longer than the Germanic claims. The Byzantines were REMOVING South Slavs who were SETTLED all over Greece and Macedonia - even in the southern parts - in the 7th century, and bringing in Armenians, Syrians and people from Italy to replace them.
Albanians weren't mentioned until the 11th century and they were brought into the Balkans by the Byzantines as mercenaries.

There is an "Albania" in the Caucasus in 800 A.D.
Albanian language is similar in syntax and grammar to the Caucasus language.
Albanian also has sounds that are common in the Caucasus by uncommon in Europe.
The South Slavs of Herzegovina are almost pure I2a1b2 and they have NO Albanian language influence whatsoever.
There were also CELTIC and THRACIAN tribes in the parts where THIS video was filmed.
Serbs called themselves Rascians.
Take of the 'Th' in Thracians and you get very similar words.
Also the SOUTH Slavs have Dinaric aspects to their look and HEIGHT.
Even the GREEKS and others wrote of how tall the people in Illyria were.
The Albanians are generally shorter than average.

Also the Albanian language doesn't have any of its own original marine words, while the Illyrians were seafarers.
Albanian is also weak in FARMING words but it is rich in MOUNTAIN words.
Albanians originated from a mountainous area and not around the sea.

Albanians do not have a single historical monument that would confirm their history here, and it is interesting that in almost the entire Balkans there are toponyms of Slovenian (Illyrian) roots. Relatively the same language is spoken from the Black Sea to Triglav, from Subotica to Djevdjelija !!! !!

Felix Romuliana is great but there are much more important roman sites in Serbia which needs more recognition. As example google these terms: Viminacium, Sirmium, Naissus Mediana, etc...

If you are still in Eastern Serbia consider visiting Negotin and more importantly Rajačke and Rogljevačke "pimnice" (vine cellars). They are not really easy to reach up in the hills, but it's well worth it for sure!

You are moving between an Autochtone Ancient Proto Slavic Culture which is going back to the Roman Republic and Beyond, I mean 5000 Years Before Christ. Highly recommendation are serbian medieval orthodox monasteries protected by UNESCO as world heritage built by serbian kings from 11th to 13th century such as Sopoćani, Djurdjevi stupovi, Studenica, Župa, Mileševa, Ravanica, Petrova crkva (Peter's church) and on Kosovo Gračanica, Visoki Dečani, Bogorodica Ljeviška, Stara patrijaršija...

Did you go to the tumuli on a nearby hill? This is were Galerius and his mother were buried. Beautiful ancient Roman site. Little did those builders and artists know how 2000 years later their work will still be admired. lol

You should also maybe check out Viminacium if you are interested in Roman sites. It's near the town of Kostolac.

In looking for more info on Felix Romuliana I stumbled upon a cool VR site called History in 3D. They have a section on this place illustrating how it probably would have appeared in its day. Also they have a nifty TH-cam video taking you through the place. Search "Felix Romuliana in 3D" and it shouldn't be hard to find.

If you do, check out all the things that you can do in the city, because there is so much to see. There are a lot of historical landmarks, as well as natural beauties, which are not mentioned in these videos. Also, food is delicious in the local restaurants, so make sure to try food in 'kafana'. If you have more time, check Pirot and its surroundings, it only 70 km away from Nis. :)
You never make friends with locals- I think You miss a lot... (I don't mean the marker guys type). Probably it's just a precaution not to get in the trouble. But sometimes it's the best adventure to get in the trouble))

People in Serbia always welcome quests and share their food and drinks, and always offer better portions to their guests. They are very well known for that. Anybody else have any suggestions.......

Gabriel, Niš is also an ancient Roman city, Naissus. Serb that exploded the armory was Stevan Sindjelić and he was one of the leaders in the First Serbian Uprising against Ottoman oppression. There are more interesting things, both ruin and religious, down south in Kosovo. Please check and read about accessing those sites before traveling, as some that you choose to visit, might not be officially in Serbian territory (not to go into too much detail, just do your homework). Also, there are very nice places to visit along the river Ibar which is west of Niš. You can come up north to Belgrade and/or Novi Sad when you are done exploring south by using this road along Ibar river called Ibarska Magistrala.
On another note, out of respect and just in general so you can access some of these sites (if you decide to visit), please wear trousers and closed toe shoes. You will not be able to enter in shorts and sandals. Good luck and have fun!

This older guy in front of a local shop wanted to treat you as a family friend, to buy you a bear or a drink, this is a part of the culture, foreigner is treated as a guest, and he wanted to show you a hospitality. This is especially a norm in villages and smaller places, thought in a cities if you make friends, they will never allow you to pay, and they will invite you to their homes for a launch or a dinner.

Hey Gabriel, I am your neighbor ( northern California resident) I need your help. I am flying solo and I am 200 years old , LOL~ to Serbia the first week of October. In your honest opinion , will it be safe to go to Serbia alone by myself? I plan on renting a car and just drive around Serbia. What is the likelihood of my return flight being cancelled? I checked State Department website and travel advisory suggest essential travel (level 3) to Serbia. I don't trust state department website sometimes. I've been to places where they were not right as far as travel advisory is concerned. I'd rather trust your honest opinion and also from travel bloggers who are now in Serbia. Am desperate to get away from the fire and this crazy election.Heck, I'd even go to Pluto if I can just to be away from all these chaos especially from California.
Yeah you should be good man, gotta be better than the virus, election mayhem and daily smoke inhalation back in Cali. Plus it's so affordable out here. I rented my car from Sixt and can recommend them, only $25 a day. I booked rooms on booking.com on the same day I needed them, sometimes just a few minutes before I arrived in town. So you can just drive around and explore and you'll have a great time. Safe travels.
mel, welcome to Serbia! I am so glad that you will visit my country. I was in many countries in Europe and I think Serbia is so safe for travelling and visiting, better than in many countries. My suggestion is to see the fresco White Angel, this is the first picture that was sent as a message in the first satellite broadcast signal from Europe to America after the Cuban Missile Crisis, as a symbol of peace and civilization. I asked him about it and the brickwork was reconstructed. None of the original ruins from the 4th century BC can be seen, it's all buried in the ground. But much of the rock walls, etc. are original from Roman times.

That airplane parked by the road looked like it might have crashed. I wonder what its story was.....
In that area was very developed agricultural in past and 1989 small airfield was build for agricultural planes for spraying mostly cherry, vineyard plantation...For that purpose that plane(PZL-104 Wilga 35A) you saw in video was bought from USA for 60 000 $. That place has big plans for big modern airfield in future, but didn't happen. Now plane is there just like a monument to remind on better times.
