    I bought an #airbrush for £7.34 from #temu, surely it's going to be trash right? Let's see if we can paint an Imperial Fist with it! I've chosen a MK6 marine with a plasma gun as I think this is a really interesting model to put the airbrush through it's paces.
    *PLEASE NOTE: It was £7.34 when I ordered, however prices on Temu do change quite a lot so please bear that in mind!

      Airbrushes are as good as the purpose you use them for.
      I predominantly use them for just base paints, basing, large flat panels (vehicles and Titans) and larger effects.
      A cheaper airbrush typically is awful, this one seems ok.
      Either way, for under 10 Euro (basically $10 USD) this is pretty amazing.
      Side note: don't go thinking you can detail paint with an airbrush. The pros make it look easy, but just like it takes most of us a year+ just to get comfortable and adept at painting details with a paint brush, an airbrush is the same if not more difficult.
      But again for larger painting and/or effect painting such as light sources, shadows, animations (glow of a plasma gun), etc, they're fantastic! :]

    Awesome video, and a perfect way to show you can amend your workflow to accomodate the tool, rather than having to feel like you can't do it at all unless you spend more than you can afford. I have a cheapie with a USB compressor that I used for pretty much exactly what you just did, and it built up my confidence that when I bought a compressor and a better quality airbrush I wouldn't ruin them and I knew better what I was doing. I still use the cheapie and the USB compressor for priming and basecoating though. Especially if I want to brush-paint the rest.

    To get around airbrushing white, some Golden or Liquitex Airbrush Medium should do the trick as they contain a mix of flow improver, medium, thinner, etc.. or just plain old Flow Improver should work.

    Super video! Really nice to have a pretty concise video on basic airbrush technique and some of the potential pitfalls.
    Question (for anyone): If I've never used an airbrush before, is a cheap one like this a good starter? Or is it maybe better to spend a little bit more money on one that is easier to get a smoother covering? e.g. with that white, I might struggle to get it not splattery because of a lack of experience, would a more expensive set-up help in this regard?

  • @ABeeken
    @ABeeken 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    What a perfect video to pop up in my suggestions! I got a cheaper (£60) airbrush from Amazon just after Christmas with an aim to use it (initially) for priming minis to move away from using Citadel rattle cans and i have to say, the worry about getting started using it has halted my painting for months now.
    I popped it out last night after getting some Vallejo primer bottles and, while I got a good cost of black on my test minis, the grey i got to do a zenithal prime with wouldn't come out of the nozzle and led to a bunch of frustration. This is a great video for just step by step looking at how to go about prepping different colours and i now see that i was likely putting too much paint in the hopper and not thinning it.
    Tonight I'll try less paint with a dash of the cleaner i bought as you're using here! Brilliant stuff!

      Only downside to low pressure is that they tend to clog a little more easily than usual. Great to practice, but it will probably lead to a bigger investment if you like airbrushing.

    • @SeanHoltzman
      @SeanHoltzman 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @organicod2438 True in some environments, If you have very dry and hot air like I do living in desert and no A/C then it's actually better and won't splatter/gum up. Even then, thinning down paints a bit more and making sure to use some airbrush Flow Aide /should/ fix any gumming. Hot ambient (85+°F) air or no air tank attached to compressor so compressor always running = ~5psi lower than "generally recommended," and then really dry ambient air is usually another ~5psi from from recommended.
      Moisture in the ambient is very good BUT you want dry through the airbrush so a moisture filter between tank and hose is needed in high humidity areas, but mostly the problem with moisture in airbrush line is water spattering, uneven air flow so spray patter gets messed up, or in extreme cases paint on needle tip can migrate through micro bubbles and start to clog the air-flow area under the air cap in a variety of ways, but generally that isn't a "fix with more air pressure" problem because more air pressure means more compressor ontime which increases heat and moisture in-line, hence the need for a moisture trap and why you lower PSI under the prior mentioned conditions to prevent paint drying out too quickly

    I think a point that needs to be amplified is this: If you're completely new to airbrushing, dropping £100+ on something you may not like is folly. But £7 to give you a 70% feel of what a decent airbrush is like is INSANE. Absolutely the correct call. Just ordered one myself.

    • @LunarTikOfficial
      @LunarTikOfficial 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This will not give you the feel of a real brush. This will turn you off if you think this is how brushes are suppose to act with little to no sustained air pressure..

    Best airbrush cleaner I've used:

    • @SeanHoltzman
      @SeanHoltzman 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Also, make sure you know what is in your paints, if you happen to use something with enamel or acrylic pigment but don't check the binding/coating material you can find you wont clean or thin or whatever with these. If that happens stop until you find more info on your paints. Brands like Spaz-Stix have amazing airbrush paints that are extremely thin out the bottle and have some amazing utility, but their binding chems are a Laquer, so you'll need to clean with laquer cleaner for deep cleaning, but protecting your airbrush by running extra Flow Aide, or assembly/protection airbrush oil through the brush after a deep clean means if you clean immediately you often can still use standard cleaners because the laquer gets washed off the oil, not the metal.

    It was nice to see the results you could achieve for easily getting mass tabletop infantry done.
    Can I ask a nooby question, why would you use airbrush cleaner in place of airbrush thinner, you said it was okay to use either or in the video and i dont know why, the airbrush cleaner changes the surface tension of the paint? Is that what thinners do?

    My only concern with the better starter kit air brush you recommend is the noise. I live with my sister so I don’t think she’d appreciate hearing the compressor for a couple hours while I work. 😅 although! I definitely plan on buying that kit one day, the cheap brush is actually very appealing because of its profile, ease of use being portable and noise since I paint in my room. Is there any brush on Amazon like the cheap brush? I live in America and definitely wanna try to start air brushing. Using a steady-state high-compression fan instead of a compressor is the real trick.
      It's like the difference between running your computer off of a power conditioning UPS, and just plugging it into a power strip.
      If a computer has a really good power supply, and a really good motherboard, it doesn't make much of a difference.
      If you're running cheap hardware like a Dell, you can end up with all sorts of random problems.
      Having nice smooth air flow, will make even the cheapest airbrush preform adequately.
      I got one that works great, I'm still planning on upgrading the actual airbrush part just for some extra features.

    I've got an airbrush just like this, from Amazon. All I really use Airbrushing for is base coating. zenithals and filters (most recently with Imperial Fist yellow too!). Seeing as that's all I really use the airbrush for I've not really felt a great need to pursue a more expensive kit until I either level up my game enough to need one or until I finally move out of a teensy flat and can setup a proper space for hobbying.
    Love the content, those Fists (or Lamenters?) look excellent!

      Yeah the main benefits you’ll get from upgrading are the build quality, the smoothness of the trigger, and a higher pressure range on the compressor, but at the cost of a lot more space and money!
      Thanks very much for your comment and if you post your minis on social media drop me a tag, I’d love to see your work

    I got a similar dual action airbrush kit off amazon for something like $45 USD. It worked fine for a couple months of light use, but vibrated itself apart this week. The top of the battery/compressor housing came loose and couldnt hold a seal leading to it running constantly and losing pressure. I'd say I "got my moneys worth" since I didnt want to spend a few hundred on a professional level kit when I wasn't sure if I would use it that much.

      Sad to hear yours has come apart! The more expensive kits definitely have better build quality, even the Fendga FD-186K which is £100 here in the UK is a big step up in that regard and is the compressor I’ve been using for over 3 years now and going strong

    People really sleep on these little portable airbrushes, realistically the average new user don't and should not spend big money on a regular compressor and airbrush when starting out. Unless you paint on such a level where an airbrush really makes a difference these little guys are perfect for your average painter doing basic shading and basecoating. Amazon got a couple of these with different levels of PSI to choose from all for really good prices.

    I bought this airbrush and it never worked after I cleaned it. Even when I got a new one from the customer service it had the same problem again. The paint was causing bubbles inside of the paint pot and didn't come out at all. I know that this normally means that I didn't clean it well enough but I really don't think that this is what caused the problem because I cleaned it very carefully before using it again. Do you have any idea what I could have done wrong? Is there something special I need to watch out for when cleaning it or putting it back together?

    I airbrushed with the autolock 27 psi airbrush for about a year before the button on the compressor went out and I used it A LOT. I contacted them through amazon and the replaced it within a week and I continued using that one for about 10 months. I decided to try a "real" airbrush set up, but after about 5 minutes, the noise of a big compressor (trust me I tried 3 different compressors), was too much after the convenience of these little hand held ones. I can even walk over to the sink and rinse it all out in like 15 seconds! So, I returned all of that, but kept my iwata eclipse brush and bought another battery powered airbrush, but this time got the imyyds brand. This airbrush had a 32psi compressor and a 1/8th npt thread so I could attach my iwata eclipse to it. needless to say, it absolutely crushes it when it comes to airbrushing. The airbrushes that come with these are 'fine', but after you become more proficient, you'll notice the limitations. The biggest I experienced was the concentricity of the nozzle and needle relative to the hole in the nozzle cap, basically they're off center from one another, so you don't get a uniform airflow around the needle. As a newer airbrusher, this doesn't matter, but like I said, as you become more proficient, it becomes more noticeable. All in all, I recommend this style of airbrush to anyone, it's awesome. Good luck with your decision!

    • @boblemand
      @boblemand 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've got an autolock aswell, but I find it clogging up a lot spattering blobs of paint onto the model before the real flow starts. It's possible to work around it, but i would be nice not to have to start off model and such things.
      Do you know if it's possible to attach a hose and another airbrush to that compressor?
      Or can you by any chance send links to your current setup?

    • @GS_37
      @GS_37 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@boblemand I had that too, I found the "perfect" paint consistency helped, but that's not always easy to do. I found that the nozzle has to clog just slightly with paint over time and you'll notice the needle doesn't protrude as far out and that's when I'd get the best spray, but that window only lasted so long. Also, take a look directly on at the needle, see if you have a uniform gap around around the needle. If not, loosen the nozzle cap a fraction of a turn to see if you can get the gap uniform around the needle and nozzle, that will help your spray pattern.
      Unfortunately, the autolock seems to have a unique thread pitch to their compressor. I wasn't able to find an adapter or thread an airbrush on, since most are 1/8 NPT.
      This was why I switched to the 32psi imyyds compressor; to have increased air pressure for spattering and a 1/8th NPT thread to use a higher quality airbrush. The "5 psi" seems to make a big difference. I can't comment on the airbrush portion though, because I've never used it. I switched it for the iwata eclipse to have the best of both worlds. I also purchased the army painter air paints set and everything works well (but only if you lay a zenithal down first).

    i am amused when someone posts on the forums that they have never used a airbrush before and want to get into it so people recommend starting with a $600 airbrush and compressor. I tell them to get the $75 Harbor Freight airbrush and compressor and use it for awhile. If they like using a airbrush and want to stay with it then upgrade to a better airbrush and later replace the compressor. If you stay in it wyou have a backup airbrush that isnt that bad and a spare compressor. If you decide you dont like it your not out $600.
    Couple of years now Im still using my Harbor Freight airbrush and compressor. I have a el cheapo $18 off Amazon as my backup but had to hone the needle on a whetstone as tip was bent. my Dad had a Badger and I think a Iwata.
