Wish you would’ve redesigned the Ridgerunner as a car as well. Could’ve taken it in a few fun directions. Why shouldn’t maybe an upper level manager at the local mine drive to work in his Imperial Sedan??? Id just be afraid of people saying I’m misleading them because we already have a unit in our index called “Truck” haha
More people need to appreciate that he probably put 100 hours into this project not to mention designing all of the new terrain and 3-D, printed parts from his team, and squished it all into a 17 minute video that had me hooked from beginning to end. Great work EOB team!!!!
I think you nailed it there “looks like two armies proxies together” Make every unit completely different looking, like a random city all waking up at once
Exactly this. I kitbash a bunch of necromunda models in and the only consist detail I have between units is that they have the same white Armour recipe as their base colour. Skin tone, cloth colour, and sculpts are all mixed as much into a hodge podge as possible
I really feel the struggle you've had with gsc, so many times half the struggle is figuring out how to move forward and fix mistakes but that gets harder and harder as you keep committing to it
Literally building my first Genestealer Cult combat patrol right now and I'm so happy you got around to revisiting these guys!! Absolutely love how they turned out!!
I think this video needs a part 2 %100. You did the minis very well but one of the main challenges is to integrate soldiers into a miner society. Now that’s a real color scheme challenge. Cant wait for you to come up with other genestealer units to show the whole picture. Great job Jay!
Protip for your cultists: save all you bits and especially your heads, and buy necromunda sets to put them on. That way it feels like your cultists are emerging from more than just the mines but all parts of the underhive,
The drill vehicle is awesome, but i can tell you one thing about heavy equipment the yellow paint doesn’t wear off it comes off in chunks. So sponging on bright bits of paint would still look accurate for the type of vehicle
TH-cam's automatic subtitles (which I had on by accident) decided that this army is now called Jean Stealer Cult. So that's going to be canon for me going forward. 😁
another reason the hairdryer didnt work on the green stuff: the putty cures by the two surfaces touching, heat does nothing. theres really no way to speed it up as far as i know, but on the bright side you can paint over uncured green stuff with no repercussions
I can't help but feel like the videos about GSC and deathguard are just procrastinating from finishing the dark eldar. And this is something I vibe with
dude, you are such an amazing painter and don't give yourself enough credit, you really inspire me to try new things whether its converting or painting, you always help, much love from Australia my friend
All of those armys up to 00:20 were insane, that ghazkull model was insane, that deathguard marine was awesome WOW! I would have loved for u to paint a tau or necron army for me bro ahahhah
Just recently got the combat patrol, and this is some great inspiration. Been really struggling to figure out how I wanna paint them, but now I think I've got a better idea. It's shocking how little GSC content there is on TH-cam
As a Genestealer Cult player, it took me three attempts before I settled on a scheme I liked. Glad to see you found how you show your devotion to the four armed emperor!
6:05 the secret to the Achilles Ridge Runner is to make it into a regular guardsman vehicle. Brown or tan paint job, the missile launcher weapon option, and a few decals makes for a neat little Imperial scout.
I got my first set a week ago and haven't stopped watching your videos, I NEED MORE ARMIES is what I've taken from them haha your paint work is awesome I hope mine look as good as yours do someday
That Siraya Tech resin is fantastic... pricier than some of the other ones I've used, but I've had fewer failures with it and my minis are quite resilient.
I can’t believe you didn’t strip the paint.. I had a lot of them painted, and did in fact strip them. I have a lot built and are waiting to get the new color scheme going. Probably that grey and orange that looks pretty good on them.
imo i think that the proxy ridgerunner shoukd have been used as a goliath truck. The entire point of the ridgerunner is to be a sleek vehicle that fires a bunch and zooms around, and the design of it really supports that. The truck, on the other hand, is a beat up old thing that used to carry miners and now carries weapons and cultists, and the proxy model really fits that.
I love the colorscheme and it's amazing how quick you can paint an army looking this good. But I do think you rushed a bit too hard, with not painting the nosetubes or the cultsymbols on their belts. But it probably catches my eye because you show them close to the camera. On the tabletop, I don't think many people would notice.
I am the opposite. I think the new scheme is way too…simple? I don’t say this to be offensive, but it absolutely looks like he zenithal primed the models and then messily hit them with two contrast paints. It’s extremely amateurish. @@03dashk64Well, that's what you do when you want a horde army ready in a couple of weeks and not in a year or two. Different approaches for different ends.
Yea, I think they are good for tabletop, but with a little more time, I think they would look alot better. But you have to weigh that time against how many units you have to paint for a horde army and what you want out of it. It mostly cahtes my eye in the close ups of single models, with the entire army on the field, it looks cool.

@4:19, Greedo: Solo!!! Excellent work Jay! They look great with minimal effort! Years ago, I found a 3d printed sci-fi limousine on Etsy I think, perfect for the Magus to ride around in style. While I do love the current GSC vehicle line, I think GSCs need some normal looking scratch-built / 3D printed vehicles that aren't all mining. I like the idea that GSC are everywhere within the community, gas stations, hospitals, daycares, etc. I only have the SC done up so far so it would be fun to find some minis and put GSC heads and arms on "normal" everyday folk. I really need to check out Ash Wastes now that you can create rules for your own vehicles, sounds awesome and reminds me of Gorkamorka kinda.
I am currently working on a similar project, but I took a bit more drastic measures.. reworking my grey knights and the most annoying part for me,... their size and pose so I started kitbashing every single infantry model after I sold the old army for quite a good price the leviathan terminators and assault intercessory are amazing bases, but require a lot of work and quite a lot of plastic putty so far I finished: - Draigo - 5 purifiers - 10 terminators now working on a strike squad
I had such a good time painting Genestealers like the Xenomorphs. Black undercoat, then two thin washes of silver. Once dried a wash of green and black over the entire model. You get that black finish, with that shimmer/shine Xenomorphs have. Then use PVV glue mixed with some UHU glue, and almost glaze it over the teeth, mouth, tongue and joints. After 3 or 4 passes, it builds that ozzing, goo that the Xenomorphs have and drool. Once you've done that, it's ALL about the detailing and highlighting.... If you are good at detailing and highlighting, these final touches make an absolutely evil looking army of Genestealer Xenos.
Muting out the purple on my chaos genestealers really helped them look slightly more sickly than yours in the way I was going for, like they’re about to melt into goop. This video saved my army from the bin since it’s made of models too heavily converted for eBay
GSC is really hard to paint don't worry man I've had mine for about 4 months and I can't find the inspiration to paint em. So i just kinda put em away for awhile but I'm getting there now I got em painted in a bright yellow and blue jeans
Another excellent video Jay - I just love how you do an absolute ton of work, but there is rarely any complaining or negativity about it. Love your style, happy personality and hard work ethic... Keep it up mate, we appreciate you .
I also have a GSC army that I haven’t played in a while. I don’t hate the paint job I did; I think it’s pretty good considering how difficult GSC’s paint scheme is… but it could be better. I think I will paint strip 10 Hybrids and try again, and see how they turn out. I really liked that Drill Rig model and making those special blips. I’m going to buy more crater terrain and use those as blips, and sacrifice some of my old Purestrain Genestealers models to make my own blips. The only problem is that blips are relatively small in diameter and even the smallest crater terrain might be too wide. But that’s an issue for competitive play and I’ll just play my GSC army casually against my friends.
I absolutely love the approach you have in this one. Spend quality time paiting the parts you love to paint and find a way to paint the parts you don't love in ways that aren't tiresome. Applause! I'd like to ask if you do tests for color schemes. I always feel like picking color schemes is the hardest part for me, it makes me very indecisive and I get sometimes blocked. Tanks, for instance, get me stomped.
The sentinels could work really well as mining units as well, just needs to replace the old school catachan chainsword with drills (or those FW loader claws, god those were awesome parts) and "mining" lasers and you're all set, plus they would be real fun to paint. The "not Hot Wheels racer" truck feels like it needs a bit more love though, mostly in hazard striping to really flair-up that "industrial" vibe to it. My chaos guard was also based on a rebelling mining colony and a big part of it was played by repurposed mining gear thx to the Siege of Vraks resins, especially the Ogryns with their pickaxes and rock drills.
This actually really helps me. I'm currently painting my Genestealers for Necromunda, and I am having zero fun but couldn't figure out why. Completely ditching the traditional painting methods and just embracing contrast and shades. Also going to have to subscribe to the Patreon just for the STLs. Need stuff to flesh out my Zone Mortalis
Making me want to do a GSC prison break. A prison planet infected by Tyranid filth, angry prisoners born into imprisonment for their forefather's mistakes, turning to the four armed god in the depths of the ancient prison.
I had the idea of going greyscale with mine, silver weapons, then pick out a specific piece on each guy and make it red. Never got to it because even with playing them right my dice absolutely abhorred giving me even minimum successes even on 2+s. I had several points where Kelermorph was hitting and wounding on 2s, only got 3 hits after all shots made, then 3 1s to wound.
I feel the same way about necrons, I love the models but lost the passion and enjoyment of painting them, was thinking about eBay, but this just gave me an idea. I’m wanting to start a death guard army and I have some, maybe a nurgle necron might be in my future
Brooo I'm doing the exact same thing. I got inspired from that 1 incredible piece on the codex cover that and am going for a hellraiser vibe. It's mostly black and white but the vibe shift has been great for motivation to finish it. Dude crazy. I had the truck yellow but it looked like a toy. I painted over with a dark grey and left some of the yellow showing. The story being they stole it from work and quickly painted over it
5:44 Jay: one of the things that make the genestealer cults special is that they are normal dudes with normal weaponary Gaurd: Am I a joke to you Cities of sigmar: Amatuers, complete Amateurs
love the paintjobs, nice speedy and grim, the models look somehow heavier. I just dislike hazard stripes. One part of this hobby that can go in the bin IMO.
I batch painted my Neophytes in one go... Dont do that. The good news is i don't have to paint any more Neophytes... Except on the ridge Runners and Trucks/Rock grinders
Jay has inadvertently used his years of experience with Black Templar to re-do his GSC. Black base, White zenithal, Black Contrast, Beige, Yellow Weapons with touches of Red.
I actually love that the two armies are connected and i don't see it as a downside. The cult is suppossed to be a revolution, not an fully organized organization like the Guard or Space marines. I also think they should bring back the limousnines.
6:05, you didn’t make a ridgerunner, you made another Goliath truck. It’s a geological survey vehicle with weapons mounted on it. It’s meant to quickly scrape across the surface of a world and assess the land, or do the same under the ground. It isn’t meant to carry people, that’s what the truck is for. It’s a scouting vehicle, and if the rock grinder can exits then a vehicle that exists in real life can also exist. The heavy stubber looks too intentional on your design, and the recon equipment is in the drivers seat, so you can either drive or survey. If you wanted a more industrial looking ridge runner you should have taken a look at what real geological survey vehicles look like and made a van with a gun affixed to the top.
Ive been thinking of starting a genestealer cult for forever... But i always felt like i wasnt good enough cause of the box art. This video inspired me to get some neophytes and start
I hope to one day become this good at painting/designing my miniatures for Warhammer. I just joined this hobby (doing Age of Sigmar because I liked fantasy but missed out on it) and am a brand new wargamer so new in fact that I cant seem to even put my models together correctly without messing up some random piece of plastic on them. Then I freak out and want to literally toss the unit and buy and entire new set but they are so expensive ughhhh I cant explain how frustrating it is. I know i need to be patient and eventually I will get better but even just starting out feels very hard and almost impossible to do....PS my painting sucks and I don't understand all the differences between contrast and speed painting or layers and bases...im hopeless but I wont give up...
6:23 Meanwhile the limo was better? Jay what do you expact from a normal dude working the mines in space to have? Like it looks just like every grounded yet still distant space rover... Isn't that what you want?
Having Imperial Guard armored vehicles does make sense for them. Seeing that they just infest everything on the planet. But making them stand out more would make them actually worth taking.
Love it! In my opinion GSC do improve so much when all the skin is skin-coloured, instead of the blue chitin parts from the box art. I understand why they are blue lore-wise, but it makes it nearly impossible to read the model.
Oh man I just started 40k with a gsc combat patrol and I'm almost done with the 20 Hybrid Neophytes. It was really hard to think of a cool color scheme. I thought about making them look like House Harkonnen from Dune and I still like the idea but then I'd just end up with a very dark and sad army so finally I painted thek blue like your old ones.... Now they look like a group of janitors 😂 I could easily swap the weapons with mops 😂😂😂

love the paintjobs, nice speedy and grim, the models look somehow heavier. I just dislike hazard stripes. One part of this hobby that can go in the bin IMO.
I batch painted my Neophytes in one go... Dont do that. The good news is i don't have to paint any more Neophytes... Except on the ridge Runners and Trucks/Rock grinders
Ive been set for life in neophytes & acoolytes but now im better at speedpainting and now i regret 17 year old me having so much freetime 😢
love the flesh color you chose! might try something similar for my cultists!
"Patience is required for greenstuff and I have none." Jay for President lol...🤣🤣🤣
Jay has inadvertently used his years of experience with Black Templar to re-do his GSC. Black base, White zenithal, Black Contrast, Beige, Yellow Weapons with touches of Red.
The mining drill looks like the machine specifically designed to crush Squidward
I actually love that the two armies are connected and i don't see it as a downside. The cult is suppossed to be a revolution, not an fully organized organization like the Guard or Space marines. I also think they should bring back the limousnines.
Really needed this for my own cult. Thanks, Jay!
Yep just joining in the love for Onitama! Would only recommend the sensei expansion but such a great game in a stand out box 😊
My initial thoughts on seeing/hearing blue gsc was "should add pockets, seams, buttons, and patches, turning them into JEANStealers
My GSC don’t use any ‘brood brothers’ - they have a red and yellow colour scheme that means they can be rebelling mcDs workers or socialists ;)
Just a right of passage. Lots of my early models are pretty rough too :D
Dune brought love back into the gsc, i want to paint them in black/white harkkonen
What a resurrection of an army! The vehicles look great as do the blips!
Minute you said "hackin and wackin" Fallout instantly came to mind XD
6:23 Meanwhile the limo was better? Jay what do you expact from a normal dude working the mines in space to have? Like it looks just like every grounded yet still distant space rover... Isn't that what you want?
Having Imperial Guard armored vehicles does make sense for them. Seeing that they just infest everything on the planet. But making them stand out more would make them actually worth taking.
Wow 😯 What a settt! Wet stickers look *Awesome* on your machinery 🤘
I've tried to like them as well, but I failed. Cool models and everything, but something was just missing. Weird
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO FOR SOOOO LONG GSC FOREVERRRRRR
Yo, the vehicles looking lid. Will they be on Onlygames after april? Got no printer
Your contrast paints look good - very soft and even (before any drybrushing I think). Any tips?
