Okay; if you would permit me, let me challenge that whole notion about Dandadan not meaningfully grounding its characters in reality until around episode 5; because I don't think that's true at all. I think what happens with a show like Dandadan is that people watching get so distracted by the chaos onscreen, that perhaps they are unable to immediately parse the organic character work on display amidst it all. Hell, even in those prior 4 eps, there were copious amounts of time where the show stops to breathe. For example, Ep 1 of Dandadan starts off energetic, but absolutely everything about its first half is nothing but grounding the characters. Right in the beginning, we see Momo, a brash, head-strong teenager demonstrating admirable empathy when she sees Okarun getting bullied; and its from this point here especially that the ball gets rolling with the character storytelling. In that one act, we're informed on the shades of personality that make her likable and relatable, as well as establishing the buy-in for how a person like her is capable of demonstrating the emotional intelligence that she does in the interactions she'll have with others (namely Okarun) later on. Then, after Momo and Okarun dare each other to go the occultic locations matching their opposing beliefs, we're literally treated to a whole segment dedicated to Momo being vulnerable to Okarun (and by extension, the audience), which serves as the means to ground her beliefs on ghosts in something that isn't what you’d typically expect like a fanatic obsession or an inexplicable experience. No crazy, wacky hijinks or anything: just somber reflection illustrative of Momo's belief in ghosts as she justifies it through the relationship she has with her grandma and the closeness she earns to rekindle with her; you don't get any more grounded than that. And the best part of it all is the way in which the storytelling transforms that sentimentality and catalyzes it into empowering action, circling back that meditation on the love Momo has for her grandma and making it the impetus to the unlocking of her latent psychic powers, providing her the means to defeat the aliens and save Okarun. In just 1 episode, Dandadan demonstrates how to make thoughtful writing decisions based on logical and well-emphasized cause and effect interactions, emotions, and happenstances between characters and plot details; doing so while also oscillating between wacky, quiet, absurd, deranged, and wholesome moments without losing the efficaciousness of those strong storytelling precepts. I would say we can see, pinpoint, and quantify all these aspects quite reliably upon watching, so I don't think its quite accurate to say that Dandadan first few eps don't have enough to chew on or that what it tries to sell itself on is superficial chaos. I understand the chaotic window-dressing of the show turning people off, and that said chaos being pulled back makes it easier to see the character work happening under the hood, but I don't think there was ever a problem for Dandadan to solve in the first place because it was already doing the things you claimed it wasn't in it's first 4 episodes. If you (and others) disagree with my take, that's cool; just felt like putting that perspective out there
Dandadan does something that most shonen series have neglected to do since one piece, it allows you to live with the characters and see their relationship develop through both the high octane action, but more importantly through the low points of the story by building a dynamic based on subtle character writing within low stakes situations.
@ i did say “most” but Gintama is also really good at this too. Most series are afraid of cancellation and so they sacrifice character interactions for the sake of plot progression, but those are 3 really good examples of just letting characters rock and tell that someone in a compelling way
Unfortunately, ORB is another underrated anime in the West. Its unique setting, compelling characters, and narratives make it fun to watch. I wish it had more of an audience here.
Also, I enjoy Dan Da Dan from the very first episode, but it is true that has a quite chaotic pace, so chapters like 5 and part of 3 and 6 are necessary, which is why I am surprised by the criticism towards CSM's anime, since the the adaptation just solved the chaotic pace of the manga giving time to breathe and explore the characters and their interactions. In every story it is necessary to have breaks to appreciate better the great moments.
I agree 100% on the dandadan take because I felt the same way from the first 3 or so episodes. I actually liked the fire force ending it was ambitious and out there but it was also extremely wholesome and heartwarming. Also about the “held back by demographic” take I can somewhat see and agree. But I like the fact that the realism gets blended with the shonen ridiculousness. On one hand there’s the people than can enjoy the action and comedy and just have a genuinely fun time and on the other there’s the people like me (or you maybe) that can dissect the themes and characters and appreciate Ohkubo-sensei’s writing
I’ve been loving the show as a non manga reader and episode 7 was genuinely one of the most beautiful heart wrenching episodes of anime I’ve ever watched, don’t get how anyone can not love this show

Dandadan's pacing is just right and feels natural in progression especially how it handled the characters.
I’m surprised it took you 5 episodes to actually like dandadan. Right from episode 1, the characters and their chemistry, music, direction, were wayy too charming for it to be written off to be chaotic.
