My favorite thing about Larry is he always speaks in terms of us and the team including him. He will be the frist to tell you he's wasn't good enough when things went wrong. He takes accountability and can look at himself honestly. Probably why he was so respected by players and other coaches alike.

    • @etuboldon

Don't get suckered by this interview. He's so reviled by a lot of players, maybe not openly but ask the 2004 Olympic team. Even David Stern was forced to criticize him for blaming his teams for his losses. The 2005 Knicks debacle was 95% his fault because he was still holding a grudge against Marbury for the 2004 Olympics debacle. Jalen Rose has an anecdote about how Larry Brown tried to get him out of the league for such trivial reasons. Larry Brown has a veneer of "niceness' but he's rotten to the core.

Bottom line is Larry Brown should have never forced his way out of Detroit. He did some great work with the Clippers, Pacers, Sixers, and Pistons but he damaged his legacy the way he handled his departure in Detroit. Won a championship with the Pistons and had a great situation then forced the Pistons to fire him because he wanted the Knicks job and found out the grass isn't greener on the other side. Brown has nobody to blame but himself.

In real basketball, chemistry means a whole hell of a lot, oh and this thing called defense! Yeah if you were going to play for Larry Brown's Pistons you kind of have to play defense, something Carmelo Anthony refuses to do. So I'm not sure how that would have worked out. I've always hated Carmelo. Guys Soo overrated.

This just confirms the idea in life you can't just be excellent at your craft (here, coaching), you must also make sure you get the conditions right for your work to be optimal. In this case, you need to be pals with ownership, GMs etc. even if they're unlikable.

He is not afraid to discipline any player that doesn't play to his standards but he had his faults as a coach as well. Role boundaries issues. Gms should not coach they should trust the coaching vision as to how to assemble the " complimentary talents" the coach desires and go out and get them. Make the trades, do the talent evaluation with the coaches input , take the best available draft choice who fits that complimentary scheme. Larry went on to win in Detroit. HE has won everywhere except in NY. Part of that cities franchise problem is the media fishbowl that dissects every game every hiccup as if it's the day after Armageddon. People on the street draw the wrong conclusions sometimes from the media portrayal gms, players , coaches are expected to have to performed to the highest level yesterday . The expectations are so high especially when some salaries are unjustifiable. I think the media circus 🎪 contributed to the early trigger on Larry Thomas and Dolan feeling the heat. Patience is not a Virtue in nyc . You've heard of the ny minute ? It's more like 10 seconds.

It's a fair point. But it's kinda like the D-wade, Jimmy Butler, and Rondo roster of the Bulls. Yes...those are GREAT players. But....how do they fit together?? I have a ball dominant "point guard" and 3 solid 3 and D guys (Ariza, Barnes, and Frye). I have a broken down Penny Hardaway 12 years into the league who will probably want the ball in his hands. I don't have a center or power forward that I can rely on to get me a bucket like a post player should be able to do...I have a couple of "enforcers." And then I have Jalen Rose and Nate Robinson. Build that team on NBA2k and tell me how you make that team win games?? You have one guy that can get you 15ppg and the other guys you bought b/c their names are big and recognizable. Not trying to be aggressive....your point is valid. I just very, very angry when I see front office guys who "shop while they're hungry" and give the coach all "main dishes." Clearly, Larry B was a failure with NYK but it wasn't totally his fault. Isiah Thomas was also a major part of the problem since he was the one who built that dysfunctional roster (something a HC never has control over).

One of the biggest mistakes in Knicks history. Larry won everywhere we went. But we did have players on that team and Larry should’ve worked better with them. Isaiah was mostly only good at drafting

Great insight on the limitations of a organization if the department's are not on the same page. In hindsight, under Isiah, the Knicks were run into the ground and overrun with a sex scandal. Isiah killed a chance to let Brown upgrade and work his ledgendary turn around magic for success. To this day, the stifling actions of this period curtailed the momentum which hurts the team until this day. Knick fans hate Isiah for bringing unnecessary scandal and non winning to NYC. Now, the coach(former successful Sun) was fired for not succeeding with a tanking mode team. Players and coaches have stayed away from N.Y. to play. Hopefully, this will change to get a team the tri state and nation will be proud of in the future. These days, a good gm can go to local ny playgrounds and gyms to make up a better team than currently exist.

Isiah Thomas has a great eye for young talent. He did a good job in Toronto and Indiana but he did a real shitty job with the Knicks... I disagree with Larry Brown. He would not have won with that terrible ass roster

E Boogie IMO Isiah ruined Indiana... he had more talent available than Bird, but instead of taking the Pacers back to the Finals... they never made it out of the first round.

he mentions that he wanted to make changes which they did down the road. he implied that if he stayed long enough and they listened and trusted him to make the changes that they wouldve been a better team.

All he tried to do in New York was go over isaiah's head and try to take his job with Dolan. Brown is full of shit.
Had he been a black coach he would of exiled from the NBA years ago. Would have never had the same chances.
He came to NY to look for office power thats it.
I don't see anyone building statues for him. Like they did for Marbury.
He was an awful coach who couldn't win with one of the most dominent players i've ever seen in Iverson.
This parasite vilified all the talent that was ever around him.
Got lucky to inherit that good Piston team.

Who is the one coach who led the Clippers to two straight playoff appearances in the 90s of all era. Who is the person who delivered sixers 5 best years. Who set the current culture of the spurs and pacers. Had larry had enough time (like pop said in the settlement court hearing in 2007) he would have turned them around.

Marc Regal Zeke was overly scrutinized in NY. For an Anucha incident, in which he was found not guilty.
Ass hole Mike Lupica and other shit writer wrote alot of garbage on Zeke. Even went after his family.
The only player to beat Jordan, Magic and Bird.
He had a great Eye for talent T-Mac, Nate Robinson. David Lee & Channing Frye have rings, who were discovered by Isaiah.
Stephon Marbury had a country build him a statue. Young Trevor Ariza who Larry almost broke his confidence , became a champion elsewhere.
smooth talker Larry Brown holds the record for the most changed starters in one season. That's the record he broke as a knick.
I do the homework and do not falter to media garbage especially when it's unwarranted.
As a "Black Man" you should take pride in Isaiah Thomas's accomplishments. A true GREAT.
It truly saddens me that you don't see it this way.
Think about it Joe Dumars is still in office and Larry doesn't have an NBA job insight. Who's really wrong here???
