    Question the c5 2.7t drive shaft center bearing jxb upgrade is nice but need alignment help 3213 is what the book shows for me but can't get the tool where did you get yours would that 3405 with shims work for mine

  • @yankybjeans
    @yankybjeans 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Maybe Im confused or not understanding things, but if you mark the alignment of the driveshaft at the front and the rear, and then you mark the middles when you replace the center bearing, and remove the alignment tool, then what exactly is the tool used for and how is it aligning anything? You lined the marks up yourself after the fact when reassembling and then reattached the tool, so at that point its out of any "alignment" that it may have had previously when the tool was locking everything in place. Is it just to keep things straight? I dont see how it can be keeping things aligned when you completely removed it. For example, when we do the timing belt maintenance on these cars, the cam lock bar is never removed during that process so that things stay aligned to each other. Marks wouldnt necessarily suffice.

    • @eliasgraf2692
      @eliasgraf2692 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The tool aligns the two pieces of the driveshaft to a straight line so that when the center bearing support mounting bracket is bolted to the car’s chassis, it is exactly in the middle of the transmission output and differential input yokes.
      So the alignment axis of the center bearing support is to either the left or right side of the car.
      The tool isn’t really needed until installing the driveshaft on the car, just happens to also hold everything together nicely when removing the two piece driveshaft assembly.

    I have a b5 01 s4 6spd. I have a bad feeling my center bearing is going out. Cars has 215k mi. If the center bearing is going out how much longer you think the DS u joints have? Believe it or not car is a daily driver. I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth changing the center bearing since I already have one or just getting a new unit cuz the rest is bound to fail as well. Also what do you recommend one-piece or OEM Style. These are only options i know of. Scotty at AA, DSS, etspec. I have the dss one piece on my b5 a4. Cant complain. But its 1200 now. And she isnt as crazy about big bucks on the car as i am, lol. Just did 2k on rack, all PS hoses and pump, and a long list of other stuff. And 3 months before that another few K, lol.

    • @JustinBallou01
      @JustinBallou01  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never had issues with the OEM driveshaft. I would replace the Center bearing ASAP. They make a clamp-on style now that is not very expensive to install. As for a Single Driveshaft; if the car is a daily, I suggest sticking to the OEM set-up.

    • @easycomeeasygo8901
      @easycomeeasygo8901 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JustinBallou01 thanks for replying. You did 700awhp on stock DS right? If thats the case they seem plenty strong. What about life span of the stock u joints? At 215k i can expect more life out of it? Id hate to change the center and have the u joints go. Not exactly a easy job without a lift.
      Are these DS neutral balanced? Meaning it technically shouldn't matter what position you install it right?

    So I got my tool from snap-on Audi The book called for 3213 and the adapters are 3139-3 I see an option for the same one that you got the 3405 which comes with the adapter shims but you bought the red extra set which look like the Porsche ones All of these adapters are discontinued so where did you get yours I am tired of this vibration for the last 3 months

    Some important issues missed here, like how to determine shim thickness. Check the Audi service manual, 10.4 - Adjusting propshaft!

    • @JustinBallou01
      @JustinBallou01  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don’t have to re-shim if you reuse the same driveshaft and everything is marked. If you get a remanufactured shaft, then yea, you need to shim, but I would also send that driveshaft and have balance checked one last time (remans have been known to be out of balance.) Having the right tools helps everytime.

    When you mark the orientation of the shaft it isn't forward to backward. You Can't put the shaft in backwards. Your supposed to mark the shaft
    in correlation to the
    trans and rear diff...

    • @JustinBallou01
      @JustinBallou01  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can mark it however you feel comfortable with. I marked mine up, even on the trans and diff so there was no question how it went back in….

    • @chiil034
      @chiil034 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mark the front and rear CV for the drive shaft, in relation to where it comes off the tranny/diff cups. Then he is also correct, when you re-install the drive shaft, you then have to make sure it's centered longitudinally. So slide it forward towards the tranny, mark it, then slide it back towards to diff, mark it. Then center.
