I agree. It's weird to me when people say "it was all pointless".
The point wasn't to stop humans from being human. People will always find reasons to have conflict.
The point was to erase the power of the Titans from the world and even the playing field so to speak.

14:10 is the most important point that a lot of people missed.
Season 4 Eren didn't know he would be stopped at 80% at all, the only thing he knew is that he would start the rumbling, only after he got the full power of the founder that he knew that.

    • @SuperBadadan
      @SuperBadadan 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

That's bullshit. He knew from the beginning he would be stopped and the titan curse would end. He literally said so to Zeke, Mikasa and Armin in flashback conversations.
Not to mention, the reason he managed to convince Ymir to help him was because he promised her freedom and an end to her curse. He knew his actions would free her and therefore could make that claim with complete confidence.

      @zachariemelanson485 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

@@SuperBadadan What do you mean by "from the beginning?" Do you mean episode 1? or from kissing Historia's hand?
Eren saw a glimpse of the rumbling When he kissed Historia, but he only saw what he sent to Grisha as memories. The moment when he saw everything and knew he would be stopped was after he told Ymir she was free to chose for herself and she decided to give him the founder's power.
When Eren said "I'll put an end to this world! Give me your strength!" he only meant that's what he would do with the power... and he saw that the rumbling would happen so sure he was confident that she'd give him access to the founder, but he only knew the rumbling would happen. Nothing shows us he knew he would be stopped or knew how anything would end...
"He literally said so to Zeke, Mikasa and Armin in flashback conversations": I don't know what you mean by flashback conversations... Do you mean the conversations in the paths in the final chapter? Because those happened after he got the founder's power... Any episode numbers and timestamp to show me he said he would be stopped?

    • @SuperBadadan
      @SuperBadadan 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

@@zachariemelanson485 Eren literally laid out his plan to Armin and Mikasa. He told the two of them in the firing range, the reason why the world hates them was because Eldians can transform into titans, so he needs to buy them some time for Armin to show the world they were just people. It was RIGHT after the Liberio raid. You could argue "oh it was just Eren theorizing" but if you take the knowledge that Eren knew the future, then it's less theory and more Eren telling everyone else, including the audience what his plan was. The same thing with his talk with Zeke. "I will end this 2000 year old history of titans," he says.
Plus, what you said about Ymir makes no sense. Eren promised Ymir liberation from being stuck in the Paths. He wasn't saying he would put an end to the physical world, why would Ymir care about that? He was actually saying he would end the world of titans from the beginning. You're delusional if you think otherwise.

Eren "crying like a bi*ch" is a human emotion as he is 19 and the one who cared for him the most is about to move on without him. Though, she knew she wouldn't forget him, Eren didn't know about that and was worried that the only person who loved him other than a friend, is about to move on from him. Therefore, it's in Eren's character to cry and burst out because he didn't want to be forgotten or to die

I also think Eren was born with 2000 years worth of humanity's rage. After he saves mikasa in the battle of trust, she literally says that "it feels like humanity's rage" in a titan.
Eren is the last attack titan. He's also has access to the founding titan. When Ymir's soul got separated into 9, parts of her were split was well.
I believe that, like any human, she also felt incredible amounts of rage even if they were suppressed when she was alive. Its only understandable after what she went through. Eren is the product of that rage being unattended for 2000 years . Why did he do the rumbling? He doesn't know. He just... wanted to do it. I believe that's his, and the attack titan's version of the curse of ymir: He was a slave to the fact the he was born with all this rage. He was a kid and yet he spoke like he was a slave for all this time and only had freedom in his mind. Of course, he also has his own life and his own perspectives as an individual character - I'm not saying that Ymir made his whole character or something. It's feels more like they "needed" each other to reach their goals. Eren needed Ymir's power, while she was waiting for 2000 years for someone to fight for her freedom as well. I have a lot more I could say but I felt like blurting this out lol
anyways nice video and it's nice to see someone appreciating the ending of AOT more as something that's complicated and might be hard to understand as opposite to just call it lazy writing and calling it a day

Incredible video, i already did liked the ending for AOT. However, i still had couple of doubts mainly regarding ymir and mikasa but your video or to say your interpretation surely helped filling in those doubts that i originally had. It made me appreciate the ending even more. I still think the ending of AOT is bit too ambiguous for its own good especially for the average viewer, but it is a show which always required utmost attention while watching and critical thinking while understanding it, hence the rewatch value of this show just makes it ever so special. This is probably your best video yet.

  • @yatharthrai4658
    @yatharthrai4658 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

My man, THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST ATTACK ON TITAN VIDEO I HAVE EVER SEEN (and trust me I have seen a lot of them). You almost articulated each and every thought I had for the ending in these 19 min. Also for me, Eren was the most difficult part to figure out, and I m sure I have got my answers. Seriously, kudos to you.
Going to write my remaining thoughts about the ending :
    - Firstly, I agree with the fact that for a series that has been so airtight, the ending does leave a lot of things open to interpretation and vague. This can certainly be confusing for a first-time viewer (it was for me).
    - That being said, the thing I find the most hilarious is the fact that for all the questions about freedom and life that the show raises, people want the answers to "How Eren became colossal?" or "what happened to the worm thingy?" or "Did Mikasa die a Virgin or was she married to Jean". I mean these are the parts that you feel like needed answers...really?
    -Mikasa/Ymir and importance of Scarf-
I have seen people claiming that she should have thrown away the scarf, and I disagree. Callback to S1 E6 when Eren "dies" and Mikasa decides its not worth living. She regains strength when she realizes that she can still remember Eren through the "memories" that they shared together. Similarly, after killing him, the scarf is a reminder of those "good times" and maybe "cabin memories" (not sure). Same with Ymir. Had she been brave enough to let Fritz die, she would still have the reminder of the "good aspects" of their relationship in the form of her daughters. This is the part that could have had a better buildup, but certainly has a perfect conclusion.
    -Historia wasted-
I wonder if Isayama wanted to make the farmer this mysterious character, or was this just the fandom thing. Anyways, I thought there would be some shenanigans with power being transferred to a newborn, but none of it happening was...much more beautiful. Historia led a life based on her choices without anything being imposed on her, which was a direct result of her arc in S3. Idk from where the people are getting this idea that she was wasted.
-Lines such "Only Ymir knows", "it was Mikasa", "I'm an idiot" certainly look like bad writing if you haven't watched the ep or show at all. Almost all of these get answered in like the same ep. Eren is not a character you might see in the top 10 protagonist/antagonist/smartest etc list, coz that's not what Isayama was creating. Him being a "slave to freedom" (as pretentious as it might sound) does explain A LOT. What is being free? Walking down a path that says "freedom" or being able to actually see the other paths that exist.
In the end, you can have your criticisms of ending, but saying that the ending is trash is...objectively wrong (just like Genocide is wrong) lol. Even if it somehow ruins the series for you, find happiness in the fact that the majority are enjoying your once fav series.

I think wanting to know where the worm thing went is important to some degree, since it could try to imprint on another human again and start the whole cycle again. Was waiting for this.
I cannot express this sentiment enough, but thank you. Your interpretations, however rooted they were in the way you perceived the story helped push my own understanding of it to a much more lucid and level headed stage.
Attack On Titan has had a great influence on me, as for many others. From my hesitation back in the day to watch it due to the multitude of people finding the need to instantly say, "It's a geat show, you have to watch it!", when asked about it, to beginning to watch it because my brother recommended it to me, I have found myself in awe at every step of the way. From the writing, to the score, to the way the story beats would evolve and the genre itself changing. I felt I just couldn't go without talking about it.
And there began the onslaught. The wave of ideas, theories, opinions, doubts, concerns and straight up complaints regarding even minor subtleties. By the time I realised how deep I had fallen, in having contributed to the conversations via attempts to defend the story and continuing to show my appreciation for it, the wave of voices regarding simply the ending had drowned out any excitement I had left for passionate discussion.
So, this video felt like a long time coming. I was anxious to hear your thoughts on the subject, unfiltered and decisive. Because even when I rewatch this video, as I have already done multiple times since the upload, I cannot help but feel happy that there are those who genuinely appreciate the story as much as I do and can form their own coherent interpretations on it's many moments, controversial or otherwise.
Great video 👍✨. I would love to hear more of your thoughts on other stories and perhaps, actually most definitely, revisting AOT some time again in the future

Good video, you have some interesting interpretations! I have some counterpoints that I'd like to share:
1:52 Zeke is a genius who spent half an eterenity in the paths up to that point. No way did "small things in life can be precious" not occur to him earlier. And somehow the previous titan shifters needed to hear this first before deciding to help their former comrades, tf?
3:04 that's kind of a cop-out and head canon, I'd say it was a plothole
16:10 adding to this, it was also the only option that he could accept out of all that were presented to him.
18:12 I'd disagree. For emotional pre-time skip Eren it'd make sense maybe, but post timeskip Eren it's not fitting compared to how he behaved the entire time. Also it was so weird seeing the alliance treat Eren like some sort of martyr afterwards, like he didn't just commit the biggest atrocity in human history. No way their attitude towards him didn't drastically change.

I interpreted that as he's useing the last of the founders power he has left to transform into a colossal to try and reattach to the worm.

calling himself an idiot is just his self-loathing. That he couldn't accept the other outcomes and chose to commit genocide even though he tried to change the path in which he committed genocide but his nature just wanted the world of Armin's book. He is truly the embodiment of "Attack on Titan". He was just an average person that's the whole point of Eren's character.
One thing I really liked which you pointed out is that Eren as a character had a lot of character development but his core ideology never changed. People say he never changed (which is only partially true). His core ideology always comes out in his kid form, and all the self-hatred, care, and understanding come from his adult form. In this way, he is the same as REINER( Warrior and Soldier), with two personalities Kid and Adult Eren.
One thing AOT also embodies is "PARADOX". Like Eren causing his Mom's death and manipulating his father into killing Reiss's family.
Aot uses many paradoxes like "Bootstrap paradox", "Zhuang Zhou paradox".
Eren is such a complex multi-layered character. He is definitely my favorite character.

What you said about the theme shift hit me hard and i think it reflects reality. With an ignorant view on x or y, one had a black or white view, and as the truth is revealed, it becomes grey. Which ironically the opposite of what you'd expect. You'd assume when you don't know, things are grey snd as you learn, things become black and white. If you want to understand the universe, embrace paradox. There are things that are diametrically opposed and both true. One paradox of this world is, the more you know, the murkier things become.

On a philosophical level I feel it's fundamentally contradictory to claim there's hope for freedom in a world with complete determinism. It's the most pessimistic approach and even claiming it includes people's own will in it is still depriving them of all autonomy and free will.

which endings you guys like? Anime or manga? I think both are good at their point of views. The manga, had more point of view of the characters rather than the story itself. The anime, had more emotions and humanized the events which people say: "the anime has saved AOT"

I (mostly) like your takes on animation, but ngl this was surprisingly a very well-made video. You actually understood the ending way better than those smelly titanfolk/redditor lunatics. Ending is definitely flawed but it is not even close to being as bad as those delusional basement dwellers say it is.

Well since I'm a super AOT fan I watched it again the next night to see if history repeats itself and it did! I was dived into. I'm not sure I buy into the idea that Eren didn't know he would be stopped in the end.
He said he kept moving forward in order to reach an outcome where Mikasa does something (he doesn't know that she would kill him) that would result in eradication of titans from the world and if titans were gone, rumbling would also be stopped.
He also said he pushed them away (before he had the powers of the founder) so that they would stop him and become heroes and I don't think that goal was a bluff or a cover up for his true desires.

Now that I think about, this would've been a Flashback like how Eren Talked with Armin. But Eren trying to wipe out her Memory and Mikasa's constant Fatigue caused her to Lose Control but she was able to Recollect her Memory (cuz she was Ackerman) after Thinking about Eren's Last Words, that's why we see those frames of headache. The Conversation between Mikasa and Eren would've been true memories.

I think the people who hated the ending(most of them were hardcore fans as far as I know), it's because the ending is very generic in a way. Tons of plot armor for everyone, talk no jutsu, kinda happy ending for AoT standards, same themes as many major shounen, etc. These fans thought AoT as something better and when we got this type of ending, they were pissed. Atleast that's my theory as to why many fans hated the ending. Execution could have been better too.

Don't know why but I always thought you would chastise the ending or you were an AOE/ANR bro but nevertheless I respect your interpretation and the love for ending.
But I do have a lot of problems like who is controlling EREN? who is giving him the calls and memories - his future self? Then he isn't a slave to freedom he is a slave to the plotpoint.
Also imo his" I am idiot and I don't want that "makes no sense at all the character that has been built up is washed up in an instant with his breakdown for just some pussy? I felt AOT was never about romanticism as much - probably why I felt the show was a bit bold it doesn't need those cringy ass ships to maintain the talks within the fandom. Coming back to it I don't think a person who can learn a broken ODM gear, become the most valuable asset of his military, kill Titans , single-handedly infiltrated and brought a Nation to dust and made his friends to do so, betrayed his brother in the paths is an idiot - it is somewhat of a lazy writing. Is he an extremist and always opts for violence as a solution? Yes but bro knows what he is doing he cannot be simply compartmentalized into a fkin idiot.
Also Ymir couldn't relate to Historia breaking through the chains of royal blood? She couldn't relate to Ymir from season 2? She couldn't relate to Eren when he betrayed zeke and fought for his freedom? Oh yess Mikasa was the most relatable one right? And I don't see a parallel between King fritz and Eren as an exploiter towards Ymir and Mikasa. Eren definitely wasn't controlling Mikasa or exploiting her like Fritz did.
So this are my complaints, I still love the show to death and respect Isayama for such a brilliance in writing but the ending not so much. But I think people had high expectations from Isayama as why wouldn't they the writing has been bold as you said and very close to realism, I mean the show went from Humans vs Titans to Humans vs Humans to Nations vs Nationa to A fkin political drama to a time travel ( a very unique take on time travel that I still haven't seen anywhere) to a mass genoicide - so people definitely expected something special with negligible plotholes.

Reasons to why it’s a terrible ending.
1 How did his friends survive the titans? They lose Sasha to 3 titan shifters and 2 kids but lose no one against 100s of titan shifters?
    2. Zeke dying shouldn’t of stopped the rumbling. Ymir’s goal was to destroy the world so why didn’t Ymir just continue the rumbling after zeke died?’
    3. Zeke should of stopped the rumbling earlier because his dad telling him “ please stop Eren” didn’t give him motivation to die so he can stop it but armin showing a ball did?
    4. How did mikasa free Ymir?😂 and no it isn’t because she was able to kill her lover and move on no no no she didn’t move on for crap she still had that scarf on and got buried next to Eren.
5.Ymir doesn't have Stockholm’s syndrome, if she did why did she not heal herself when a spear went through her? If she had Stockholm’s syndrome she would of had the will to live for the king. Ymir’s character is terrible. She is in the paths because she is a slave to Fritz but disobeyed him ?
    6 Eren ch139 (last 30 mins)
    “ I’m an idiot”
    “I don’t know why I did the
    rumbling”
“ I moved forward for mikasas choice”
“ I did it to portray u as heroes” 💀💀💀💀
“ I would of killed them all if u didn’t stop me”
    Pre ch139
“Ill keep moving forward until I destroy my enemies “
“The only way to end the cycle of hatred is to bury it”😂
7.Ain’t no soul answering this question. If Ymir can see the future then why did Ymir wait till mikasa kills Eren who somehow frees her when she can see the future and knows that mikasa will kill Eren? Why did she wait for it to happen when she knows what the result is? She should of been free since she entered paths
    8. What was the point of destroying 80%? eldia got destroyed. What did he achieve by doing that? He made the outer world hate eldians more and doomed paradises safety which he promised ( Eren only cared about Eldias safety not cycle of hatred so eldia bombing themselves is irrelevant for him)
    9. What was the reason for the rumbling ?
It defo wasn’t to make them look like hero’s because Eren said if u didn’t stop me I would of killed them all which is a contradiction.
    10. Erens mom death was pointless. He already said he killed her because it wasn’t bertholdt time yet which means it wasn’t to fuel his hate for titans💀He already had the determination to lead him were he already is. When mikasa’s parents got killed he said “ if anyone tried to take away my freedom I won’t hesitate to take theirs” he also said to his dad that the kidnappers were scum and animals that needed to die. Eren before his moms death wanted to join the survey corps and venture outside the walls. If he found out the world wants to kill him he would of started the rumbling because they tried to take his freedom and we knew what Eren thinks about that. Erens view of freedom was killing everyone outside the walls so he 100% has the determination to do the rumbling. (Anyone who says Eren view of freedom wasn’t killing everyone u need to rewatch the last episode where he was talking to ramzi the kid
    11. In ch130 ( episode where the ships get destroyed in Marley) Eren thinks about his mom getting eaten by the titan and it being his main motivation for the rumbling which makes no sense since Eren should know that he killed his mom because this is when he sent armin to paths and told him everything.
12.The whole Eren at the cabin scene. How did eren interact with mikasas memories? She is an Ackerman he Shouldn't be able to do that. people who are saying this is a different timeline pls provide ur proof. When armin walks up to Eren decapitated head mikasa says to armin “armin u remember NOW TOO don’t you” this shows her memory was wiped since she said NOW
    13. Eren crying like a baby for mikasa is a retcon. When did Eren ever cry like this for mikasa? He alway pushed mikasa away from him. When Eren found out he has a 8 years to live mikasa was in jail with him, did he care about her then? No he didn’t even care about mikasa when he found out he dosnt have long left to live even isayama said mikasa is a mother figure for him so how exactly does him crying like a baby fit his character?
    14. Eren said to armin he will show them the memories after he gets killed but shows it to mikasa before he gets killed?
    15. How did Eren turn into the collosal titan after zeke died and the worm left him ?😂😂😂
    16. There was literally no point in the rumbling, the outside worlds wants to kill then because their just eldian. What makes Eren think destroying 80% of the world then letting armin kill you to look like a hero does? Stop them from hating eldians? No😂 they will hate u more💀
    17. Eren didn’t take away his friends titans powers cause he wanted them to have freedom but took away their memories when he was speaking to them in paths ??
    18. When armin got deepthroated by a titan and he went to paths how did time carry on moving? It’s already a well established fact that time don’t move in paths.
I DONT WANT TO HEAR ANY HEAD CANNONS. I WANT YOU TO SHOW PROOF
