I just can't believe they pulled off animating rumbling. it's a hell to animate. hayashi and his team are mad lads. the people who are complaining that it took so much time don't know the shitshow we would've gotten with less time and studios with bad 3dcg. this gives me a little bit hope that one day we can get a good berserk adaptation.
I heavily doubt a good berserk adaptation, literally no studio wants to adapt that thing, it's a hellish thing to adapt. And the studios probably can't simplify the drawing enough so that they still look good so I guess nobody is doing the job anytime soon.
@Noctislolig I mean yeah you can adapt berserk but this time a really proper schedule is needed with artists skilled enough to understand how much they can simplify in order to make the animation look good. Edit: an example of a part which was nearly impossible to adapt was the battle of heaven and earth in AoT, but it still got a masterful adaptation because of proper schedule and amazing artists. I'm saying that the same should be for Berserk.
The Titan at 2:45 in the video is actually 3d-2d hybrid, the abs section and the head are 2d but drawn so fucking well it’s easier to assume it’s a part of the 3d model. The only thing that gives it away is the linework shifting if you look really close. There’s tons of this throughout the episode
At 4:05 I’m not so sure but the linework appears to suggest that they’re actually traced 3d models. Why they would do this I have no idea, maybe it’s just artefacts from the models being small.
Really glad to excited for your video cuz I have absolutely no idea how Hayashi & his team were able to pull this special off. They really deserve the praise.
Also i don’t know if you noticed but the first three mins of the episode which feature the recap of the epic ending of the previous episode already contained a change (Beast titan’s eyes) and an improvement (CGI scene of Beast Titan about to throw rocks). That’a because they had 7 months to polish the prevous ep which also means that when the episodic format arrives on November 19 we might see improvements across the board for the previous special.
Animation-wise S4 P3 is absolutely my fav out of the series. S1 is much less flawed, but the highs of the last 2 parts are something I didn't believe were possible to do. The rumbling scenes alone are a highlight of the medium for me. For the most part I absolutely felt the weight of characters, the speed of action, the scope of the scene and the dread in the atmosphere (rumbling and Eren's final transformation). Funnily enough the scene that made me the most emotional was Imai's sequence. Knowing that it was him animating the final and the best ODM scene, felt surreal. My criticisms (animation-wise) are pretty minor: -Digital lines. I am either positive or neutral about them for like 90% of scenes (becoz AOT has mostly pretty "intense" scenes whether emotional or action) but they absolutely take away from those few "beautiful" and "calm" scenes (Zeke-Armin, Cabin, Eren-Armin). -The Eren-Armin convo felt very "cheap" compared to the rest of ep. Too much off-model Eren, pretty basic compositing, nothing special direction-wise. The character acting was gr8, and some drawings looked were extremely detailed. But considering, its a "climax" scene, it does leave more to be desired. Ranking the parts from strictly Animation perspective : S4P3(both)>S1>S4P2>S2>S4P1>S3P1>S3P2 I have always preferred the newer artstyle much MUCH more than the older one. I also have a bias towards S4P1 coz I just like it a lot. Extemely thankful to the Hajime Isayama, the animators at Wit and Mappa, Yuichiro Hayashi, Hiroyuki Sawano, Kohta Yamamoto, all the VA's (probably the strongest voice acting in any series, ever) and every SINGLE person involved in the making of this series. It has flaws, pretty visible flaws, but goddamn if it isn't the closest thing to PERFECTION I have witnessed.
"I have always preferred the newer artstyle much MUCH more than the older one." AOT with WITS style was masterful, i can see a world where mappas style was on par if they had like, TRIPLE the amonut of time for compositing and art design, because the 'roughness' of mappas style has potential. But WIT's effortless look is unmatched, atleast for s1 and s2. s3 they got crushed by the schedule.

I knew going into this finale that the conclusion to AOT was going to be one of the most ambitious and hard to execute finales in anime history. The sheer insanity at the end of the manga, the scale of it all and the amount of moving parts definitely were a reason why Isayama himself apologized to the production team for how difficult it was going to be. Overall, this was an incredibly produced finale. Under Isayama's help with the script, they even improved the elements in the final chapter that I had mixed feelings about. I can say I left this final episode much more satisfied than I did its corresponding manga chapters. Thank you to Studio WIT, Studio MAPPA, and Hajime Isayama!
