Justin and I met up so I could review the 2020 C8 Corvette and he could drive my BMW i8 for the first time. He made some great observations. When comparing, BMW i8 vs C8 Corvette, he noticed some similarities. But, he also noticed some very strange things as well. Being a hybrid platform with a front motor and mid-engine, the BMW i8 is like nothing else on the road and drives differently than any other BMW. Getting in and getting out of the BMW i8 is also much different, but not impossible. Check this video out to see Justin's 2015 BMW i8 review.

Definitely a surprising car. I'm not a huge BMW fan but the i8 is such a departure from the typical BMW that it's actually pretty awesome!

The charm of real sports cars does not come from 0-60, horse powers numbers or even how big your cylinders is...
The charm comes from the Design (Look) and the Noise...period
Sports car means a ground-up designed 2 seat soft or no top with racing power. Neither of these are sportcars.

Living near the BMW plant I have seen a few i8's on the roads. I always thought they look really sweet. I have driven M5's, M3's, and X5M's at the BMW track, which was fun, all decent cars. They have an i8 there, but was not part of our track event. It was not until this video that I decided to look at reviews. Ironic to read Car & Driver criticizing the BMW for cheap plastic interior, that is typically the comment for Corvettes!
C8 is definitely a low 4 sec car, it seems to take forever to 60 in this clip, but with two big dudes, 5-6 secs is understandable. Thats about right for the low HP. Not even CLOSE to a supercar. And the bad handling is a non-starter. The lack of wheel spin is because the motor is low on torque.
It's a sports car tht looks awesome & gets great gas mileage. It can get 0-60 under 4. If they wanted to put a big ICE in it they could've for cheaper but tht is OPPOSITE it's intent. It's basically saying "we're going electric but don't worry it's still gonna be fun." Ever notice how all speed complaints come from ppl tht havent been it or before they have? After driving or riding in it they all say "wow it's fast."

In a parallel universe, Pat bought a Chevorlet C8 Corvette... nice, but I think the BMW i8 is the choice for me. Being able to dodge GM's Chevorlet Ignition Switch and recall problems, while also being able to drive to the grocery store for free with hybrid batteries instead of getting13 mpg city from a V8 is the icing on the cake.
I am very scared of expensive out of warranty BMW repair/maintenance costs due to unreliability, poor durability, low quality, and low affordability in low volume European cars; but I hope this car appreciates just due to how beautiful it is.

Nah you can get a C8 for 75k rn . The Msrp is 60k tho so you’re still getting taxed but it’s the best value in sports cars rn . For the same price you could get a slow out of warranty i8 you can get a much faster v8 mid engine car. There’s really no car that compares price , power etc to the C8 . Especially being mid engine. You could get like a mid range M car or AMG but they don’t look nearly as exotic. I just wish it had butterfly doors
c8 simple pushrod v8 in the right place, most likely much less maintenance.
Another great upload Pat. I enjoyed the add'l noise you're getting in the cockpit now. Justin seemed to really enjoy driving it. The performance of the i8 is nothing to sneeze out. Have you ever speculated what the i8 would be like, or what it's potential would be if had a six cylinder engine? Hearing you talk about the "electrics" and how the batteries are charged, does the i8 effectively have a setup similar to the KERS setup on the Formula cars? Save the Wave👋🏿
Thanks Peter. KERS is similar to the i8, in when you let off the pedal on the i8, the front wheels are now driving the electric motor so it acts as a generator, which stores power. It's possible to drive the car on Hold State of Charge, which forces the car to only propel using the mid-engine, and every time you go downhill or brake, it's storing more energy. The highest capacity the battery will store is the equivalent of 20mi of range. I did that on a trip from Buffalo, NY to MD. All the hills really helped build up energy.

The fact a c8 owner says this car shifts smoother and picks up just as fast....absolutely my next car! Just a shame it has so many issues. Ugh. I guess it will be worth it right? 😅
I wouldn't own an i8 outside of warranty or have 10k in cash for potential catastrophic repairs.

I'm not sure if Justin really enjoyed his ride but i8 was going to be the car I would have bought had I not like the Corvette C8 when it came out.
He was really surprised by it. It's not his preference but it was more than he expected. I think this highlights what the e-ray experience might be like with electric motors assisting the mid engine C8.
A plus the i8 has 4 seats
