The Butterfly landing on the BMW emblem (3:15) was epic!!! It's evident the future is in electric. The i8 performance for the 1st edition is remarkable. Fuutre editions will close the gap if not better future petrol 911's.
I'm going to have test drive in I8 at the end of september. I have tried 991 carrera S PDK, sport chrono, in june and it was 0-160km/h (0-100mph) in 8.7 seconds. (repeated several times on VBOX) why does the same carrera with additional power kit is slower?
That was closer than I thought it would be. I wonder if it's acceleration is being effected by the economy tires preventing launch from putting down more torque.
Its Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome. Probably the most amazing place you can run a car in terms of whats actually around you. There are pretty much every type of aircraft from Jumbos through to Fighter randomly placed all around. Here's a La Ferrari running over 200MPH amongst them all if you have not seen it already. watch?v=j-qaEqFmxS8
It's annoying how every car reviewer sugar coats the i8 as being the essentially perfect sports car. It may have generally cheap running costs (petrol wise) as soon as something breaks on it your going to wishing you had bought your GTR/911. It's annoying how BMW are trying to pass this car off as a Hybrid sports car when it really is .. not. I would love to see these 2 in a track battle, just to see how much time the i8 loses to a 911.
After reading some if the comments below I am astounded at some peoples reaction to the i8. BMW should be applauded for producing a hybrid sports car, designed with the enthusiast in mind. While the i8 seems expensive when compared to cars of similar performance BMW has managed to mass produce technology previously (and very recently) seen only in extremely expensive limited run hypercars. In doing so they are making the sports car relevant for the future and keeping us driving enthusiasts happy in the process. The fact is that while we love our petrol RWD manual gearbox coupes we have to accept that soon all cars will be at least hybrids if not fully electric. Most other mass market hybrid and electric vehicles are designed like white goods with no effort made to appeal to the enthusiast. So unless you all want to be passengers in automated electric vehicles in the future we should applaud the attempts of companies like BMW with the i8 and Honda with the new NSX rather than rubbishing their efforts. Remember it costs billions to design and engineer these vehicles, if companies do not believe there is a market for a hybrid sports car then they will not develop them, which will ultimately lead to the death of the sports car, and possibly even to the death of a car that can be driven. That is not a future I want to live in.
Ah, now I know why EVO's numbers with the i8 are higher than Motor Trend's and Road & Track's (who both recorded 3.8sec sprints to 60 by simply stomping on the gas from a stop).
These guys don't understand how torque relates to bhp relates to speed. In the end on ONE thing matters: the torque on wheels. Engine torque is a completely irrelevant number since the torque is reduced changed by the gearbox. There are two ways to increase the torque delivered to the wheels: making the engine rev higher, which allows for more favourable gear-ratios, or indeed, increase engine torque. The best number to compare two cars without actually testing it, is by comparing BHP, since both revs as torque are in that number.
The BMW i8 is the biggest FAKE in automotive history. It's a 3-cylinder goat which can be driven a couple of miles with electric power. When the batteries are empty the remaining 231 - 1,5L - 3cyl. hp sound like a Daihatsu Charade GTI from `87. Nothing innovative, not a so called ‘Supercar’ at all - just a toy for rich west coast hipster-nerds.
Bruningable i just love it when people have nothing smarter to say so they go straight to the gamer thing.. yeah, i guess it's a sin using your account you previously used for gaming 5 years ago.
I rented an i8 from Sixt in Germany and lived with it for 3 weeks. It's a great touring car. People react to it with interest and curiosity rather than envy and resentment. This becomes a big issue if you're driving a Gallardo or something a bit ostentatious as your daily driver... The major issue I had was with fuel tank size. If you drive it as you would drive your Carrera or other sports car you will be in the gas station every hour when doing autobahn driving. No matter what tricks you play, it takes a lot of energy to accelerate a car from 120kph/70mph to 250kph/155mph repeatedly. As fun as it is to feel the electric instant torque come on it gets annoying to deal with the tiny fuel tank. I think they are resolving this for the 2018 i*. Already looking forward to booking my next one form Sixt in the SUmmer. Oh, and if you are aiming for supercar status then get rid of the 250kph/155mph speed limiter. I got passed by a Boxster while maxed in the i8...
The peak tq isn't important during a launch control, coz the Porsche rev more than 6000rpm from the line, which is hp vs hp and no way the i8 can get away from Porsche PDK transmission.
Interesting but it would have been better to have put the i8 against a standard carrera rather than a carrera s with power kit. Those cars would, I imagine, be quite evenly matched in performance terms.
I think the point would be economy. Bearing that in mind why not compare it to something with similar combined MPG? I don't know what that would be - an Alpina D3, maybe - but I think a race based on efficiency would be good to see in todays climate.
***** "their products are over-priced and over-rated" please tells us how many Porches you have driven to come to such conclusion. If Porsche was over rated and over priced than I doubt every critic claim their products to be one of the best. BTW, driving one in Need for speed doesn't count. Oh and speaking of avatars, at least mine actually looks like something you could recognise, unlike yours.
should have used a base 911 for comparison. obviously you pay for the green credentials with the i8 so when it comes to performance it should be compared to a cheaper car.
Honestly, everything about this car seems awesome...other than the price. Although if we can have a non-hybrid version with a straight 6 in it...maybe port the one from the m4...
Woah! So much hate for i8 here in the comments?!? It's a new breed people. Light, economic sports car. People bring cars like Porsche 918 and McLaren P1 to talk here but they're astronomically priced hypercars. This is something that anyone can buy.
I like the butterfly that lands on the i8 at 3:13, highlighting it's eco friendly nature haha In any case- Porsche all day. I'd take a base 991 Carrera over the F80/F82 any day.
This car is impressive just by being there. Is a showtech car, and i have no doubt it would be on par or even beat the standard 911. As far as this race goes, as soon as i heard that the Porsche has 4 wheel drive, i knew it was over. But the I8 is still an impressive ride.
The BMW i8's starting price is £99,895.00 in the UK with a realistic on road price for the model shown here of £112,545.00 at least. The Porsche 911s on the other hand with the additional powerkit and Sports Design package as shown is £95,764.00, that's £17,000 less for a car which has far more prestige and as we just saw more performance. Yes the i8 is a hybrid and shows the way cars are going, but to be honest I personally think BMW is asking too much money for it when you consider what £100,000 plus could buy you elsewhere.
Cole Jones Maybe you want to read it again? £112,545.00 written out is: One hundred & twelve five thousand five hundred forty five pounds. Maybe look where the , & . are placed next time.
I still did not have seen someone sugesting LS swap into i8 . But I would like to see some super-high rewing 4 cylinder bike engine in i8 like Jaguar did in ther hybrid supercar . Like Americans are used to crossplane V8 , I like more 4 cylinder than 3 cylinder .
I don't understand why they compare it to a Porsche 911. The figures are maybe similar, but the purpose behind very different. The Porsche is a sport car, built as this. But I see the i8 more like a gran tourer made for cruising, not revving. Comparing it to a Maserati Granturismo or an Aston Martin would have been more relevant. BTW, what a great car this I8!
+Mulkyan lmao a "bus length" is a common measurement in racing when a car gets completely gapped. usually it's used when "car length" won't cover how bad it got smoked.
it's incredible how far 0.8 seconds is.. the i8 is impressive and shows that there is future of sports car despite all the euro norms and hybrid/electric power
Awesome video. Before everyone poopoos the i8, let's all just remember that this is only the first of hopefully many generations, and that Porsche have been at this for 50 years.
Why do so many people hate this i8? It's amazing (better than a Porsche of course). 1. It likes it just rolled out of a showroom which means it looks amazing and just as amazing as a supercar in terms of flamboyancy. 2. Just because it's got a similar hybrid system compared to the three hypercars does not mean it's going to get you from Germany to the British GP on time in 30mins! 3. It IS a sports car for those who say it's not! 0-60 in 4.5secs? That's pretty sporty let alone fast I think. 4. Why are you surprised it sounds feelingless? It's electric above all else! So seriously, do you think a car love will buy this? Is it a true drivers car? Are you going to enjoy it? More than likely... No! It will sell to rich people most likely looking to stand out and show off. They probably won't even know a thing or two besides the obvious reasons that it looks cool and it's about $100k. The point is it's an achievement. Full stop.
The i8 was closer than I thought it would be. It is an impressive car. It is not however a sports car. Having said that, introduce corners into the test and the i8 would fall much further behind the 991. A drag battle / comparison with a base 3.4 Carrera would hardly be fair: the base Carerra is much, much cheaper than the i8. Even so, a base Carerra would be faster than an i8 round a circuit or driven hard cross country.
Very good I8 !! Very close. But if you want 100% performance, for the same money you have better options (Nissan GT-R for example). Although not so high tech or neither so fuel efficiency. I would go for the BMW I8, almost the same figures, but in a unique a special car!
The rear tires of the Porsche are wider than all the 4 tires of the i8 so no wonder it has such a good traction and remember the engine position which also helps the 911 to have such good traction. i8 is a very good first attempt at hybrid sports cars. In a few years with better and more powerful batteries I guess it can do even better. But for now the Porsche is simply a step above i8. At least the Carrera S.
The 911 represents 50 years of development, the i8 has been out for 4 months. Imagine how much performance the next gen BMW hybrid will offer whilst the 91 has to cope with even stricter emissions laws
Not fair. The BMW should have raced cars having power close to its own ie 357 bhp. As some people said a Cayman is the closest competitor in terms of power. As for price......you dont pay that much money for racecar performance. You pay that much money for its sophistication. It can go 48 kilometres on a litre of petrol with both petrol and electric motors working. BMW wanted to get an eco friendly hybrid car. Incidentally they also got a good sportscar.
Seems like bmw attempted copying the 918 and the p1's success with hybrid technology and performance improvements, however they ended up half-assing it.
Well I hate to say it but I'm quite impressed by the i8. It was never going to win but didn't disgrace itself. Pat on the back for BMW! However I fear it wont do so well in the handling dept?
Menos de segundo de diferença no final para um carro híbrido ! BMW I8 é incrível ! Less than a second apart at the end for a hybrid car! BMW I8 is amazing! Weniger als eine Sekunde auseinander am Ende für ein Hybridfahrzeug! BMW i8 ist erstaunlich!
I AIN'T BUYING AN i8 UNTIL THEY IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE, MAKE IT FASTER!!! I KNOW Y'ALL SEE THESE VIDS. I'LL HAVE TO GO WITH THE 2019 i8, IT'LL BE FASTER BY THEN..
Should get?! This is the time it gets. Therefore this is the time it does. It's a fucking automatic. A 100 year old granny with no arms could get it to 60mph in the same time.
Damn, i wasn't expecting the 911 to beat the i8 by THAT much surely the i8 should have launched better being 4wd and having more torque available....a lot of which is there instantly...
+mazin2892 Hybrid is still a new technology. Porsche have been perfecting the 911 for many decades. Think about it there was 911 in the 80s with 4 second 0-60s. The 918 is a sign of where it will all go some day. So in 20 years time a standard 911 will be like a 918 today. I cannot possible imagine what a 918 of the future will be like though. Are we going to hit a performance bottle neck and these cars will not be going any faster. Such as physics dictates.
This car is not built for speed. It's a hybrid, it has an electrical motor. Of course the Porsche will win. If i buy this car , i'd buy it for the way it looks , and mostly for daily use, not for racing. Whoever is complaining that the i8 sucks , why are you here ? Go buy a Porsche.
I call foul. Motor Trend tested an i8 and got it to do 3.8 seconds 0-60 mph and the 1/4 mile in the mid 12s. Both times that would have beaten the 911. Retest!
That little butterfly, at the end, landing on the BMW badge was a nice touch.
Stop the BS and give us what we want to see!.. P1 VS 918 VS LaFerrari!
real talk!
They tried that on the magazine, Ferrari wouldn't allow them to have a LaFerrari for a comparison
MTC0316 Ferrari is the douchebag of cars
You forgot the Rimac One... XD Still I want to see it...
Diego De León
I really want to see someone put a M4 engine into the i8
Or M5 engine.
Way to big.
SaKuLification Probably.
an M4 not 'a M4'
katgolds30 A,E,I,O,U my friend. do you even grammar?
A 1st year first generation i8 versus a 911 with over 50 years of development. A pretty close race in my opinion
The Butterfly landing on the BMW emblem (3:15) was epic!!!

Sounds like a you problem when every car reviewer is giving this thing praise. It's a hybrid sports car whether you like it or not.

Power = Torque x Revs x some_constant
What are the prices for these two in britain?
What's up with the intact plane in the middle of the woods?
Tell me I'm not the only one who saw a BUTTERFLY land on the hood of the i8....that's ridiculous. lol!
Can someone explain the plane please? 2:31.

wow, so much nonsense in one comment, i'm impressed.
Failed trolling boy!
The ICE essentially recharges the electric battery. So if you drive it on hybrid mode, you would have quite a range with the electric battery.
CroGamer1 Oh - Mr. Gamer - hello first voice of the i8's target group...
Bruningable i just love it when people have nothing smarter to say so they go straight to the gamer thing.. yeah, i guess it's a sin using your account you previously used for gaming 5 years ago.
What's the price of the i8 BMW?
Why do you measure in mph and quarter mile but then go to standing kilometer?
Great video, couldn't have been more informative. Well done. I have to hand it to BMW, that's a damn impressive and innovative auto mobile.
Finally someone who isn't a moron in this comment section.
doodlemonoply Yo... Doodlemonoply from GTP and GT6? Pretty sure I know you bro.
Yup. 'Tis me.

How do these two beasts compare in weight, and PW/Ratio?
i8 Weighs 75kgs more (357hp vs 430hp basically)
Thanks
Ducktail on the Porsche looks sumptuous
Try that against a Panamera hybrid, they booth are similar is propulsion, cost.
The peak tq isn't important during a launch control, coz the Porsche rev more than 6000rpm from the line, which is hp vs hp and no way the i8 can get away from Porsche PDK transmission.
what was the song in the background?
Interesting but it would have been better to have put the i8 against a standard carrera rather than a carrera s with power kit. Those cars would, I imagine, be quite evenly matched in performance terms.
theres no way a hybrid fridge is gona win against 1 of the best porsches in recent memory
i knew it
Guess that's why it was as fast as a normal 911.
***** dont blame me for being a fan i actually own one, a Porsche that is
kraenk12 but it costs double the amount of a standard Porsche 911. The gt3 is even cheaper and WAY more powerful.
Amazingly, the BMW i8 with 20 inch wheels is 4 grand more in the UK (against a 911 S w/ PDK, PP and Sports Design). I guess that makes this test fair?
Motortrend measured 3.8 to 60. There's a pretty big difference between 3.8 and 4.5
I think the point would be economy. Bearing that in mind why not compare it to something with similar combined MPG? I don't know what that would be - an Alpina D3, maybe - but I think a race based on efficiency would be good to see in todays climate.
That's not bad at all for the i8. Btw, love the butterfly touch in the end :)
there is no substitute for Porsche

I don't think anybody was remotely surprised at the result.
i think with a manual you could do a way more agressive launching with AWD than with this
maybe theyll take out another engine option next year
The BMW i8's starting price is £99,895.00 in the UK with a realistic on road price for the model shown here of £112,545.00 at least. i8 is almost identical to cayman S in terms of acceleration, just went back to watch cayman s vs caterham 140, amazing both 911 and i8
wow...I actually don't care if the bmw lost by a small margin, the last sentence wins me over. congrats bmw.
But the BMW still lost? Lol. Once again a loser of a car, and the bottom of its segment.
Charlie Long haha Charlie Long typed this from his 1997 corolla :) ahahahaha

I really want to see GT2 RS vs aventador s
How much HP has the i8?
Ok
+Shellinz yaad mon Thats it? The P85D only has 478HP and destroys it
F40 vs. 959, perhaps???
it should be compared basic carrera vs BMW I8
911 would smoke that too!
I love to an I8 if I ever win the lotto. Nice lookin ride
2:30 crashed plane wtf
Next episode: drag racing a Booster GTS and a Prius... Bonkers
0:33 the rear end of the i8 is actually a 911 end. its like the i8 ate an 911
incredibly good looking porsche, a really hot car that is better looking in person then on here or in a magazine.
As a Porsche fan, I was secretly rooting for the i8 on this one :P
this is true idea😊
Nam-Myoho-Rengue-Kyo 🙏🏻
The Top Gear i8 vs M4 seem to have a got a much better time from the i8.
I AIN'T BUYING AN i8 UNTIL THEY IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE, MAKE IT FASTER!!! I KNOW Y'ALL SEE THESE VIDS. I'LL HAVE TO GO WITH THE 2019 i8, IT'LL BE FASTER BY THEN..
Put it against the Tesla P85+ ....please...please.
Again poor times. 911 should get around 12-12.2 and i8 12.4-12.6 in 400m.
But last week WRX was terrible.
maybe they cant proper start cars?
Should get?! This is the time it gets. Therefore this is the time it does. It's a fucking automatic. A 100 year old granny with no arms could get it to 60mph in the same time.
I think some of you are missing the point of this car. It's cars like this that's the starting point of a new generation of cars
Which one will you pick?
Both are amazing sports cars ,but I got my favorite.....
Guess???;)
:)
anyone else notice how theres a destroyed plane in the forest at 2:30
Noah Murphy I noticed, it wasn't too hard to see it because the BMW was so slow! xD
Damn, i wasn't expecting the 911 to beat the i8 by THAT much
surely the i8 should have launched better being 4wd and having more torque available....a lot of which is there instantly...
+mazin2892
Hybrid is still a new technology.
"not today..not in my house"..lmao
the i8 motortrend tested should have beat the 911 or tied it
Since the i8 is all wheel drive, I think the 4S would be the better choice for this comparison.
Carrera S with power kit does 1/4 mile in 12.8 sec???? thats slower than a M4.
Silly comparison. Why not a 911 Carrera? The stats don't add up to compare these two.
911 Carrera would spank it too!
Retest!
Damn that put bmw back into its place but I would all ways have the i8 what a stunning car to look at🏎🏎
Next drag battle; Porsche 911 Carrera S v Tesla Model S Performance
